Denzel Washington’s message to Will Smith after he hit Chris Rock at the Oscars.

Thank you for keeping it sane, Denzel.

By now all of you readers will have read/seen Will Smith smacking Chris Rock in arguably the most televised event in the world. For making a joke about Jada Smith's loss of hair, which is a medical condition.

The internet is breaking with arguments and counter-arguments about the behavior of the people concerned. Some are defending Will for defending the honor of his wife, and others are calling him out for choosing such an imbecilic way to call out what was objectionable in Chris Rock's behavior.

And now, right now, some are saying it was all staged. Somehow (and it's proof if you needed any, of how shallow I am) the third option makes me the saddest. If this is staged, then we have hit so low as humans we can get oil now.

Let's look at how things happened.

Guy 1 cracks a bad joke. Guy 2 laughs along. Guy 2 then takes a sidelong glance at his wife, the target of Guy 1's bad joke. Guy 2's wife has not taken kindly to the bad joke. Guy 2 does a 180° turn on a dime, upends his smile to its opposite, and decides to muscularly defend his wife. So, Guy 2 walks all the way to and climbs the proscenium, where Guy 1, unsuspecting and in camaraderie with Guy 2's enjoyment of his bad joke, is going hurr hurr hurr. Guy 2, now all righteous and over-spilling testosterone, punches Guy 1 in the face. Then, he spins around and leaves. Defending wife's honor, done and dusted.

The (Hollywood!) audience is shell-shocked, reduced to silence at this violent interplay of machismo. The camera cuts to another well-known alpha male, Javier Bardem, who is grinning and clapping delightedly at two men who've made right proper idiots of themselves (as has he, Bardem, himself).

What among any of this is defensible?

Hello, all of you women (and men) drooling and fawning over Will Smith hitting Chris Rock over his ''joke'' on Jada, glorifying it as some sort of ''stand up for your partner'', please ask yourselves if a man cannot stop himself from using his fists in front of a million people when triggered or provoked, tomorrow if he is triggered or ''provoked'' in the middle of an argument with you or your kids, do you think he will be able to stop himself from using his fists behind closed doors? What is this patriarchal notion, reinforced even in his Oscar acceptance speech, that ''love will make you do crazy things'' and that a man is someone who protects his family at any cost? Couldn't Jada herself have stood up for herself? Why didn't she? Does a woman always need a man to protect/defend her? Did Will, in fact, take some perverse satisfaction from seeing his wife being made fun of, and only got up to hit Chris as some sort of damage control because he realized it would have been bad for his image as a ''perfect husband'' to be seen laughing at his wife's expense?

Why do women themselves not see toxic masculinity for what it is?

We teach even kindergartners to ''use your words, not your hands'', and get 3-year-old kids, whose brains are only just developing, to apologize to another kid if they hit them. But we clap and applaud when a grown man hits another? Why do we expect more impulse control from toddlers than from adult men? Why is it when a grown man hits another man, suddenly it is seen as being macho, ''oh he's standing up for his partner, awwww'' but when it's a toddler hitting another toddler, even though in that little kid's developing brain, there might still have been a good enough reason to do it, we use it as a learning moment and expect accountability from them?

What could he have done instead?

How about if he had snatched the mic from Chris Rock and made a powerful statement about how wrong it is to make fun of a person with a medical condition and school Chris Rock, speak up for mental health too, on a platform live-telecasted and watched by millions? Imagine what a moment that would have been if he had done that. Used the opportunity to sensitize the audience Millions of boys and men would have seen a newly evolved kind of masculinity. Not that of the caveman.

The only way we can eradicate domestic violence, murders, rapes, wars, and all kinds of abuse against women and children, for which men have been predominantly (not always, I assert) responsible throughout history, is if we as a society start showing zero tolerance for all violence, from men, women, everyone.

Use your words, not your hands.

What do the current narratives and communicative processes around that Oscar moment reveal beyond what is said? I have thought about it quite a bit, as you can imagine, even after posting the above.

I am fascinated and a little annoyed by the way alopecia is being framed in the wake of the Smith-Rock drama. Alopecia is a general term for hair loss. There are several different kinds of alopecia; some of which are related to medical treatments or health conditions. I don’t know the cause of Jada Pinkett Smith’s hair loss. But, heritable pattern baldness is the most common form of alopecia. Male pattern baldness is so common among men we don’t give it a second thought. It’s generally seen as an ordinary part of aging for men; one many consider an attractive feature rather than a bug. And, of course, jokes around male pattern baldness abound.

When female pattern baldness occurs, there’s a double standard for women. Impossibly narrow, sexiest, normative expectations of beauty make it into a more serious “condition” to be pitied rather than a normal part of growing older or just a normal part of being human and having hair for millions (if not billions) of humans. So that's another reason to get irritated.

The implication I find in much of the commentary around Pinkett Smith’s alopecia is that Chris Rock “deserved” to be slapped in the face for belittling someone who “suffers” (suffer has been used repeatedly to characterize Smith’s hair loss) from alopecia. A word that, again, is a general term that is hyper-medicalizing and mystifying what should be understood as an ordinary physical change in the course of life.

It seems to me that this slight of hand(perhaps carried out by a clever Hollywood publicist) is, in and of itself, a form of ableism; one that obscures toxic masculinity, glorification of violence, intolerance of even the most common forms of physical difference, and the interwoven workings of patriarchy and ableism more broadly.

Whatever the cause of Smith’s hair loss, whatever form of alopecia she may have, I think it is worth noting that the suffering that may come from alopecia stems from social structures, expectations, and norms; not from any medical or health condition.

I am not defending Rock’s lazy, bad joke or trying to self-righteously criticize Will Smith. I simply want to express my view that there needs to be a larger conversation about ableism, ageism, sexism alongside other important conversations about gender, race, fame, beauty, greed, power, representation, accountability etc, etc."

Kolar Gold Fields (K.G.F.) is a mining region in K.G.F. taluk (township), Kolar district, Karnataka, India. Operated by the Bharat Gold Mines Limited (BGML). It is estimated that gold has been mined there for over 2000 years, and whilst many people over the course of history tried their luck at finding gold, Kolar Gold Field’s modern success is generally attributed to the firm John Taylor & Sons, after John Taylor III took control of the mines in 1880 and established what was at one time the deepest and most productive gold mine in the world. The mines were run by the company up until 1956 when they were taken over by the Government of Mysore who employed John Taylor & Sons as mining consultants.

Our way lies toward a certain rock face half a mile distant, where a rich line of quartz has recently been struck.

At its peak KGF was home to 30000 mine workers and their families and was a multi ethnic community with experienced miners recruited from around the world, a large proportion of which were from Cornwall. When the mines opened the local people were reluctant to work there as it was extremely dangerous work, so workers migrated from Tamil Nadu and Tamil became a common language spoken by most people at KGF. There was a large Anglo-Indian population at KGF many of whom took on the roles of British workers after Indian Independence in 1947.

The laborer's who used to work in these mines live in poverty without any financial and health aid from the government. Residents live in shanties smaller than 100 square feet in over 400 colonies. The living conditions in those colonies are very poor as well as people don’t have access to proper toilet facilities and there are open drains in the colonies for wastewater which ends up triggering a host of communicable diseases. About 260,000 people still live in the Kolar Gold Fields.

The Kolar gold mines were nationalized in 1956, and provided a total of over 900 tones of gold. They were closed by the Indian government on 28 February 2001 for environmental and economic reasons; food, water and shelter were scarce, and production did not justify the investment because the rate of the gold was dropped on that year. but now it is said that Nearly two decades after the gold mines shut down in Kolar, the Union government has decided to revive the mining operations. the further updates have not been said yet.

Twitter's New Feature for IOS Apps - Users can make GIF'S

Many of us might have always at some point wanted to make a GIF from our IOS camera while using the Twitter app, luckily that came true. Twitter announced that now, we can do just that.

On composing a new tweet on iOS, click the camera button. Then, you have the option to choose between a photo, a video and an animated GIF. As we are aware the GIFs can't be long, it will be only few sec. but it’ll come in handy for some situations?

After you record your short GIF, you have the option to either play it front to back on loop, or you can make it play like an Instagram boomerang, playing forward, then reverse on loop. The world is your oyster, unless if you want to make a GIF that lasts longer than like two seconds.

After you make the GIF, automatically the saving are done to your camera roll as a GIF in your images folder as its not a video.

Twitters Some recent updates you may have missed includes posting clips from Spaces, a potential upcoming spin on Instagram’s “close friends” list. Twitter hasn’t indicated when this GIF feature might roll out for Android, but Twitter usually adds in new updates to Android users eventually. Google makes it easier to search emails in Gmail by adding filters

In February last year, Google introduced a new “Search Chips” feature in Gmail for G Suite (now Workspace) users. The feature provided users easier access to Gmail’s search filters by providing clickable suggestions underneath the search bar. A few months after adding the feature, Google rolled it out to Gmail for consumers. The company is now introducing a similar feature in Gmail for Android for Workspace users.
Unlike Search Chips, which appear when you type a keyword, the new search filters show under the search bar as soon as you tap on it. You can use them independently or post-search to filter emails and find exactly what you’re looking for. As you can see in the attached screenshot, the feature lets you narrow down emails by sender, recipient, date, attachment, etc. To filter your search results based on a specific category, you can just tap on the corresponding filter and make the appropriate selection from the drop-down list. However, it doesn’t offer all the advanced lookup capabilities that you get with Search Chips on Gmail for desktop.

The new search filters in Gmail for Android have already started rolling for Workspace users. But the feature is rolling out in a staged fashion, and it should reach your phone before the end of October if it hasn’t already. Google says that there’s no end-user setting for this feature, so it should appear automatically when it reaches your device. The feature will be available for all Google Workspace customers, along with G Suite Basic and Business customers. Currently, Google hasn’t revealed any plans to roll it out to Gmail for consumers. We’ll make sure to let you know as soon as that happens.

RMS Titanic – at the time, the world’s largest man-made moving object at 269 metres in length and widely considered to be ‘unsinkable’ – struck an iceberg at 11.40pm on 14 April 1912. Despite several warnings, Titanic was racing through dangerous waters almost at its top speed of 23 knots. The berg was spotted only 30 seconds before impact, thanks in part to the fact that lookouts were not equipped with binoculars.

The iceberg caused a crack of over 200ft along Titanic’s starboard side. The size of the rupture meant five of the forward compartments flooded, with the ship’s design allowing for four to flood safely. It is widely believed that if the collision was head on, Titanic would have survived.

It took just two-and-a-half hours for the colossal vessel to sink, sending survivors into the freezing waters. Overall, the maritime disaster claimed over 1,500 lives. There were 705 survivors. Here, we bring you a guide to the history of the doomed vessel…

Where was Titanic built?

Titanic was built at Queen’s Island, once the heart of Belfast’s shipbuilding industry. The establishment of the Harland & Wolff shipyard in 1861 had turned Belfast into one of the world’s great shipbuilding centres. More than 1,700 vessels were built at the shipyard’s Queen’s Island site, including RMS Titanic.

“Titanic was the second of three Olympic-class ships designed and built for the White Star Line between 1908 and 1914″, Aidan McMichael, chairman of the Belfast Titanic Society, told BBC History Magazine. “Around 3,000 people worked on the construction of the ship – about 20 per cent of Harland & Wolff’s workforce – and the vessel was designed here, in Belfast, in drawing offices that still survive today, overlooking the slipways.

“Most of the workers hailed from east Belfast and there would have been vast swathes of people walking to and from the shipyard every day. Titanic, and its sister ship Olympic, which was built at roughly the same time, would have been iconic sights on the skyline.”

The first of the three ships to launch was Olympic, on 20 October 1910. As the largest ocean liner in the world, its launch attracted huge local and international interest. Less than a year later, on 31 May 1911, Titanic slid down slipway number three, and into the waters of the Victoria Channel in Belfast Lough. After launch Titanic was moved to the nearby Thompson wharf, where the majority of the fitting-out was completed in preparation for its maiden voyage in April 1912.

“Ship launches in Belfast were greeted with much excitement,” says McMichael. “As the first of the three ships, and as a new class of vessel, Olympic was launched to great fanfare, as was Titanic. Around 100,000 people – about a third of the city’s population – turned out to watch Titanic’s 62-second descent into the water, with tickets sold to raise money for charity.”

The fitting-out process took just under a year, and on 2 April 1912, with its paint barely dry, Titanic left Belfast Lough and set sail for Southampton to pick up its first passengers.

After leaving Southampton for New York on 10 April 1912, the liner called first at Cherbourg, France, and then Queenstown in Ireland, before travelling across the north Atlantic to America. “Many Irish families saw America as their chance to escape economic deprivation and poverty,” says Bartlett. “In fact, between 1848 and 1950, more than six million emigrated from IrelanD

Entertainment on Titanic included a newspaper and a band

Titanic had its own newspaper, The Atlantic Daily Bulletin. Printed every day, it included news, stock prices and horseracing results, as well as the day’s menu.

The vessel also had a band which entertained first-class passengers throughout the voyage, having memorised all 350 songs from The White Star Line Songbook. Famously, as the ship was sinking, the band continued to play for two hours to calm people down.

On the evening of 14 April 1912, hours before the iceberg collision, Titanic‘s first-class passengers sat down for their last meal aboard the ship – and for some, the last meal of their lives. As menus have been salvaged from the wreck, we know that it was a good one.

The final meal is better described as a feast. Oysters, filet mignon, poached salmon, chicken Lyonnaise, foie gras and roasted pigeon were some of the delicacies, each served with a different wine. For dessert, one option was Punch Romaine, citrus sorbet drenched in rum and champagne. With all meals as extravagant as this, the kitchen staff of 113 cooks, 15 first cooks, 12 pastry chefs, five sous chefs, six bakers and five butchers were kept busy.

No second-class menus from that night have been found, but we know that breakfast included grilled ox kidneys and Yarmouth bloaters (herring). Those holding the cheapest tickets tended to have a hearty lunch of stew and something light in the evening.

How many lifeboats were on board Titanic? And why were so few on board rescued?

Originally designed for 64 lifeboats, Titanic only had 20 – not enough for the 2,200 passengers and crew on board. Many of the launched boats were not filled to capacity, with one carrying 24 people, even though it could fit 65. A lifeboat drill was planned for the day it hit the iceberg, but it was cancelled.

The mighty ocean liner set sail with too few lifeboats to hold everyone on board, a decision based on the assumption that – in the unlikely event she ran into trouble – other ships would come to the rescue. They didn’t, but why?

There were two reasons. First, a miners’ strike caused a shortage of high-grade steam coal in Britain, which meant that far fewer ships than usual were at sea in the North Atlantic.

Under normal circumstances the Titanic might have expected to be in sight of two or three ships at all times – but those ships were simply not there. The second reason was that not all ships had radios, and those that did have them did not man their radios 24 hours a day.

At least two ships, the SS Californian and SS Parisian, could have reached Titanic in time to rescue everyone on board had they received the distress call – but the radio sets on both ships were switched off that night.

How many died during the Titanic disaster?

The disaster claimed over 1,500 lives. With the Atlantic Ocean’s temperature below zero, many people died within minutes of entering the water.

The ship’s baker, Charles Joughin, however, survived for two hours, claiming he could not feel the cold as he was blind-drunk on whisky. Alongside the 705 survivors were two of the nine dogs brought aboard: a Pekinese and a Pomeranian.

Why did the SS Californian not respond to Titanic’s distress calls

As RMS Titanic sank in the early hours of 15 April 1912, a ship that could have saved hundreds of lives was only a few miles away, yet deaf to distress calls. The SS Californian had stopped for the night due to the risk of icebergs. Actually, its radio operator Cyril Evans had sent out warnings a few hours earlie before going to bed.

Back on land, Lord made his case worse by giving conflicting reports to newspapers and the official inquiries. He claimed the Californian was 20-30 nautical miles from Titanic, when it was a lot closer. No charges were brought against him, but his career was in ruins. The captain of the Carpathia, meanwhile, was hailed a hero.

HISTORY BEHIND THE WORLDS FIRST CAMERA

The camera’s history can be traced back to the Middle Ages with the first pinhole camera. A physicist by the name of Alhazen discovered the idea of Camera Obscura, which led him to the creation of the first pinhole camera. Camera Obscura, in short, is reproducing an image with color and perspective preserved.

In 1816, inventor Nicéphore Niépce began to experiment with photography, although at the time he called it heliography. Niépce used light to create an almost photographic image of nature from his office window. He experimented with different materials to print the image on, including bitumen and pewter. The process began by Niépce placing an engraving onto the material of his choice. He would then expose it to light which would react to different chemicals that were coated on the plate, this would then create an image. The process took around eight hours and would fade away depending on the material used. However, this image could be considered the first photographic image.

The History of the Camera

In 1839, Louis Daguerre, the former partner of Niépce, created a practical photographic process with a daguerreotype. This process consisted of Daguerre taking a silver plated sheet that was made of copper and coated with silver iodide.

Then, in 1885, George Eastman began to produce and manufacture paper film. Later Eastman created the Kodak camera, which was similar the one pictured above. The box consisted of a fixed focus lens and one single shutter speed. The camera was equipped with enough film for 100 pictures and required Kodak to process the photographs and reload the film at the end of each roll. These cameras were priced surprisingly low and this invention was the beginning mass marketed photography.

In 1913 Oskar Barnack began to research the possibility of inventing a smaller camera that anyone could use. The Leica camera began to be commercialized after World War 1, and they eventually developed second model called the Leica 1. Many of the camera manufacturers at the time followed this example and began to produce more compact cameras to sell to the public. Over the years, cameras began to shrink in size and become more sophisticated. In 1948, Polaroid came out with an unconventional camera for the time, which is commonly known as the first instant-picture camera. By the 1960’s, Polaroid cameras were considered the most popular cameras at the time.

Gene editing (also called Genome editing) is a group of technologies in which scientists have ability to change an organism's DNA. These technologies allow genetic material to be added, removed, or altered at particular locations in the gene.

“As a kid, I spent my summers with my grandparents on their ranch in Texas. I helped fix windmills, vaccinate cattle, and do other chores. We also watched soap operas every afternoon, especially “Days of our Lives.” My grandparents belonged to a Caravan Club, a group of Airstream trailer owners who travel together around the U.S. and Canada. And every few summers, we’d join the caravan. We’d hitch up the Airstream trailer to my grandfather’s car, and off we’d go, in a line with 300 other Airstream adventurers. I loved and worshipped my grandparents and I really looked forward to these trips. On one particular trip, I was about 10 years old. I was rolling around in the big bench seat in the back of the car. My grandfather was driving. And my grandmother had the passenger seat. She smoked throughout these trips, and I hated the smell.

At that age, I’d take any excuse to make estimates and do minor arithmetic. I’d calculate our gas mileage — figure out useless statistics on things like grocery spending. I’d been hearing an ad campaign about smoking. I can’t remember the details, but basically the ad said, every puff of a cigarette takes some number of minutes off of your life: I think it might have been two minutes per puff. At any rate, I decided to do the math for my grandmother. I estimated the number of cigarettes per days, estimated the number of puffs per cigarette and so on. When I was satisfied that I’d come up with a reasonable number, I poked my head into the front of the car, tapped my grandmother on the shoulder, and proudly proclaimed, “At two minutes per puff, you’ve taken nine years off your life!”

I have a vivid memory of what happened, and it was not what I expected. I expected to be applauded for my cleverness and arithmetic skills. “Jeff, you’re so smart. You had to have made some tricky estimates, figure out the number of minutes in a year and do some division.” That’s not what happened. Instead, my grandmother burst into tears. I sat in the backseat and did not know what to do. While my grandmother sat crying, my grandfather, who had been driving in silence, pulled over onto the shoulder of the highway. He got out of the car and came around and opened my door and waited for me to follow. Was I in trouble? My grandfather was a highly intelligent, quiet man. He had never said a harsh word to me, and maybe this was to be the first time? Or maybe he would ask that I get back in the car and apologize to my grandmother. I had no experience in this realm with my grandparents and no way to gauge what the consequences might be. We stopped beside the trailer. My grandfather looked at me, and after a bit of silence, he gently and calmly said, “Jeff, one day you’ll understand that it’s harder to be kind than clever.”

What I want to talk to you about today is the difference between gifts and choices. Cleverness is a gift, kindness is a choice. Gifts are easy — they’re given after all. Choices can be hard. You can seduce yourself with your gifts if you’re not careful, and if you do, it’ll probably be to the detriment of your choices.

This is a group with many gifts. I’m sure one of your gifts is the gift of a smart and capable brain. I’m confident that’s the case because admission is competitive and if there weren’t some signs that you’re clever, the dean of admission wouldn’t have let you in.

Your smarts will come in handy because you will travel in a land of marvels. We humans — plodding as we are — will astonish ourselves. We’ll invent ways to generate clean energy and a lot of it. I got the idea to start Amazon 16 years ago. I came across the fact that Web usage was growing at 2,300 percent per year. I’d never seen or heard of anything that grew that fast, and the idea of building an online bookstore with millions of titles — something that simply couldn’t exist in the physical world — was very exciting to me. I had just turned 30 years old, and I’d been married for a year. I told my wife MacKenzie that I wanted to quit my job and go do this crazy thing that probably wouldn’t work since most startups don’t, and I wasn’t sure what would happen after that. MacKenzie (also a Princeton grad and sitting here in the second row) told me I should go for it. As a young boy, I’d been a garage inventor. FRIDGE USING BIOPOLYMER GEL TO KEEP COOL

It is time to reform the refrigerator as we know it in order to create a design that better addresses some of its problems encountered within the kitchen or the interior space at large, namely spatial issues, noise pollution, food waste and environmental sustainability.

In the age of “best by” dates, we tend not to think of it this way, but food, in fact, begins to decompose the second it is picked from the plant or killed. Times of plenty (with large prey and harvests) necessitated methods for preserving food through unlucky hunts or harvests, and our ancestors, wherever they were, developed a range of methods for dealing with food decomposition, including drying, freezing, fermenting, pickling, curing and canning.

Each of these methods brought with it other health and economic challenges. Properly done, they are generally labor- and time-intensive and require large amounts of salt and/or sugar to preserve the food. Improperly done, poorly preserved foods can kill both slowly, in remote areas where food surpluses and healthcare are hard to come by, and quickly, through food poisoning.

FOOD PRESERVATION

Refrigerator temperatures do not destroy spoilage microorganisms. Instead, they slow the growth of the microorganisms already in the food. The usage of air space within the fridge may sometimes provide uneven cooling areas within the appliance. Products stored closely, and on top of each other prevents cooling airs to circulate evenly. Along with the obstruction of visibility due to overcrowding of the fridge, many food products go to waste as we forget what we store inside the compartments, or behind other food items.

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

Over the past years, refrigerators have become a lot more efficient in terms of energy usage. In 1990, a refrigerator (without icemaker) used 1100 kWh whereas in 2010 it went down to 500 kWh. Energy usage has dropped by half over the course of the past 20 years. This is a major achievement in energy efficiency, however, considering the rising global temperatures and climate change it is not good enough. In today’s homes, the refrigerator is still the biggest energy consumer (13.7%) after the air-conditioner (14.1%). In addition, today’s refrigerator requires leftover food to be wrapped and often times people use non environmentally friendly plastic containers or WRAP

Each year, the Swedish home appliance manufacturer Electrolux organizes a design competition. In 2010, the theme revolved around designing household appliances for the urban home of 2050. Russian student Yuriy Dmitriev came up with a very futuristic idea and proposed the “Bio Robot Refrigerator”, which uses a “biopolymer gel through luminescence” to keep the food cold.

Artificial cooling, outside of burying food in ice, was developed in the early 1800’s, and became ubiquitous in the home only in the early 1900’s. As the technology developed further and home cooling systems for food preservation (what we term refrigeration) became more popular and more affordable, the systems became larger and larger, coming to include both separate freezing elements, as well as different internal compartments to control for ideal temperature and humidity levels. Today, in the developed world and much of the developing world, we could not conceive of a home without at least some small refrigeration element for preserving food.

Although the modern refrigerator provides many solutions for food preservation problems of the past, there are many obstacles refrigerator innovators have yet to overcome. As communities’ needs and demands develop with the progression of social awareness, the need for a new way of cooled food storage becomes more in demand.

SPACE

The kitchen space has always been a space of function and quick usage. Unless you are the owner of a large abode, it is common to see a kitchen stuffed into a small corner in the floor plan. The result is a small kitchen that must house a large modular fridge- that of which will consume at least 10% of the overall kitchen space. When looking into the structure of the actual product, one will realize too large of the portion of the fridge is dedicated to the inner mechanics such as the motor, fan and compartmental spacing. The actual space usage allocated to food storage could be maximized as the inner mechanics sizes minimized. Especially in the endlessly growing populations of New York City, where apartment sizing is a constant struggling issue, one may appreciate a fridge that did not pose such a threat on spatial surface area.

NOISE

Most refrigerators emit a continuous humming noise as a result of the working compressor which circulates the coolant around the vicinity of the appliance. Although noiseless fridges do not exist yet, modern appliance companies have found ways to diminish the noise pollution of fridges by inserting a more silent and stable coolant. As an appliance that is constantly running, constant clicking and groaning noises emitted from your fridge can be extremely annoying. The reason may not only be the coolant or the compressor working, but can often be the result of panels inside the appliances contracting or expanding to the changes of temperature. Long terms of constant exposure to noise pollution can cause stress levels and sleeping disorders to rise, especially living in an area where contribution is from many different factors.

FOOD PRESERVATION

ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY

So-called colonies of “biomechanical robots” would essentially transform “invisible infrared radiation into visible light”. This process is called “luminescence”. The cooling essentially happens by absorbing heat energy and radiating it in a different range of wavelengths. This cooling process results in the emission of a lime-green-colored, odorless, non-sticky gel that morphs around each item placed into the refrigerator, creating separate pods and identifying the optimal cooling and storage temperature for each item. In addition, the gel protects from ultraviolet radiation that can damage the food.

The fridge is also designed in a way that it could be mounted either vertically or horizontally on the wall, or even the ceiling when in zero gravity. This design feature would be a great solution for space issues inside a growing urban environment with smaller apartments.

From a food waste perspective, the fact that your food is visible at all times helps you be more aware of what you have inside your fridge and what needs to be consumed before it starts rotting away inside.

When it comes to noise pollution, this fridge does not require any motor and thus eliminates the humming noises that current fridges produce and that can keep you from a good night’s’ sleep.

From a design perspective, one may debate whether the lime-green color of the gel would really be aesthetically pleasing to look at all day inside a home. There could be more appropriate color choice options. It could also trigger a positive change in product marketing and push for the development of more decorative and sustainable product packaging development in the future.

As of now, this refrigerator merely exists as a design prototype (watch video clips) and needs research and development. From the existing information, it is not yet fully clear how energy sustainable this fridge really is and also how food leftovers (especially meat) can be appropriately stored inside the gel without using any packaging and making sure it is antibacterial and sanitary. Despite the couple shortcomings such as the questionable lime-green color or the unresolved energy efficiency question, this design prototype offers a design solution that starts addressing some of the current problems encountered in the modern urban kitchen environment.

Concentrated Solar Power (CSP)- What Is It?- How Does It Work?

Concentrated solar power (CSP) systems generate solar power by using mirrors or lenses to concentrate a large area of sunlight onto a receiver. Electricity is generated when the concentrated light is converted to solar thermal energy, which drives a steam turbine connected to an electrical power generator or powers a thermochemical reaction.

CSP had a global total installed capacity of 5,500 MW in 2018. Spain accounted for almost half of the world's capacity, at 2,300 MW. The US follows with 1,740 MW. The global market was initially dominated by parabolic-trough plants, which accounted for 90% of CSP plants at one point. Since about 2010, central power tower CSP has been favored in new plants due to its higher temperature operation (up to 565 C) than trough (up to 400 C), which promises greater efficiency.

The DEWA project in Dubai, under construction in 2019, held the world record for lowest CSP price in 2017 at $73 per MWh for its 700 MW combined trough and tower project with 15 hours of thermal energy storage daily.

Concentrating technologies exist in four optical types, namely parabolic trough, dish, concentrating linear Fresnel reflector, and solar power tower.

Future

A study done by Greenpeace International, the European Solar Thermal Electricity Association, and the International Energy Agency's SolarPACES group investigated the potential and future of concentrated solar power. The study found that concentrated solar power could account for up to 25% of the world's energy needs by 2050.

Suitable sites

The locations with highest direct radiance are dry, at high altitude, and located in the tropics. These locations have a higher potential for CSP than areas with less sun.

New Ways to Reach Users with App Clips and Widgets

Debuting alongside macOS Catalina at WWDC 2019, Mac Catalyst made it easy for developers to bring their iPad apps to the Mac. With macOS Big Sur, Mac Catalyst apps automatically inherit the spacious new design, while giving developers powerful new APIs and greater control over the behavior of their apps. And now developers can choose to keep their Mac app scaled at a resolution to match their iPad app, or take total control of their Mac interface to create a truly custom Mac experience. Developers can distribute their Mac Catalyst apps to customers in 175 countries on the Mac App Store, and let customers easily enjoy apps and in-app purchases across Mac, iPhone, and iPad with universal purchase.

Other Developer Features

ARKit 4 introduces new ways to capture information about the real world using a new Depth API that is designed to work with the LiDAR sensor in iPad Pro, enabling entirely new types of apps, such as on-site architecture, design, landscaping, and manufacturing.

Machine learning development is easier and more extensive with additional tools in Core ML for model deployment and encryption, new templates and training capabilities in Create ML, and more APIs for vision and natural language.

PencilKit now features Scribble, which makes it easy to create apps with text entry fields that users can write in with Apple Pencil. Developers will also have access to stroke data using PencilKit, all while seamlessly handling both Apple Pencil input and system touch gestures.

52 China Apps Banned in India fake News Found!

3 days ago, a growing news channel claimed that Indian intelligence agency and security agencies have found serious security breach in popular Chinese apps like Tik Tok, Helo, UC News and there use was a threat for the country.

According to the intelligence agencies, these Chinese apps end up extracting a large amount of data from Indian users and keep it stored on servers outside the country, a leading daily reported.

A message on WhatsApp also claimed that the Uttar Pradesh STF has advised all its officers and employees to not use Chinese Apps.

In a widely circulated message, the Uttar Pradesh STF also listed 52 Chinese Apps that were dubious and posed a threat to national security and users proivacy.

However, there was another claim attributed to the Government of India regarding the Chinese Apps. Some reports and messages on social media claimed that India's National Information Center had warned or asked Google Play Store and Apple Store to restrict/ban a list of Chinese Apps as they compromised the 'sovereignty of the country'. The viral message claimed that the GOI has used its power under the IT Act and asked Google Play Store and Apple Store to restrict the use of Chinese apps with immediate effect.

The claim was widely circulated and credence in the anti-China sentiment prevalent in the country due to the Galwan Standoff.

ALTERNATIVE APPS:

1. ROPOSO (Alternative to TikTok / Likee / Kwai)

Among the many issues with TikTok, privacy has been a major concern for many users. Just recently, four US senators urged the FTC to investigate TikTok because it apparently failed to take down videos made by children under the age of 13 — a violation of their 2019 agreement. Besides, the advocacy group alleged that TikTok failed to protect the privacy of minors. Apart from that, many users are suspicious of apps that are based out of China because of obvious privacy reasons. TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance– a Beijing-based company — has been accused of sharing user data with China.

2. Google Chrome – (Alternative for UC Browser and CM Browser)

UC Browser, owned by Alibaba Group of China, is the second most popular browser across India and China, but it has had many security and privacy controversies in the past few years. In 2015, Citizen Lab published a detailed study that underlined glaring security vulnerabilities and privacy gaps within the app. The report concluded that personally identifiable information of users where sent to Umeng, an Alibaba analytics tool without any encryption.

3. ShareChat – Helo Alternative

Helo is another Chinese app that has had a huge success in the Indian market. It’s a social media platform for discovering viral content and sharing them with friends and communities. The catch behind Helo’s success is its highly curated content for regional audiences. The app offers its service in more than 14 Indian languages and it’s currently one of the top-ranking apps on the Play Store.

4. Files by Google (Alternative to SHAREit, Xender)

ShareIt started as a file transfer application, but now it has pivoted to a content platform just like Helo and ShareChat. As a result, the app has moved from its primary goal and now mostly caters to content creators. In my brief usage, I found many inappropriate contents on its app and I would really not recommend it for anything, let alone file transfer.

5. Adobe Scan – CamScanner Alternative

CamScanner is s popular document scanner app and it’s run by INTSIG, a Chinese company based in Shanghai. Last year, it was removed from the Play Store after Kaspersky found a Trojan Horse module inside the CamScanner app. The researchers said that “Trojan downloader can download malicious modules depending on what its creators are up to at the moment”.

6. ProtonVPN – TurboVPN Alternative

TurboVPN is a free VPN app that has quickly garnered wide popularity because of no speed restriction and no data limit. It’s run by a company named Innovative Connecting which is based out of Singapore. However, if you look closely, the company has deep roots with China, as revealed by Security Affairs. On top of that, the privacy policy of TurboVPN is sketchy at best and I would not really trust it.

7. KineMaster – VivaVideo Alternative

VivaVideo is a popular app for editing videos on your smartphone. But you should not be using it if you value your privacy. In a recent article published on VPN Pro’s blog, it considered VivaVideo and other apps from the same company as Chinese spyware. The app asks too many permissions that a video editing app doesn’t require.

8. Google News – (Alternative for UC News and NewsDog)

Both UC News and NewsDog are one of the most popular news apps in India. But they also feature in the list of 52 apps released by Indian Intelligence agencies. Thankfully, there are many great news apps that you can use to replace these apps. My favorite is the Google News app. Not only it gets you the latest news, but it also shows you multiple sources for the same story so you can form your own opinion.

morning, Class of 2019!

Thank you, President Tessier-Lavigne, for that generous introduction. I’ll do my best to earn it.

Before I begin, I want to recognize everyone whose hard work made this celebration possible, including the groundskeepers, ushers, volunteers and crew. Thank you.

I’m honored and frankly a little astonished to be invited to join you for this most meaningful of occasions.

Graduates, this is your day. But you didn’t get here alone.

Family and friends, teachers, mentors, loved ones, and, of course, your parents, all worked together to make you possible and they share your joy today. Here on Father’s Day, let’s give the dads in particular a round of applause.

Stanford is near to my heart, not least because I live just a mile and a half from here.

Of course, if my accent hasn’t given it away, for the first part of my life I had to admire this place from a distance.

I went to school on the other side of the country, at Auburn University, in the heart of landlocked Eastern Alabama.

You may not know this, but I was on the sailing team all four years.

It wasn’t easy. Back then, the closest marina was a three-hour drive away. For practice, most of the time we had to wait for a heavy rainstorm to flood the football field. And tying knots is hard! Who knew?

Yet somehow, against all odds, we managed to beat Stanford every time. We must have gotten lucky with the wind.

Kidding aside, I know the real reason I’m here, and I don’t take it lightly.

Stanford and Silicon Valley’s roots are woven together. We’re part of the same ecosystem. It was true when Steve stood on this stage 14 years ago, it’s true today, and, presumably, it’ll be true for a while longer still.

The past few decades have lifted us together. But today we gather at a moment that demands some reflection.

Fueled by caffeine and code, optimism and idealism, conviction and creativity, generations of Stanford graduates (and dropouts) have used technology to remake our society.

But I think you would agree that, lately, the results haven’t been neat or straightforward.

In just the four years that you’ve been here at the Farm, things feel like they have taken a sharp turn.

Crisis has tempered optimism. Consequences have challenged idealism. And reality has shaken blind faith.

And yet we are all still drawn here.

For good reason.

Big dreams live here, as do the genius and passion to make them real. In an age of cynicism, this place still believes that the human capacity to solve problems is boundless.

But so, it seems, is our potential to create them.

That’s what I’m interested in talking about today. Because if I’ve learned one thing, it’s that technology doesn’t change who we are, it magnifies who we are, the good and the bad.

Our problems – in technology, in politics, wherever – are human problems. From the Garden of Eden to today, it’s our humanity that got us into this mess, and it’s our humanity that’s going to have to get us out.

If you want credit for the good, take responsibility for the bad

First things first, here’s a plain fact.

Silicon Valley is responsible for some of the most revolutionary inventions in modern history.

From the first oscillator built in the Hewlett-Packard garage to the iPhones that I know you’re holding in your hands.

Social media, shareable video, snaps and stories that connect half the people on Earth. They all trace their roots to Stanford’s backyard.

But lately, it seems, this industry is becoming better known for a less noble innovation: the belief that you can claim credit without accepting responsibility.

We see it every day now, with every data breach, every privacy violation, every blind eye turned to hate speech. Fake news poisoning our national conversation. The false promise of miracles in exchange for a single drop of your blood. Too many seem to think that good intentions excuse away harmful outcomes.

But whether you like it or not, what you build and what you create define who you are.

It feels a bit crazy that anyone should have to say this. But if you’ve built a chaos factory, you can’t dodge responsibility for the chaos. Taking responsibility means having the courage to think things through.

And there are few areas where this is more important than privacy.

If we accept as normal and unavoidable that everything in our lives can be aggregated, sold, or even leaked in the event of a hack, then we lose so much more than data.

We lose the freedom to be human.

Think about what’s at stake. Everything you write, everything you say, every topic of curiosity, every stray thought, every impulsive purchase, every moment of frustration or weakness, every gripe or complaint, every secret shared in confidence.

In a world without digital privacy, even if you have done nothing wrong other than think differently, you begin to censor yourself. Not entirely at first. Just a little, bit by bit. To risk less, to hope less, to imagine less, to dare less, to create less, to try less, to talk less, to think less. The chilling effect of digital surveillance is profound, and it touches everything.

What a small, unimaginative world we would end up with. Not entirely at first. Just a little, bit by bit. Ironically, it’s the kind of environment that would have stopped Silicon Valley before it had even gotten started.

We deserve better. You deserve better.

If we believe that freedom means an environment where great ideas can take root, where they can grow and be nurtured without fear of irrational restrictions or burdens, then it’s our duty to change course, because your generation ought to have the same freedom to shape the future as the generation that came before.

Graduates, at the very least, learn from these mistakes. If you want to take credit, first learn to take responsibility.

Be a builder

Now, a lot of you – the vast majority – won’t find yourselves in tech at all. That’s as it should be. We need your minds at work far and wide, because our challenges are great, and they can’t be solved by any single industry.

No matter where you go, no matter what you do, I know you will be ambitious. You wouldn’t be here today if you weren’t. Match that ambition with humility – a humility of purpose.

That doesn’t mean being tamer, being smaller, being less in what you do. It’s the opposite, it’s about serving something greater. The author Madeleine L’Engle wrote, “Humility is throwing oneself away in complete concentration on something or someone else.”

In other words, whatever you do with your life, be a builder.

You don’t have to start from scratch to build something monumental. And, conversely, the best founders – the ones whose creations last and whose reputations grow rather than shrink with passing time – they spend most of their time building, piece by piece.

Builders are comfortable in the belief that their life’s work will one day be bigger than them – bigger than any one person. They’re mindful that its effects will span generations. That’s not an accident. In a way, it’s the whole point.

In a few days we will mark the 50th anniversary of the riots at Stonewall.

When the patrons of the Stonewall Inn showed up that night – people of all races, gay and transgender, young and old – they had no idea what history had in store for them. It would have seemed foolish to dream it.

When the door was busted open by police, it was not the knock of opportunity or the call of destiny. It was just another instance of the world telling them that they ought to feel worthless for being different.

But the group gathered there felt something strengthen in them. A conviction that they deserved something better than the shadows, and better than oblivion.

And if it wasn’t going to be given, then they were going to have to build it themselves.

I was 8 years old and a thousand miles away when Stonewall happened. There were no news alerts, no way for photos to go viral, no mechanism for a kid on the Gulf Coast to hear these unlikely heroes tell their stories.

Greenwich Village may as well have been a different planet, though I can tell you that the slurs and hatreds were the same.

What I would not know, for a long time, was what I owed to a group of people I never knew in a place I’d never been.

Yet I will never stop being grateful for what they had the courage to build.

Graduates, being a builder is about believing that you cannot possibly be the greatest cause on this Earth, because you aren’t built to last. It’s about making peace with the fact that you won’t be there for the end of the story.

You won’t be ready

That brings me to my last bit of advice.

Fourteen years ago, Steve stood on this stage and told your predecessors: “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life.”

Here’s my corollary: “Your mentors may leave you prepared, but they can’t leave you ready.”

When Steve got sick, I had hardwired my thinking to the belief that he would get better. I not only thought he would hold on, I was convinced, down to my core, that he’d still be guiding Apple long after I, myself, was gone.

Then, one day, he called me over to his house and told me that it wasn’t going to be that way.

Even then, I was convinced he would stay on as chairman. That he’d step back from the day to day but always be there as a sounding board.

But there was no reason to believe that. I never should have thought it. The facts were all there.

And when he was gone, truly gone, I learned the real, visceral difference between preparation and readiness.

It was the loneliest I’ve ever felt in my life. By an order of magnitude. It was one of those moments where you can be surrounded by people, yet you don’t really see, hear or even feel them. But I could sense their expectations.

When the dust settled, all I knew was that I was going to have to be the best version of myself that I could be.

I knew that if you got out of bed every morning and set your watch by what other people expect or demand, it’ll drive you crazy.

So what was true then is true now. Don’t waste your time living someone else’s life. Don’t try to emulate the people who came before you to the exclusion of everything else, contorting into a shape that doesn’t fit.

It takes too much mental effort – effort that should be dedicated to creating and building. You’ll waste precious time trying to rewire your every thought, and, in the mean time, you won’t be fooling anybody.

Graduates, the fact is, when your time comes, and it will, you’ll never be ready.

But you’re not supposed to be. Find the hope in the unexpected. Find the courage in the challenge. Find your vision on the solitary road.

Don’t get distracted.

There are too many people who want credit without responsibility.

Too many who show up for the ribbon cutting without building anything worth a damn.

Be different. Leave something worthy.

And always remember that you can’t take it with you. You’re going to have to pass it on.
