<p>The realization that Enterprise Applications could be developed with much higher levels of speed and quality due to innovations in automation, lead to my leaving a senior position based in the US, (Corporate Director Enterprise Applications – Ramco Systems Corporation) and return to India to make this happen. Enterprise Applications is a $500 billion market and any major innovation would provide lots of spaces to effectively compete even if competition was from leading multinationals.</p>
<p><strong>Major steps you went through to start your company</strong></p>
<p>We know that we would have a long period of R&amp;D (4-5 years) and hence we set up two teams – one to obtain revenue using conventional approaches and one to do the R&amp;D.</p>
<p><strong>Seed capital for your company</strong></p>
<p>Having worked for 17 years in the industry with international exposure prior to this, I leveraged my savings as well as family property. We also leveraged accruals from project solutions to fund the development.</p>

<strong>Biggest challenge for you so far, and how did you overcome it?</strong></p>
<p>Funding. For some reasons VC’s don’t want to fund Enterprise Applications Companies – for them it is a mature and fragmented market. We think that we are the pioneers in a market that is going to reconfigure completely and hence we can become a key player. We are profitable and can sustain good growth ourselves, though the presence of funding could accelerate the process.</p>

<p>Kallos Solutions owns the KServe (www.KServe.net) range of Enterprise Applications covering product suites for ERP, CRM, HCM, Payroll and Retail. Kallos also has developed a rapid application development platform which was used for building its product suite. Custom applications are delivered to customers using this platform. The company has delivered over 120 solutions to customers so far.<br />

<p>The KServe range of products are known for comprehensive web ready functionality that is very affordable and also easily adaptable – both of which are rare in the enterprise applications space. Custom solutions built on its platform can be delivered much faster, with lower effort, better quality and at lower prices than conventional approaches. All these ‘customer delight’ capabilities are possible because of underlying innovation in the automation of building of enterprise applications.</p>

TREC - STEP, established in 1986 in the sprawling environs of Regional Engineering College, Tiruchirappalli is the first STEP in the country. It has been continually engaged in promoting a new genre of entrepreneurs and many new initiatives for ushering in technology based growth.</p>

<p>TREC-STEP is also the first DSIR TePP Outreach Centre in the country.  With the TePP objective of unearthing the latent innovation potential of individuals, exactly aligning with TREC-STEP’s objective of promoting innovative start-up ventures, the TUC at TREC-STEP has energized and leveraged the innovation delivery system of the region manifolds.TREC-STEP has also been able to dovetail this TePP innovators with seed funding and other innovation delivery programmes. TePP Programme has become the most important innovation initiation programme for incubating high growth innovative ventures in the region.  In addition to this, it has also successfully deployed the Technology Angels Network bringing to the front, the latent expertise of NIT Trichy and other institutions in supporting, nurturing and delivering innovation continuously thus creating an innovation enabled region. TREC-STEP has also worked with a number of international developmental organizations in innovation development projects, such as UNDP, UNIDO, European Commission, the World Bank  infoDev, British Council Division, IDRC etc.<br />

<p><strong> What are the other supports provided to the Innovator</strong></p>
<p>TREC-STEP provides a rich mix of software and hardware development package for creating successful innovative ventures. In the soft side, synergizing the Innovation Support TePP Scheme of DSIR helps in attracting innovative individuals and realize their dream products in to proto-types and working models. A Technology Angel Network of nearly 25 academicians from various engineering departments of NIT Trichy provide the guidance, evaluation and innovation development support for innovators. TREC-STEP has not only planned and implemented special events for popularizing Tepp Programme, but also put in focused efforts to integrate and disseminate the DSIR supported TePP Programme to a wider section of the community by integrating it into all its interaction programmes apart from several innovation camps organized.  It has also built partnerships with several reputed institutions in the region to attract more innovators into the TePP fold and help them to overcome their innovation challenges successfully by facilitating them to access and fruitfully utilize the vital funding support provided by DSIR. All innovations are expected to flower into start-up ventures through TREC-STEP mentoring and incubation process and support.</p>
<p>In addition to this a plethora of business incubation hardware support is also provided to these budding ventures. TREC-STEP has a built up space of 40,000 sq.ft. of 25 Nursery Incubation modules.  These incubation modules with central common product development and production facilities established provide invaluable assistance for start-up companies and reduce their risk initially. Facilities such as internet, power, water and library etc are provided for budding entrepreneurs on chargeable basis.  These focused facilities have been instrumental in promoting nearly 186 new ventures, the highest number of ventures promoted by any incubator in India.</p>
<p><strong>How do you spot the Innovators</strong></p>
<p>TREC-STEP regularly organizes various programs to publicize the TEPP scheme and attract the innovators to benefit by this novel initiative.  Regular advertisements are placed in leading news papers/magazines both in English and Tamil for wide reach(5 times a year). Seminars are conducted in industrial associations and technical institution to attract entrepreneurs and students to avail the schemes of DSIR through the TUC. New innovators approach TUC through the referral of successful innovators who were benefited from the DSIR schemes. TREC-STEP has also held a series of meetings with E-Cell of National Institute of Technology in order to take-up an Innovation Mining Project to unearth latent innovation potential of students for creating commercially viable products and processes. This would not only be the first stage towards strengthening venture incubation among NIT students but also motivate students to think more innovatively in the future even if they do not take up entrepreneurship as a career. This project is also seen as the one-step-forward-on-the-ground initiative compared to standard business plan contest now mushrooming everywhere.</p>
<p><strong>Initiatives and Events conducted by you</strong></p>
<p>Innovation Challenge Contest at NIT, Trichy was conducted in order to bring out the latent innovation potential among the students and to facilitate more students with innovative ideas to realize them as successful prototypes. A unique contest ‘ideas challenge - cash it on the ideas catch’ was promoted by TREC-STEP, in which the 10 best selected ideas were awarded cash prizes and the efforts are on to generate Applications for TePP /Micro TePP support.TREC-STEP is the first TUC to bring out a  series of TePP popularizing  articles in  local, national and international magazines and platforms. TREC-STEP worked with INSEAD (World’s Best Management Institution Outside Europe) to generate an exclusive comprehensive coverage in DARE Magazine in its recent issue. TREC-STEP organized an Innovation Booth in the International Conference on Business Incubation  at Chennai with the support of DSIR, generating very good marketing opportunity.TREC-STEP has published a series of articles for Info Dev World Bank on TePP Success which have been published in their web site and got great visibility and coverage.TREC-STEP has promoted the TePP Activities to  GTZ and working to link the DSIR TePP Programme for greater leverage.TREC-STEP has involved industrial giants like BHEL, OFT, HAPP as much as possible in TePP Programme bringing in new expertise, enthusiasm and innovation participation.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>NEW DELHI: Facing shortage of teaching staff in the wake of capacity augmentation, IITs have proposed to appoint foreign nationals to its faculty positions.</p>
<p>The move, if accepted, could enable the prestigio us institutes to appoint foreign teachers on permanent positions which could be up to 10 per cent of the faculty strength, said IIT officials.</p>
<p>The proposal is expected to be deliberated at the next IIT council meeting here on Friday.</p>
<p>IITs have contended that the presence of foreign faculty on IIT campuses will benefit graduating students in the globalised world, besides lending a true international flavour in the campuses and reducing brain drain.</p>
<p>Appointment of foreign faculty could also give a boost to IITs&#8217; plan to enrol foreign students for the post-graduate programme. IITs have already requested the HRD Ministry to enrol foreign students to the extent of 25 per cent of the total student strength.</p>
<p>&#8220;IITs are now being increasingly recognised internationally as attractive destination for students. This perceived superiority needs to be leveraged to the fullest extent as expeditiously as possibly,&#8221; the officials said.</p>
<p>They said that US varsities have benefited by attracting faculty from across the globe and India cannot afford to lose the chance to attract the best talent in teaching and research.</p>
<p>The HRD Ministry had recently permitted IITs to hire Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) as permanent faculty after an initial vetting process.</p>
<p>The IIT council meeting could also finalise plans to set up &#8216;centre of studies&#8217; devoted to a foreign country with a view to develop expertise on countries of strategic importance.</p>
<p>Each IIT, the officials said, could concentrate on a particular country. As in the US, such centres will be available for advising the Government especially in terms of strategic negotiations.</p>
<p>The recommendations of the Prof Acharya Committee on streamlining and rationalising JEE examinations and the prospects of a two-tier examination process will also be discussed at the meeting.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nuclear engineering concerns itself with the application of the breakdown of atomic nuclei based on the principles of nuclear physics.This field looks into various other things like, maintenance of nuclear fission systems and components especially, nuclear reactors, nuclear power plants and nuclear weapons. It also includes the study of nuclear fusion, medical and other applications of radiation, radiation safety, nuclear fuel and other related technology, nuclear proliferation, and the effect of radioactive waste or radioactivity on the environment.</p>

<p>Nuclear engineers develop instruments and systems that are beneficial to national laboratories, the private industry, and also universities. These devices also benefit the society at large. They also develop radioactive materials that can be used in various fields like, manufacturing, agriculture, medicine and power generation. Nuclear engineers work in various areas. These include monitoring and operating a nuclear power generating plant, in a nuclear fuel cycle, where they are responsible for handling nuclear fuel and also for disposal of nuclear waste. Other areas include creating nuclear power sources for a spacecraft and also in using radioactive material to develop equipment to treat medical problems.</p>
<p>Most nuclear engineers begin their work under the supervision of an experienced engineer. They might receive formal classroom or seminar-type of training. As their knowledge base increases they are given projects to handle on their own. Once they are given individual projects, their responsibilities also increase. Depending on their progress, they could become technical specialists or supervise a team of engineers and  technicians. Some could also become engineering managers or take up  other managerial posts or even a sales job.</p>
<p>Since most nuclear engineers work in teams, they are expected to have good interaction with their other co-workers. They should have good communication skills, both oral and written. Communication skills also come to use when they have to interact with people outside their field. Another vital skill is having good presentation skills which comes handy especially during topical meetings, professional associations, and at various publications. They are expected to be creative, inquisitive, analytical, and detail-oriented.</p>
<p>A trainee nuclear engineer gets a salary of around Rs.15,000 a month. The pay varies depending on the grades. For an entry-level scientific officer the pay varies from Rs.15,600 to 39,100. the government pays 20% more. For those officers posted at nuclear sites, they get benefits like extra pay, even loans to purchase household goods, computer etc.</p>

<p>Other than this Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and Nuclear Power Cooperation of India offer training to new inductees.</p>
<p>Though nuclear engineering is a growing field, the industry still suffers from want of people. Prof R.K. Shivpuri, adviser, Delhi University told Hindustan Timmes 100 Great Carrers that, “there aren&#8217;t many professionals to work in India&#8217;s growing $50 billion-$100 billion nuclear industry.” This need can be fulfilled only when the existing intitutes increase their intake and the government should try to get more institutes to offer courses in nuclear engineering.</p>

<p>After his first novel on the super-competitive sector, banker Ravi Subramanian tells you how to get a Ferrari in his second book, &#8220;I Bought the Monk&#8217;s Ferrari&#8221;. The obvious reference to Robin Sharma&#8217;s bestseller, &#8220;The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari&#8221;, gives you a hint that this book by Subramanian is going to be very different from the first.</p>
<p>However, it&#8217;s not the luxury car the author&#8217;s talking about. It&#8217;s about the Fortune for Every Right Rigorous and Resourceful Individual (FERRARI). Taking off from the young management trainee, the author delves into the lives of corporate leaders who have crossed several hurdles to own their own Ferrari (in some cases, even the car). He writes about how a 16-year-old girl aspired to be a successful businesswoman when her father refused to give her the swivel chair in his office. It was her grit and determination that made the young girl HSBC CEO Naina Lal Kidwai. Subramanian gives examples of Laxmi Mittal, Sourav Ganguly, Bill Gates to drive home the point that you need to aspire high to grow big.</p>
<p>The author enlists Ten Commandments that can help you pave your way to success and even get a Ferrari.By the time you finish the Ten Commandments, you wonder what this book is about. The management fresher dwells on your mind and you hope this book will take off like,&#8221; If God was a Banker&#8221; did but it doesn&#8217;t. Though the author has done well to keep the chapters short, and his language lucid, the stories don&#8217;t make much of an impact. Probably because the stories of the achievers are well-known. In his bid to cater to the society&#8217;s elites, the book doesn&#8217;t draw in experiences from the broader cross-section of the society.</p>
<p>However, in spite of its shortcomings, the book is worth a read. Subramanian&#8217;s interactions with his daughter are delightful to read about. Only in these parts does he evoke an emotional response from the reader. You wish for more, but he doesn&#8217;t offer any.</p>
