The Pack Management Project is about how manage and maintain large software collections. Through the introduction of the Package-Collection Structure installation and maintenance of software packages becomes easy and uncumbersome. Each package is installed in its own subdirectory, which allows for simultaneous installation of two or more versions of the same package. Consequently no database is needed to keep track of which package a certain file belongs to.

The structure is meant as a replacement for the usual places (/usr/local/ and /opt/) to install software packages.

To manage the structure the Packman tool is provided.

Site Content

On this site you download the Packman tool and a set of essential packages to get you started. And in the documentation section you can read about the concepts behind and how to use the Package-Collection Structure.

Additionally you can find other resources about this subject.

Pack Distribution Project

Previously this was known as the Pack Distribution Project and its purpose was to distribute precompiled binary versions a software packages - mainly for Solaris. But the packages were not updated, so that part of the project was abandoned. Now the project is focused on developing the Package-Collection Structure and the Packman tool.

Comments and bug reports are welcome at pack@sunsite.dk.
