In the registry, you need to change:

You receive 'Error 1718. File FileName was rejected by digital signature policy' when you attempt to install a large Windows Installer package or patch on Windows Server 2003?

When you attempt to install a large .msi package or .msp package on Windows Server 2003, you receive:

Error 1718. File was rejected by digital signature policy.

This behavior occurs if the server has insufficient contiguous memory to verify that the package is correctly signed.

To workaround this behavior:

01. Start / Run / control admintools / OK.

02. Double-click Local Security Policy.

03. Expand Software Restriction Policies. If no software restrictions are displayed, right-click Software Restriction Policies and press Create New Policy.

04. Double-click the Enforcement Object Type in the right hand pane.

05. Check the All users except local administrators radial button and press OK.

06. Shutdown and restart your server.

07. Install the package while logged on as a user who is a member of the local Administrators group.

08. Repeat steps 1 - 4.

09. Check the All users radial button and press OK.

10. Shutdown and restart your server.

NOTE: This tip applies to Windows XP also.

If you open Windows Explorer in Windows 7, you can right click on its icon in the taskbar and bring up its jump list. You will see 'frequent' folder locations as well as locations you've already 'pinned.' If a folder you would like to be pin is not appearing the frequent list, navigate via 'Computer' to its folder location. Right-Click and drag the intended folder to the taskbar until you see 'pin to Windows Explorer.'

Offline Files Sync When File Server Changes

If you use the offline files feature in windows to synchronize files from a remote file server/location to the local disk, there is an issue if the remote location changes. Windows for some reason continues to try to sync to the old location but generates a failure warning, while successfully syncing from the new location. Turning off and back on offline file mode does not solve the issue.

You need to re-initialize the offline files cache and database:

VNC Server on Windows Vista

After installing VNC (Server) on a Vista machine in service mode, I was unable to connect to it on the local LAN via a wifi-connected Vista laptop. VNC Viewer would give me a "connection closed unexpectedly" error. Both machines had the Vista firewall disabled. The event viewer on the machine running VNC Server had the following entry:

Unable to connect session to Console: Access is denied.

The failure is due to security restrictions of Session 0 in Windows Vista. For more on Session 0 see here.

The workaround is to run VNC Server not as a service, but in User mode instead. You can add the shortcut of RealVNC User mode to your startup entries to ensure it starts for every boot.

Installing SSL Certs in Vista

Recently I had a user who with his new Vista laptop wanted to access his exchange account via Outlook using RPC over HTTP. After installing our server's SSL cert it would still not connect. The problem is that Vista's automatic certificate installtion does not put it in the Trusted Root Certificate Store. Therefore when first installing the cert, click the Install Certificate button, and then click next, then choose Place all certificates in the following store and choose Trusted Root Certification Authorities.

This was only necessary in Vista, but for XP, the automatic installation worked fine.
