With the recent launch of iBooks 2 for the iPad, Apple shook up the textbook industry. With the easy-to-use iBooks Author tool, creating highly interactive textbooks for the iPad is now a breeze. These digital textbooks not only feature traditional text and pictures, but they can also show videos, audio, and interactive widgets too. Best part of all, textbooks in the iBookstore cost less than $15 and can be stored on an iPad forever. Apple launched iBooks 2 the day of its announcement and chose to specifically target high school students for its textbooks endeavor.

Apple’s education support

This really comes as no surprise when taking Apple’s long history supporting the US public education system into account. Since 1st grade for me, every school I’ve went to or enrolled in used mainly Apple computers. eMacs and iMacs decked out every computer lab, and laptops were available too. Since its launch, iPads have also been embraced throughout the education system as well, but not at the rate as Apple computers.

Wrong target market

Despite the iPad’s success and the huge, huge potential for digital textbooks on the device, targeting high school students was not the correct move for Apple, and I’ll tell you why. For preemptive clarification, I’m not saying high school students wouldn’t greatly benefit from them, I’m just saying from a marketing and growth standpoint, college students would have been a better target.

iPads are expensive

Normally, high school textbooks are supplied to each student at no cost. In order for the digital textbooks to catch on, each student would need an iPad. The student would either have to purchase their own iPad or the school would have to supply and iPad for each student. However, there are problems with each of these options.

The cheapest iPad is $500, and initially requiring students to pay $0 a year for textbooks and then expecting them to drop $500 for an iPad is ridiculous. An iPad is a luxury item that is simply out of reach for many families. On a similar note, schools don’t have enough money as it is, so buying iPads to lend to each student is clearly out of the question. Additionally, the potential of theft, loss, and damage to the iPads make this scenario even more unreasonable.

What about college students?

Can you think of a type of student who does need to buy their own textbooks? Apple’s digital textbooks seem to be better suited for college students. Each semester, many college students spend close to $500 on textbooks. I could easily see students spending a little extra one semester on an iPad and pairing it with the much cheaper digital textbooks. Spread out over a four-year graduation plan, a $500 iPad would only cost around $65 per semester.

While there’s no doubt that high school students would love to learn on the Apple tablet, their high price is preventing them from wide adoption. In time, prices will fall. But, until then, I think iBooks 2 will first catch on in colleges and then work its way to high schools.

Samsung has been known primarily for its high end devices. However, with the release of the Omnia W, the Korean giant has set its sights on budget consumers while still providing some of the features associated with its more premium models. This year, ZTE unleashed its own take on the budget smartphone with the Tania. The following is a comparison of the two offerings to see which provides the better value.

Dimensions and Form

• ZTE Tania – 128.6 mm x 67.8 mm x 10.7mm, 158g
• Samsung Omnia W – 115.6 x 58.8 x 10.9 mm, 115g

Cosmetically the Omnia W is simple but elegant. Two touch-sensitive buttons and a physical Home button are placed on the face. The build is a bit flimsy but extremely lightweight. Comparatively, the ZTE Tania has an aesthetically pleasing design but is a tad bulky, tipping the scales at 158 grams.

Winner: Samsung Omnia W

Display Screen

• ZTE Tania – 4.3-inch TFT multi-touch capacitive screen, 800 x 480 pixel resolution
• Samsung Omnia W – 3.7 inch Super AMOLED, 800 x 480 pixel resolution

In terms of resolution, both the Samsung Omnia W and ZTE Tania have the same number of pixels. The Tania offers a slightly larger screen, but doing so translates to a smaller pixel density of 217 ppi to the 252 ppi in the Omnia. Furthermore, the proprietary Super AMOLED screen has deeper blacks and better viewing angles all while consuming precipitously less power than a TFT touchscreen.

Winner: Samsung Omnia W

Processing Power

• ZTE Tania – 1GHz Snapdragon Processor with Adreno 205 GPU
• Samsung Omnia W – 1.4 single-core Qualcomm Scorpion CPU with Adreno 2.5 GPU

The Tania and the Omnia each are equipped with single core processors with comparable GPUs and 512MB of RAM. The result is a marginal difference in speed, but virtually no difference in practical application. Both devices are capable of doing precisely what they are designed to, which is to perform modest, fairly quotidian tasks and play simple games.

Winner: Draw

Operating System

• ZTE Tania – Windows Phone Mango 7.5
• Samsung Omnia W – Windows Phone Mango 7.5

The simplicity of the Windows Phone Mango 7.5 OS makes it the ideal match for budget smartphone owners, many of whom are satisfied with base features and easy to use apps. The latest update to the Mango OS brings greater integration of many common social media and networking tools. An improved Live Tile display, an HTML 5 ready Internet Explorer, and accelerated GPU combine to make navigation intuitive and hassle free. The over 60,000 apps in the Windows Phone Marketplace are all supported by advertisements and come at no cost to the user.

Winner: Draw

Camera

• ZTE Tania – 5MP primary camera, 2592 x 1944 pixel resolution
• Samsung Omnia W – 5MP primary camera, 2592 x 1944 pixel resolution

Most of the features on both phones are the same ones you’ll find on every smartphone, such as autofocus, geo-tagging and 720p video capture. However, ZTE failed to incorporate a flash mechanism into the build, whereas Samsung provides a standard LED flash for taking pictures in dark areas.

Winner: Samsung Omnia W

When placing the two phones head to head, the Samsung Omnia W is a marginally superior device. On the other hand, when it comes to budget smartphones, the specifications come secondary to the cost. Although the Samsung Omnia W is a slightly more advanced device, it generally will be priced at £50 more than the ZTE Tania, making the latter the more attractive bargain.

There’s an app for everything under the sun. Some are fun, some are silly and some are incredibly useful. They can help you get more organized, lose weight and find great deals. What you may not realize is that there are also apps that can literally put extra cash in your pocket.

Gigwalk

This app makes secret shopping more profitable and easier. It requires filling out a brief registration and allowing the company to track your location. The phone will send you jobs that are near your location, allowing you to make some fast cash without going too far out of our way. Jobs include basic tasks like taking pictures of certain spots or making an alcoholic purchase and confirming if the cashier followed rules by checking your ID. Some of the jobs reward you with up to ten dollars cash while others will pay out a “streetcred” points that can be used to help you net more lucrative jobs.

Field Agent is another app that pays between three and eight dollars per job. The jobs may involve reviewing a company display to ensure that it’s right or reviewing a company’s signs.

Create an App

If you’ve ever had an idea for an app, but let it go because you don’t know how to do programming, you will be thrilled to know that there is a site for you. Special sites like appmakr will allow you to create apps, even if you know nothing about programming. Once your app is built, you just need to pay a $99 dollar annual fee to have an Apple Developer account, and then your app will be available to the general public.

CheckPoints

This app doesn’t pay out in dollars, but it does pay in points that can be used to purchase gift certificates. As you go through a store, you will scan barcodes of various products. The companies are hoping that you’ll make some extra purchases along the way, but you get the points whether you purchase the items or not.

MyLikes

Advertisers pay a ton of money to get their information out to the public, and they are not willing to pay you to be the one delivering the message. This app will let you create an endorsement for a product or service you love. Share the information on Facebook, YouTube, Tumblr or Twitter, and see how many people click on your endorsement. The companies will pay you for clicks on the link, making this easy, residual money. You can also take pictures of your favorite products or places, allowing you to draw more clicks and enjoy higher earnings.

These easy ways to make money will help you pay for your cell phone bill, or buy the latest and greatest gadgets. Whether you are trying to get out of debt, or just want some extra spending cash for going to the movies, these apps can help you get there. Earn free gift cards, get extra cash for a night out on the town and work on building residual income that will continue rewarding you.

If you’ve ever tried to capture a 3D image of an object with a traditional scanner or digital camera, you probably know how difficult it can be. Traditional scanners are only designed to capture images of documents, photographs, and other flat items, for example. The average digital camera, on the other hand, won’t always be able to capture quality 3D images either.

With its odd looking plastic arm rising above the top of the machine, the HP TopShot 3D scanner certainly doesn’t look like your average scanner and printer. After using this unique scanner just once, you’ll quickly realize that it certainly isn’t like your run of the mill scanner and printer.

So, what exactly makes the HP TopShot 3D scanner so unique?

Design

The HP TopShot 3D scanner was designed to capture quality 3D images of small objects. The bottom of this machine looks like a scare black plastic box, much like other scanners and printers on the market today. It also has a 3.5 inch color touch screen, which makes controlling the unit a breeze. However, it’s the top of the machine that makes it unique.

It has a white platform sitting right on top of the black box, and an unusual looking black arm extending above the platform. This arm is hinged, so it can be folded down flush with the top of the machine when not in use.

Images

To capture a 3D image, an object is placed on the white platform of the HP TopShot scanner. The object in question can be nearly anything you want, such as merchandise, fruit, or even various body parts. Once the scan is started, the cameras in located in the extended arm take six different pictures. These pictures are taken at three different angles, each with and without a flash, and at different exposure levels.

When the machine is done taking the pictures, it attempts to combine all six images into one perfect 3D image. To do this, in theory, it takes all of the best elements of each picture and puts them together.

Versatility

Besides scanning three-dimensional objects, the HP TopShot 3D scanner can also be used to scan documents and photographs, along with other flat objects. There’s also an app available that allows you to scan several business cards and transfer the information to your contact list in Outlook.

What you do with your images after the scan is complete is completely up to you. For instance, you can choose to store them on your computer or print them right away at 600×600 dpi. Using an app, you can also send them directly to the internet. When doing this, you can choose to email the images or upload them to one of the many online storage websites, including Google Docs.

Research recently released by Ovum has stated that Google’s Android mobile operating system is now the first choice for mobile app developers, taking the lead from their main rival, Apple.

Rising from fifth to second favourite development platform in a year is a great achievement for the search giant, with more developers preferring to develop their apps on the operating system before moving over to support rival systems. Mobile web developers typically don’t throw all their eggs in one basket and make their app for just one system, however Android could see an advantage if their apps receive an earlier release date as well as the ego boost of being deemed the most important platform by the people who make apps for them.

With mobile app sales reaching 1.2 billion in the last week of 2011, with 81 million coming from the UK alone, there is no doubt that the mobile application industry is a huge one, especially with the record sales figures for smartphones and the increase of low cost Android handsets and tablets now available on the market.

Even with the rise in popularity of Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry applications it is still very much a two horse race, with the iPhone, which recorded 37 million sales in the last quarter of 2011 alone, still remaining well up there with Android in terms of importance as a platform to distribute apps on. How much traction the lagging platforms will receive in 2012 is hard to say, but with Microsoft’s new mobile platform being released this year could see a revival; however will it receive enough sales to convince developers that it is also another essential platform for development?

The appeal of developing for both Apple and Android comes from their distribution platforms. With over half a million apps already up for grabs in Apple’s App Store, each of which have to meet Apple’s high standards to be allowed entry, there is no doubt that iPhone is the handset for people who like a wide choice. However, with only one hundred thousand apps less than Apple’s counterpart, and with Google making extra effort this year to standardise app development to help the performance of its apps, the Android Market could be the place to be to improve app sales.

While they aren’t currently the most popular distribution methods, third party stores such as Appitalism offer a wide range of apps for both of the major smartphone players, and with companies such as Amazon releasing their own and the potential for social media sites to become a top recommend we could be seeing a change in the way developers distribute their apps to the masses.

If the Cloud works, then it behoves bigger businesses to get in on it. That’s a simple given. So clearly building corporate confidence in the technology will help to introduce more businesses to its benefits.

The key question, then, is this. Is the Cloud ready for big business, or indeed for any business at all? I mean, we hear the word being bandied around every day, but it still isn’t clear whether the Cloud is really anything new or definable – or just another industry buzzword for a bunch of existing technologies, repackaged to sell a shiny new service we don’t need.

The idea behind the Cloud is simple enough. You no longer “own” your own software tools, instead you hire them from a company that is responsible for maintaining them all, buying the licences and ensuring that you always have access to the latest technology in your service package. The location of all the services you buy is more conceptual than actual – hence the name. When you live and work “in the Cloud”, you take down both the software tools you use and the processing power to make them run properly from discrete locations owned or leased by the company from which you are purchasing time and backup.

So what’s not to like? At first glance not much, though the continuing failure of the big business world to seriously take up the Cloud as a total proposition, suggests that there are still concerns over the reliability of the service. Directors of major companies I have spoken to are convinced that the security issues inherent in Cloud computing are not yet satisfactorily resolved – a problem that could ironically be solved quicker if there was more money coming into the sector from big businesses.

The basic security concern regarding the Cloud – that storing your own data on someone else’s servers, which are in turn being shared by multiple other businesses – is fairly robust. If you relinquish your data to a third party you are immediately adding links in the security chain that need not be there – and the more sensitive your data is the less likely you are to be willing to take the risk.

So instead we need to look at other ways in which the Cloud is applied – and whether these can be utilised by major businesses.

Email is often the first thing that bigger businesses will allow to move up into the Cloud. In some ways you could see that as odd, given that email represents a potential security breach of the highest order – but then you have to recognise that email is by its very nature a security breach waiting to happen anyway. In other words: no company worth its salt allows its employees to send information via email when that information is critical or not for general consumption.

Where the Cloud wins at the moment is in the leisure market. The world of the smartphone is awash with Cloud applications, which users access from their mobile devices but which are hosted and owned elsewhere. And the domestic market is clearly getting something from the Cloud that it couldn’t otherwise enjoy. Cloud technology allows smartphones to be turned into communications hubs with a crossover appeal that blurs the boundaries between different types of technology use.

The core question is probably not so much whether the Cloud is any good, but whether it is appropriate for big business use. The kinds of things that we have been seeing stored in the Cloud for years – personal email, social media pages and account information, public file uploads – are all essentially communicative rather than work based. Very few of us domestically keep report files containing third party data on someone else’s server – but we all keep our personal emails and pictures there.

At the end of the day security is the key issue. Facebook, for example, keeps your data effectively secure by leaving the final say on who gets to read it with you the user. But Facebook also sells your personal information to advertisers. And that’s exactly the kind of thing that would worry a big business considering getting more involved in the Cloud.

Before Apple released the iPad in 2010, this question was not really one which troubled most people. Tablet computers were not widely available and lacked mainstream popularity. Now it can be tough to work out whether a traditional laptop or a new tablet is suitable to meet your needs. To get to the bottom of this it is necessary to establish the main differences between the devices and determine whether or not each one’s features will fit your requirements.

Laptops have remained fundamentally unchanged for the past couple of decades. You still get a clamshell-style body which houses a screen on the top half and a full QWERTY keyboard on the bottom, with all sorts of inputs and outputs arrayed around the side. Dual- or quad-core processors and between 2GB and 4GB of RAM are common on even the more affordable laptops, while the actual size of a typical machine depends largely on its screen, with 10.1-inch netbooks sitting alongside 17-inch media powerhouses.

You can choose between laptops running Windows 7 or Apple’s OSX, the latter making up the famous MacBook range. These platforms are compatible with vast libraries of software, from games to word processors and video editing suites and control typically comes from a trackpad system that controls an onscreen cursor in the same way that a mouse would for a desktop PC.

Tablets are defined by their reliance on touchscreen interfaces rather than physical keys and screen sizes range between 7 inches and 10.1 inches. They are typically lighter than laptops, with the iPad 2 weighing in at around 600 grams while a typical laptop can be up to 2Kg or more, depending on the model. Single- and dual-core processors are usually the driving force behind tablets, while storage space can range from 8GB to 64GB, a lot less than the 250GB plus hard drives you will find on laptops.

There are two main tablet operating systems. iOS is the platform developed by Apple and made available only on the iPad range, while Android 3.0/4.0 is Google’s software package and can be found on tablets from manufacturers including Samsung, HTC, Motorola and many others. There are hundreds of thousands of applications available from the iPad’s App Store and the Android Market. An app can range in complexity from simple and free to very powerful and available only at a price. However, in general, tablet software is still cheaper than programs designed for laptops when you look at the paid-for end of the market.

Whether you choose a laptop or a tablet largely depends on what you think you will be using your portable computing device to achieve. For those who want to edit documents, run processor-intensive programs, store entire music collections and enjoy the best of the internet, a laptop computer might be the answer. This is because the lack of physical keyboards makes tablets suitable only for entering small amounts of text at a slower pace.

In addition, tablet operating systems and web browsers are not able to handle some online content that is encoded in Flash. Updates are dictated by the manufacturers, not by the individual developers, so a laptop is more immediately flexible when it comes to changes and improvements.

On the other hand, a tablet will let you enjoy media files, movies, games, text-based websites and eBooks in a far more natural way than a laptop while you are out and about or just slouched on your sofa. Additionally, the growing creative capabilities of apps such as GarageBand show that tablets have room to grow. The choice you make will depend on your own particular requirements.

Everyone loves to give and receive the latest and greatest in the world of technology, but so many of the things people want are too expensive to give as a gift, particularly on a holiday like Valentine’s Day. Fortunately, there are plenty of the hottest, newest gadgets out there that can be had for under $100. These are some of the most popular tech gifts that will please even the pickiest person, without the kind of price tag that makes someone need to take out payday loans to afford it.

Kindle – $79 and $99

The latest Kindle to hit the shelves is the Kindle Fire, a $199 color e-reader and media consumption device. But for those who simply love to read, Amazon has two Kindles for under $100. The Kindle for $79 offers readers the ability to hold up to 1,400 books, all in a package that weighs less than six ounces and has a one-month battery life. For twenty more dollars, the $99 Kindle Touch holds up to 3,000 books, and has a touch screen as well as a two-month battery life. The Kindle Touch also has audio capabilities, offering users the ability to listen to audio books and mp3s, with support for text-to-speech. Both Kindles have built in Wi-Fi and advanced E Ink displays that read just like paper.

iPod Shuffle – $49

The iPod Shuffle is perfect for anyone who enjoys listening to music on the go. With a 2GB hard drive, the iPod Shuffle can hold hundreds of songs in its lightweight package. It easily clips to clothing, making it a great choice for anyone who wants to keep their hands free, has a battery that lasts up to 15 hours, and comes in five bright colors. Additionally, the latest generation of the iPod Shuffle has VoiceOver technology, which allows users to press the VoiceOver button to hear the name of the song, the playlist name, the artist, and how much battery is left. The iPod Shuffle comes with its own headphones and USB cable for recharging, and if purchased directly from the Apple Store, it can be engraved for free with a personalized name or message.

Roku 2 – $99.99, $79.99, and $59.99

Roku 2 comes in three different models, all under $100. The two most expensive models come with a few extra features, but all three do basically the same thing, which is stream content from the web. All three Roku 2 boxes have built-in wireless, allowing users to stream video and audio from online onto their television. There’s no monthly subscription fee, but users can use their Roku 2 with existing subscriptions, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Hulu Plus, or Pandora. Barely larger than the size of a coaster, Roku 2 also takes up very little space. It’s a great gift for anyone who’s media-hungry and would prefer watching or listening to their online content on their television.

In what could be a very smart move, Samsung has chosen to join their Bada mobile operating system with another. The second mobile operating system is called Tizen and is based on Linux, just like Bada. Read on to find out more on this platform shakeup here in this quick article.

Free Is Good, Especially If It Has To Do With Smartphones

The word “free” seems to be taking both the internet and the mobile revolution to higher levels. The Linux platform has become much more popular than in recent years. Now, no less than five mobile operating systems are created with Linux as their foundation. The most popular at the moment is Android, which has been used by Samsung extensively to become one of the most popular smartphone brands in the world. The ride was a quick one to the top, since Nokia took a nose dive in market share.

Bada Was Not On The Radar Until Now

It was the well-informed analysts who were paying attention to the Samsung Bada platform. It has had a modest growth, even displacing the Windows Phone mobile operating system from Microsoft. It will be boosted by work from Intel, the famous chip maker, who revealed they had been working on some heavy duty processors last week. The Bada mobile operating system will be joined and mixed with Tizen. Tizen has its roots in the open source Linux operating system. If it seems that Linux has had a hand in all these systems, it is no coincidence. Intel had been working on their own Linux-based “Moblin” mobile operating system before Nokia lost their footing.

Changes Prevail And Samsung Is Thinking Of Leaving Android

The failure of Nokia left Intel with little choice but to look for another partner. Samsung was the perfect choice. A quick look at the negative side of Android will show that Microsoft is creating a licensing fee empire because of a perceived patent dispute between themselves and Google, the creator of Android. At the moment Microsoft makes $5 dollars for every HTC smartphone sold that uses Android. They also have used patents to make Samsung pay an undisclosed sum for every Android smartphone they sell. This makes it very attractive for Samsung to go ahead and dump Android for this new Bada-Tizen mobile operating system.

Getting Out From Under The Thumb Of Microsoft

People are already excited about the new deal between Intel and Samsung with their new quest for freedom from Microsoft rule. The unofficial word is that Microsoft makes $15 dollars for every sale of a Samsung Android smartphone. At this rate, Microsoft is probably making more off of penalizing other platforms than it does on its own unpopular platform, Windows Phone 7. Tizen will not be exactly like other mobile operating systems, it will be bringing in more HTML5 technology than its counterparts. It is assumed that it will be able to run Android apps as well.
