Problem in connecting Wifi in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS after upgrading?

Hi all,

Recently i upgraded my Operating System to Ubuntu 14.04 LTS from ubuntu 12.04 LTS in my Dell Vostro laptop. But after upgrade has finished i found my wifi connection not working in Ubuntu 14.04.

I checked #ifconfig -a, but wlan0 is not listed in the list of interfaces.

After some research i found the solution.

Here i'm providing some commands to troubleshoot your wlan interface.

> Check all the wireless devices available in the system and their state (block or unblock)

#rfkill list all

1: hci0: Bluetooth
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no

Here i did not found my Wlan device.. If wireless device installed properly the output will be

And make sure Wireless LAN is unblocked (blocked: no) for proper working.

And finally installed broadcom drivers using the following command (after installation Restart may required) through the Wired ethernet connection.

How to change the COM Port number in Windows?

Hi all.. When we insert a Pen drive or Modem, there will be a port associated with the each device in the Device Manager in the Windows Operating System. Some times we may want to change the COM Port of a particular device for some purpose.

So here is the procedure to change the COM Port of a particular device in the Windows XP based systems.

Insert the device to the usb port. After successfully inserting the device open the properties dialog by right clicking on the My Computer, then click on Hardware tab, then click Device Manager and then Ports (COM & LPT).

My Computer (Right click) > Properties > Hardware (tab) > Device Manager > Ports (COM & LPT)

Then double click (or Right click then Properties) on the device name i.e. brand name of the product. You will get a dialog, goto Port Settings tab in that dialog, then click on Advanced.. button
A new dialog with COM Port Number drop down will appear, change the port number you want. You might get a warning message about whether you wish to continue, Click on Yes
Then Click OK to close the dialog. And close Device Manager dialog window.
Now Remove your device safely and Connect it to system again, then See the Device Manager Ports to view the changed COM Port.

How to mount ISO image (ISO13346 or UDF, ISO9660) in Ubuntu

ISO image is an archieve file also known as disk image of optical disk. These images are used to write optical discs. Most of the bootable software/OS available in image file.

There are two main file systems of ISO file, They are ISO 9660 and ISO/IEC 13346. ISO 9660 filesystem(fs) is used with CD ROM, and ISO 13346(also known as Universal Disk Format(UDF)) is used with the DVD or blueray disks.

Some times we have ISO images, we need to extract the content of the image file.Some images are in ISO 9660 file system and some images are in UDF fs. So to mount these types of images in ubuntu follow the given procedure.

For ISO 9660 file system

Create a directory in the /media directory with myiso or any name

#cd /media

#mkdir myiso

#mount -o loop -t iso9660 <filename>.iso /media/myiso

(-t is used to specify the type of the file system)

Here <filename> is the path to your iso file which has the extension iso

For UDF (ISO/IEC 13346 ) file system

Create a directory in the /media directory with myiso or any name

#cd /media

#mkdir myiso

#mount -o loop -t udf,iso13346 <filename>.iso /media/myiso

(-t is used to specify the type of the file system)

Here <filename> is the path to your iso file which has the extension iso

Note: if you don't know the which file system the image file contains to extract try using the ISO9660 file system type, if it is not ISO 9660 fs, it will give you a message "This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification". The try using UDF fs type

How to change bluetooth device name in Ubuntu 12.04

Some times it is confusing when we want to send data through bluetooth device in ubuntu, when all the near by systems having the same name. So we can't find the target system to whom we send. So in this case we want to give a specific name to bluetooth on the target system.

However in Ubuntu 11.10, the bluetooth device name will be the system name(hostame) with device number. In Ubuntu 12.04 the bluetooth device name is defaultly ubuntu-0.

So to change the BT device name type the following command in terminal

# hciconfig hci0 name newname

replace newname with your desired name in the above command.(you need to have sudo permissions to the above command)

To check your bluetooth device name, type the following command in the terminal, and check your name in the command output

#hciconfig -a

Note: This trick is to change bluetooth device name temporarily...It will chane to default name after system reboot.

How to remove icons in the gnome panel of Ubuntu

Gnome classic panel is the very popular in the Ubuntu compared to the other like unity. Unity comes defaulty with Ubuntu 11.10 and later versions. In Ubuntu Linux, gnome classic Panel allows us to drag and drop the applications as icons as shortcut icons to quick launch applications.

And when users want to remove or move these icons by right clicking on the icon it does not give the option to remove as it only have options Launch and Properties.

So if you want to remove or move the icon from the panel you have to press ALT key while clicking right click button, means simultaneously click ALT and right button, that will give you the options like Move and Remove from panel as shown below

If you press remove from panel it will removed and if you want to move press Move and the drag it to the new position.

How to display Line Numbers in vi or vim editor in Linux Terminal?

Want to show line numbers in the vi/ vim editor in the linux system like ubuntu..? Ok I will explain you how to show numbers in the editor of linux in two methods.

1. Temporary Method:

1. To display line numbers in the file, open the file in vim/ vi editor through terminal

2. Press [ESC] button and : (colon) and the type “set number” then press enter,

Eg: :set number

then you will get numbers in the file...

Note: If you want to hide the numbers you can type the following command by preesing [ESC] and : in the vi/vim editor

:set nonumber

2. Perminent Method:

To make vim/ vi editor to show numbers defaulty follow the procedure below:

1. Open the file .vimrc in your home directory (/home/username/.vimrc) by typing as following

$vim ~/.vimrc

(If the file already not exists, it will be created with no text)

2. Then edit the file by typing the text below,

set number

Then Press ESC button and Colon button to go to command mode, then press wq (for saving and quit the file)

:wq

3. Its done. All your files now defaulty will open with Line numbers

Note: If you don't want to defaulty showing Line numbers, remove the line edited in .vimrc

How to display & change Hostname in Linux system in different ways

Hii buddies, in this post let we see how to change and display the host name in the linux systems in different ways.

Generally we see the host name of linux system in the terminal window, like username@hostname:~$

To display the hostname, domain name in the terminal type the below commands

$hostname

$domainname

For Debian based Linux and Open SuSe Distribution users:

Various other commands for display and change hostname,

To display hostname

#sysctl kernel.hostname

To change hostname temporarily use the following sysntax

1. $hostname technoyouth10
So the hostname will be now technoyouth10 (check it with by typing $hostname)

2. #sysctl kernel.hostname=New_host_name

3. You can edit the file /proc/sys/kernel/hostname to change hostname temporarily

To change the hostname permanently use the following procedure

Open the hostname or HOSTNAME file in etc directory

$sudo vi /etc/hostname

2.Edit the file with new hostname

technoyouth10

3.press escape and wq (wq for saving the file)

4.then save the settings(without rebooting) by typing the following command

$sudo service network restart (or) $sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

For Fedora and Red Hat Linux users:

Edit the /etc/sysconfig/network file by using following command

$sudo /ect/sysconfig/network
type the new hostname
then save the settings by typing the following command

$service network restart

Celkon has launched a new tablet PC named Celkon Ee-Tab (CT-1) on August 25th 2012. Ponnala Lakshmaiah (Andhra Pradesh IT Minister) launched this tablet PC.
