I know Western Digital’s line of Passport Express external hard drives (they hook up to any computer with USB) are good buys—I’ve used a blue 250GB for the past year now, and it’s proven fast and reliable so far.

Wow, I bought this display for P15,500 last September, and now it’s only P10,800?! Granted, the display continues to be worth every centavo I spent on it, but that near P5,000 price drop is still pretty depressing!

You’ve probably received an email that details how you can use your phone in emergencies, and what you can do if someone’s forcing you to withdraw from an ATM at gunpoint. It’s important to note that all of the items listed in that message are false, one way or another. Here’s why.

The email I received (abridged for brevity) goes:

FIRST: If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile network and there is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish the emergency number for you… this number 112 can be dialed even if the keypad is locked.

SECOND: Does your car have remote keyless entry? If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at home on their mobile phone from your cell phone. Hold your cell phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end. Your car will unlock.

THIRD: Hidden Battery Power… To activate, press the keys *3370# Your mobile will restart with this reserve and the Instrument will show a 50% increase in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your mobile next time.

FOURTH: How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone? To check your Mobile phone’s serial number, key in the following digits on your phone: * # 0 6 # A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.. When your phone gets stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this code. They will then be able to block your handset So even if the thief changes the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.

LASTLY: ATM - PIN Number Reversal - Good to Know If you should ever be forced by a robber to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your PIN # in reverse. If your pin number is 1234, then you would put in 4321. The ATM system recognizes that your PIN number is backwards from the ATM card you placed in the machine.

The machine will still give you the money you requested, but unknown to the robber, the police will be immediately dispatched to the location..

Let’s debunk the myths—including the unrelated ATM one.

112 Works—But You Should Dial 117 in the Philippines

Yes, all GSM phones—the kind we use in the Philippines—can use any available network to connect you with emergency services when you dial 112. And yes, you can dial this number on most phones even if the keypad is locked.

For touchscreen phones however, it’s different. On my N97 I have to unlock the screen, go to the dialer, then tap 1-1-2. The same is true for the iPhone. And the number you should dial is different in the Philippines

For the record, I dialed 112 on my phone (I’m a Smart Buddy Prepaid user). The call connected and I heard this pre-recorded message: “For emergency assistance, please dial 117. Thank you.” Dialing that number connected me with an operator.

Turns out 117 is an emergency hotline maintained by the Department of Interior and Local Government, which works for all networks (Globe, Smart, Sun). The hotline coordinates with any emergency services near your area, and they can call your phone back in case the call gets cut. I found all this out from the answering operator, who politely told me to call 9259111 for more information about the service (stay tuned for updates).

So, during an emergency, dial 117, not 112. It’s very important to give your location to the operator as soon as possible.

No Can Unlock Your Car Through a Cell Phone Call

Debunked since 2004, Snopes explains that remote keyless entry (RKE) systems work through radio waves, not sound:

Relaying remote entry system signals via telephone might work if the signals were sound-based, but they’re not. An RKE system transmits an encrypted data stream to a receiver inside the automobile via an RF (radio frequency) signal, a signal that can’t be effectively relayed via cell phone. (In any event, RKE systems and cell phones typically operate on completely different frequencies; the former in the 300 MHz range and the latter in the 800 MHz range.)

(More than a few people have inadvertently fooled themselves into believing the cell phone method of unlocking car doors actually works because they tried it and achieved the desired results — not realizing their cars were still within range of their keyless remote devices, and the signals that unlocked the doors were transmitted the usual way [i.e., through the air], not via cellular phone connections.)

*3370# Does Something Else

Many mobile phones (mostly Nokia ones) accept the code *3370#. But the “correct” code is actually *4270#.

*4270# doesn’t actually unlock a secret reserve on your battery, but activates your phone’s half rate codec mode. This mode, which can increase talk time by about 30%, makes your phone use lower audio quality for calls. (#4720# deactivates it). Again, note that this won’t work on all phones, and not on all networks—try it out for yourself and see what happens.

*#06# Can Help You Disable Your Phone—For a While at Least

Yes, typing in *#06* displays a 15-digit number unique to your handset, AKA the International Mobile Equipment Identifier (IMEI). The IMEI is also printed on the box your cell phone came in.

Ideally, after you report an IMEI as stolen to your operator, they and GSM operators all over the world will blacklist it, preventing the phone from calling or texting, even with a different SIM. Unfortunately, there are tools that allow you to change the IMEI of many phones. Change the phone’s IMEI, and it won’t trigger the blacklist blocking. “Sisiw nga yun eh, lalo na sa mga lumang models” (that’s easy, especially on older models), said an anonymous vendor in Greenhills.

The Reverse PIN System is Patented, But Not Implemented

Makes sense right? Someone’s forcing you to withdraw money from the ATM at gunpoint, and you enter your PIN backwards to alert the police. In fact, SafetyPIN was patented back in 1998.

However, the banking industry doesn’t want to implement the system. They have their reasons:

Even if police could be summoned via the keying of a special “alert” or “panic” code, they say, law enforcement would likely arrive long after victim and captor had departed. …there is [also] the problem of ATM customers’ quickly conjuring up their accustomed PINs in reverse: Even in situations lacking added stress, mentally reconstructing one’s PIN backwards is a difficult task for many people. Add to that difficulty the terror of being in the possession of a violent and armed person, and precious few victims might be able to come up with reversed PINs seamlessly enough to fool their captors into believing that everything was proceeding according to plan. As Chuck Stones of the Kansas Bankers Association said in 2004: “I’m not sure anyone here could remember their PIN numbers backward with a gun to their head.

In this case, prevention is definitely worth more than the cure. Never place yourself in a situation where someone can point a gun at you at the ATM.

So how did the phone hold up? Turns out the N97 is the best all-in-one phone to come from Nokia to date, and those who can afford the phone won’t regret the purchase. Here’s why.

Below is a compilation of the N97 mini-reviews published over the last 14 days, summarized for your convenience:

Camera

“So how does the camera hold up? Well, the N97 has the best camera phone I’ve ever used (it’s similar to the N82’s), but it definitely won’t give standalone cameras a run for their money. People planning to take photographs quickly as the moment happens will be disappointed as well. As with any other photography session under less-than-ideal lighting conditions, taking pictures with the flash off sometimes led to better results.” -The Nokia N97’s 5 Megapixel Camera: How Does it Do?

Battery

“For now though, one thing is clear: based on my (admittedly undemanding) usage, the Nokia N97 almost lasted for two days. A definite improvement over the N96!” -Nokia N97 Battery Log

Bundled Extras

“All things said, each Nokia N97 comes with a lot of useful items. At the very least, the USB data cable, hands-free kit, charger adapter, and the phone’s built-in 32GB of memory means you don’t have to buy accessories to maximize the N97. The bundle is good, but pretty much standard for a high-end phone.” -The Nokia N97: What Comes in the Box

Build Quality and Durability

“The N97 isn’t the most fragile thing in the world. In fact, despite it’s moving display it does pretty well in terms of rigidity and build quality. It can also survive the occasional accidental fall—which we learned the hard way after a particularly cringe-worthy impact on a tiled floor. Except for a couple of minor problems, Nokia has done pretty well, and the N97 definitely features better build quality than the N96.” -The Nokia N97: Build Quality and Durability

Responsiveness

“…it seems Nokia learned a thing or two from its experience with the 5800; the initial touchscreen responsiveness issues reported by early adopters of that phone (eventually fixed with a firmware update) are not present on the N97. This high-end phone can actually function as quickly as its less-powerful counterparts, despite having more features to manage.” -The Nokia N97: Responsiveness

Exterior and Styling

“In short, those who decide to buy the phone won’t end up with a cheap looking device. The N97 boasts an exterior and styling that is worthy of its price, coming across as a luxury item without calling too much attention. Owners will have to do a bit more to protect the Nokia N97 from oil, fingerprints, and scratches though.” - The Nokia N97: Exterior and Styling

Conclusion

Is this phone worth its P34,000 launch price? It’s hard to answer that question objectively, but here’s a guide: the Nokia N97 literally has every feature Nokia bothered putting into its phones, boasts a big screen, and is actually quite responsive. The touchscreen interface is good enough that you can access all of the phone’s functions without sliding out the QWERTY, and actually get caught by your friendly neighborhood MMDA for texting while driving. Speaking of which, the small keyboard is very easy to type on, rendering the bundled stylus unnecessary.

More importantly, the phone enjoys the support of a high-capacity battery, making it possible to use all those features for an appreciable amount of time. The only thing missing from this phone is a flashlight, ladies and gentlemen.
