Google commemorates Shakuntala Devi: The Human Computer

Google has been delivering information to the world since 1998. And from time to time Google has been reintroducing the world with pioneers, famous artists and scientists through its Doodles.

Today, Google is commemorating Shakuntala Devi also known as the “Human Computer” with a calculator styled doodle. The doodle has the initials of Shakuntala Devi and a picture of her with the word Google. You can take a look at the Doodle by visiting the Google India webpage.

Shakuntala Devi was best known for her mathematical abilities and hence aptly called the “Human Computer”. She was born in Bangalore on November 1929 and her talents were soon discovered by her father. He was teaching her a card trick when he first noticed her abilities to memorize large numbers; she was only three years old at that time. After that day she demonstrated her abilities at different places. First, the University of Mysore and then she also did a tour of Europe.

Devi was also the subject of a study by Arthur Jensen, a psychology professor at the University of California, Berkeley. During his study, Arthur gave her a problem that required her to calculate the cube root of 61,629,875 and the seventh root of 170,859,375; Devi was able to answer it even before Arthur could note it down in his notebook.

Devi even competed with a computer once; the challenge was to find the cube root of 188132517 in least time and Devi calculated it before the computer. Another incidence that got her a place in the Guinness Book of Records was when she correctly gave the product of two 13-digit numbers 2,465,099,745,779 and 7,686,369,774,870.

Apart from being a mathematics wizard, Devi was also an astrologer and author of several books. Some of the titles are ‘Puzzles to Puzzles’, ‘Super Memory: It Can Be Yours’, ‘Astrology for You’ and many more. She also published the first study of Homosexuality in India.

Google Doodle commemorating Rembrandt's 407th Birth Anivversary

Google has a very good habit of remembering great people with its Doodles. On the 407th birth anniversary of Rembrandt van Rijn ( listen), Google released a doodle commemorating the great painter and printmaker.

The doodle shows his self portrait which was made by Rembrandt in 1659. It is an oil on canvas painting and has been preserved in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC since 1937, where it's part of Andrew W. Mellon collection.

Rembrandt van Rijn was a Dutch painter and an etcher and was born on 15 July, 1606.He was the ninth child born to Harmen Gerritszoon van Rijn and Neeltgen Willemsdochter van Zuytbrouck.

He was apprentice to some of the greatest painters of his time such as Pieter Lastman, Jacob Pynas and Jacob van Swanenburgh. During the starting of his career he painted portraits which included many self-portraits. In 1631, Rembrandt successfully established himself as a professional portraitist in Amsterdam.

How to download videos from Adobe.tv

Steps:

Download URL Snooper from the above link.
Install it(or you can use the portable version) along with winpcap that comes along with it.
Open URLSnooper and go to General options. Then select your network adapter under "Network Sniffing Options".

4.Click sniff network and in the protocol select Multimedia URLs.

5. Then open your browser and go to the http://tv.adobe.com/.. video page (and let the video start to play).
6. Now you will see some links appear in the sniffer (URLSnooper).

7. The http://content.tv links are your video links.(eg: http://content.tv.adobe.com/adobetv2/videos/2012-05-01/c53737d2ea561c992a096cc8569a96e4.mp4 )

Note: The videos are mostly hosted on edgeboss.net servers.

10. Copy one of the URL(the ones starting with http://content.tv) and go to that URL and voila, you can download the video now by right click->save as .

Note: All the http://content.tv links are video links, they just differ in resolution. The bottom most link has the highest resolution.

Windows 8.1 Preview is out

Microsoft released a public preview of Windows 8.1( download link below ) yesterday at the company's annual BUILD event. It was unveiled by Steve Ballmer and the corporate vice-president of Windows Julie Larson-Green said "With Windows 8 we built a new Windows, reimagined from the chipset to the experience. It was an ambitious vision, and with Windows 8.1 we refine it".

The update will be made available free of charge for Windows 8 and Windows RT. There is a catch, however: all those tech savvy, windows lovers installing the public preview will not be able to upgrade to the final release without reinstalling all of their applications. Those who choose to not participate in the preview, meanwhile, will be able to seamlessly upgrade to Windows 8.1 without having to reinstall anything.

Here is a list of improvements you can look forward to :

1. The Return of Start button

The start button has been introduced in this new build of windows(which you can't disable). Clicking on it won't give you the old-school fly out menu but the modern start screen only.

2. Boot-to-desktop mode

If you really want to relive the old days of Windows then enable the boot-to-desktop mode, by right-clicking on the Taskbar, and then clicking "Properties." Also, another feature which you can enable from the same same menu is that you can opt to have the same wallpaper for both the desktop and Start Screen.

3. More personalized lock Screen

With Windows 8.1, you have the option of running a slideshow on your lock screen, with photos coming from various places, like your PC and SkyDrive . You can also accept Skype video and voice calls from the lock screen, similar to the way you can answer your phone without punching in a pin first.

4. Snap more apps

With windows 8.1 you can now snap more apps depending upon your computer's screen resolution. Before you could only use two apps in the snap app mode in which one app took 70% of the screen and other 30%.But now this restriction has been removed and the apps can take upto 50% of the screen each.

5. Skydrive Integration

SkyDrive is now the default location for saving documents. So you always have your files wherever you go, even when you're offline. And with the included SkyDrive app, you can manage both local files and SkyDrive files in one place.

6. Internet Explorer 11

Internet Explorer 11 largely looks the same as its IE10 counterpart. The tab interface has been moved to the bottom, and Microsoft is catching up to the competition with tab sync across Windows 8.1 devices and Windows Phone. WebGL is also supported in Internet Explorer 11, and website owners can create separate Live Tiles that can be pinned to the Start Screen to access RSS feeds.

7. Better photography

Microsoft has some pretty intriguing user experiences for snapping shots and editing photos in Windows 8.1. With Photosynth, part of the Camera app, you can take a whole 360 degree photosphere — an entire room floor to ceiling — just by moving the tablet around, as if each image is filling in the pieces of a virtual jigsaw puzzle. The Photosynth software stitches them all together, and the results are surprisingly good. Meanwhile, the Photos app lets you enhance or mute colors through a different circular procedure: you drop a pin on any spot, then rotate a radial dial to adjust the intensity.

Google Fiber: 100 times faster than today’s average broadband

Google, on 26th of this month rolled out its newest project named GOOGLE FIBER. Google Fiber is a project to build an experimental broadband internet network infrastructure using fiber-optic communication in Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri . In simple language it's a project that will provide seamless data connectivity and speeds up-to 1 gigabytes per second (both download and upload both). Over 1,100 communities applied to be the first recipient of the technology.

Google is charging every home that gets the fiber service $300 for the construction of the fiber link. But the company is waiving that fee for people who sign up initially for the service.

Google is offering three different packages. The Gigabit and Fiber TV service will cost $120 a month and will include 1Gbps connectivity on the upstream as well as downstream. There is no data cap. It also comes with 1 terabyte of Google Drive cloud storage. The TV service will include all the regular broadcast TV channels, hundreds of Google Fiber TV channels, thousands of TV shows on demand, and premium movie channels.

Google didn't say whether traditional cable channels such as Discovery or ESPN will be included in the package. The company will also be giving away free Google Android Nexus 7 tablets to everyone who signs up for this service.

The second package is for broadband-only customers. It will cost $70 a month and offer 1Gbps downloads and uploads. It will also provide the 1 terabyte of data storage, as well as a network box for offering the service.The last package is geared toward the 25 percent of Kansas City area people who may not have broadband already. Google will offer this service for a limited time only. It will be free to customers who pay for the $300 fiber installation. And it will include 5Mbps download speeds and 1Mpbs upload speeds for seven years. Customers will have the option to upgrade the service to one of the other packages. Google will allow customers for this plan to pay for the $300 construction fee on a monthly basis -- $25 a month for the first year.
