Cloud Expo Netherlands

Since about 2008, cloud computing has seen more doors open and momentum started to increase which I guess was pushed a little buy the economic climate and the sales pitch of cloud being more financially viable. Now, we are seeing new conferences and event emerging that are cloud related. Many take place in the US, but are increasingly growing on a global scale.

Myself, having lived in Europe for the past 6 or so years has seen this go from something of just talk to real interest and implementation. We, as North Americans have always envied Europe on their relaxed lifestyles, great beaches, cultured cuisine and much more.

Lately, I've noticed a grass root approach whereby there seems to be a lot of localization when it comes to providing cloud oriented services. Lets take Cloud Expo which was held around the beginning of the second week of December 2010. The location was Utrecht (about 30 min train ride from Amsterdam). As I arrived, the first thing I noticed was that it was kinda small. You could zip around the tradeshow in under 5 min, but there still was enough to keep you busy for a little while.

One main issue was that all copy/material was in Dutch, but the good thing was that even if I could not understand any of it, about 90%+ of the Dutch population speaks English. Wonderful news! The big names were there of course like Cisco and Microsoft and a few other booths offering PaaS and IaaS services. I guess the highlight of my time there was being able to speak with Ajax.org and to find out what others had to offer.

Getting back to grassroots. 95% of the companies there were local and the ones that weren't, were larger companies with offices in the Netherlands. The approach felt more personal as the Dutch still do business face to face and the comfort and security of knowing that if they need something, all they have to do is call or go to the office. It made me think, with all this remote talk going on, are we becoming more distant from physically interacting. Well, that's something to discuss for another day.

I just wanted to add that it was an enjoyable conference and it was a unique experience, though it did feel more people were trying to sell you rather than buy from you.

Bundling Competitor Products for a Better Tomorrow

I want everyone to take a moment to think about their competition. Not just the competition, but whoever they believe their arch nemesis is in the arena of capitalism. Now I want you to think about bundling their product, service, and so forth with your own products.

Sorta weird and somewhat against the whole competitive market theme isn’t it?

Now let’s take Microsoft and the EU. The web browser market is an extremely competitive market where the number 1 product (IE) is loosing market share in vast quantities. How vast you may ask? In other industries the differences in market share are the types of shifts that occur in a decade or longer (Microsoft lost 11.5% market share in less than two years where as a number one product like Coke took 10 years to lose 15%).

This is a market very much under the grasp of capitalism and is in fact running the way it should. The products are presented and the CUSTOMERS, not the companies, not the EU, not the US, not governments, and principalities, but the CUSTOMERS have the say in what is good and what isn’t. What customers want they have been getting, tabbed browsing, the ability to add plugins, dynamic bookmarks, RSS feed browsing, etc. The customers show they want these features by, oh my gosh, telling the companies and backing that up by market share.

There is no antitrust going on here, period.

Microsoft was found guilty of antitrust… of course they were, the panel wouldn’t even assemble for an appeal. Microsoft was guilty before the first gavel fell. So Microsoft has to either remove IE from their product or bundle their competitors.

A browser is a fundamental part of computers. How can you download competitors browsers without one? The corollary, how does a company justify bundling the competition with their product?

Lets put this in more real terms. You buy a car. It has a steering wheel. You could go to the local auto store to buy a steering wheel if you like, perhaps you want one with more cushion, go for it. Buy that steering wheel. But without a steering wheel you can’t take the car you bought to get that steering wheel from the auto parts store.

The car, and rightly so, comes bundled with a steering wheel. Would you expect Ford or Honda or Austin Martin or Mercedes to have 10 steering wheels in the trunk so you can pick and choose which ones you want? Don’t be absurd. Or maybe 20 shift knobs, or 100 hubcaps, etc. And yet there are more than one thousand companies who make a living off of custom car accessories.

EU, I have found your new target. Sue the pants off of every car company for antitrust against the custom car accessory industry!

Yahoo and Microsoft Again

It has been trying to avoid this issue for quite sometime. Although the impact of the two collaborating on search will affect the Web development and Web hosting world , it seems to me that there are quite a few pundits and journalists out the who have already covered this at length.

However, I think some of them are looking only at the service of the deal and not at the some of the additional benefits to Microsoft or Yahoo (especially Yahoo since their stocks plummeted).

Wall street was very disappointed with the deal since Yahoo doesn’t get any cash up front, but I think it should be known that Yahoo didn’t loose anything therefore didn’t really sell anything therefore not getting a paycheck at the beginning is inconsequential. What they received was a partnership with Microsoft. Microsoft will outsource their search engine and advertising technology to Yahoo. Microsoft gains additional traffic, Yahoo can free up resources for use elsewhere.

A bigger audience doesn’t just mean that Microsoft and Yahoo will gain money through advertising, what it also means is that Microsoft can garner valuable research and can even use Yahoo (or perhaps Bing since Bing will have the smaller audience) as a test bed for developing new search features. Realistically, Microsoft and Yahoo know that this deal won’t unseat Google as the number 1 search engine juggernaut, but what it does do is give both companies the ability to become more competitive down the road.

Yahoo, for instance, can take the money they were using before for search engine R&D and move it into developing tools, APIs, platforms for their user base, etc. Or, they could use that money to research a better search engine without being under the gun to release new updates to the public. 10 years down the road when the partnership ends Yahoo would then have a search engine platform with 10 years of R&D in it. They could also simply pocket the money, save on the expense to increase their profits.

This is not some scheme to try to get number 1 in search engines quick. This is a long term strategy for mutual improvement of two companies in hopes of the eventually unseating of Google as the king of search engines.

Tools That You Need:

1. Resource Hacker

2. Custom Start Menu icons (images). It mush be of the size 54×162 with a .bmp extension. which looks something as follows

1. Take the ownership of the file “explorer.exe“ which is located in the Windows Folder (Most likely in C:\Windows).

2. Open the Resource Hacker Tool.

3. Go to File menu and click on Open. Now load the file “explorer.exe” into the Resource Hacker.

4. Expand Bitmap branch in the left pane.

5. Now expand 6801 option, right-click on 1033 and select Replace Resource option.

6. A new window appears. Click on Open file with new bitmap button.

7. Navigate to the customized (.bmp) image, open it and click on Replace button.

8. Repeat steps 4 to 7 above for the options 6805 and 6809 as well.

9. Now click on Save option (File->Save). Resource Hacker will automatically create a backup file called explorer_original.exe so that you can restore it in the future if needed.

10. Log Off and Log On to see the changes in effect.

NOTE: If you are running 64-bit edition of Windows 7, then you need to use Resource Hacker version 3.5.2 beta which is 64-bit compatible. It is available from the same link provided above.

How to Make Invisible Password Protected Folder

Do you want to password protect your folder? Do you want to make it invisible so that it remains unnoticed by the normal users? Well here is a way to do that. In this post I will show you how to make a password protected folder in Windows without using any additional software. Here is is step by step procedure to create a password protected folder.

How to create a Password Protected Folder?

Step-1: Create a new folder (Right-click -> New -> Folder) and give it any name of your choice. For instance I name it as ABC.

Step-2: Now in this folder place all the important files, documents or any folders that you want to password protect.

Step-3: Now Right-click on this folder (ABC) and select the option Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder.

Step-4: Now a new compressed zipped folder gets created next this folder (ABC) with the same name.

Step-5: Double-click on this compressed zipped folder and you should see your original folder (ABC) here.

Step-6: Now goto the File menu and select the option Add a password.

ie: File -> Add a password

Now a small window will pop up and here you can set your desired password. Once the password is set, the folder will ask for the password every time it is opened. Thus you have now created the password protected folder.

How to make it Invisible?

Step-1: Now Right-click on this password protected folder and select Properties.

Step-2: At the bottom select the option Hidden and press OK. Now your folder gets invisible (hidden).

Step-3: In order to unhide this folder go to My Computer – >Tools -> Folder options. Switch to View tab, scroll down and under Hidden files and folders you’ll see the following two options

* Do not show hidden files and folders

* Show hidden files and folders

Now select the second option and press OK. Now the invisible folder becomes visible in it’s location. To access it you need the password. To make it invisible again repeat step -1 through step-3 and select the first option and click OK. Now the folder becomes invisible once again.

Hacking Yahoo Messenger

This tutorial will tell you how to hack yahoo messenger while you are engaged in chatting with some person. While you are chatting through yahoo messenger, Yahoo will hide the IP addresses of all the computers that are connected through the yahoo messenger application to the chat room. So it is not possible to directly find out the IP of the person you want to hack. Then how to get the IP address? Yes it is still possible to hack the IP address during the Yahoo messenger chat. The procedure to Hack Yahoo messenger is discussed in detail below.

While you are chatting via yahoo messenger the communication between you and the person you want to hack, takes place indirectly via Yahoo server and not directly. It is not possible to hack Yahoo messenger directly to get the IP address. So to hack his IP, you must establish a direct communication with him. So ,how to do this? It’s easy. Just start chatting with some one via Yahoo messenger. During the process of chatting send him a big file. Now the file transfer takes place directly between your computer and the victim’s computer(via yahoo messenger application). So now, you are ready to go. Here’s the step-by-step process to hack Yahoo messenger and get the IP address of the person .

* Goto the COMMAND PROMPT (START>>>RUN>>>Type CMD).

* Here Type “netstat -n” (without quotes).

NOTE: If you are new to “netstat” and other IP related commands refer this tutorial: Windows XP IP Utilities

* The pic given below shows netstat results of my computer. I was not chatting when i took this pic and hence it looks modified.

* Here local address is your own IP and the foreign address is the IP address of the recipient with whom you are connected via yahoo messenger (There may be multiple recipients and hence multiple foreign addresses).

* Now send him the file.

* Check the output by typing the command “netstat -n” (without quotes).

* Assume the output is something like this.

TCP 127.0.0.10:5101 124.55.23.11:1246 ESTABLISHED

Here 124.55.23.11 is the IP address of the person with whom you are chatting and 1246 is the port number where connection is established. That’s It! You have now hacked Yahoo messenger to get his IP address.

Once you hack Yahoo messenger and get his IP address you can use any of the Remote Administration tools or perform NETBIOS HACKING.

NOTE: Some times there are chances where in the file transfer gets encrypted (takes place via yahoo server itself). So in this case the above hack may fail to work.
