Headphone Commute Review
Guilherme Boratto is a Brazilian producer used to laying out minimal tech house twelve inchers for prominent German labels like Plastic City, Harthouse, and of course Kompakt's offshoots K2, Kompakt Pop and Kompakt Extra. Hailing from São Paulo, Gui was approached to contribute a remix to the City of God soundtrack. Chromophobia is a light and refreshing take on over-used building blocks of the style. Familiar beats, simple melodies, and straight to the point approach remind me of the feeling I experienced when I first heard Benny Benassi (before he exploded all over the charts). Listening to the album, a smile creeps upon my lips, being happy for the fact that techno continues to survive and evolve in an over-saturated scene. A unique and memorable sound.

Album Description
Parent-label Elektrolux has already given pop music both modern and sensually-melancholic influences through artists such as Aural Float and Fous De La Mar. Now via their imprint Mikrolux, an Icelandic band of five called Worm Is Green, continues this aesthetic brilliance. Worm Is Green was originally founded as bedroom elektronica project by Arni Teitur Asgeirsson. Meanwhile, it has become a band of five, also featuring Bjarni Thor Hannesson (sampler and synthesizer), Thorsteinn Hannesson (drums), Vilberg Hafsteinn Jonsson (bass) and Gudridur Ringsted (vocals). Their debut album Automagic was released on Thule in 2003 and published once again on the US label Arena Rock in 2004. Push Play is a perfect blend of British New Wave, the 4AD-sound of the Cocteau Twins and essential Portishead-like Trip-Hop. The result: dazzling and elegant pop jewels which, however, do not deny their intense contemporary ambient influences. Like icing on a cake, the second disc in this set is a Worm is Green comprehensive remix anthology. All remixes (except one by the Estonian producer Kaido Kirikmae) have been made by Icelandic musicians. "We have asked all our favorite producers for remixes, and most of them agreed right away. This was just great and a considerable honor since we have not worked together with the entire elite of the Icelandic electronic music scene", says Arni. Offbeat breaks, cool electro beats, and minimal house all build up to an exciting finish to another epic Mikrolux masterpiece!

Album Description
Chronicles of the Urban Dwellers is the follow-up to ADJD's debut album Quarter of a Century, released in 2000. For everyone that cannot resist a driving bassline, this new album provides all of their "Poker Flat style" productions that made them one of the hottest acts to follow in 2001. ADJD's trademark sound is building dark and subliminally sexy house atmospheres. The two Stockholm/New York-based producers (aka Alexi Delano and Jesper Dahlbäck) got to know each other while selling records to scenesters back in the 90s and got their gear together only a few years ago. Under difficult circumstances, the two strove together even as Alexi moved to New York. Nevertheless, they found enough time to get together for some explosive studio sessions that culminate in heavy house workouts that ooze sex and mystery. Wonderfully strange
Cristian Vogel has transcended the label of techno with this one. Certainly more experimental than the majority of what's hit the market from Tresor, Buscas Invisibles runs the gamut from banging tracks to more unusual, slower material. Either way, it all makes use of the fat, analogue sounds which generally characterize his work. Vogel is one to keep an eye on as his music continually improves.

Every listening you find something new ...
Around 1996 I get chance to listen this album on after party event. It is absolutely amazing. I am keen on techno/acid/hardcore so minimal techno is not my blood. Anyway THIS IS GREAT PIECE OF MUSIC. Long tracks, amazing "highs" (claps, close/open HH, snares) are the most perfectionist sound I ever heard. Till 2004 i never owned original because it was hard to get one. So finally at 2006 I get my own original. I am glad to have it. Compose/dramatic part of all tracks is perfect. The mid/high rhythms with the layers of extra sounds/loops envelopes is made near to perfection. Bass part is shielding the middles creating attention point. There are no "kickin'beats" just the supporting beats, subsounds. A lot of my friends does not understand my "asteroidmania" till they got chance to listen, after they are amazed as me. And after i reveal the year of production and they fall back and sit with pulled eyes out. :))) I think this is really good music, go for it. cheers -vh-

Alka "Deployed" Album Review

Satisfies your minimal techno thirst!
This is an incredible find. Alka is the unsung hero of minimal techno, or they've just not had enough distribution/exposure since 2002 for this album to 'take off' yet, as the airplane-laden cover may suggest. At any rate, Alka's "Deployed" CD is rich in variety, yet strong in cohesiveness at the same time. For starters, the ambient atmosphere is deep, cold, and aquatic. Percussion-wise, some tight Autechre-like loops or sounds pulse in, but for the most part, it's the numbing techno kick-snare combo that is more prevalent. Acts like Porter Ricks or Fluxion are the closest I would compare in its entirety.Is Alka original and strong enough to stand on their own? Absolutely. If you can actually get this CD even if it is back-ordered, do so! This is one of those albums that could be played from beginning to end in one evening and satisfy your techno cravings. Again, it is minimal, but it is also masterful.

Rob Dougan is Australia's answer to Moby...
...although he doesn't possess Moby's smoother, mellower voice, his style can only be described as that particular brand of "esoteric" rock (for lack of a better term).

I first heard the "Clubbed to Death" track while watching a Google video about the New World Order (the song was used as the background music for the video) and after reading the comments I found out whose music it was. After listening to "Furious Angels" and watching some of his music videos (which are pretty awesome) I became hooked on Rob's music. This 2CD set is a must-have!

Perfect blending of Industrial and Techno/Electronica/Etc.
Not 100% Industrial, and definitely not 100% Techno, this is an amazing recording. I have always loved NIN, early Front 242, Ministry, some Skinny Puppy, and a bit of Front Line Assembly, but THIS work takes the cake... amazing... I remember buying this when it was first released and expecting the same old Front 242 attack... wow, was I surprised.... female vocals for starters, but also a new sense of continuity and VERY cool synth/sample work... it will ALWAYS be one of my required listening CD's... Highlight: GenEcide... just listen to it.

The Future Sound of London "Dead Cities" Album Review

Good stuff...
For those with a narrow musical mind, (i.e. the 'top 40' variety) this would be an unbearable CD to have to sit through, but for those with more open musical tastes, particularly in the lineage of ambient, acid techno , then this CD is for you. The soundscapes and musical textures on this masterpiece are eerie, haunting, beautiful, intricate, complex and dark. Hats off to Dougans and Cobain , the musical geniuses behind this production. I particularly enjoy the track 'Glass'. But the songs as a whole fit perfectly together and mesh well. For those looking for something similar, try Tangerine Dream's 'Ricochet'. This is the only album I can compare it to in terms of eerie, haunting, beautiful, intricate , complex and dark. And TG did it back in the 70's...live! Even the album cover , like Dead Cities, is ominous. Good stuff.....

Suburban Knight "My Sol Dark Direction" Album Review

DO NOT doubt its greatness!
This is great Detroit stuff! I had a lot of trouble deciding whether or not to purchase this release though. You see, a few months ago I had purchased K. Hand's "Detroit History Part 1," a tribute to the 1st Detroit Electronic Music Festival in 2000. After having been introduced to her through "Come On Now Baby," her contribution to the Astralwerks "Beyond the Third Wave" compilation, and from buying a couple of her spectacular 12"s, I was overjoyed to pick it up. Sadly I found it to be quite mediocre in what I expected of her. Instead of the minimal funkiness of her soulful Detroit house sound, it became too overly minimal with very little or absolutely no melodic development. Most tracks were just one-bar loops repeating over and over with very little deviation. Anyway, this isn't a review about K. Hand's album, it's about Suburban Knight. What I am saying is that this release is NOT a mindless, minimal four-on-the-floor record, it's a beautiful piece of Detroit's signature sound. You shouldn't feel doubtful like I did about it, even despite the lack of sound samples (they weren't even on the Peacefrog label site). Melancholy synth strings, syncopated tech hi-hats, and that cold stark sound, but still enough melody to keep you happy. I haven't purchased a great Detroit techno album like this one in a while. Many of the new Detroit-based artists don't sound anything like the originators of the sound. Suburban Knight is not a new artist, but he still does it my favorite way. Hopefully he can pass off the torch.

Video Tokyo=future brain

From the weekend in Tokyo. The candid shots from inside the subway are part of the reason I nearly missed my returning flight. Music is "Oldschool, Baby" by Westbam and Nena, which is on Michael Mayer's Fabric 13 mix. We saw Westbam at Womb -- hence the shots of the inside lights (taken from my cell phone).

Hooligan "Hear You Now" Album Review

Where's a hooligan when you need one?
I caught wind of this track on a compilation CD a few years back, and though I've searched quite a bit, it seems DJ Hooligan doesn't do much in the realm of publishing (Though his name's all over bootleg tracks from the lounges and dance floors). The female vocals, though heavily synthed, are sweet and draw you in. These are complimented by the wide array of instruments that were chosen and used quite well (heavy in the piano\stringed instrument sounds with effects). All-in-all, I'd recommend this one, since the CD's dirt cheap you're pretty much paying for shipping to get a solid set of mixes on a great song.

(10.27.06) Prepare yourself for one of the smoothest techno records ever made. If you liked Claro Intelecto's Neurofibro, then you must know that Merciless is even more slick and classic.

The analog bass of "Florence" recalls LFO of the early 90's, only rarefied and softened by piano tones. No matter how fast the tempo is, the crystalline perfection of the beats and the stripped out acid tones make this album perfect for home listening, sipping a Martini on the couch. With this laid back setting you will also fully appreciate the dramatic coupling between eerie strings and minimal melodies of unheard moving beauty. This feature is more evident in a couple of bubbling dub tracks, "Choke" and "Blocked," whose deadly slowness reveals immense spaces reverberating with sound. Beyond this relaxing attitude, there's no doubt some of these tunes will cause havoc on any floor, like "Come To Me" that has a tremendous pulsating bassline, or "Boutique," whose slapped bass injects a funky party vibe just before the epic ending. After the aforementioned "Blocked," comes the reinterpretation of Claro Intelecto's "Peace Of Mind," reduced to bare atmospheres and tapped piano keys to create a terrific emotional farewell.

There are absolutely no excuses to pass on this one, such a quality record must not be missed, you'll be amazed by its sheer perfection.

Underworld "Beaucoup Fish" Album Review

Middle of the Pack
Ahhh Underworld. You either love them or you hate them. Never really heard anyone say that "they're O.K.". Well, however people feel about Underworld, they are one of the biggest influences and contributors to the world of electronica. Their unique sound and track production has been a re-mix gold mine for world class British DJ's aplenty.

However, all great musical groups tend to fade as the years go by. For myself, Beaucoup Fish was the beginning for Underworld. Not a terrible album, but definitely not up to the caliber of their previous works. Although "Shudder/King Of Snake" is argueably the most infamous track on this album, my vote goes to "Kittens" as Beaucoup Fish's stunner.

Too many dud tracks dragged down my overall rating for this album. "Bruce Lee" is terrible. The last three tracks are not much better. I was disappointed with this effort despite buying it the week it was released (which by the way is 1998 and not 1999 as Amazon states). Eventhough two years elapsed since their last ablum, Beaucoup Fish always sounded rushed to me.

essential new electronic listening
Rechenzentrum was a new name to me when I stumbled upon their reconstruction of Kid 606 (on the PS You Love Me remix release). After hearing a 12" release on the Shitkatapult imprint, I picked up both the self-titled and Peel Session CD releases together.Hands down the John Peel Session is one of the most rewarding, versatile recordings of the year. Rechenzentrum have taken the glitch to new levels, sculpting it into impeccably crafted soundtracks. In this instance, they've included the use of more traditional chamber instruments such as violin, cello and piano on select tracks, almost completely dodging the conventions of minimal techno or any of its trendy trappings.Don't let the title fool you, as this is far longer than the average Peel Session EP (40+ minutes)... and its duration is perfect for the variety of sounds within. Also, as a bonus, there is a Quicktime video included as an enhanced CD element to the disc.

Jonah "Yeah Right" Album Review

"Yeah Right" is so Wrong!
I was very disappointed in this tune by Jonah. The lyrics and the beat are EXTREMELY repetitive. I believe that if you are going to have lyrics in a song, at least have more than just two words. The remixes really don't help it much, unfortunately. I would highly recommend buying "Ssst...Listen" instead because you get a good variety of beats & breaks, and better lyrics. "Yeah Right" is a terrible follow-up to it. Don't waste your cash! If my review was helpful to you, then don't forget to vote. THANKS!

nothing wrong with it, but nothing memorable either
The problem with this record is not that there's anything wrong with it but that it's derivative. Patterson seems to be filling in the gaps of territory that he's already mapped. Now, it's still impressive territory, but there's just nothing here that wasn't done earlier, and more spectacularly. And in the end there's nothing to hold onto in the same way as earlier records had. So if you've been to Orb land and loved it you'll like this record. If you're less familiar with the band, this isn't the place to start. And if you like Orb and respect them and already have Orblivion and Ultraworld (as I do, for instance) then this is probably an unnecessary release that will sound just fine the first two times you play it and then it will disappear into your record collection, never to be remembered again.

Ricardo Villalobos "Salvador" Album Review

Great, early bangers from Villalobos
Over the course of the past eight years or so, Ricardo Villalobos has managed to churn out such a steady and solid body of work that one could argue that he's one of only a small handfull of true, new superstar names in the field of dance music (along with Michael Mayer and a couple others). In terms of minimal dance music, he almost stands alone, refining the genre with small variations, clean lines, and a great sense of just how to escalate a track.

Salvador is a collection of his earliest work on Frisbee, bringing together seven tracks from between 1998 and 2001, most of which have been out of print for some time now. Filling out the collection (literally, as the release runs almost eighty minutes in total length) is his whopping fifteen-minute reworking of Senor Coconut's "Electrolatino." The disc opens with one of his classic tracks turned on its head as Villalobos takes "Que Belle Epoque" and gives it a modern update, stretching it out into even more of a beast, taking the 70s sample that the song builds on it and tugging and pulling and mining it until it's woven through the entire song.

Those expecting his early work to have the same emotional oomph may find themselves just a slight bit disappointed overall with the release, as it seems that he hasn't quite harnessed his full powers yet on the disc. "Tempura" thumps along for over ten minutes and features a couple killer builds, but doesn't have the melodic grab that much of his newer work does, but the watery "Suesse Cheques" released at the same time proves him unafraid to experiment with different techniques, hollowing out the kick and leaving the track largely floating through the clouds.

The two tracks that will probably crack the most skulls are "Logohitz" and "Lugom-ix," a slamming one-two punch that progress like avalanches falling down the side of a mountain, ripping out string stabs, mutated vocal samples, and hypnotic bass that keep things tumbling forward in a relentless way. The aforementioned Senor Coconut remix closes out the disc, and while it's not one of the better tracks, it's a nice comedown and a fun inclusion. Even Salvador collects his work just before he hit his prime, the release shows that Villalobos has always been a musician and producer to reckon with.

Antipop Consortium "Arrhythmia" Album Review

not Anti-pop, just Pop-trash
Antipop Consortium's Arrhythmia was very uninteresting and dark similar to Critical Madness' album, "Finding The Plot". Arrhythmia served as a poor man's Saul Williams struggling to find a particular zone or comfortability level to relate with alternative Hip-Hop fans. The production was fine despite having a dark, gloomy tone like you're having one of those bad nightmares. The interlude, "EKG", was an exception (although 30 seconds long) sounded like a product of the Dutch producer, Nicolay.

The track, "Mega", seemed a bit offensive reinforcing what this album is missing: a PURPOSE! I often contemplated on Anti-Pop Consortium's intentions for this album...is it really PROGRESSIVE Hip-Hop? "Silver Heat" was another pop-trash example that highlights my point. "Ghost Lawns" was raved by critics but sounded unattractively depressing, the same for "We Kill Soap Skum", "Z St.", "Traumm", and several others. I do not believe that this highly DISAPPOINTING album even applies as a Hip-Hop album; instead, it serves better as one of those barbaric/goth testiments for rebellious teenage white kids.

The few enjoyable tracks are listed: "Ping Pong" and "Conspiracy of Myth" stand out on a gloomy depressing album. Don't waste your money.

Limited Appeal
The marketing of this CD is very misleading - there aren't six sermons, there are two and a half. Two of the tracks are gospel songs, and the last track is a mixture of singing with just enough talking to consider it a half a sermon. The messages are dated and probably appealing to only a very small segment of the consumer market - unfortunately I am not part of that small segment.

a tapestry of subltle sonic elements
I have been listening to techno for over 20 years (since I lived in Detroit in the late 80's) and Richie Hawtin is still producing some of the best progressive music of the genre. The varied rhythms are layered with such delicate precision that I need a better sound system to truly appreciate all the nuances. A couple of the tracks had some silly "lyrics" that I felt marred an otherwise excellent mix by the Minimal Master.

detroit at its best
Like the Auto industry--labeled "Detroit" by American journalists--this was like the 1970's for G.M.. Mills style, at its best, was this album. Like another review, spin Alarms, Bells, or Paradise, and you will have a pleased audiance.

I find that some of the influence of this album made its way on a sonderweg and influenced the Tresor/Berlin movements; it can be heard in later artists that Mill's inspired.

Mill's sound, as it might be labeled "Detroit," is clean and simple. It's 4/4 at it's best; never polluted by stupid lyrics or anything that shouldn't be there. If you're looking for something to get your floor dancing, look no further than this album.

DISOREINTING PERCUSSIVE MINIMALIST TECHNO
This is definitely not an album for techno neophytes or fans of commercialized, diluted mainstream techno. If you're looking for a good first time Jeff Mills purchase, I would probably suggest "lifelike" or "the art of connecting". However, if you know what you're getting into, and if you're looking for some of the most uncompromising, hard detroit techno out there, this is definitely a must. Here, Mills weaves swarming, harsh percussive loops that progress and mutate through subtle sound layering. To the uninitiated, this will sound like the same loop is being played throughout the entire song. Only two of the tracks on this cd are what I would consider "accessible". Yes, this is very tribal, repetitive stuff. If you're looking for a warmer, more melodic sound, look somewhere else.

This is definitely one of my favorite trance albums to date. Songs like Power, Cokane, and We Will Survive never cease to bring a smile to my face - no matter what time or what place. With so many trance artists putting out dream-like trance and ambient trance, which is nice on occasions, this music is just in your face excellence. I would recommend it to any trance fan.

Jeff Mills follows the same path of his prior releases and releases another brilliant CD. Another calm and introspective CD, with a lot of weird strings and synths (just like we're used to). So... What's the difference between Lifelike and the other Jeff Mill's releases???Well, for starters, this CD has much better "track quallity" than the prior releases of the same kind. The Modernist "Explosion" Album Review

Music as soundtrack for living
99% of the music out there wants you to dance, or move, or feel. Some provide energy, others imagery, the more experimental of the lot require your complete attention. Then there are releases like Jorg Burger a.k.a. The Modernist, and his new album, jokingly titled Explosion. It offers a minimal but lively soundtrack for going about your daily routine: doing your chores, cleaning the house, or working in the office.Which is not to say the thirteen tracks here are bland. There's a good dose of melody and texture through the (mostly identical) songs, but The Modernist is just not interested in disrupting your business by offering catchy hooks. Try as you might, after any two songs you'll be moving your head but reaching for a magazine. Reviewing the tracks separately is futile, as they are slight variations of each other. All have repetitious, friendly beats, rely on deep keyboard loops, and a sprinkle of catchy sounds. "Header" has a nice crystalline layer on top, "Alphatier Brian" a darker bassline, and "Manson Soup" an acoustic guitar and crowd murmur- serving notice the disc's halfway through more than anything else. At thirteen songs the album goes long, but nothing here is disagreeable or makes you reach for the skip button.Oddly enough, most songs end abruptly; perhaps Burger realized than a continuous mix would blur out the already tenuous line of originality between them. He's content to offer a comforting layer of repetitious, minimal house music for busy listeners. Your tasks now completed a bit faster, you can pop in something else and have some fun.

Not what I was hoping for
I was mislead by a video of him spinning in a club. I had no idea that he used a lot of vocals in his music. I personally don't like vocals in Trance even if it has Acid mixed in. He also has a message he's trying to get across with his music and it's a message that doesn't appeal to me, so it's a little irritating because it's so strong in his music. I can kind of get into one song on the CD, so it wasn't a total loss.

Finally this CD gets a re-release.

Some really really nice moods and textures in these collection of more chill headphone tracks. This may be my most intimate, favorite swordsmen release, second to stay down.

Been looking on various sites for a long time to find this disc, and it's still very pricey as an import, but it's a really, really nice chunk of electronic tracks. Old, classic, beautiful.

After opening with the fine and mellow Abacus remix of Chaser's "Blue Planet" and the slinky groove of E.B.E.'s "Serenity," this CD launches into an hour of amazing and relentlessly pumping tracks. Loads of dance discs claim to keep the energy level at 10, but after its relatively easygoing opening, Soma 7 actually delivers. Once the Latin percussion on the Sidewinder remix of Universal Principles' "Flyin' High" kicks in, forget about it. All manner of rhythmic components carry the listener along in an elevated state of mind-body grace for the rest of the CD. A number of tracks manage to creatively tweak sonic effects for minutes on end; whooshes and synth licks get taken to the outer limits. The great beats and delicious array of unidentified sounds on this disc make for a special sort of ecstasy. --Fred Cisterna

Diego "Instant Reality" Album Review

Instant Reality
As sleek, lean and classy as a Calvin Klein runway model, Diego's Instant Reality is a sublime throwback to the halcyon days of Detroit techno. Though it didn't cause more than a ripple in electronica circles outside of the Motor City (and most of Diego's publicity was centered on his young age rather than the actual music he produced), it came as a breath of fresh, danceable air amid the claustrophobia of IDM and the anything-goes-ness of electronic post-rock. The world wasn't looking for another Derrick May or Richie Hawtin, per se, but Instant Reality was so good at what it did that it served as reminder of how vital and important Detroit electro had been in its prime.

There's nothing exactly new on Instant Reality, but so what? Diego invokes the music of his idols with a combination of focus, skill and palpable reverence in such a way that the album becomes a mini-course on the best the genre had to offer. There are notes of Drexciya and Paperclip People in "Mind Detergent" and "Thought Pattern Pt.2"--both confident, driving tracks with a menacing edge. "Lander" would be right at home on Carl Craig's Landcruising (perhaps not coincidentally, the former's name may be a tribute to the latter), just as "Widewalker" brings back teary-eyed memories of Kirk DeGiorgio's more listener-oriented work before he began dabbling in soul. And "Sacrament" is pure "Strings"-era Derrick May, wearing its flat, 80's-style keyboards and Detroit-cribbed chord progressions with pride.

Aside from "Sacrament," which may raise the eyebrows of those who aren't ardent fans of the genre, Instant Reality does an excellent job of staying away from bloated electro cheese, and that's a big key to its success. It's clear that Diego takes his role as enfant producer du jour incredibly seriously, heard not only in the album's range from ambient to beat-driven, but also in the meticulous placement of musical elements that almost borders on perfectionism. On "Me Fragments"--an undoubted standout in an album full of them--snares, kick drums and hi-hats come out of unexpected places as Diego throws them in and pulls them out almost before we can register their presence; it could have been so easy to pound out a beat and loop it on the old Cubase until the fadeout, but Diego must know as we do that it's no fun when the beats just sit there and do nothing. It's this artist's "Shades of Jae" without all of the black pride pretension and vocal whinnying.

It may be an overstatement to say that Instant Reality revived Detroit techno single-handedly. But if it didn't bring the entire genre back to life, it at least brought it back to relevance, which is to say that it affirmed it. Electronica is relatively "modernist" music (its seeds may have been sown by Steve Reich's tape music in the 1960's, but electronica as we know it didn't appear until the Paradise Garage days 10 years later), and too many producers fall into the trap of pushing themselves further and further into unknown territory. Diego, by contrast, isn't afraid to admit that Jeff Mills, Derrick May, Kenny Dixon Jr. and the whole lot of Detroit producers were geniuses and that inspiration comes as much from our forebears as it does from ourselves. With that reasoning and his prodigious skills in tow, Diego created a masterwork, one that measures up to and (in some cases) quietly eclipses the best work by Detroit's dancefloor royalty.

One good reason why summer 2005 will be remembered as being so cool is because that's when Cisco Ferreira released his album T.R.I.N.I.T.Y. on Tresor. One good reason why Cisco Ferreira is so cool is because he's the guy behind the pure, unmistakable Advent style Techno that headlines the roster of signature Tresor music. It was apparent in 2002 that Ferreira was sealing the brilliance of The Advent's sound sketches concept series and its rapid-fire, high-hat-spitting, pounding minimalism when he released Sketched For Life, his debut Tresor album, which thrashed open different doors to sonic areas now recognised in clubs around the world. Three years later in 2005, Ferreira signs his own name to his second full-length album on Tresor: T.R.I.N.I.T.Y. With tongue-in-cheek expertise, old-school touches are woven into future-wave; broader dance-floor dynamic, and even occasional vocals show up surprisingly yet effectively. The album opens texturally with the housy/electroid track "Electro 8.07FM" before pounding into "Pagodas" and the hypnotic vocals on "Paradise". "Kurva" and "S*D*4*2" pull in some cool club locomotion that carry you further into the album's complex temperament and character - exemplified on "Nepalm". Ferreira gives another glance at electro-motion on "Woman's Scent", which features some nasty vocals by Paris Da Black Fu. The Detroit Funker is also known as Detroit Grand Pubahs releasing on Steve Bug's Poker Flat label. The sheer soundscape of T.R.I.N.I.T.Y. commands a degree of admiration for Cisco Ferreira, and his knack for creating irresistible dance music - aural landscapes with a tough, growling beat.

Audion "Suckfish" Album Review

Wonderful Stuff!
A few years ago, I purchased "Leave Luck to Heaven" by Matthew Dear on the basis of a Rolling Stone review. It took a while to get used to Dear's very unorthodox music but I gradually learned to love the CD and I followed up by ordering "Backstroke," his follow-up CD. I enjoyed it too, but not quite as much as "Heaven." Recently, I wondered if this unusual and creative fellow had any new discs out. I put his name into the Amazon.com search, and I found Audion and the "Suckfish" CD. Matthew Dear in disguise, I guess. Anyway, it was certainly worth a listen and I purchased the disc.

Audion takes a while to get used to, and not everyone is going to like it. A friend, in fact, wonders how I could possibly listen to this type of unmitigated noise. She regards it as a musical jackhammer, with an emphasis on the hammer. Well, that's OK. I like it and like it a lot, but I had to learn to like it. Matthew Dear's earlier efforts had a light, playful, frolicking character. The Audion disc is heavier, darker, more intrusive and much more complex. The sonic range on this disc is quite remarkable. The lower sounds test my stereo system and the upper range tests my ears. Both come out fairly well, but I'd sure love to listen to this thing on a real good high-end stereo system at high volume. It would be awesome! One gripe I have is that Dear uses a lot of distortion, including voice distortions, and I prefer the cleaner, crisper sounds. OK, I can live with it. One blessing, is a general lack of vocals, quite unlike the other Matthew Dear discs.

The Audion CD has a Matthew Dear signature sound and method of composition. The music is quite different than that of Dear's earlier discs, but it is Mathew Dear music, without question. The first three tracks ("Vegetables," "Your Place of Mine," "T*tty F*ck") can only be described as brain numbing. Well, that's OK. It's like going to the dentist. One has to be "numbed up" before the serious work begins. And then follows such delights as "T. B." (featuring ultra-high sounds), "Wield," "Taut," "Rubber" and "Just F*ucking" (Where does Dear come up with such titles?). To me, the highlight of the album is "The Pong," a delightfully playful mélange of notes and rhythms. Wonderful stuff!

So what might I recommend? Well, this CD is not for the faint of heart. If you like complex electronica music, as I do, then you might find this CD a delight. But, don't give up easily. Give it a few listens and let it gradually settle in. It's worth the effort.

I loved the clips on Amazon! I am definitely going to buy this album as soon as possible. Angelina sounds great with NB Ridaz but amazing by herself. Whoever wants to diss her don't know good music when they hear it. And if you're judging her without hearing her music then you have no clue what you're talkin about and should at least listen to her music before judgin her.

Long before mainstream America started "Livin La Vida Loca" with the rise of Latin pop, Upstairs Records' recording artist Angelina was already burning up dance floors with bilingual dance tracks. As one of the leaders in the evolution of dance music, Angelina's debut album elevated bilingual dance music to an unprecedented level. After "Release Me," which skyrocketed to number 7 on Billboard's Monitor, Angelina's first album had an arsenal of hit follow up singles, including "I Don't Need Your Love," "Without Your Love" and "Tide is High." With continued presence on the music industries leading charts, including Billboard's Hot 100, Angelina was established as a proven artist in the music industry. Her songs dominated dance floors everywhere and many where so entranced by her sound that they began to refer to her as the "Latin Queen of Dance." The buzz on Angelina reached a fevered pitch as her first album led to her tour for three consecutive years throughout the United States and Canada (as well as internationally in Brazil, South East Asia and Mexico). Angelina's second album "Ven A Mi (Come To Me)," solidified her loyal fan base and increased her following. Two of the outstanding tracks on that album were "Every Time I Think Of You," produced by A.B. Quintanilla (brother of the late Selena), and "Bailando," which earned her a Latin Billboard nomination for "Best Dance Single," in the same category as Gloria Estefan and Enrique Iglesias. Radio stations and DJ's around the world have been anxiously awaiting something new from Angelina, and with her third album currently receiving its finishing touches, she is ready to step into the next level in the music arena. As an energetic, focused and talented performer, Angelina is sure to advance her third album to one of the year's hottest new dance albums. Coming from a humble family in Union City, CA, she is fiercely proud of her Latino heritage. She grew up with three brothers and one sister, and singing became her way shining. She also stood apart in her love for learning and academics, becoming the first person from both sides of her parents' families to attend a University. In order to afford the expenses of Santa Clara University, she worked at NUMMI during the summer, a car assembly plant in which she performed such tasks as installing car batteries and welding gas tanks. It was during her sophomore year, when she was considering taking time off from her double major of Psychology and Biology because money was becoming scarce, that she attended an open audition held by Upstairs Records. They were looking for a female vocalist to record the already written song "Release Me." Angelina's singing career took off at a record pace. Within two weeks of being chosen she signed a record deal, recorded her smash hit single "Release Me," and heard it on two of the largest radio stations in California, KYLD and KMEL. Though leaving school and concentrating on music would definitely have been an easier alternative, and most likely would have earned her a wider popularity, she was determined to graduate. Even with the sleepless nights spent studying, she always found time to reach out to others, volunteering at local high schools and speaking at motivational events (before her career took off she was Recruitment and Outreach Chair of M.E.Ch.A.). Beating the odds, she wanted to prove that with perseverance and determination a person with her modest background could achieve despite many people's doubt. As a graduate of Santa Clara University, Angelina's driving motivation in all facets of life is to be a positive role model, and she uses her passion for singing as a platform with which to inspire. Angelina quickly became a dance sensation internationally with her first two albums and relishes the challenge of living up to that standard with her third album. She is currently reintroducing herself to radio by being featured on hit hip-hop single "Runaway" with the NB Ridaz. The song is quickly climbing the charts as it is being played in heavy rotation all across the country. Having recently recorded the video for "Runaway," Angelina is eager to release the first single off of her third album. Filled with up-tempo dance tracks as well as beautiful ballads,such as "Forever" a remake of Anquette Song "I Will Always Be There For you". Mr. Clarke does it again... with 2 top notch techno and electo mixes!
If you're serious about Techno, you'll be into Dave Clarke. He is the master of the relentless storming Techno mixes. Yet he knows how to keep it Funky and avoid monotony or cheesiness in his mixes. This is an excellent follow on from his original and now classic World Service CD. Trance obsessed Americans could learn a lot from listening to Dave's brand of high quality of Techno and Electro.

Juan Atkins-Metroplex 1985 "2005" Album Review

Metroplex: gateway to an electronic dreamscape.
This is a solid compilation of metroplex releases with the characteristic feel of the label: in some ways cold, aloof, intellectualized electronica initially but as it becomes more familiar it gains a kind of intimate and in some ways sad emotionality which paradoxically then makes it warm and comforting. It is a compilation of great historic interest really as through Cybotron and Model 500 Juan Atkins is the originator of electronic music and alot of the music on this release has served as the backbone and template for most things that have come subsequently in the genre. You can clearly hear the Kraftwerk influences. This music has a substance and integrity which much more recent techno lacks. In many ways it represents creative (and non-commercial) experimentation with very limited predecesors. If you are not familiar with the genre or with early detroit techno in general you may find this release a little inaccesable. The only reason it doesn't get a 5 star rating from me (which it deserves in terms of the quality of the music) is that most of the material has been previously issued on other compilations. When you've been a fan of this type of music for over 15 years like I have the main ingredient you are looking for is a relic from the past that you are not familiar with to recreate the magic.

The Prodigy "Experience" Album Review

Hard driving and creative rave music
I was surprised to find a couple of very good songs by The Prodigy on an Urbal Beats Compilation. I immediately bought this double CD and it's one of my favorite rave CDs I own. This isn't the more industrial punk sounding stuff that they became famous for. This is the first album and an excellent remix CD. The music is energetic, brilliant and the only CD I'm aware of that they did before changing their style. They became famous for their hard style of music. This music is just as hard but with almost no vocals. Just hard charging energy. If your looking for their stuff that's more in the vein of Ministry or the Revolting Cocks, then you should buy anything by them except this album. If you are looking for some very good, very energetic, hard techno, this album will be one of your favorites.All the power and energy of DJ Irene but with a totally different style.

Jeff Mills "Metropolis" Album Review

The perfect marriage of sci-fi and techno
Mills' productions since the beginning of the 21st century have broken the boundaries of the limiting title "DJ," and have given rise to a respected, full-fledged electronic score composer. I never knew much of this legendary DJ from years before, yet he certainly is a talented artist worthy of the ranks of other great experimental musicians such as Danny Elfman. I only make that comparison because Elfman came from a rock band (Oingo Boingo) then hit Hollywood with film score compositions that have put him up in the blockbuster movie ranks along with other giants such as John Williams. Jeff Mills is the Elfman of techno. Leaving the dance clubs in their smoke, Mills has transformed his skills to a theatrical level of electronic music with stunning success.

"Metropolis"... whether you want to tie Mills' score to the original film or not doesn't matter. What we have on the surface are dreary, cold, and repetitive loops... yet deep inside are huge landscapes painted with Mills' imagination and craft. His use of electronic sounds is more lifelike and warm than you can imagine. It is the perfect marriage of sci-fi and techno. A robot becoming human is a classic sci-fi theme, and this composition demonstrates how metallic, synthetic sounds can indeed produce emotion and stimulate mental images and thoughts.

Mills' use of audible space is astounding; tight dry enveloped synth loops in the foreground, distant haunting pads in the back, and punchy hi-hats pierce through the middle. Then the synth loop begins to drift and echo, as another loop slowly creeps in to take its place. I even love the imperfections of the analog hisses and buzzing (quite possibly intentional) that add an extra edge to the works. Most chilling is track 9, "Transformation B (Rotwang's Revenge)"... as if a factory steel press is pulsing and grinding towards you, and the only order to the feared result is the reliable static beat and tech click tracks. "Metropolis" is dark (as it should be) yet playful at times as if there is a conflict between machines and humanity.

After subscribing to Mills' "Metropolis," I ventured further into his library of recent achievements (THREE AGES, THE ART OF CONNECTING, THE OTHER DAY, TIME MACHINE, PURPOSEMAKER, ACTUAL, CONTACT SPECIAL, and MEDIUM to name a few). All these releases share a similar approach; yet still have their own unique personalities. If you've heard any of the releases I've mentioned and have not picked up "Metropolis," wait no more, as this is my favorite release among all of them (next to THE OTHER DAY).

Just as any artist, there are those tracks here and there that I don't care for and I skip over (usually mellow ones without percussion, or transitional 'fillers' if you will), but the strengths by far justify the purchase.

Moby "Go remixes" Album Review

Hyped track on pointless album
I have never understood the fascination with this track, probably about my fifth favorite on the s/t album. Still, I can understand some club-headed obsessors who must have it for old times sake. However, one has to be rather frivolous even to consider buying THIS album. Don't let the "maxi"-ness of the single fool you. On the album "Rare: The Collected b-sides" there is an entire remix disc (about ten tracks, including every version on this album) included as a BONUS. Kill two birds--er um, no, Mr. Hall would not condone that--with one stone and buy the other, unless this has some particularly good cover art or something.

Daft Punk "Homework" Album Review

It has become a classic. Its thats great
I saw one review here which said something about how bad Homework is because of the elemetry beats and the repetivness. This person obvisouly has no idea about how dance music was in the earlier acid days. Violent and repitivive is what they where going for in this album. If you like more pop/easy listning type of music, their second album Discovery is probably more for you. I like all their albums but I must say homework is my favourite. Its all about the TR-909, TR-808 beats, old samplers and dirty basslines produced by vintage synths like the korg ms-20 and so on! -
