Google Adsense sometimes displays a Public Service Ad (PSA) on the pages monetized through Google Adsense. These PSAs are non paying ads and are meant for charity. Google defines Public Service Ad as

PSAs are non-profit organization ads that are served to pages when targeted ads are unavailable, or when Google is unable to gather content from the page. Publishers do not receive earnings for clicks made on PSAs.
Some of the main reasons for PSA being displayed are:
1) The page is not crwaled by google or in same way has restricted access (like through robots.txt)
2) No relevant ads are available for content related to the page.
3) Modification in ad code.
You can read the complete list of reasons here.

Today, I read a post by Amit Agarwal on Digital Inspiration, which questioned about the recently served.
Even I was feeling bit fishy about the same. I have seen quite a number of pages being served with that election 2008 PSA. Although I strongly feel that there should be some relevant ad available for the content of those pages.

Also that election 2008 page is certainly not non commercial. Still Google displayed the ad as PSA and publishers were not paid for it.

And now guess what. After all this questions raised, the election 2008 page on google server is deleted.
Check it out here

The page existed well as it has pagerank 6.
Also here is the screenshot of page from google cache. (click to enlarge)

I usually feel bad while questioning Google, but someone needs to answer this. They owe an answer to all adsense publishers.

A tutorial which helps to download music from enips after the download button is removed from esnips.

eSnips, a popular upload site has disabled the default download option from music files last year. Now you can only download those music files which are allowed to be downloaded by original uploaders. When this changes were enforced on esnips, all the previously uploaded music files were set to ‘no download’ option by default, and all users (uploaders) were given a choice to change this option by changing their account settings. However most of the uploaders never bothered to change the settings. Hence most of the music files are now in listen only mode at esnipes.
Here is a small tutorial which allows you to download any music file from esnips.

How to download music from esnips
Step 1) You need Firefox browser. If don’t have it yet download it from here. Firefox is free and is far better than Internet Explorer. Now when you have Firefox installed, you can proceed to step 2.

Step 2) Download and install a popular firefox addon Greasemonkey. You can get it from here
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/748
After installing the Greasemonkey addon, you will see a small icon (a monkey) in the bottom right of your browser.

Step 3) Download this Greasemonkey user script
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/16714
UserScripts.org is a community of developers which have thousands of free scripts.
I recommend to restart the Firefox once both Greasemonkey and script are installed

Step 4) Once this script is installed, you will see a download option below each music file. Click that link to download the music file.
Here are the screenshots of a same music file page before and after the installation of this script.

Before installig the Greasemonkey script

After installing Greasemonkey script.

You can disable the script when you dont want it.

How to disable Greasemonkey or any Greasemonkey script?
Just click the Greasemoney icon once to disable it. When clicked once the icon will become grey which denotes that Greasemonkey is disabled.

You can enable it again by clicking the icon once.

To disable a particular Greasemonkey script follow these steps.
1) Right click on Greasemonkey icon and cmose the option ‘Manage User Scripts’

This will pop up a script manager window.

2) From left column of the window choose the scrpt you want to disable. There is a check box ‘Enable’. Uncheck this box to disable the script. (See screenshot below).

Close this window and you are done.

While downloading music files, make sure you do not violate Copyright Laws.
Hope this tutorial helps you. If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to ask in comment space.

Last year, I wrote a tutorial about using ‘Proxy in Firefox‘ on my old blog. Today I was doing a bit research on same topic (Yes I am planning to write another informative tutorial on the same topic).
While googling the things out, I found an excat copy of my old post on a blog hosted on wordpress.com. That blogpost was a complete ripoff of my original post. Even screenshots used in that posts were hotlinked from my blogger account. No attribution or linkback was provided to my blog or blogpost.

Without a delay, I contacted the wordpress.com support and opened a thread in their support forum.

[See Thread Here]

And I was surprised to see official responses rolling in in couple of minutes. The forum moderator Bubel responded in my thread, and with in 15 minutes, I got an email from wordpress support team stating that duplicate post is removed from that wordpress.com hosted blog.
Seems like Wordpress.com takes plagiarism very seriously.

I appreciate their support and quick response.

Note: If you have any such issue with blogs hosted on wordpress.com, please notify them using the procedure mentioned here.

This is a quick guide which explains the copyrights and Creative Commons attributes of images on flickr and how to search for an appropriate image under proper CC license. Understanding these restrictions will help you in finding right (and trouble free) images for your site or blog.

Flickr is one of the largest photo sharing web resource. It hosts millions of images taken my amateur and professional photographers.

This is a quick guide which explains the copyrights and Creative Commons attributes of images on flickr and how to search for an appropriate image under proper CC license. Understanding these restrictions will help you in finding right (and trouble free) images for your site or blog.

Understanding different License conditions as per Creative Commons:
First you need to understand the following four conditions

Attribution

Means you can copy, distribute and display the images(or any other piece of work). Also you can create derivative of the image. You can alter and modify the image at your will.. All you need to do is provide proper credit to original owner (Like linking back to the profile of uploader or direct flickr image page).

Noncommercial

Means you can copy, display and distribute the work but only for non commercial purpose.

No Derivative Works

Means you can copy, display and distribute the work as it is. You can not modify the work in any form.

Share Alike

Means you can use the image or work and distribute or display it under the same license to this one.

Flickr and CC License:
Images on flickr are either strictly copyrighted or fall under six CC license. Images marked as copyrighted (All Rights Reserved) are not meant to be copied or used in any any form. You cannot display or use these images until and unless you have prior permission from original author. Rest, other images are uploaded under following sic license.

Attribution License

Images uploaded under this license are best to use for your blog or site. You can modify these images and use it in any form you like. All you need to do is provide a proper credit and linkback to original owner.
Click here to search Images under Attribution License

Attribution-NoDerivs License

You can use these images as long as you credit the photographer and do not modimy the image. Images under this license are also a fair good deal for your blog or site.
Click here to search Images under Attribution-NoDerivs License

Attribution-NonCommercial License

You are free to modify and use these images by providing proper credit to photographer (or uploader). These images cannot be used for any commercial purpose. So if your blog or site is monetized by any paid advertising like Google Adsense, better not to use these type of images.
Also while using these type of images, its necessary to look into future possibilities of monetizing your blog/site. Your site/blog may not be displaying any paid advertisements right now, but in future you may change your mind and start monetizing the ad spaces. So better avoid these type of images on your webpage.
Click here to search Images under Attribution-NonCommercial License

Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs License

Same as above one. But you are restricted to modify the images in any form and use them as it is.
Click here to search Images under Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivs License

Attribution-ShareAlike License

You are free to use and modify the images until you credit the photographer release the work under same license.
Click here to search Images under Attribution-ShareAlike License

Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License

Same as above. But the images cannot be used for any commercial purpose. You cannot use these type of images if your webpage as any paid ad space (like banners, text links or Contextual ads like Google adsense).
Click here to search Images under Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike License

I hope you will find above tutorial helpful If you have any questions or suggestions, feel free to ask in comment space of this blog entry.

After a long span of shear laziness I have finally decided to upgrade ‘MeetArpit.com’ to Wordpress 2.5.1. Although Wordpress 2.6 series is out, but for some reasons I am never comfortable with latest releases of software (Like am yet to try Windows Vista).
Dreamhost provides a single click upgrade of wordpress through its graphical interface panel, but I opted to go for a manual upgrade. Wordpress is simply superb.

I have also changed the theme of this blog. The current theme is StudioPress by Daniel (of Daily Blog Tips).

Here Are the Screenshots.

Old Theme

New Theme

Hope I won’t get lazy this time and will post more on this blog.

What is EPP code?
Extensible Provisioning Protocol known as EPP in short is a robust protocol designed to communicate between different domain registrars and domain registries.

What is the use of EPP?
As a end user we need EPP only when we want to transfer our domain name(s) from one registrar to another. Its a sort of authorization code to prevent fraudulent domain transfers and domain hijacking.

Basically I never found a need to learn anything about EPP until last month. Actually what happened is I sold one of my domain ( offcourse at good price) and the buyer asked me to push the domain in his Namecheap account. I have all my domain with Godaddy. So what I did is I transferred my domain to Namecheap account first and then pushed it to buyer’s Namecheap account.

In the whole process of transferring the domain from Godaddy to Namecheap, I got struck at this EPP thing. I initiated the transfer and added the domain in my Namecheap account. Then I saw the message at Namecheap asking for EPP. And trust me, it was so confusing to get that EPP from Godaddy. But finally I managed to get it.
So here is Step by Step guide to get EPP code from Godaddy.

Step 1: Login to your Godaddy account. They have recently changed the looks of their account main page and now it looks like this. (click to enlarge the image)

Step 2: Now look for domains drop down menu in upper left corder and select the option of ‘My Domains’ from it. (click to enlarge the image)

Step 3: This will take you to the page where all your registered domains are listed. Click on the domain name (click to enlarge the image)

Step 4: Now search for the option ‘Authorization Code’., and click ‘Send by Email’. (click to enlarge the image)

Step 5: You will get a confirmation screen message. Click ok and you are done. Make sure the administrative email id on Godaddy account is correct and accessible.

You will get the requested EPP code in your mail box ( email id listed as administrative email in Godaddy account) with in few minutes. (click to enlarge the image)

Godaddy is one of the best domain registrars in industry. But no one likes it when a client take their business away from them. Same is the case here. Godaddy (and other domain registrars) will try their best to stop you from transferring the domain(s) to other domain registrar. So make sure you don’t give them any reason to cancel your transfer. Any mistake from your part will lead to cancellation of domain transfer.

Here are some more tips for a smooth domain transfer from Godaddy to other registrar.
1) Make sure your domain is unlocked before before starting the process of transfer.
2) If you have opted for the option of domains by proxy, cancel it before initiating the process.
3) Godday knowledgebase clearly states that
ICANN regulations prohibit transferring a domain name that has been registered or previously transferred within the last 60 days.
So dont try to transfer the domain if it do not qualify the above criteria. The transfer will be denied for sure.

There is a good read about this on ICANN.org.

Hope this post help you. I will keep this updated.
If you have any question, drop me a comment and I will try my best to help you.

You might be wondering why I have stop to update my blog. Here is answers to few of your questions.

Ques: Is MeetArpit.com dead?
Ans: No. Its alive and is ready to grow.

Ques: Why no new post since long?
Ans: I was just taking a (not so small) break from blogging. During this break, I explored some other fields on internet and will keep posting about them in future.

Ques: But your blog was doing ok. Why the hell you left is abandoned?
Ans: I never left my blog abandoned. I simply stopped writing new posts. However I was actively moderating the comments and was replying all the emails and queries I get.
Sorry Rajavanya, I think I dint replied your comment. Sorry for that.

Ques: Now what?
Ans: Nothing very special. I am just re-planning my blogging schedule. My current goal is to write two to three quality posts per week. Also I am very much Inspired my SEO Empire post on Eli’s blog. So I feel like building my own SEO Empire. If you don’t know who Eli is or haven’t read his SEO Empire post, do read it here.

Ques: Arrggghhh.. I am just a casual internet browser who dropped to this page through some link or search engine. I dont know who Arpit is and what MeetArpit.com is. What should I do?
Ans: Thats for the remark. MeetArpit.com is the blog you are reading right now and Arpit is the person behind this blog. And now when you are here, please go through the archives and consider subscribing to my blog feed. Also If you have any questions, feel free to contact me.

No more questions please.
I already have a ample sense of guilty for not updating this blog. Sorry if I have disappointed my readers. But I can just say that..

I am Back…
