NASA's biggest runs Novell's SLES 10

The largest machine at NASA Ames is the "Columbia" Itanium-InfiniBand cluster, which runs Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Columbia is actually three different generations of Altix servers, with a total of 10,240 cores. The first piece was comprised of air-cooled Altix 3700s, followed by Altix 3700 BX2 machines, which came equipped with water jackets to take the heat out of the racks. The Altix 4700 portions of the Columbia cluster also have water jackets.
Interestingly enough, we have an instance of this Operating System running in our datacenter, our Novell Conferencing Server, and Novell has plans to roll this Enterprise Linux Server out as their main platform in the future, with their ever popular NetWare™ platform running in a virtualized space.

If you would like to read more about this development at NASA and other plans that they are making with Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10, click here.

NASA, SGI and Novell's SLES 10

NASA's plan to resume manned missions to the moon, and eventually manned exploration of Mars, is one of the chief reasons for securing a new, exceptionally powerful computing resource. In addition to space exploration, the new SGI supercomputer will support NASA's aeronautics, science and space operations initiatives.
This new supercomputer system will be powered by Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10.
There are a lot of choices in the storage industry, but when it comes to
ease-of-use and efficiency there is a clear winner. The Compellent SAN was
recently named the Microsoft Storage Solutions Partner of the Year, garnered
