Rumour: Verizon Nokia Lumia 929 coming in January

The Nokia Lumia 929 has been leaking for about three months now, which is a lot. Yet it’s still not official, and according to the latest rumor on the matter it won’t be for another few weeks.

Furthermore, it might be the first Nokia Windows Phone to drop the numbers after the Lumia brand, and be offered as the Lumia Icon by Verizon. This designation has been leaked by both Windows Phone Central and @evleaks, so it might turn out to be true after all. We’ll have to wait and see though.

If you’re wondering just when you’ll finally be able to buy this device, it’s apparently going to be launched on January 16. The date is still obviously subject to change. If it pans out though, then we assume that the Lumia Icon will be unveiled during CES at the beginning of next month.
The Nokia Lumia Icon (or Lumia 929) is said to come with a 5-inch 1080p Full HD AMOLED touchscreen, a 20 MP PureView camera with oversampling and dual-LED flash, a front camera too, a 2.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of non-expandable storage space, NFC, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, Qi wireless charging, an FM radio, GPS, and a 2,510 mAh battery. It will be out in matte white or matte black.

Acer unveiled Liquid Z5 with a 5-inch display

Acer has unveiled Liquid Z5 - the successor of the very affordable Liquid Z3. The new Z5 model comes with a bigger 5" FWVGA TFT display, though it is powered by the same MediaTek MT6572 platform.

The MT6572 is based on a dual-core 1.3GHz Cortex-A7 processor, Mali-400 graphics and 512MB of RAM. It should be enough to power the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean ticking inside the Liquid Z5.

The rest of the specs include a 5MP rear camera with a LED flash, a VGA front facer, 4GB of expandable storage, and a 2,000mAh battery. The Liquid Z5 also offers dual-SIM support, 3G with HSPA+, Bluetooth 3.0, Wi-Fi N, GPS and an FM radio.

The Acer Liquid Z5 will launch in white and gray flavors and will cost as low as €169. The first markets to get the Z5 are Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Ukraine and the UK.

Nokia Lumia 929 showed up - Wearing Incipio case

A purported Nokia smartphone allegedly being developed for US carrier Verizon has been spotted donning an Incipio case on the makers own site. The device is identified as the Nokia Icon, which has been confirmed as the codename for the upcoming Lumia 929.

It's reported that the Lumia 929 was initially slated for a pre-holiday release, but has suffered a delay and got pushed back to January 16 instead.

Another important caveat surrounding the Icon moniker is that sources indicate that it could be released directly under its nickname, which would be a first for Nokia, that has always outed devices with a name and model number.

Nokia Normandy Android Phone Leaks Again

The Nokia Android phone known as Normandy has been rendered on this site before and it all started with a leak. Now the original source, @evleaks has leaked yet another image of this strange project that may bring Google’s mobile OS to a Nokia device.

Apparently, Nokia is working on this in the background, till the exclusivity agreement with Microsoft expires. This doesn’t look too covert for me, so maybe it’s just a canned prototype. What’s certain is that we’re dealing with a lower end device, that’s lacking a camera flash and that for some reason only uses a capacitive Back button.

There’s no Home button or Menu button and I noticed there’s no physical camera button either. The device seems to offer the polycarbonate shell typical for a lower end Lumia and the design reminds me a lot of the Nokia Lumia 625. I’m guessing there’s a dual core CPU in the mix, 1 GB of RAM or 512 MB and a 5 megapixel camera. Would this device feel appealing for anyone in 2014?!

Coming Up: Nokia Tablet with 8.3″ 1080p display

After the success of Nokia's first Lumia range tablet Lumia 2520, Nokia is coming up with a tablet with 8.3 inch 1080p FHD display. Lumia 2520 with 10.1" struggles to be a winner of tablets, more compact tablet from Finnish giant will surely win the hearts of millions.

According to import documents from India, a device codenamed RX-115 has an 8.3″ FullHD IPS touchscreen, nanoSIM slot and is already undergoing testing.

The report also hints that the tablet will also support pen feature that lacks in Lumia 2520. It will surely be an attack to Samsung Galaxy Tab series.

Oppo to release the first 2K resolution screened phone

The upcoming Oppo Find 7 will have a 5.5-inch with the first ever 2K resolution display on a mobile phone. The resolution of 2560 x 1440px on a screen with a 5.5-inch diagonal adds for the whopping 538 pixels per inch. The image from the Twitter account of +@evleaks states the idea of Oppo Find 7.

Walmart to offer iPhone 5s and 5c with no-contract plans this Friday

US retailer Walmart has been selling Apple's iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c for a while now, but starting this Friday the two smartphones will be available on its own contract-free carriers Straight Talk Wireless and Net10 Wireless.

The prices match those of SIM-free iPhones from the Apple Store. You can get an iPhone 5s 16GB from Walmart (available in store only) for $650 and an iPhone 5c 16GB (available online) for $550. Walmart also offers iPhone 4S 8GB (in store and online) for $450.

After you get an iPhone, you can sign up for a 30-day plan with Straight Talk for $45/month or Net10 for $50/month (additional lines in Net10's Friends and Family service cost $40). If you want unlimited international calls, add $15 a month to either Straight Talk or Net10.

Rumour : Nokia Normandy is reportedly a low-cost Android phone

According to a report in The Verge, the previously leaked, mysterious Nokia Normandy is an Android handset. Known internally under several different codenames, the device is said to be developed as an equivalent to the low-cost Nokia Asha range.

The Nokia Normandy allegedly runs heavily modified Android version – much like in the case of the Amazon Kindle Fire range. The OS will allow the handset to run popular Android apps, thus addressing a major shortcoming of the current Nokia Asha lineup.
The Nokia Normandy development is described as going at “full steam ahead”. The handset is reportedly planned for a release in 2014. However, with Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia's devices & services units all but completed, we are yet to find out what the Redmond giant’s plans for the Normandy are.

WaveMac, A Gesture Control Device Developed By Indian Students!

Students from IIT Kharagpur are developing a device that will enable gesture control on devices including PCs, Laptop and even a Television.

Called as WaveMac sensor, this small device connects via USB to a laptop or a PC which enables it to be gesture controlled by wearing a small ring cap at the end of the finger. The device allows upto 15 feet of distance for accurate gesture controls.

At present, there not too many details available on their website, but from the video demo released by them, the device looks quite promising.

We got in touch with Harshit Shrivastava, one of students behind WaveMac and he was not too forthcoming about the product as yet. However, he did mention that they are planning to launch the device by the end of the year, and currently have only developed a prototype.
Using WaveMac gesture control, users can perform various tasks on their computers including playing games, opening applications, consuming multimedia content, browsing the web and many more.

Currently, WaveMac supports only PCs and Laptops, but they also plan to extend it for televisions to make them gesture controlled.

Harshit Shrivastava also told us that they are developing the product independently and not as a project at IIT Kharagpur.

It is quite interesting that WaveMac already has put up pre-order pricing on their website, even though they are currently only at prototype state. WaveMac basic is priced at USD 24.99, while the premium version is priced at USD 59.99. They have not mentioned any details about the difference between Basic and premium versions.

WaveMac is not the first device that has been conceived for gesture control – San Francisco based Leap Motion has a similar device priced at USD 79.99. Another company called Thalmic Labs has a device called MYO, which allows controlling the device through hand gesture. There are few more products across the world that are currently being developed offer similar functionality!

However, it is great to see Indian students, who are not even yet out of college, coming up with devices based on this cutting edge technology!

Samsung Galaxy Core Plus officially launched - With Dual-core processor and Android 4.2

Samsung has launched a new Android smartphone named as Samsung Galaxy Core Plus with a dual-core processor and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system in Taiwan today. It is essentially the successor of the previously launched phone, Samsung Galaxy Core for the budget conscious buyers and it is surely likely to be priced around in the same range.

Talking about the specifications, the Samsung Galaxy Core Plus doesn’t differ very much from its predecessor. It comes with a 4.3 inch WVGA TFT display with the resolution of 480*800 pixels. The phone is powered by a 1.2 GHz dual-core processor along with 768 MB of RAM, which is lesser than its predecessor that was launched with 1 GB RAM. It comes with 4 GB of internal storage, which is further expandable up-to 64 GB via external microSD card slot.

It sports a 5 MP rear camera along with a VGA front facing shooter with the standard video recording and calling features. Connectivity features of the new Samsung device include, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS and in addition to that it also offers Near Field Communication.

A noticeable difference between the new device and its predecessor is that the new phone runs on the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, while the previous edition was powered by a bit older, Android 4.1 JB operating system. And, considering the features it offers, we can expect it to arrive in India to compete against Motorola Moto G, which is set to launch in the country in early-January 2014.

KitKat to be out on Oct 28

Internet media is abuzz with speculations that the next version of Google's Android operating system is set for release on october 28th.

Nestle's @ KitKat twitter account has posted two tweets that suggest that the OS could be launched on Oct 28. The first hint came when KitKat's twitter handle posted an image of an Android logo with the title "Everybody dance now". The song "Everybody dance now" was released by C+C Music Factory, originally known as 'The 28th Street Crew'.

In what appears to be a second clue, KitKat posted a tweet with a picture showing KitKat chocolate bars stacked up in the formation reading "This Is It".

Nokia Lumia 525 is coming with 1GB RAM and Windows Phone 8 OS

The Nokia Lumia 520 is by far the best-selling WP8 smartphone, helping the platform to some remarkable growth over the past few months. This means it's only natural for Nokia to bring up a successor sooner rather than later. That would be the Lumia 525, which brings more RAM, which would expand the app compatibility of what was an already well working package. As you know some of the apps in the Windows Phone Store are incompatible with 512MB RAM smartphones.

The Nokia Lumia 525 packs double the RAM at 1 GB and comes with Windows Phone 8 with the Lumia Black update out of box. The rest of the specs are similar to the Lumia 520 - a 1,430 mAh battery, Nokia's Here Maps, Drive and Transit, 8 gigs of storage (expandable via microSD card), 5 MP camera (without a flash) and a dual-core 1 GHz Snapdragon S4.

The price is also a mystery but we're guessing it won't be much higher than the Lumia 520 (currently just below the €130 mark).

It's Windows Age : Nokia owns 90% of WP Market

Nokia – or rather Microsoft – now owns 90% of the Windows Phone market. The numbers are from the latest AdDuplex report and reveal other interesting facts of the WP landscape.

That the Nokia Lumia 520 accounts for over a quarter of all Windows Phone devices should come as no surprise. That Windows Phone 7 devices account for another quarter, however, is surprising.
We keep careful track of outdated Android versions, but it's worth keeping in mind that WP7 devices will never see Windows Phone 8.

Anyway, back to the Lumia 520. If you combine its share with that of the 521 – which is just a T-Mobile branded 520 – the market share jumps to nearly 30%. Also, this is the only phone with a double digit percentage when it comes to market share.

Second and third are the high-end Lumia 920 and the other low-end Lumia, the 620, both with under 9%. Other than the 920, there are virtually no high-end devices with an appreciable market share – neither the Lumia 1020 that has been out for a while, nor the 925 and 928 have managed to make a significant impact. The large-screened Nokia Lumia 625 has carved out a 2.9% share, though.
It's worth pointing out one more time that the above chart shows the worldwide marker share of all Windows Phone devices. There's just no HTC, Samsung or other maker that has a single phone with appreciable market share.
HTC does have 7% of the market, but Samsung and Huawei can't even break 2%.

In the US, the three major carriers have a WP dog in the game – Lumia 521 for T-Mobile is on top, followed by Verizon's Lumia 822 and the AT&T's Lumia 920 complete the Top 3.

In the UK, the 520 leads by a wide margin and oddly, it is followed by the old Lumia 800. HTC has third place with the 8S.

In India, the Nokia Lumia 520 has over 40% of the market followed by its low-end compatriots the Lumia 720 and 620. The 625 is at 7%, the affordable large-screen phone is meant to compete with cheap local brands.

From these numbers two things are clear – Microsoft practically owns its own market and it badly needs a high-end phone to achieve any sort of success.

Snapchat shares more images than Facebook

The photo messaging application Snapchat shares more than 400 million images each day, according to the company’s CEO Evan Spiegel.

The growth of the service is quite impressive considering the fact that the messaging app was sharing about 200 million images a day in June, and about 350 million in the month September.

Now, the newest numbers achieved by the company would mean that the app has surpassed popular services like the Facebook and Instagram. According to a report, Facebook sees 350 million uploads in a day from across the globe, while Instagram has about 50 million images every single day.

However, Snapchat’s numbers include both the images and the videos. The company also takes into count all the images that are sent to multiple receivers, thus turning one image to multiple snaps.

So, the accelerated growth in the recent times seems to be the reason behind the company rejecting the rumored $3 billion Facebook acquisition.

Google Play Music for iOS is now available with a free month of All Access

Nokia Music coming to iOS and Android

A published report out of China on Saturday says that web app versions of Nokia Music are coming to the iOS and Android platforms. This is despite other rumors that have the the service shut down once Microsoft's acquisition of Nokia closes. Others expect Nokia Music to merge with Xbox Muisic after Redmond based Microsoft signs on the dotted line to close the deal.

There is no indication when Nokia Music will be made available to iOS or Android. But we have some leaked training material along with images of the Nokia Music web app for other platforms. The Windows version of Nokia Music will be a native app and will support Windows 8/8.1 and Windows RT which means it will not be a Nokia exclusive.

Nokia Goldfinger and Moneypenny outed

Little is known about the phones, but it is thought that the phone with the codename Goldfinger will be Nokia’s new Lumia flagship device when Windows Phone Blue is released next year.

Previous rumours have hinted that the phone will come with a new feature called 3D touch. The technology is said to allow users to make gestures around the phone instead of touching the screen.

How similar it will be to the air gestures seen on the Samsung Galaxy S4 remains to be seen.

According to The Verge, the Goldfinger phone will allow users to interact with the phone through hand gestures above and to the side of the device.

It says that these gestures will include scrolling and flipping, letting Windows Phone 8.1 users to navigate their phone without needing to touch their screen.

Little is know about when the phone is likely to hit the shelves, but it is thought that Nokia might show the phone off at Mobile World Congress.

The event is when Microsoft is expected to show off Windows Phone 8.1. The update will bring a raft of new features, including an overhaul of notifications, improvements to multitasking and the introduction of a Siri-like Cortana voice assistant.

Microsoft Brings Facebook Login to Windows Phone Apps

Microsoft today announced that developers will be able to add support for Facebook Login to Windows and Windows Phone 8 applications. Apps that use Facebook Login allow device owners to sign in using their existing Facebook credentials rather than force them to create a separate account for that particular app.

This often increases consumer engagement with apps, as it removes a roadblock for some users who might seek to minimize the number of accounts they own across the web. Developers will also be able to tap into the Facebook social graph to improve the performance of their applications, and their relevancy to end users. The feature is being rolled out in Facebook beta 5.2 and Microsoft provides detailed instructions for developers on how to add Facebook Login to their apps.

If the user is already logged in to the Facebook Beta app, then the Facebook Login experience is meant to be simple, fast, and delightful. Your app initiates login and the Facebook app takes care of showing any authorization screens. On completion, your app is called back with the access token and can interact with Facebook. The following screenshots illustrate how this looks:

If the user is not logged in to the Facebook Beta app, they will be prompted for their user name and password the first time the app is launched. In addition, if a version of the Facebook app that supports Login is not installed on the phone the user will be prompted to download the app from the store.

Leaked: Alleged specs of HTC M8 flagship, FHD display and Snapdragon 800 expected

The Taiwanese smartphone maker, HTC is planning to introduce a new Android flagship smartphone in early 2014. The rumored flagship from the company is reported to be codenamed as HTC M8 and alleged specifications of the phone are also leaked. The popular online gadget leaker @evleaks has posted some information on the internals of the phone on its Twitter account.

According to the Evleaks, the HTC M8 will be featuring a 5 inch full HD display. It will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. Operating system in the phone will be the latest Android KitKat 4.4. Other details on the phone are not yet available but it is also expected to arrive with the fingerprint sensor, much like that is found on the HTC One Max phablet.

Recently, the phone surfaced online in some leaked photos featuring the blue color variant. HTC M8 is going to compete against the flagship smartphones from companies like Sony and Samsung. The Korean smartphone maker, Samsung is already reported to be developing Samsung Galaxy S5 for 2014.

Keep in mind that many rumors about the HTC One flagship suggested that it would launch with Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, but it ended up launching with Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor. Rumour: Samsung Galaxy smartphone with wraparound display in the works

Samsung recently launched the Galaxy Round with a curved display, but a new report reveals that the South Korean maker has more screen experiments up its sleeve.

Bloomberg reports that Samsung is working on a Galaxy smartphone that would sport three-sided display that would wrap around the edges of the smartphone. Further, the report quotes two people familiar with the Samsung plans and notes that each side of the display would operate separately and that the alleged wraparound display would work with company's Youm flexible display technology, first used for the curved display on the Galaxy Round.

As per the report, the Samsung's smartphone with wraparound display could be a device in the Galaxy S or Galaxy Note phablet series, or in a new smartphone lineup entirely. The report does not reveal an exact time frame for the release of the alleged Samsung Galaxy phone with wraparound display, but expects the alleged device to be out by the second half of 2014.

Unfortunately, the report did not shed any light on the innards of the alleged Galaxy smartphone with the wraparound display. The alleged Galaxy smartphone with a new display type might be an attempt to gauge consumers' reaction for phones with new form factors, though Samsung's first attempt with new display type, the Galaxy Round has been limited to selective markets only, and not been too popular.

Earlier this month, Samsung at its second analyst meeting in South Korea spilled the beans about its upcoming devices with newer technologies in coming years. Samsung's chief announced that company plans to release devices with folding displays, such as foldable phones - due in 2015.

Samsung also acknowledged room for improvement in its wearable tech device, the Galaxy Gear, and also revealed that the company has not been 100 percent satisfied by the product.

Jolla, First Sailfish OS Powered Smartphone Will Go On Sale On November 27

Jolla is the first smartphone running on Sailfish operating system and it will go on sale on November 27th this year. The phone is developed by Jolla, a company formed by a group of former Nokia employees. Company will start selling the phone on mentioned date in partnership with Finnish telecom operator DNA.

First, Jolla is planning to handover the 450 pre-booked devices and the rest will be available to buy at DNA Kauppa outlets beginning early December.

Nokia to add Bluetooth 4 LE to all Windows Phone 8 Lumias

An update called Lumia Black will enable the Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy technology for the entire WP8 Lumia lineup.

Nokia noted that the recent Amber update added Bluetooth LE to the Lumia 520, 620, 625, and 720. A future update dubbed Lumia Black will do the same for all other Windows Phone 8 Lumia handsets.

Built into Bluetooth 4.0, the low-energy technology lets you pair your phone with special accessories designed for health and fitness, among other areas. With Bluetooth LE, the accessory's battery charge also lasts considerable longer than it would using an older version of Bluetooth.

Asus to release Chromebooks

ASUS has confirmed plans to release its first Chromebooks in early 2014.

Asus announced that two new Chromebook products will ship worldwide towards the end of Q1 (spanning January through March) next year.

Rumours and industry reports have long hinted that the Taiwanese PC maker would expand into more computing areas, such as Chromebooks and smartphones, as a way to offset a sharp decline in its traditional Windows-based PC business.

According to rumours, their first set Chromebooks will consist of a 11.6″ model priced at US$199 and a larger 13.3″ version set to retail for US$249.

How to find everything you love

One thing I love about my Nokia Lumia phone with Windows Phone 8 is how easy it is to keep the things I need the most right where I can get at them, starting with the start screen where I keep my People Hub, messaging, web browser, personal and work e-mail, Pro Cam and Smart Cam plus my photos, social media apps, the latest weather, and Here Maps and Drive.

It’s great to be able to organise it the way it works best for me, with three different size tile depending on the importance of the app and how much information I want to see there. Press and hold any tile on your home screen to move it to a different part of the start screen, change its size or remove it. You can pin new items to the start screen from your app list, contacts, music and videos and various other places, simply press and hold the item then select “Pin to start screen”.

How to find things in lists

Finding things in a long list couldn’t be simpler; items are grouped by their initial letters. Just tap any letter and you’ll see a grid of the whole alphabet, tap the letter you need and go straight there!

This works in a number of places, including your People Hub, music player, Facebook app and once you have a certain number of apps installed, your app list too.

How to find people

The People Hub for me is one of the real highlights of Windows Phone in my Nokia Lumia. Whatever methods I have to communicate with my friends and family, they are all in one place: I can phone you, text you, mail you, write on your Facebook timeline, Tweet you or message you on LinkedIn – all without the need to open a single app! What’s more, when I choose to send you a mail, I have all of my connected e-mail accounts to choose from in the same place, so staying in touch has never been easier or more

flexible!

People hub automatically links records that can be identified as the same person, but you can link others too. Simply, opening a contact, tapping the link button at the bottom of the screen then select the link button to link.

How to find social updates

Another benefit of the People hub is that I can see my friend’s latest Facebook posts, Tweets, Linked-in posts et cetera in one handy “What’s new?” stream.

I can also check my friend’s latest photos here, too, as well as my conversation history with that person using any of the connected contact methods.

How to find top tunes

Ever been walking down the street, browsing at your local shopping centre or in a taxi, heard a song and thought “I remember that, who sang it?” or “Wow, that’s a great song, I need to know more!”? Happens to me all the time, but now with my Lumia I can just go to Bing Search, tap the musical note (enabled in selected countries) and my phone will listen to the song and tell me the title and artist!
