Apple has officially unveiled the three new iPhones alongside the new Apple Watch Series 4. The Apple iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max came as the successors to last year’s iPhone X. Also, there is a cheaper iPhone X alternative with an LCD display and a single camera called iPhone XR. All three new iPhones are powered by the 7nm Apple A12 Bionic chip. While the Apple iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max will hit the markets later this month, the iPhone XR will be available from next month.

#Oppo R17

Just when you think the Oppo couldn't get more creative in the smartphone department, out comes the R17 Pro. While the Oppo Find X had a massive 93.8 percent screen-to-body ratio and a retractable camera module, the Oppo R17 Pro comes with a waterdrop-notch, a triple-camera system, Super VOOC charging capabilities and an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The phone has been announced only in China for the time being, for a price of CNY 4,299 which translates to about Rs 42,000. However, we might not want to keep our hopes up for an India launch as Oppo rarely launches an R-series phone in the country.

This is only the second phone featuring a triple camera system after the Huawei P20 Pro and also the second phone with Super VOOC after Oppo's very own Lamborghini edition Find X smartphone.

Let's talk hardware first. The R17 Pro has a 6.4-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a 91.5 percent screen-to-body ratio, thanks to the drop-like notch which was also seen on the F9 Pro. The display is protected by the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 6 which certainly makes the screen durable.

Under the hood, the R17 Pro is powered by a Snapdragon 710 SoC and has 8 GB of RAM along with 128 GB of internal storage. Android 8.1 Oreo is running on the phone out of the box with Oppo's own ColorOS 5.1 system overlay.

The camera on the R17 Pro is a spectacle on its own. Right of the bat, Oppo has included a system similar to Samsung Galaxy S9 and Note 9's variable aperture mechanism on the center camera present in the triple camera alignment. This camera has a 12 MP sensor and can switch between f/1.5-f/2.4 aperture.

The primary camera on the phone is a 2o MP sensor with fixed aperture while the third camera looks to be meant for 3D DOF depth sensor. Oppo hasn't revealed the pixel count on this third sensor but has said that it will assist with 3D photo capturing. On the front, we see the drop-like notch houses a 25 MP camera like the one we saw on the Oppo F9 Pro.

The entire setup is powered by a 3,700 mAh battery which supports SuperVOOC charging technology that will charge your phone from 0-40 percent in 10 minutes.

As if all this wasn't enough, the Oppo R17 Pro has also thrown in an in-display fingerprint reader on the device.

#Shortwave-#Google's #Podcast App

An experimental unit within Google has been quietly developing a new app for discovering and playing podcasts. Called Shortwave, the new app was revealed by a trademark filing embedded below, which describes it as “allow[ing] users to search, access, and play digital audio files, and to share links to audio files.”

Nothing in the trademark filing specifies the kind of audio being accessed, but a Google representative said the focus of the app was on spoken word content. There is little public information about the app, although Google has played with smart captioning, translation, and other AI-assisted features in previous podcast products.

Google launched its current Android podcasts app in June, nearly a month before the trademark was filed, including cross-device syncing and a deep integration with Google Assistant. It’s unclear how Shortwave would differ from that app, although it’s likely the two were developed in isolation.

#Gboard v7.5

The latest Gboard update landed a couple of days ago with "Minis" sticker packs, a feature developed originally for the Allo messenger. However, as the story often goes with Gboard, there's still more to be seen with a teardown. There are the first hints about clipboard integration and some kind of hotkey support for Chrome OS. Follow-ups are also here for a previously spotted floating keyboard and the morse code input introduced earlier this year.

The latest update includes a couple vague hints that some type of integration with the clipboard is in the works.

The "access point" in the name refers to the screen where the clipboard button will exist, it shares the same position with other features like the Text Editing tools and One-handed mode, and it can be rearranged to appear in the toolbar at the top. To go with the line of text (and a matching array entry, not included), there is also an icon which will look like this when the feature goes live.

Unfortunately, there's not much to look at in terms of functionality. I can only guess as to what we'll see, but I have a feeling this will be a fairly traditional clipboard manager with a history of recent clips that can be immediately pasted into the current text field.

Gboard + Chrome OS: Shortcut keys

Google announced that Gboard will be making its way to Chrome OS later this year. In fact, the anticipated timeline has this occurring next month. I can't say whether the original deadline is still intact, but it looks like one of the first new features may be sneaking in with this update.

A small batch of new lines was added that explains users can assign behaviors to a key combination – basically, creating keyboard shortcuts.

External hardware for Morse code

A new morse code input mode received a bit of attention during Google I/O in May, but besides adding a miniaturized version, there haven't been a lot of changes. However, Google is adding support for external switches to directly control the morse keyboard.

Filtering racy GIFs

It's a small detail, but Gboard now has an internal setting for a filter that will eliminate racy GIFs from search – it'll remove anything that might be inappropriate for younger users. I'm not sure if this will become a proper setting in Gboard, but it would be nice to have the same option to control GIF filtering as we have for blocking offensive words.

'Confidential Mode' Arrives For #Gmail #App

Google's big Gmail redesign was revealed this past April (with G Suite customers getting the first look). It became default for everyone starting in July. One of the key features, Confidential Mode, is now available for mobile devices, though not everyone is as confident in its ability to keep your data private.

Once you've turned on confidential mode for a specific email, you can set an expiration date and passcode so that you can restrict access to the email either in the web interface or via SMS. Recipients of these confidential emails won't be able to copy, paste, download, print or forward the message, and attachments will be disabled.

That doesn't stop anyone from taking a screenshot of your message, however. As Google notes, "Although confidential mode helps prevent the recipients from accidentally sharing your email, it doesn't prevent recipients from taking screenshots or photos of your messages or attachments. Recipients who have malicious programs on their computer may still be able to copy or download your messages or attachments. This feature isn't available for G Suite customers at this time."

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) digital privacy advocacy group thinks that this new mode isn't secure at all, and might even lend users a false sense of security. Confidential mode is not encrypted end-to-end, so Google could in fact read your messages in transit. In addition, the EFF points out that expiring messages do not, in fact, disappear from your Sent mail, which means they are retrievable. Also, if you use an SMS passcode, you might need to give Google your recipient's phone number (if the company doesn't already have it). That means that Google now has another bit of personal data — an email connected to a phone number.

#Android Messages v3.5

Both Google Phone and Google Contacts had Material redesigns earlier this month. As such, people began speculating that Android Messages would also soon be revamped, and now it's happened. On top of the redesign, version 3.5 of Android Messages also brings a long-awaited dark mode.

For whatever reason, Google replaced the '+' FAB with a larger one including a new icon and 'Start chat' text. The lighter blue matches what we've been seeing in the Phone and Contacts redesigns. You'll also notice that the times are now right-aligned, which makes things a bit easier to parse.

When you hit the new 'Start chat' button, you'll notice that the interface has only slightly been tweaked here. The blue fill for the top and the icon to the left of 'Start group conversation' has been removed, but aside from Product Sans being used for 'New conversation' and the capitalization of the 'Top contacts' text, things are mostly the same.
In conversations, the colors have been inverted. Whereas the messages of the recipient would previously be colored, your own messages will now always be a light blue. Annoyingly, your text will be a darker blue, which isn't great-looking in my opinion. Again, Product Sans is used. Custom colors for different conversations are gone, which many of you will surely be displeased with.

Dark mode is finally here. As you might expect, it makes everything dark - but not quite black. A toggle for it has been added to the three-dot menu on the top right, and it changes your message font from blue to black. #Mi A2 to Go on Sale Today

Xiaomi recently launched its second Android One smartphone, the Mi A2, in India and it will be going up for sale for the first time at 12PM today via Amazon.in, Mi.com, Mi Homes and Mi Preferred Partner Stores. Like its predecessor, the Mi A1, the Xiaomi Mi A2 also runs on the stock Android operating system and is a part of Google’s Android One program, meaning that it is bound to receive timely OS and security updates. The Mi A2 will be one of the first phones to receive the Android Pie update when it's rolled out later this year. The phone was announced in India last week, and was up for pre-orders till now.

#Android P to hit #Sony #Smartphones Soon

Android 9.0 Pie was announced this week and manufacturers have started releasing their update schedules. Sony appears to be pretty swift with the new version of the OS promising the OTA update as early as this September.

Sony said six of its phones will get the latest and greatest from Google. Here they are:

#Samsung Galaxy #Note 9 up for sale in #India

Samsung’s Galaxy Note9 was launched globally in New York yesterday. And now the South Korean titan has announced that it’ll be going on sale in India soon. Before that however, the brand has already started taking pre-orders for its latest flagship along with revealing its pricing info. The handset will retail in India with a starting price of Rs 67,900. Interested buyers can pre-book the smartphone between August 10th to August 21st by paying the entire sum and availing exciting launch offers as well. The top-end model on the other hand, will set you back by Rs 84,900. Key highlights of the handset include a big-screen display, powerful chipset, upgraded S Pen with Bluetooth connectivity, and a large battery.

As for the specifications, the Galaxy Note9 sports a 6.4-inch Super AMOLED Infinity display with 18.5:9 aspect ratio. In India, the phone will come powered by the Exynos 9810 SoC. #Google Contacts v3.0

If there's anything Android users want, it's more white UI elements. Oh, is that not what you meant with your repeated calls for a dark mode? Google thought you were being sarcastic. As such, it has launched another redesigned app with an all-white Material interface. Get ready for Contacts 3.0 to sear your retinas.

The app itself appears to have all the same menu options and settings. The difference here is that it adopts Google's new Material Design style. The blue top bar is gone, replaced with a white section that transitions seamlessly into the scrollable contact list. The navigation drawer is still there, but the icons are the new wireframe material style. See below for a peek at the old app.

This updated style has been colloquially known as Material 2.0, but Google still just calls it Material. The process of creating your own distinctive style is Material Theming. Developers are not tied to this all-white UI, but that's Google's approach. With the launch of Pie, we're seeing a lot more of this light UI style, and now the Contacts app fits in. The app will continue rolling out in the Play Store, but we've got the update on APK Mirror if you don't want to wait.

Volume levels of #Bluetooth Devices are visible now on #Android P

You pick up your phone, connect your Bluetooth speaker, blast the volume to maximum and start dancing around the house like no one is watching. A couple of hours later, you're headed out to walk the dog so you grab your Bluetooth earbuds, connect them to your phone and the music explodes in your ears at the same high level. This should not be the case. Every accessory you connect should retain its own volume setting so that you don't get deaf when you first connect a headphone or speaker. Until now, Android hasn't done this right but it looks like P will finally fix it for us.

"Implement Bluetooth device volume memory" has been approved and merged in the Android Gerrit, so it should roll with one of the upcoming Developer Previews. When it's live, Android will remember your last volume level for each Bluetooth device and use that. So if you blast music on your headphones but prefer calmer volumes on your speaker, or the other way around, the setting will be retained for each of the two, even if you switch back and forth between them. This is another addition to all the volume (including Bluetooth) improvements that Android P has already implemented.

Gesture Activation for #Google Assistant

The one-swipe convenience of the old Google Now was one of the most magical parts of using Android back in the day, and its devolution into the Feed was a reason of sadness for many, including myself. Although most of its features were still hidden away in the Google app, checking your calendar, package tracking, or flight status was no longer just a swipe away. Thankfully, Google pretty much brought it back last month in something it calls "visual snapshot" via the Assistant. And now Google is testing a new, more convenient way of accessing it with a swipe up on the Assistant overlay.

When the Assistant changes were first shown off back at I/O, they included this upward swipe to access the new daily summary page, but for the last couple weeks, you've had to access it via a button at the top right of the Assistant's overlay. This new tweak means it's all just a long-hold and a swipe away. It's still not as convenient as the old Google Now was, but it's an improvement.

So far, this new interface seems to be part of a server-side A/B test, as none of the recent stable or beta versions of the Google app have been able to trigger the new behavior on my devices, and our tipster is seeing it on an stable build that isn't the latest (v8.13.15.21). As always with these tests, YMMV. It may not hit a wider audience for months, if ever, or it could land for everyone tomorrow.

#Whatsapp limits forward #feature

WhatsApp is limiting how many people you can forward messages to after the feature was abused to spread false rumors in India that led to mob violence.

WhatsApp is capping message forwarding to 20 contacts at one time. Previously, you could bulk forward a message to over 250 contacts at once.

However, the conditions are even more strict in India; WhatsApp is capping the message forwarding to only five contacts, making it more of a hassle to circulate content to large groups. It's also axing the quick forward button next to messages containing media.

In India, WhatsApp has over 200 million users. But in recent months, the app was used to spread false rumors about child kidnappings, inciting angry mobs to kill two dozen innocent people since April, according to The New York Times. In some instances, the violence was sparked when video clips purporting to show the kidnappings went viral.

In response, the Indian government demanded that WhatsApp take action to stop the fake information from spreading over the messaging service.

WhatsApp said the new limits, for now, are only a test. "We believe that these changes—which we'll continue to evaluate—will help keep WhatsApp the way it was designed to be: a private messaging app," it said in a blog post on Thursday.

The change comes as Facebook, which owns WhatsApp, is trying to rein in the dark side of social media use. On Wednesday, the company told the press it was going to remove fake information on Facebook that could lead to physical violence, meaning it'll move beyond simply policing against hate speech and direct threats.

#Sirin Labs’ Finney

The first-ever blockchain smartphone will finally debut this November with the arrival of Sirin Labs’ Finney — a feature-packed Android smartphone that its creators hope will become the ultimate blueprint for the first generation of consumer-ready, blockchain-powered devices.

Announced last October and set to hit the market this November, the Finney is the brainchild of the team at Sirin Labs — the makers of the mega-expensive, ultra-secure Solarin smartphone. Fresh off an initial coin offering crowdsale (ICO) that drew in $157.8 million (well over its initial $100 million target), the Swiss firm is now finally ready to fully reveal its hand and show off the $999 Finney’s biggest secrets.

We’ve already seen the rise of phones with pop-up cameras with the Vivo Nex and the Oppo Find X, but with the Finney we have something else entirely: a slide-up second display powered by dedicated firmware that acts as a secure, cold storage wallet for cryptocurrency.

This so-called “Safe Screen,” which only activates when slid-up manually from the device, is layered with PIN protection and is capable of independently verifying Finney wallet transactions to safeguard users from malware and hackers diverting their tokens to fraudulent parties.

Aside from this multi-touch 2-inch OLED secondary display, Sirin Labs is promising that the Finney will rival other Android flagships within its price range both in terms of aesthetics, build quality, and raw power.

The front and rear of the phone is built from 3D Gorilla Glass (grade to be confirmed), with a matte black finish on the rear, and held together by a concave metal frame embedded with two side-firing speakers either side. There’s no room for a traditional 3.5mm headphone jack, however.

In a slight change from the concept we saw earlier this year, the display is now a 6-inch LCD, 18:9, Full HD+ panel (1080 x 2160 resolution) with a notched design and thin (but still noticeable) bezels.

On the rear, meanwhile, the Finney sports a 12MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture which sits on top of a fingerprint sensor (not in-display, as many, including ourselves, had previously speculated based on a prior spec sheet) in a similar shield-like style to that of the Solarin.

Under the hood, the Finney packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SoC backed by 6GB of RAM, 128GB of internal storage (expandable), and a 3,280mAh battery that Sirin Labs claims can be recharged to 50 percent in 30 minutes, or refilled to max in two hours.

#Instagram now with #Adaptive icons

Sometimes you want to get your hands on the latest build of an app because it's faster or has some important new feature. Other times, it's just because there's some nagging quirk of the app that's driving you up a wall. For example, Instagram's disinterest in adding an adaptive icon. Well, that's finally fixed the new alpha.

Being one of the most popular apps in the world. a lot of people have Instagram on their home screens. The icon always has that vaguely Samsung-y squircle shape, though. It sticks out like a sore thumb on devices that enforce circular icons by default. You also can't change it to one of the other supported shapes (I know you're all using teardrops).

So, the v55 alpha finally changes that. The Instagram app will blend in properly with your other icons. See above for an example of how glorious this will be. The world is forever changed, and you were here to see it. Grab the new build on APK Mirror if you want to get that adaptive icon in your life.

#Gboard for #IOS is now with #Morse Code

Google began beta testing Morse code support in Gboard for Android a couple of months ago, and now the feature is being improved while also making its way to iOS.

Google announced today that it's adding Morse code to Gboard for iOS, allowing users to communicate using a system with two buttons: a dot and a dash. Above these buttons you can see word suggestions, much like you see on a QWERTY keyboard.

As I mentioned before, Gboard for Android has had Morse code support for a couple of months now, but Google says that it's now made improvements to Morse code in Gboard for Android. A blog post by Tania Finlayson, a developer and expert in Morse code assistive technology who worked with Google, says that Gboard for Android lets you attach external switches to a device so that people with limited mobility can operate it.

Additionally, Google has made a game to help you learn how to type in Morse code. The game is available on Android, iOS, and desktop, and Google says that it'll teach you how to type in Morse code in less than an hour.

It's always good to see improved accessibility in mobile apps and services, and so it's good to see Morse code support make its way to Gboard for iOS after being on Android for a couple of months. If you use Gboard, go ahead and give this Morse code feature a try!

The packs a 6.3-inch FHD+ 19:5:9 aspect ratio curved glass display with a notch, is powered by Kirin 970 SoC with support for GPU Turbo, packs 6GB of RAM and runs Android 8.1 (Oreo) with EMUI 8.2, similar to the Honor Play, but this has a 16-megapixel rear camera AI scene recognition that can detect over 500 scenes and the 24-megapixel secondary rear camera for portrait shots.

It has a 24-megapixel front camera along with a 2-megapixel secondary camera. It has face unlocking that uses infrared light to gather face information even in dark conditions. There is also 3D Qmoji, which is similar to Apple’s Animoji. It features a glass back, fingerprint sensor on the back and packs a 3750mAh battery with support for fast charging.

In the latest twist to this story, it turns out that Samsung's upcoming smartwatch, dubbed 'Galaxy Watch,' may come with Wear OS after all. It's also being rumored to have a blood pressure monitor.

This report comes from Ice universe on Twitter, who has a solid track record for leaking Samsung info. He claims that the upcoming Samsung smartwatch will be called 'Galaxy Watch.' A deviation from the Gear model name would make sense given that Samsung has historically used the Galaxy nameplate for Android devices. New UX interaction" is on board, which isn't surprising given the company's first use of Android Wear / Wear OS in years.

More interestingly, the Galaxy Watch is expected to have the ability to take blood pressure measurements, which would make it the first (actual) smartwatch to be able to do so. Samsung does have a patent for blood-pressure monitoring that doesn't involve an inflatable cuff, and that'll probably be used here. Additionally, Ice universe touts panel-level packaging (PLP) tech, which is a new manufacturing process for processors that should make them cheaper and physically smaller. That could explain the large 470mAh battery that will supposedly be crammed inside.

As for when this Galaxy Watch would debut, we're not sure. It's possible that it'll launch on August 9th alongside the Galaxy Note9 and (likely) Tab S4, but we're not sure if the watch is far enough along to warrant that. Here's hoping that we get some more details on it sooner than later.

#IOS 12 Public #Beta 2 released

Two days after Apple released a new iOS 12 beta for developers, the same update has been released to public testers.

iOS 12 Public Beta 2 is now available to members of the Apple Beta Software Program. This update should be similar to the iOS 12 beta 3 update that was recently released to developers. The difference in numbered betas is due to the fact that Apple didn't release iOS 12 beta 1 to public testers, so the public beta is only on its second release.
If you're not in the Apple Beta Software Program, you can sign up right here. You'll simply need to enroll your Apple ID, add a special profile to your iPhone or iPad, and then you should be able to install the update over the air.

The update to iOS 12 is a significant one, adding new features like grouped notifications, improvements to Do Not Disturb, digital wellness features like a Screen Time app that'll show you how often you use your phone, new Animoji, and custom Memoji.

With mobile date getting faster and smartphones having larger storage, you'd be forgiven if you thought the need for slimmer and more efficient apps is dwindling. Quite the contrary, many developers are building bigger apps with overflowing features, which are not optimized enough for the lower-end devices and slower networks that are still found all around the world. To provide an alternative and avoid alienating this large user base, these developers are making "lite" versions of their apps — we've already seen this happen with Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Twitter, Uber, LinkedIn, Skype, Shazam, and all of Google's Go apps. Instagram is now joining the fold with its own Lite app.

Instagram Lite takes after the redesigned mobile web app that launched last year — in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it were just a wrapper around it because they look exactly the same. It doesn't have all of Instagram's features yet, but you can see your timeline, explore posts, upload your own, search, and most importantly, view/publish Stories. That's Instagram's bread and butter now. So far, direct messaging is missing and you can't upload videos or tag people, but Instagram says some of these will be coming later. I am also not sure if notifications are working; the app has settings to receive email and SMS, but not push notifications from interactions with your photos and stories.

Although Instagram Lite is only 573KB in size and will not use your data or phone storage upon first download/install, the app doesn't seem to do anything beyond that to limit its footprint. There are no measures to restrict its data consumption or lower its local storage use, which is why I am always a little dubious of this kind of app. After a couple of minutes of use, Lite is filling 13.45MB of my phone's storage, most of which was downloaded as I flipped through a few screens to check how things work. That's not so light.

Xiaomi is rumored to launch a new smartphone tomorrow in China. The company also posted a teaser video showcasing the blue color retail box. As expected, Xiaomi is going to launch the Mi 6X Hatsune Miku Limited Edition smartphone. The device was accidentally listed on Mi.com revealing complete details of this special edition smartphone. In 2017, Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 4X Hatsune Miku Edition smartphone. Now, the new Mi 6X will be the second device to come out from the collaboration with Japan’s Crypton Future Media.

While the Mi 6X was originally launched Black, Blue, Red, Gold, and Rose Gold color options, the upcoming Mi 6X Hatsune Miku Limited Edition comes in Green color. As it is a limited edition smartphone, it will be available in limited units and the production number along with Hatsune Miku image will also be engraved on the rear. The Mi 6X Hatsune Miku Limited Edition will be available only in 6GB RAM + 64GB storage variant. It is priced at 2099 Yuan (approx $315 / Rs 21,700) while the standard variant with the same configuration costs 1799 Yuan.

Talking about the specifications, the device comes with a 5.99-inch Full HD+ (2160 x 1080 pixels) display with 18:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 Mobile Platform coupled with Kryo 260 CPU and Adreno 512 GPU. As mentioned earlier, the Xiaomi Mi 6X Hatsune Miku Limited Edition comes with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage. There is no 3.5m audio jack on this devices, instead, the users have to use the single USB Type-C port for both charging and connecting wired headsets.

In terms of optics, the limited edition smartphone offers 20MP + 12MP dual rear cameras with f/1.8 aperture and a single 20MP single front camera for selfies and video calls. It is backed by a 3,010mAh non-removable battery and supports 18W Quick Charge 3.0 fast charging technology. It will be running on Android 8.1 Oreo-based MIUI 9.5 out of the box and will soon receive the MIUI 10 update.
