Sarah Palin NYT Lawsuit Dismissed

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Wed, 30 Aug 2017 02:17:00 +0000

Sarah Palin NYT Lawsuit Dismissed - A federal judge on Tuesday tossed out a defamation lawsuit by Sarah Palin against The New York Times, saying the former Alaska governor failed to show the newspaper knew it was publishing false statements in an editorial before quickly correcting them.

The written ruling by Judge Jed Rakoff in Manhattan said the lawsuit seeking unspecified damages "fails on its face to adequately allege actual malice."

The decision came weeks after the onetime Republican vice presidential nominee sued over an editorial titled "America's Lethal Politics." It was published in June after a gunman opened fire on Republican lawmakers in Virginia, wounding U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise.

HTC U11 Ocean

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Sun, 28 May 2017 23:14:00 +0000

HTC U11 Ocean - The latest HTC flagship phone has been announced and it is to be called the HTC U11 Ocean. It has had mixed reviews so far. Some say the hardware is lacking as it is no improvement on any of the other flagships from other manufacturers. Others say it is a great improvement and will sell well.

The hook for the new HTC is the new squeeze gesture. The phone has pressure sensors around the edges so squeezing it with different pressure will make it do different things. This feature seems like more of a gimmick than a reason to buy it. I would imagine most people that buy the phone would barely ever use it. It does have one thing going for it though. The price! It is more than $200 cheaper than the Galaxy S8 or the IPhone 7. Time will tell how popular it will be.

Kraft Brand to Disappear

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Thu, 25 May 2017 10:09:00 +0000

Kraft Brand to Dissapear - Kraft is a brand that has graced the shelves of Australian grocery stores for more than 90 years. Two thirds of our homes include one or more of their products.

Yet, despite it being one of the world’s biggest brands — worth $12 billion globally according to Forbes — by the end of the year it will have disappeared from Australia and New Zealand altogether.

The brand first arrived in Australia in 1926, and the name ‘Kraft’ has adorned everything from Mac & Cheese to Vegemite. But despite it being worth more than Nestle or Kellogs, it’s now headed to the brand bin.

While the products themselves will remain, the Kraft name is being sidelined. This month, Kraft Singles was replaced by UK brand “Dairylea Slices”.

Homeless Man Aided Wounded

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Thu, 25 May 2017 02:35:00 +0000

Homeless Man Aided Wounded - Stephen Jones, 35, was sleeping near Manchester Arena when he heard a loud bang, which he initially believed to be fireworks. In an interview with ITV News, he detailed the aftermath of the deadly attack that left at least 22 dead and dozens injured.

When Jones and his friend saw everyone screaming and running, they began to run with the crowd. But when they realized what was happening, they ran back and saw women and children leaving the arena with "blood throughout the stairs" and victims lying on the ground.
He explained that his instincts led him back inside the building.
"There was a lot of homeless people that stayed there and helped and that's what we done. And obviously when we seen children like that with blood... having to pull nails and stuff out of their arms and I pulled one out of this little girl's face," Jones said.

Jones felt like he had no choice but to help the children who were covered in blood, "crying and screaming."
"If I didn't help, I wouldn't be able to live with myself for walking away and leaving kids like that. The ones that helped were great, we don't normally get on with the police, but I'll give them 100 percent they were there on the scene last night and they were there, they knew what they were doing and all the emergency services were there, they were there in quick time," Jones said.

Credit Card Surcharge Laws Australia

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Mon, 22 May 2017 21:39:00 +0000

Credit Card Surcharge Laws Australia - A new ban stops businesses from charging payment surcharges on credit, debit and prepaid card payments that are excessive. The ACCC will investigate consumer complaints and take enforcement action where necessary.

When you pay a business using certain payment types, for example a credit card, the business incurs costs for processing the payment. These costs are usually paid by the business to its bank. Some businesses include these costs in the price they charge for their goods or services. Others pass the costs on as a payment surcharge.

A payment surcharge is an additional amount charged by a business when you pay for goods or services by one form of payment (e.g. a credit card) rather than another (e.g. cash).

On 25 February 2016 the Competition and Consumer Amendment (Payment Surcharges) Act 2016 became law. It inserted a new part into the CCA banning excessive payment surcharges and provided new powers for the ACCC.

The ban is found in the CCA, and operates in conjunction with a Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) standard.

The purpose of the ban is to stop businesses from charging payment surcharges that are excessive. That is, from charging a customer more than what it costs the business to process the payment.
A business is not required to impose a payment surcharge, but if it chooses to then it is only allowed to pass on to the customer the costs that the business was charged for accepting payment of that payment type.

The ban has a staged introduction. It currently applies to large businesses and will apply to all other businesses from 1 September 2017. A large business is one that satisfies certain revenue, asset or employee thresholds.

There have been recent rumblings about Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson starting a political career and he has made light of this by posting a picture of himself on Instagram with the numbers "2020". All joking aside with the popularity of both The Rock and Tom Hanks, they may have a chance at the presidency.

President Donald Trump Fires FBI Boss

Donald Trump has fired FBI boss James Comey in spectacular fashion with Comey himself saying he only heard about the firing when he saw it on t.v. Speculation has been rife about the reason for the firing but it certainly is interesting that it occured almost immediately after Comey asked for funds to investigate the Russian meddling in the election.

According to the president, Comey was a showboat and was not fit to lead the FBI.

2017 Budget Has Been Announced

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Thu, 11 May 2017 04:33:00 +0000

The budget for the near future has been announced by Liberal party treasurer Scott Morrison with some surprise inclusions. The most shocking being the new levy on the big banks. The new levy is expected to earn the government billions of dollars that will go towards repairing the budget. Understandably, the banks are outraged but it looks like there is little they can do about it. The most likely outcome will be the banks somehow passing on this levy to customers regardless of the amount of warnings the government issues. The second surprise was the increase in the medicare levy resulting in most Australians pays hundreds of dollars more every year. This move will stop the medicare freeze and result in more people paying less out of their pockets for doctors visits.

Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Wed, 08 Aug 2012 13:14:00 +0000

Daniel Day-Lewis as Abraham Lincoln - DreamWorks Studios just announced that Daniel Day-Lewis will take on the role of President Abraham Lincoln in the long-in-development biopic to be directed by Steven Spielberg. Lincoln, which playwright Tony Kushner has adapted from the Doris Kearns Goodwin book Team of Rivals, has been on Spielberg's docket for years, with Liam Neeson once attached to star as the 16th president. Kushner also co-wrote Spielberg's Munich, which earned him an Academy Award nomination. Kathleen Kennedy and Spielberg are producing the project, which the director will begin filming next fall. “Daniel Day-Lewis would have always been counted as one of the greatest of actors, were he from the silent era, the golden age of film or even some time in cinema's distant future," said Spielberg. "I am grateful and inspired that our paths will finally cross with Lincoln." DreamWorks expects to have the film in theaters late in 2012 through Disney's Touchstone label. Day-Lewis most recently starred in the musical Nine and Paul Thomas Anderson's 2007 drama There Will Be Blood, for which he won an Oscar for best actor. Though Day-Lewis is British, it's notable that Raymond Massey, who was Canadian, won the was nominated for a best actor Oscar in 1940 for portraying the famous president in Abe Lincoln in Illinois. "Throughout his career, [Daniel] has been exceptionally selective in his choice of material," said DreamWorks co-chairman and CEO Stacey Snider, "which makes us feel even more fortunate that he has chosen to join with us for Lincoln." Amish Staggering Growth in Midwest

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Wed, 08 Aug 2012 13:02:00 +0000

Amish Staggering Growth in Midwest - The Amish are one of the fastest-growing religious groups in North America, according to a new census by researchers at Ohio State University. The study, released July 27 at the annual meeting of the Rural Sociological Society, suggests a new community sprouting every three and a half weeks. Nearly 250,000 Amish live in the U.S. and Canada, and the population is expected to exceed 1 million around 2050. The growth may not be visible outside Amish country, but the rural settlements definitely see the boom. “This place has grown,” said Daniel Miller, 52, who has spent his life on an Amish settlement here. “It’s because all of the kids.” Many Amish families have multiple children, Miller said, adding that those children often stay in the community and eventually sprout families of their own. There are currently 99 church districts, or communities, in Middlefield, which is east of Cleveland in central Northeast Ohio. Miller said he remembers when there were less than 20. The Amish double their population about every 22 years, said Joseph Donnermeyer, the Ohio State professor who led the census project as part of the recent 2010 U.S. Religion Census. The skyward growth has made Ohio home to more than 60,000 Amish residents — the most in any state. Pennsylvania ranks second with about 59,000 Amish people. Indiana ranks third with about 45,000. Comedian Gallagher Heart Attack

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Sun, 25 Mar 2012 12:57:00 +0000

Comedian Gallagher Heart Attack - Prop comic Gallagher, best known for obliterating watermelons with a sledgehammer, suffered a heart attack on Wednesday night. The 65-year-old was taken by ambulance to a hospital after he complained of having chest pains. Gallagher's manager, Craig Marquado, spoke with CBS 11 of Dallas. Marquado said Gallagher is having "very serious issues with his heart." He expected his client to be in the hospital for an extended period. According to various sources, including TMZ, Gallagher (real name: Leo Anthony Gallagher Jr.) was in a Texas bar when he suddenly collapsed. He was set to perform later that night. This isn't Gallagher's first heart attack. He suffered a minor one onstage last year while performing in Minnesota. Though he was arguably most famous during the '80s, Gallagher remains a well-known comedian. In the '90s, Gallagher's younger brother, Ron Gallagher, began impersonating his big bro and performed a similar comedy routine at clubs. Leo Gallagher sued Ron, who is no longer permitted to impersonate him. Gallagher is a big believer in his own abilities. In 2005, Gallagher gave an interview with the Oregonian in which he ripped on the comedic talents of everyone from Jay Leno to David Letterman, Tom Hanks, and Michael Keaton. Gallagher has come under fire in recent years for onstage rants that some consider to be racist or homophobic. In an article in The Stranger, Seattle writer Lindy West recounts some of the comic's jokes from a 2010 performance, when he raged against the French, transsexuals, gays, Mexicans, and President Obama. Kim Dotcom Appeal

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Tue, 28 Feb 2012 02:59:00 +0000

Kim Dotcom Appeal - Alleged internet pirate Kim Dotcom will appeal today's decision denying him bail, his lawyer says. Dotcom, a German millionaire and founder of file-sharing site Megaupload, was arrested on Friday on behalf of United States authorities, including the FBI, in a police raid at his $30m Coatesville mansion. US authorities were now seeking his extradition. They alleged Dotcom's company breached copyright laws costing copyright owners more than US$500m in what they call the "Mega Conspiracy". The 38-year-old, who was previously convicted of hacking and insider trading, has denied any wrongdoing. Dotcom was today remanded in custody, with judge David McNaughton saying he posed a "significant" flight risk. He will be held until February 22, when extradition papers are expected to be filed. However Dotcom's lawyer, Paul Davison, QC, said that decision would be appealed to the High Court. Davison spoke of the disappointment at the decision. "We were hopeful that the judge would accept our intentions and our arguments and see that there was no risk whatsoever of Kim Dotcom seeking to leave New Zealand. "All of his assets have been frozen, all of his resources have been taken," he said outside court. Kim Dotcom Appeal

Ohio School Shooting

Ohio School Shooting - Authorities said a teen gunman opened fire inside the school cafeteria around 7:30 a.m., fatally wounding one student and seriously injuring four others. The suspect was taken into custody near his car a half-mile from the Cleveland-area school of 1,100 students. Heather Ziska, 17, said she was in the cafeteria when she heard popping noises in the hall. She said she saw a boy she recognized as a fellow student enter the cafeteria and start shooting. "Everybody just started running," said 17-year-old Megan Hennessy, who was in class when she heard loud noises. Hiding in classrooms, frightened students spent more than an hour trying to communicate with the outside world and get reliable information, said senior Matt Goergen, 17, who was in first-period English class when the school went into lockdown. Many in the room didn't believe there was a shooting until "a girl sitting next to me got a call from her dad saying it was real," he said in a text message interview. Sophomore Trevor Miducki, 16, was in the hallway next to the cafeteria when he saw two girls "running down the hallway, just, like, sprinting" from the cafeteria. Locked into his first-period English classroom, Miducki heard sirens outside but wasn't sure what was going on. "We were all wondering what happened," he said. "We were all frantically texting our parents … We were keeping calm, but were all so scared." Ohio School Shooting

Tom Hanks Rita Wilson Married 23 Years - In a town where marriages rarely make it past the one-year mark, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are one of those couples that make celebrity marriages seem pretty awesome. They’ve been married for over 23 years now--which is like 5 lifetimes in Hollywood--and admit they fall more in love with each other every day. So what’s their secret to maintaining such a long, healthy relationship in this town? "We want to be married to each other,” Rita confessed to Hollyscoop at the Larry Crowne movie premiere in Hollywood. She added, “I think that's very, very important [to want to be married]. You got to want to be married to the person you're married to. We still like each other a lot." Tom was previously married to Samantha Lewes in 1978 but began an affair with future wife Rita Wilson while they were filming Volunteers. I asked Rita if it was the real thing for her, and it just couldn't be denied." Tom Hanks Rita Wilson Married 23 Years

Dolly Parton Whitney Houston

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Tue, 14 Feb 2012 10:28:00 +0000

Dolly Parton Whitney Houston - Dolly Parton paid tribute to Whitney Houston, the deceased pop diva who catapulted her song “I Will Always Love You” to a global phenomenon, by citing the ballad they both made famous. “Mine is only one of the millions of hearts broken over the death of Whitney Houston,” Parton said in a statement Saturday. “I will always be grateful and in awe of the wonderful performance she did on my song, and I can truly say from the bottom of my heart, ‘Whitney, I will always love you. You will be missed.’” Houston died Saturday at the age of 48. The singer had a well-chronicled struggle with substance abuse and drugs. Also read: Whitney Houston Dead at 48 Parton wrote “I Will Always Love You” in 1973. The song chronicled her split with her collaborator Porter Wagoner. The country star’s version rose to first place on the Billboard Hot Country Songs and was later re-recorded for the soundtrack of her film “The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.” However, it took Houston to make the ballad a true crossover hit. The song was featured prominently in the 1992 film “The Bodyguard,” which marked Houston’s film debut. It would break records to spend 14 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, and would become perhaps Houston’s best known torch song. Dolly Parton Whitney Houston

Bon Iver Best New Artist

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Tue, 14 Feb 2012 10:27:00 +0000

Bon Iver Best New Artist - Like Arcade Fire's surprise Album of the Year win at last year's Grammys, Bon Iver taking home Best New Artist on Sunday night (February 12) over more established artists like Nicki Minaj was bound to raise a few eyebrows. When you asked "Who are Arcade Fire?" in 2012, we had you covered, and we've been following Wisconsin singer Justin Vernon (the man behind Bon Iver) for quite some time — long before he snagged BNA and Best Alternative Album at this year's ceremony. Quite the pleasant surprise for the under-the-radar folk singer, who recently became the face of a Bushmills whiskey ad to boot. Bon Iver's second, self-titled disc was released in early 2011 but is still clearly getting the attention it deserves. He may have made a few public derogatory comments about the Grammy Awards ceremony itself, but that didn't sway the voters or the singer from showing up. To put his "underground" status into perspective: Bon Iver debuted at #2 in June 2011 on sales of just under 104,000, but its total album sales to date (just over 357,000) are nothing compared to a powerhouse-seller like Adele's 21. A helpful primer on Justin Vernon/ Bon Iver: The former All-State high school football star and World Religion college major began his career playing in the jazzy party band Mount Vernon, which transitioned into DeYarmond Edison, formed with some old high school pals who all moved to North Carolina in 2005 to spread their musical wings. A year later, things fell apart with his band and his girlfriend, just as he was laid low by a vicious bout of mono, driving Vernon back to Eau Claire for some physical and psychic healing. Whitneys Mother Cissy

noreply@blogger.com (TechnologySlice) — Tue, 14 Feb 2012 10:26:00 +0000

Whitneys Mother Cissy - Whitney Houston's mother, Cissy Houston has expressed her devastation at the loss of her daughter, who died Saturday afternoon as she was preparing to attend a pre-Grammy Awards party in California. She described the death of her daughter as an "unimaginable tragedy." "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Whitney," the gospel singer said in a statement according to OnTheRedCarpet.com. "This is an unimaginable tragedy and we will miss her terribly. We appreciate the outpouring of love and support from her fans and friends." The 78-year-old mother has reported that she talked to her daughter just half an hour before she was found unconscious in a hotel room bath tub. It has also been reported that Houston talked to her cousin Dionne Warwick just several hours earlier to confirm seating arrangements at that evening's party, according to TMZ. However, it was to be a party that Houston would never attend, and the pop icon was later pronounced dead at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, California on Saturday, Feb. 11. Houston had a well-documented fight with drug and alcohol abuse over the years, and she was in rehab just in May of last year following a relapse to her old addictions. But she was reported to have been healthy in the days prior to her death, and just two days before tragedy struck she gave what became her final performance, singing "Yes Jesus Loves Me" at an LA nightclub. Bobby Brown, Houston's ex-husband, who was on a reunion tour with New Edition, is reportedly devastated at the news. He took to the stage Saturday night, breaking into tears at one point, in an emotional performance. Whitneys Mother Cissy
