How to use the Command Prompt to Reveal Hidden Files

Can't see those files on your drive? Some viruses leave behind nasty side effects, even when your antivirus program has cleaned the actual virus from your computer. If your desktop icons are missing and your C: drive appears blank, don’t panic — your files haven’t gone permanently. Common viruses, such as the Windows 7 Recovery virus, will hide your files in an attempt to coerce you into paying for the virus’s removal. When you view your desktop or click on your C: drive, it may appear that all of your files have been deleted, but they haven’t — the virus has simply hidden them. You can restore them easily using a simple command prompt trick that works in Windows XP, Vista and 7. I've even used this trick in Windows 8 and it worked perfectly.

Click the Start button in the lower left corner of your task bar. Type cmd in the search box at the bottom of the menu and press Enter. If you’re using Windows XP, click Run and type cmd into the Run box.

You will see this screen:

Type attrib -s -h -r c:/*.* /s /d and press Enter to execute the command. The command prompt window should look like this after you’ve typed the command:

Allow the command to finish executing (it may take a few minutes). When it’s done, close the command prompt window and check your desktop — your files, hidden by the virus, have been restored. You can use the same trick to restore files the virus may have hidden on other drives, including removable storage such as flash drives and external hard drives; just change the drive letter in the command above to the drive letter of the storage device with the hidden files.

Note that the c:/*.* in the command line refers to the local disk drive C (if your hidden file is located on the drive C). If you are however using a USB or other drive replace indicate the letter of that drive in place of C. For instance if your USB is labelled as F, then you will use f:/*.* in the command line. Let me know if this works for you.

Web apps are coming in Firefox 16

Mozilla took a big step toward the coming conflict between native apps and Web apps as it introduced Web app support to Firefox 16, which moved to the the developer's Aurora channel last Friday.

The Web app support in Firefox 16 Aurora means that when the Mozilla Marketplace opens to the public -- likely to be sometime before the end of 2012 -- people will be able to run Web-based apps through any iteration of Firefox. This is part of Mozilla's "Kilimanjaro" project, syncing up the various Mozilla projects in preparation for the Firefox OS push that's coming next year.

This comes on the heels of the Firefox 15 release to beta, which focused on major improvements to memory management on the desktop version. There's more in Firefox 16 than just Web apps, though. The desktop versions of the browser have turned on VoiceOver support by default for the Mac, and they also have improved the functionality of the built-in PDF reader across all platforms.

For Web developers, Aurora on desktops comes with Opus codec support turned on by default, per tab reporting in about:memory, and a new developer toolbar. Available through the Developer menu or Shift+F2, it offers quick links to developer tools, an error count for the Web Console, and a command line for faster keyboard access.

Firefox 16 Aurora for Android also comes with Web app support, and offers some new features that many competitors already offer. Reader Mode is new in this version, along with a Read Now book icon in the location bar. When you tap the Read Now icon, it'll add the site you're looking at to a "read it later" option called Reading List.

It's also got a new "tab send" feature that emulates the Chrome-to-Phone and Fox-to-Phone add-ons. When you choose Firefox Sync from the Share list, you can send the tab to any of your other computers or devices connected via Firefox Sync. Finally, search suggestions now appear when typing text into the location bar, along with recommendations from your history.

All four cross-platform versions of Firefox now support numerous unprefixed CSS3 features. This means that the Mozilla-specific prefixes for certain CSS3 code, the ones that begin "-moz-border-radius," for example, have been simplified to "-border-radius." A lot of this is about how the next versions of HTML and CSS are made, and what it really means is that the next-generation versions of those coding languages, HTML5 and CSS3, are maturing to a point where they are supported by a wider number of browser makers.

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a surprisingly effective freeware antimalware tool. It's a relatively speedy malware remover, with the quick scan taking about 8 minutes even with other high-resource programs running. The heuristics engine proved on multiple computers during empirical testing that it was capable of determining the difference between false positives and dangerous apps.

The app has some nice features rolled in, too. It supports multiple drive scanning including networked drives, context menu options including a scan-on-demand for individual files, and the FileAssassin option under the More Tools section for removing locked files. The interface is simple, but pleasant-looking and well-organized. Tabs live just below the oversized logo, with few options per tab to keep down the clutter. The installation process was fast enough, but interestingly offered up the well-kept changelog and an instant definition file update.
Do note that the real-time protection is restricted to the paid version, as is the scheduler for updates and scans. Overall, though, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is a responsive malware remover that does what it should with a minimum of fuss.

Climate Mission 3D for Nokia Lumia Windows Phones

Nokia has finally released an "exclusive" video game for their Lumia line of Windows Phones. But no, it's not Angry Birds: Space or anything from EA, it's a little indie title that they had on Symbian awhile back called Climate Mission 3D.
Sounds like a bad 80's movie to us. That or an episode of Captain Planet.
Regardless of Cartman-like reaction it's not half bad. The 3D graphics are well done and the music is chill enough without being annoying. You basically have three mini games--Iceberg, Ants and Trees--which keep you occupied with little tasks like making bigger icebergs, forcing slave ants to do you bidding by collecting pine needles or populating the earth with fruit launching trees.

Although we jest at the theme of the game, considering it's free it' s not a terrible time killer. While the initial levels are dead simple (to train you) it does get a little challenging. There are also things to unlock and do around the globe and we guess the message ain't too bad albeit tacky.
But hey, free is free so if you're on a Nokia Lumia phone go and grab Climate Mission 3D now in the Nokia Collection.

Firefox 12 ushers in automatic updates

With the latest version of Firefox out, User Account Control pop-ups will become less frequent on Windows, and tools for Web developers get some long-overdue TLC.
Mozilla has updated Firefox to version 12 on tuesday, completing a cycle of changes to how the program updates and bringing some serious elbow-grease to its developer tools.

You still have to approve the User Account Control (UAC) the first time you install Firefox, but for all subsequent versions, it will automatically update without your approval. This is the same update procedure that Google Chrome has been using on Windows for more than a year with few if any known negative consequences.

Besides cutting down on your interaction with the update process, one potential benefit of automatic updates is that if Mozilla must release a security patch, the browser's security will not be dependent on your interaction.

This follows changes made in January's Firefox release, which marked about 80 percent of add-ons as compatible by default. Doing so prevented most add-ons from slowing down the browser update process, and it also more closely emulates the mobile app update process.

Developer tools have received a lot of attention in Firefox 12. Following the new ones such as Tilt in the last release, Firefox 12 has made more than 85 improvements to its dev tools. These include fixes and improvements made to the Style Inspector, Web Console, Page Inspector, HTML View, Page Inspector 3D View, Style Editor, and Scratchpad. HTML5 media player controls have also gotten a visual refresh.
