Under load the mLa can exert about 900grams of pressure before the clutch kicks in.

The front bucket is raised and lowered by a small gear on the left hand side of the model.  Steering is via the black gear on the roof.  Outriggers are extended by small gears at the back.  The rear bucket is moved by 2 small gears on the arm.

Part count will be about 600 pieces and is expected to cost about £45.

The set will have the following features:-

  • Gear knob on left side of the model will raise the platform.
  • Gear knob on right side of the model will turn the large turntable rotating the arm.
  • 2 Further gears inside the model will raise and lower the outriggers
  • Large gear knob at the back of the model will steer it.
  • Lifting bonnet and opening doors

  • Alternative model uses the same basic model but converts the back items to a front snow plow
  • New tyres
  • New orange colour for Technic
  • Return of pneumatic cylinders including the rare small cylinder
  • 2 Large pneumatic cylinders
  • 3 Pneumatic switches
  • 1 M motor and battery box which seem to go through a clutch system to control the front winch and something to do with the rear crane arm.  Suspect a pneumatic compressor or to rotate the turntable
  • Hand of God steering - basically the light beacon on the top will turn the steering wheel
  • Manually operated crane legs
  • 4 wheel drive
  • 4 Wheel suspension
  • Possibility of a 3 or 4 cylinder engine driven by the motor but we've been unable to substantiate it

At this stage it seems that some of the functions are under powered when using the medium motor.  The faults develop over time and the movements of the excavator start to slow down even with fresh batteries.  Lego says they're investigating the fault and some people have been offered full refunds when the products been returned to Lego.

Lego are investigating if it's a faulty batch of motors, or a generic fault with the design of the model.  They hope to have more of an idea within 7 days, and a redesigned model within 3 months.

This is the second fault to hit Lego this year.  Faults were found with the new PF remote control system earlier in the year.

Various issues have been reported with the model including

  • Motors heating up
  • Motors making sounds as if under high load
  • Tracks running at vastly different speeds
  • Slow slewing
  • Main arm raising very slowly
  • Main stick moving slowly
  • Actuators making unusual noises
  • Batteries not lasting long
  • When dismantled, there is visible dust on the gears and axles
