Microsoft gives away Office apps for iPhone, iPad

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Microsoft is offering free upgraded versions of its Office software for iPhones and iPads, as the software giant further embraces the so-called "freemium" strategy favored by many newer companies seeking success online.

Give away a basic version of a popular service, and the world may beat a path to your door and be willing to pay a little more for extras, or so the thinking goes.

Microsoft, the longtime king of desktop software, has generally protected its model of getting paid upfront for what it developed. But as the company strives to stay relevant for workers and consumers in an increasingly mobile world — and better compete with Google, Apple and others — it is offering substantial versions of its most popular products free of charge for smartphones and tablets. Microsoft is hoping to keep people using its products across all their devices, while betting that many will ultimately pay for fuller-featured versions of the software.

"There's going to be a handful of tech companies that everyone depends on," for online software, said Maribel Lopez, a mobile tech analyst at Lopez Research. "Microsoft wants to make sure they're one of them."

As more workers use devices other than desktop PCs, they want to have the same capabilities on all their devices, says Michael Atalla, director of Microsoft's Office apps product management. "We want to make sure they can move seamlessly from one to another," he added.

The apps released Thursday, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, replace a limited iPhone version and upgrade a more powerful set of apps that the company released for iPad tablets in March. The older iPhone version allowed users to create and view files for free, but had very limited features. Earlier versions for the iPad offered more capabilities, but creating new files required a paid subscription to the company's Office 365 subscription service.

The new apps have more of the capabilities found in Office desktop software and don't require a paid subscription for creating files and other functions. Microsoft is still reserving some premium features, including security tools for business users, for paid subscribers. Microsoft will continue to charge for Office 365 on PCs and for business users.

All Black suffers Twitter withdrawal

Self-confessed tweeting fanatic, All Blacks winger Cory Jane, said Monday he was suffering severe withdrawal pangs after the team management imposed a Twitter ban until the end of the Rugby World Cup.

Although he's stopped sending messages, Jane said he's constantly checking his account.

"I'm battling. I'm checking it like every 10 minutes just to see what people are writing and what's going on. It's starting to hurt but rules are rules," he said.

"The worst thing about it is when somebody writes something you just want to answer and let them know... but we're not allowed to."

Jane's tweeting has landed him in trouble with the All Blacks in the past, notably when he revealed in 2009 he had not been selected for a Test against England 24 hours before the team was officially released.

Coach Graham Henry admitted then he did not know what Twitter was and "thought it was a new guy playing five-eighth (fly-half) for England."

Jane said that while he struggled with the ban on responding to the many messages he received, he was not tempted to use a pseudonym because of the consequences of being caught.

"I'm not going to do that. I don't want to get kicked out first of all. I'll just abide by the rules and keep checking it every 10 minutes."

Meanwhile, the England team management have told their players they can tweet during the September 9-October 23 tournament as long as they don't reveal team selections, criticise the management or taunt the opposition.

The Lian Li PC-90's unique internal layout allows large HPTX motherboards to be held in a standard, full-tower case with a weight of only 6.6kg. China official tells Web firms to control content

BEIJING (AP) — A Communist Party leader has told China's Internet companies to tighten control over material online as Beijing cracks down on dissent and tries to block the rise of Middle East-style protests.

The party secretary for Beijing, Liu Qi, issued the warning following a visit this week to Sina Corp., which operates a popular microblogging site, according to the party-published newspaper Beijing Daily.

Internet companies should "strengthen management and firmly prevent the spread of fake and harmful information," Liu was quoted as saying after the visit Monday to Sina. He said companies should "resist fake and negative information."

Communist authorities encourage Internet use for education and business but are uneasy about its potential to spread dissent, especially after social networking and other websites played a key role in protests that brought down governments in Egypt and Tunisia.

Beijing is in the midst of one of its most sweeping crackdowns on dissent in years and has detained or questioned hundreds of activists, lawyers and others.

The government tries to block access to foreign websites deemed subversive and Chinese operators of websites where the public can post comments are required to watch the material and remove any that violates censorship rules.

The government's censorship rules prompted Google Inc. to close its China search engine last year. Mainland users can see Google's Chinese-language search site in Hong Kong but access is slower and the company's China market share has shrunk.

The report on Liu's warning gave no details of how Internet companies were expected to change their management.

Employees who answered the phone at Sina referred questions to a spokeswoman who did not answer her phone.

With Liu during the visit were Sina CEO Charles Chao and Kai-fu Lee, a former boss of Google's China unit who runs a technology investment company, according to the Beijing Daily.

Chao told Forbes magazine in March that Sina's microblogging site, Weibo, has at least 100 employees monitoring content 24 hours a day. The company said in May that the number of Weibo users had passed 140 million.

Also this week, the Beijing Internet Media Association, a government-sanctioned industry group, called on its 104 member companies to police Internet content, possibly prompted by Liu's order.

"Propaganda guidance to the public should be led toward a correct direction," the appeal said, according to the Beijing Daily. "Online news should be trustworthy and should not spread rumors or vulgar contents."

Liu, the party secretary, also visited the headquarters of Youku.com Inc., a video portal, and talked with CEO Victor Koo, the report said.

China has the world's biggest online population, with 485 million Internet users as of June 30, according to the government-sanctioned China National Internet Information Center.

Meanwhile, a major Chinese Internet commerce platform, Taobao, has told merchants that use its service to stop selling virtual private network and other software that allows Web surfers to avoid government filters.

Taobao, part of Alibaba Group, said it acted after finding VPNs were being used to visit foreign websites illegally. A company spokesman said Tuesday it took the action on its own without receiving government orders.

Facebook kills off Groupon competitor

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Facebook is ending its Deals program, which offered the site's 750 million users discounts similar to those offered by daily deals site Groupon.

Facebook said in a statement Friday it decided to end Deals after four months of testing. The service will wind down in coming weeks. It was available only in Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, San Diego and San Francisco.

Facebook says it remains committed to serving local businesses through ads, pages and other products. And it will continue to offer "check-in deals." These lets businesses like restaurants and stores offer deals to customers who "check in" through Facebook to let their friends know where they are.

MANILA, Philippines — On September 24, 2010, Friday, the country woke up and got a dose of the good news accompanied by photos in vivid, three-dimensional colors.

From that day on, the Manila Bulletin, the nation's leading newspaper, has fully embraced the advancing media technology.

The 3-D newspaper technology, which has already started in other parts of the globe, is now in the Philippines now a part of history.

“We’re trailblazing for the industry,” said Bulletin managing editor Fil C. Sionil.

The 3D issue, which was featured in television morning shows “Umagang Kay Ganda” of ABS-CBN, “Mornings at ANC” of ABS-CBN News Channel and radio programs of DZBB and DZMM, received positive reactions from readers around Metro Manila, where the limited 3D issue was circulated.

Christine Grace Sarmiento-Tria, account manager of Fleishman-Hillard Philippines, said that the Manila Bulletin 3D issue is now a part of the Philippine Journalism history as it's not only the paper's first 3D edition but also a first in the Philippine newspaper industry.

Wilson Tan of Thinking Tools, Cebu, congratulated Manila Bulletin for this innovation, wishing that the newspaper of the future would also include audio.

Anj Segovia of MSI-ECS said that she won't let the day pass without grabbing the first 3D newspaper in the Philippines and she would bring the paper to show it to people at home.

Radio tandem Anthony Taberna and Gerry Baja said that people who said that the newspaper is a dying industry would think again because of this innovation. "It has made the newspaper new again.”

Mitchel R. Confesor, PBSP Media Relations Officer, said, “Congratulations to Manila Bulletin for marking a photojournalism milestone in this Friday’s issue (Sept. 24, 2010) with the pioneering of printed news photos in three dimensions.”

Miniguru Keyboards have Been Cancelled

If you were among the people who were awaiting the release of the Miniguru Keyboard, bad news! It seems that while the keyboard stood to make typing easier, its complex nature failed to impress and convince the makers to go through with it.

The whole concept of the keyboard was indeed neat but also complicated. The makers lost faith on the potential of the keyboard, a peripheral that is certainly not as hot compared to other ones we see in the market.

And while typing could have been easier, old habits are hard to beat. The idea may be welcome but if you take it all seriously, it is not an immediate need meaning techies could very well do with standard keyboards and not change them at all.

Oh well, its back to the old drawing board for the people behind the Miniguru Keyboard. Maybe a different idea would be great, something rare and of course mind-boggling!

World’s Brightest LED Projector from NEC

Though it this NEC projector is not something we may see soon, it may yet be an idea for companies making projectors. The said NEC projector comes with a brightness count of 2,000 lumens and the ability to increase intensity as well.

It makes use of RGB color LEDs as a light source which is further brightened by multiple LED units that are used for each of the three colors. It can also display a wide color gamut of 98% as defined in Adobe’s standard TGB standard. Hopefully some good company does think of commercializing this soon. This is one projector that is sure to be a hit!

Computer Repair Firm Warns of PC Hacker Scam

The customer concerned had been called the night before by a "Microsoft Engineer" with a heavy Indian accent. The "engineer" told her that she had a problem with her computer that they had detected and they were calling up to help her. She was a little sceptical but followed their instructions.

They directed her to the System Log in Event Viewer and asked her if there were any errors. Indeed there were errors in the system log (as there almost always are). She was then directed to the Teamviewer website and asked to "Join a Session". At this point she became suspicious when they asked her for the username and password that Teamviewer had just presented her.

Had she given this username and password the "engineer" on the other end would have had full remote control of her PC and could have done almost anything such as installing a virus, removing her anti-virus or stealing all of the information on the PC. Potentially they could have installed a small piece of software called a key logger and monitored everything she did on her PC such as online banking.

iPhone 4G Coming Out This July

At this point, a lot of people are eagerly awaiting the coming of the iPhone 4G. And for now, all we can rely on is the CDMA version of the iPhone 4G which is being tested by Verizon Wireless. But you don’t have to fret since by June, official specs of the much anticipated iPhone 4G will most likely be released at the WWDC conference.

And so for now, we can just imagine what the new iPhone 4G would come out with. Rumors have it that it will have awesome features that include video chat, multi-tasking and extreme downloading. This iPhone 4g could also have dual core processors and higher and powerful graphic chips that can deliver higher video resolutions and better "still" images when taking pictures.

Well these are all speculations and while we don’t want to ruin the party, just wait and see. The iPhone 4G looks promising in terms of being sleek, packed with new hardware and multi-tasking software.

Verizon Unveils LG Fathom Windows Phone

Though unofficial, rumors are getting warm that Verizon Wireless will be releasing the LG Fathom Windows Phone. The LG Fathom will run on Windows Mobile 6.5 and will come with a touch sceen and a keyboard.

Other features of the LG Fathom include a 3.2” WVGA resistive touchscreen, support for Verizon’s voice and 3G network, and capability to connect to both GSM and HSDPA high speed data networks when roaming outside of the United States. The Fathom will also include a 3.2 megapixel camera and a microSD memory card slot.

Kindle DX now available in UK

To celebrate the sudden outbreak of crystalline precipitation currently falling on Britain, Amazon.com has announced it'll now ship an international version of its massive, designed-for-newspapers-and-textbooks Kindle to the UK -- the Kindle DX.

In principle it's the same as the standard Kindle (which we reviewed late last year), but features a larger 246mm (9.7-inch) E-Ink screen. "Kindle DX is great for personal and professional documents, cookbooks and textbooks -- anything that is highly formatted," Amazon says.

It also now supports Adobe PDF files natively (Kindles previously needed to have these converted to a format it liked), so pre-formatted pages of text, images and diagrams involve significantly less messing about. Up to 3,500 books can be stored in memory, Amazon claims, and the battery should let you read for a full week without charging.

The Kindle DX for UK features the same built-in wireless bookstore as the standard Kindle, including free wireless downloads via the device's integrated 3G modem. Its screen -- which only requires power to turn pages, not to keep displaying them -- can generate 16 shades of grey. Sony's Readers, by contrast (ha), use just eight. This means images look far better on Kindles.
