The advantages of using OpenAds as an ad server, from an OpenAds fan who has used the product for a while.

If you are using more than just one or two advertising partners, you know managing advertising is not an easy task. It takes time to put up new ads, take down non-performing ads, check results, etc. Back in SES San Jose 2007, I heard a couple of respected people in the search engine industry recommending OpenAds as the ad server of choice. So I went ahead and gave it a try.

I am very pleased with what OpenAds has delivered for me. Below are some of the features I find most useful with OpenAds:

Easily add and delete new advertisers, as well as turning on and turning off specific ads. You can do all of the above without modifying the source code of your website.

Ability to get ad stats. For those involved with multiple ad networks, you know how much time it takes to get impressions and CTR data from multiple sources. If you serve all your ads through OpenAds, you’ll be able to view impressions, clicks, and CTR data for all your ads.

Ability to randomly serve up ads based on pre-determined frequencies. Randomizing ads helps prevent ad blindness. It’s possible to do this without an ad server, but it’s a tedious and extremely time-consuming task. With OpenAds, this can be done quickly.

Easy to set up. I was able to set up OpenAds quickly.

Ability to geo-target. If you include geo-country mapping data, you will be able to geo-target the ads you serve in a single place.

Currently, OpenAds is free. If you have multiple sites, or if you use multiple advertisers, or if you just simply want to have more control of how ads show up in your site, you should give OpenAds a try.

The Importance of Diversification

Having multiple types of income and multiple websites will alleviate the risk of losing your online income substantially.

We often hear about someone making such and such amount of money from one particular form of advertising, or from one particular web site. This is all great. However, assuming that publisher does not have another income stream (whether it be a different website or a different method of income), that publisher does run the risk of having that single site / single monetization mechanism taken away from him/her. What if someone outranks you in search engines and you lose half of your traffic? What if the program you have been relying on all of a sudden decide to cancel your account? Or simply disappeared? Do you have a way to react to these types of events?

There are two dimensions to diversification. The first one is the type of income. In the English-speaking world, there are many options. There is contextual advertising like Google Adsense / YPN, there is display advertising, there are affiliate programs, there are even other types of less-traditional programs like ReviewMe, PayPerPost, TextLinkAds, and job boards. To get a flavor of the various types of monetization opportunities, visit a couple of “make money online” blogs, and you’ll see what’s out there.

The second dimension is the site. Instead of relying primarily on a single site for all, or most, of your income, you should branch out and have multiple sites. This way, if something bad happens to one of your sites (SERP drop, web host going down, etc), it’s not catastrophic to your income.

Review of Yaro Starak's Blog Profits Blueprint Ebook.

I came upon Yaro Starak’s recently released free ebook called Blog Profits Blueprint. Yaro Starak is an entrepreneur from Australia, and his blog, Entrepreneur’s Journey, enjoys a wide readership.

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book. Yaro didn’t touch on the technical aspects of blogging at all (i.e., what Wordpress plugins to use, etc). Instead, he laid out steps for selecting topics, writing posts, and blog marketing.

One of the concepts he discussed was “stream” vs. “river” when it comes to blog marketing. Basically, these are two big buckets of marketing, with those falling under the “streams” category generating a few new readers at a time, and those falling under the “river” category capable of generating tens, hundreds, or even more new readers at a time. While I already knew the individual techniques he mentioned, I had never thought about grouping these techniques in these buckets, and it is very useful in terms of helping me rethink what my own blog marketing strategies should be.

He also touched on the monetization aspects of blogging. What I agreed most is his statement that “recursive affiliate income is the holy grail of blog income”. With blogging, if you don’t continue to churn out new posts, readers will most likely stop visiting your blog. With recursive affiliate income, you will keep earning, even after you have stopped blogging altogether.

Yaro has an upcoming blog mentoring program, where he will teach you to earn a full-time income from part-time blogging. Those who are interested should check out BlogMastermind.com for more details.

Regardless of whether you are a beginner just thinking about blogging, or you have been blogging for a while, Blog Profits Blueprint will help you learn something new.

Website monetization strategy: Adding a job board. This post describes job search sites offering this type of program to publishers, and my experience so far.

Inspired by Dosh Dosh, I decided to look into setting up a job board for some of my sites.

The first thing I did was to find out who is offering this type of affiliate program. Dosh Dosh mentioned Job-a-matic, Job Thread, and Job Coins. I also remembers that Techcrunch has its own job board, so I went and found out that Edgeio also offers this type of program. Finally, I went through the big job sites such as CareerBuilder, Monster, and Hotjobs, and found that, even though most of them do offer an affiliate program, only one of them has a job board functionality, and that’s indeed.com. So, the initial list of candidates are: Job-a-matic, Job Thread, Job Coins, Edgeio, and Indeed.com.

As I looked more closer into how the site (demo and live) looked, it became apparent to me that the key criteria for me would be the ability to backfill jobs. That means that, if no one has yet posted a job to my job board, the job site would be able to show a list of jobs so that the board doesn’t look bare. Based on that, I narrowed down my choice to Job-a-matic and Indeed.com. Both have plenty of jobs to backfill.

Between the two, I choose to go first with Indeed.com because it has several ways to monetize: In addition to the job board, site owners can create a jobroll and display it on their site. Indeed.com will populate the jobroll with sponsored listings, so that it’s a PPC model. Site owners can also put search boxes and text links on the site. Finally, Indeed.com offers an XML API for advanced use.

I have been using Indeed.com for about two weeks now, and the results are encouraging — no job signups yet, but there are clicks. Based on what I have seen so far, this is definitely a program worth trying out for, especially if you have a tech audience.
