Atomic Learning is UW-Superior's online training resource that helps guide you through common issues in a multitude of Software Applications. This is done through a library of thousands of short, easy-to-understand tutorial movies and "how do I apply that" training.

Atomic Learning makes it easy to learn new technology and encourage technology integration in the classroom. It can be used in your office, in a computer lab, in the classroom, or even at home. Any current Faculty, Staff, or Enrolled Student has access to all that Atomic Learning has to offer.

If you have questions about how to use common software products like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, Google Earth, D2L, Photoshop, and over a hundred more - Atomic Learning can help you find the answers and training you are looking for.

Please visit us on Wednesday, Feburary 8th in Swenson Hall 2020. Julie will be here from 10am until Noon to answer questions and show features of Atomic Learning software. The campus is invited to stop in at any time between 10am and Noon. Seating is limited to ~30 people but people may come and go as they please as there is no formal timed presentation.

Tech Tip: Password Security

For this month Technology Services would like to highlight password security. We will have a display up near the elevators on the first floor of Swenson Hall. Here are some quick tips about passwords to help you keep your accounts safe:

The UW-Superior password security policy requires that your password meets the following criteria:

It must contain at least 7 characters.
It must have at least one upper case letter
It must have at least one lower case letter
It must contain at least one number

These additional tips will help increase the strength of your password for your UW-superior account, or any other account:

Don't use any part of your username, full name, address, birth date, and so on. This data may be readily available to those wishing to do harm.
Don't use English or even words from another language.
Use different kinds of characters in your password such as #@!&.
Change passwords often (every month to six weeks).
Don't write your passwords on a sticky note and post it on your monitor/computer/desk.
Use Passwords for your mobile devices like iPads and smart phones.
Use a different password for each log-in account you have. One for the bank, one for school, one for work, one for facebook, etc...
Don't give your password to others

Protecting Your Privacy - Data Privacy Day

What is Data Privacy Day?

We share information when we socialize, work, text, make calls, shop, bank, browse the web, read online, and study. Data Privacy Day was designed to promote awareness about the many ways personal information is collected, stored, used, and shared, and education about privacy practices that will enable individuals to protect their personal information. We've created a display outside of the Technology Helpdesk in Swenson 1061 to show some of the ways you can keep your personal information safe.

What is Technology Services doing to help protect our data privacy on campus?

Keep a Clean Machine - All campus computers have antivirus software on them to prevent viruses, malware and other online threats. Free antivirus software is available on our website for all student, faculty and staff personal computers.
Protect Your Personal Information - Our campus security settings require a password between 8 and 14 characters with a combination of letters and numbers. We recommend changing your password regularly.
Connect with Care - We've taken measures to secure your personal information - financial information, class schedules, work processes - within E-Hive by making it a secure site ("https://").
Be Web Wise - Technology Services blocks over 100,000 SPAM messages per day, we continually update our blocking tools with industry standard updates. Email and online storage (G: Drive) is backed up every night to a secondary site.

How can we do our parts?

Consider doing some of the following to protect your personal information:

Avoid sharing certain personal information publicly including: your date of birth, home address, phone numbers, social security number, financial information, and travel plans.
When in doubt, throw it out - if you receive emails that implore you to act immediately, offer something that sounds too good to be true, or asks for personal information (passwords, account numbers, etc.) do not respond, delete the email. Use your favorite search engine to search your name and see what kind of information comes up about you.
If you use social networking sites, learn about the privacy settings and use them to control how you share personal information and to define your audience.
If you have a smart phone, understand that the phone contains a host of personal information about you and secure it with a strong passcode or other privacy feature.
Use location based services and features with care, understanding who has access to the information about your whereabouts when you "check in" to various places.

Learn@UWSuperior was upgraded Wednesday, January 11, 2012 - Thursday, January 12, 2012. Some changes you will notice are:

New for Instructors -

Our Fall 2011 Newsletter focused on the changes this upgrade brings.

Dropbox Leave Feedback Redesign

Preview the submitted documents without having to download the file.
Edit the Dropbox folder from this area.
Add/edit a rubric while leaving feedback.
Have rubric comments appear next to the general comments for your students.

Course Home News Changes

New "Got to News Tool" icon has been added that will take you to News management screen where you can make changes to all your news items.
New RSS feed icon that will allow your students to subscribe to your news and view it from outside Learn@UWSuperior with an RSS reader.
The ability to save a news item as a draft for review or to publish it to your Course Home News.
The ability to dismiss news items and return them when the information has been updated or removed by mistake.

Online Rooms (webinar/conferencing program)

Present course materials to students in a live interactive session that can be recorded with audio, chat, video, slide presentations, polling, application sharing and web tours. Some possible uses: virtual office or help sessions, small group project/presentations, advising sessions, guest speakers, lecture capture. Training needs to be completed before online rooms can be added to your course.

New for Students -

Calendar Updates

Be able to monitor your class assignments from one location when your instructors check the "Display in Calendar" box.
Assignments will be color coded by course, making it easier to see which ones belong to which course.
You can add personal tasks to your calendar as reminders.

Course Home News

New RSS feed icon that will allow you to subscribe to your course news and view it from outside Learn@UWSuperior with an RSS reader.

Learn@UWSuperior Login Changes

How you log into Learn@ UWSuperior (D2L) will change after the system upgrade on Thursday, January 12, 2012. If you have a UW-Superior campus username (jdoe1), you will need to use the yellow "UW Campus Account" button. These accounts are generally UW-Superior students, faculty or staff accounts. If you have a specialty or guest username (John.Doe), you will need to use the black "Visitor Account" button. These accounts are generally guest or adjusted roles for existing accounts.

When you click on the "UW Campus Account" button, you will be taken to the Wisconsin Federation Login page for UW-Superior. You will use your campus username and password to enter Learn@ UWSuperior.

When you click on the "Visitor Account" button, you will be taken to the Learn@ UWSuperior Visitor Login page. You will use the username you received from the Learn@ UWSuperior Administrator and password you created.

If you have requested a D2L account for a committee member who is not a UW Superior student, faculty or staff member, please forward this information to them.

Network Upgrade Notice

The Internet Traffic Manager will be upgraded to the latest code revision on 1-10-2012 between 9:00 AM and 10:00 AM.

During this time, the campus may experience brief internet outages.

Wireless Network Upgrades

All campus wireless networks will be unavailable from 9 AM until 12 PM on Tuesday January 3rd for security upgrades.

The wired network in the Residence Halls will also be down during this time for security upgrades.

Learn@UWSuperior Online Rooms Training Session 2

Learn@UW-Superior Online Rooms Training

The Online Rooms tool uses the web conferencing program, BB Collaborate (formally Elluminate), to give instructors the ability to present course materials to their students in live interactive online sessions. These sessions can have audio, text chat, video, slide presentations, and polling as well as web touring and application sharing. This tool is also useful in online advising and tutoring. The tool will become available for use in the Spring 2012 semester, but in order to have access to the tool, you will need to attend the three hour session on learning the Basic and Advanced tools.

This three hour session will be in the Technology Training Room (Swenson 1070)

Learning the Basics:

Creating online rooms
Entering the session
Basic tools and screen orientation
Loading content and using the Whiteboard

Advanced Tools and Features:

Using the participant controls
Using the advanced tools
Polling
Application sharing
Web tours
Creating and using breakout rooms

The training is limited to 8 people, please RSVP to learnadmin@uwsuper.edu by Thursday, January 5th, 2012 if you would like to attend the Online Rooms training. These training sessions are offered on a first come, first serve basis and more sessions will be offered in late February or early March.
