Garmin Nuvi 3790T

2011-10-22T12:29:00.000-07:00

Garmin designed the Nuvi 3790T to be the thinnest, lightest portable navigation device ever and to go toe-to-toe with the iPhone in a fashion show. Though we're not certain that the Nuvi would win such a matchup, by setting its standards so high Garmin has essentially solidified the 3790T's spot as the sexiest dedicated GPS device you can buy.

The Garmin Nuvi 3790T is one of the thinnest and lightest portable navigators we've tested; it's the best looking, too. Voice Command is truly hands-free and can be activated merely by speaking to the Nuvi. Bluetooth calling also helps drivers keep their hands on the wheel. Traffic data is free.

(Design)

Garmin started by making things thin. At 4.8 inches wide and 2.9 inches tall, it doesn't look much smaller than your average PND...

The 3790T is only 4 ounces; the light weight and the slim profile make this Nuvi very pocketable. However, to our hands it feels a smidge too light, coming off as delicate and a bit fragile. We'd prefer more heft and solidity.

Like most GPS devices, the majority of the user's interactions with the Nuvi 3790T take place at the touch screen. This unit is built around a 4.3-inch TFT display with a resolution of 800x480 pixels. Touch sensitivity is capacitive rather than the normal resistive screen. As a result, the screen requires considerably less pressure to register a touch than previous Nuvis, making typing with the onscreen keyboard a much easier affair..

The Nuvi 3790T ships with a suction cup car dock, a 12-volt Micro-USB power cable, a Mini-USB sync cable, an adhesive dashboard mounting puck, and user guides in English and French...

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

2011-10-19T06:40:00.000-07:00

It's been a wild day in Android land. Earlier this morning, Motorola and Verizon pulled back the curtain on the sleek, gorgeous, and positively anorexic Motorola Droid Razr, only to have the spotlight stolen by the double-whammy of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Google's Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich OS.

Now, Samsung spent most of the day tripping over its own leaks with regards to the looks and specs of the phone, but that didn't dampen our admiration any. It's a phone that any carrier would be proud to offer, from the HD screen and 1.2GHz dual-core processor to the 1080p HD video capture and playback, to the barometer and NFC chip embedded within.

The phone is bound for the U.S. and parts of Asia and Europe, starting in November.

(SCREEN)

It starts with a huge 4.65-inch Super AMOLED HD display (1280 x 720 pixel resolution.) Samsung makes some of the best screens on the market, with colors that pop, and a way of reproducing light that uses no power on black. That's better for battery life and also tends to improve contrast.

Although there is HD resolution, the screen size verges on the enormous, so there's a chance that pixel density may not be the absolute highest around, nor the absolute sharpest or clearest, but do expect some impressive screen quality.

(CAMERA)

Now, it's true that the number of megapixels can only take you so far, and the camera's light sensor and software processing also plays a hand. However, Samsung already has phones with great 8-megapixel cameras on the market--the entire Galaxy S II lineup--so this 5-megapixel camera feels like a backtrack. Still, Android 4.0's new camera software could make up for it, and could even surpass the 8-megapixel camera in image quality and photographic satisfaction, but this is a deep hands-on test for another day. Samsung also boasts that there's no shutter lag.

• Text and handwritten note-taking capabilities (stylus included)

• Up to 5 weeks of reading on a single battery charge (with wireless disabled)

• 12 embedded multilingual dictionaries (2 English language and 10 translation

(REVIEW)

The Sony Reader Wi-Fi PRS-T1 is a compact and lightweight touch-screen e-book reader.

It offers access to large catalog of e-books, magazines, and newspapers via Sony's online store, plus online loaners from your local library, has support for EPUB files, and is compatible with any e-book store that uses the Adobe DRM format. This Sony also offers audio capabilities, a microSD card expansion slot, and its battery lasts for up to five weeks on a single charge with Wi-Fi off.

A year later, Sony has now updated its Reader line, and this time the company is more in tune with current e-reader features.

. Instead of three Reader models with various pricing and feature sets, Sony now has one $149 model, the Sony Reader Wi-Fi PRS-T1. It does, however, come in three colors (black, red, or white). The Reader Wi-Fi retains the responsive touch screen of its predecessors and (as the name suggests) adds Wi-Fi.

In all, it's a very solid e-reader. The only problem is it doesn't do much to distinguish itself from the competition: Barnes & Noble and Amazon offer cheaper models with similar or identical feature sets, and content offerings of their respective stores are more extensive.

(Design and features)

While the Reader Wi-Fi is essentially a redesigned version of last year's PRS-650, the new model has an all-new chassis and weighs less (partially due to an all-plastic, rather than metal, casing).

Overall, the Reader Wi-Fi has an elegant, classy look, and we liked the design. Our only real complaint was that glossy finish on the border around the touch screen (think of the finish on the original PS3) shows fingerprints.

With Wi-Fi now aboard and the inclusion of a microSD card slot for expanding beyond the built-in 2GB of memory, the Reader Wi-Fi is on par with its competitors from a specs perspective..

'iPad Mini' to take on Kindle Fire?

2011-10-14T06:38:00.000-07:00

An industry source who speaks with the Asia-based tablet supply chain told Techerainn that chatter is picking up..

for a 7-inch Apple tablet. Maybe not coincidentally, that's the same size of Amazon's $199 tablet that's will

ship on November 15.

"Apple has done extensive user testing and we really understand this stuff...There are clear limits on how

close you can place things on a touch screen, which is why we think 10 inch is the minimum screen size to

create great tablet apps," Jobs said at the time.

And the tablet market is changing. Apple may have to change along with it. Smaller 7-inch and 8.9-inch

tablets from Samsung, HTC, RIM and others are prevalent now. And if the Kindle Fire approaches the iPad

in sales--which analysts say is possible--that would make smaller, cheaper tablets a category that rivals the

10-inch iPad in popularity..

Jobs' protests notwithstanding, at the time more than a few analysts said Apple was close to bringing out a
product....

Xbox 360 Wireless Speed Wheel bridges gap between casual, hard-core

2011-10-10T03:44:00.000-07:00

Microsoft's Wireless Speed Wheel to test with the game. As a car guy and a bit of a racing sim snob..

The wireless wheel isn't so much shaped like a wheel as it is a stylized flight yoke from an airplane..

On one of the device's stalks you'll find a directional pad and the left trigger and on its other stalk the Y/X/B/A buttons and the right trigger..

Most racing games map brakes and gas to the left and right triggers, respectively, so it's good to place these quite literally at the user's fingertips..

The Speed Wheel features an internal accelerometer that allows users to steer their digital car by holding the wheel in front of them and twisting from left to right...

I also have a few issues with the way that one uses the Speed Wheel. It is difficult to sit on a couch sawing away with this loose bit of plastic and not feel a bit like an idiot...

There's also no place to plug in the standard wired headset that ships with the Xbox 360, so you'll need a second controller connected or a wireless headset (at an additional cost) if you want to be able to chat with your buddies during your next virtual track day...

If that sort of casual racing sim fanatic sounds like you, the Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Speed Wheel merits checking out when it hits shelves on October 31 at an MSRP of about $60...
