The Motorola Droid X is the fourth droid branded phone for Verizon Wireless and Motorola’s eleventh Google android based smartphone.  The 4.3” display along with the surface area makes the Droid X the largest phone available in the US today.  The included battery delivers more than eight hours of talk time with the ability to purchase an even larger extended battery will be available as an add-on accessory.  The touch screen display allows the keyboard to be improved by the new Swype text entry; this allows the user write words quickly without picking up your finger.   The Droid X comes equipped with three microphones; two are used for noise cancellation so even in extremely loud areas the capability to hear the person on the other end, and them hear you, isn’t an issue.  The speakerphone works quite well, its loud enough to use outdoors with clear communications.

The Droid X offers a single interface to sign into various different accounts at the same time such as, Google, Yahoo Mail, Microsoft Exchange, Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, and photo sharing services among others. Google and Microsoft Exchange calendars can get included, and your address book also mixes in with Facebook, Twitter and your MySpace friends. You can click into a contact card and will then be able to see all of your friend’s updates.  The Droid X has a Blur universal inbox which shows your Face book , MySpace and Twitter as e-mails causing them to mix with your other messages; Blur is not something that you are able to remove from the phone and can sometimes slow down the performance or cause the occasion freeze of the device.

Droid X users will receive Android 2.2 and Adobe Flash Player 10.1 with an update in the later part of the summer.  Once the update is released the Flash Player will allow the users to use to experience applications and content including gamies, ecommerce, music, video, audio, animations etc.  The phone can rent and buy movies from Blockbuster that play on the phone’s screen and also offer a updated NFL app which will allow the streaming of live games to the phone.  Google CEO, Eric Schmidt said “The Droid X expands our commitment to mobile video.”  The HDMI output allows for the connection and play back media in HD to your TV as well.

The pre-sale on the Droid X begins June 25 and the smartphone will be sold in stores beginning July 15 for $199.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement.  In addition, current Verizon Wireless customers who have contracts ending by the end of 2010 can upgrade to the Droid X without any penalty.

To call the iPad “controversial” would be quite an understatement. Apple’s new device, a strange cross between an iPod Touch and a laptop that at first glance seems to defeat the purpose of both, has been embraced by Apple fans and ridiculed by seemingly everyone else since the moment it was unveiled. Everyone from Jon Stewart to Collegehumor.com has taken shots at the iPad, joining the newest wave of online Apple-bashing. But it’s obvious that many critics have never bothered to actually study the object of their derision, and beneath all the cynical jokes is a surprisingly capable gadget that may not be the “revolution” Apple promised, but still has the potential to change the face of the electronics market.

The iPad’s stated purpose is to serve as a sort of bridge between iPod-sized devices and full-size laptops, and it accomplishes this very well. The iPad is 9.56” long, 7.47” wide and 0.5” thick, weighing a solid 1.5 pounds. Critics have called it “unwieldy” and complained that it’s too large to fit into a pocket like the iPhone, but that was never its intent. It’s just the right size to be carried around comfortably in a bag or backpack without being so small that reading and typing become chores. It’s hard to imagine a better device for travelers. With physical buttons limited to home, power, volume and screen position lock (to keep it in portrait or landscape mode), the layout is sleek and uncomplicated. This means no HDMI, webcam or memory card slot, but the design is meant to mirror the iPhone as closely as possible to make for easier use.

Crammed inside that thin shell is a custom Apple 1GHz A4 SOC (system on a chip) with a PoverVR SGX GPU. One thing about the iPad that nobody can laugh at is its speed and power. Whether it’s games, photos, or any of the thousands of available apps, the system can handle it with no lag. This, however, does raise the question of why the iPad can only run one app at a time. With more power at its disposal, there seems to be no reason why it was built with the same constraint as the iPhone.

On the subject of apps, twelve come standard. Mail, videos, photos, notes, contacts, calendar, maps, Youtube, Safari, iTunes, iPod and App Store are all there, but some that came with the iPhone, such as stocks and calculator, are not (rumors have circulated that they will be released for free as soon as some glitches have been worked out, so don’t write them off just yet). The Youtube app is particularly nice, and helps to make up for the iPad’s lack of Flash that can get in the way of viewing online videos.

One app that must be mentioned is iBooks, Apple’s answer to Kindle. There is nothing terribly wrong with iBooks and it’s a great feature for travelers who want to relax with a book in airports and waiting rooms, but customers who hold reading as their highest priority should look elsewhere. For many people, particularly those who get eyestrain from computer use, the iPad’s screen is just too bright for comfortable reading over an extended period of time, even with iBooks’ independent brightness control. Perusing a magazine or reference book on the iPad is no problem, and it’s a nice feature to have, but those who want to bury themselves in a novel would be better off with a Kindle or just sticking to good old-fashioned paper.

When you get right down to it, the iPad is an interesting idea that performs well in the role it’s built for. Many of the jokes and insults are aimed more at Steve Jobs’ exaggerated hype (his overuse of the word “magical” in particular) than the device itself. The iPad is a convenient-sized, powerful platform with a wonderfully clear 1024×768 pixel screen, 10 hour battery life, and available apps for every conceivable purpose. It’s not perfect, but the best retort to the mocking laughter is the device itself.
