This is how verizon tortures (tests) Phones and Phablets

2014-12-08T08:51:00.002+05:30

We know Verizon does everything possible to test its network of field - but it turns out that the vehicle is also quite difficult for all devices offered. Located in the cozy Bedminster, New Jersey is Verizon laboratories where new phones Submit a battery of techniques of creative torture - and have seen what Samsung and Apple put their own devices through - to ensure they are making snuff. If they survive, they do so in the company network. Otherwise, they are sent back from whence they came (with lots of notes to the manufacturer). And if you were wondering, yes, Verizon does its best to recreate all the silly ways we destroy our phones. A unique work of the testing machine is dropping phones feet high in almost all angles. (We also learned that phablets get tested only a half meter

Project Ara brings the modular smartphone from concept to a reality

2014-04-16T10:31:00.003+05:30

The night before Google Advanced Technology and Projects supposed (ATAP ) division to show the prototype and Ara project is only functional to a room full of eager developers, someone dropped the phone and broke the screen . In any other product reveals , this worst-case scenario would be a nightmare come true . Not Google : The company made lemonade from a lemon to make it a selling point for the modular smartphone. Within a year , the painful situations like this could be easily solved by simply buying a new screen and redemption of the creek.

Not that it would have made much difference if last night fiasco never happened. Those attending the developer conference Ara Project this week would not have been able to start the prototype and play around with it , like any typical smartphone - in this case, "functional " is not the same as " work " - but at least it would have made for a better presentation. Regardless of how it looked , however , have been able to handle the prototype briefly Ara Project and some of the first modules . To be clear , this is a very early model and there is a long way to go before it sees the light of day , but at least you can get a good picture of what is to come in the coming years as Ara continues to prepare to launch .

Ara Project brings modular smartphone concept to reality ; almost looks like it should have done a cameo in the movie Lego . The Ara include a metal endoskeleton , which is essentially the backbone of the phone, and slots for replaceable components known as modules , which are much like tiles . ( If you remember from Windows Phone when looking at the back , it will not be the first. ) Tiles These modules can include anything that makes your phone tick (CPU , RAM , WiFi, power connector, band base, screen and battery, for example), as well as lots of other features like the camera , speakers and storage space . Each module is connected to the other parts working through capacitive interconnections , which are essentially wireless pads that are smaller than standard pins . Electro magnets not only hold the modules in place, but also act as a toggle switch that allows you to easily turn the element on and off. As you can already imagine, all modules can be exchanged at your convenience. ATAP Ara plans to offer three different sizes, ranging from a choice of six smaller modules for a widescreen model with more modules.

At first glance, it almost sounds like this project only attract the same consumers who enjoy building their own computers from scratch , but insists that ATAP will transform emerging markets - more specifically , the five billion people on Earth who own feature phones , but can not afford to get something more expensive. Today, the division announced plans to send a " Grey Cell " which is simply a device that comes pre-packaged with only one screen , processor and Wi -Fi module. From there , users can easily add and remove components as they see fit . It will be relatively cheap - the product cost $ 50 for Google , but the retail price has not yet been determined - and users on a tight budget can easily add or upgrade modules provided they can afford to do so.

Longevity is another important factor ; While most smartphones today can barely make it through a two-year contract , Ara is intended to last for several years. This means it will probably be much less expensive in the long run , and fewer phones will end up in dumpsters .
According ATAP , a device such as Ara also bring the power of choice to the consumer. A matter of sacrificing some features for others - Buying a smartphone often feels like a game of chance. With Ara , you will finally be able to determine exactly what kind of things you want on your phone. In essence , it appears that Google is hoping to " disrupt " the traditional phone manufacturers like Samsung, HTC and LG ( and carriers ) , as the average consumer would not have to go through these companies to buy a phone more .

When it comes to what kind of modules would be available , the sky is the limit. ATAP has already begun to offer a development kit for everyone who wants to build own modules , so there are a lot of possible use cases. One example shown was a pulse oximeter , which appears in a long module extending beyond the rest of the chassis of the phone; there was a thin camera module that could easily be exchanged with various lenses ; until we heard developers since launched the idea of a card reader like a backpack Square credit. Starting this week, is now up these partners and developers to explore space and find ways to make Ara success.

This all sounds fine and dandy , but not without a setback or two. Despite the efforts of the ATAP is even bigger , heavier and thicker than the smartphone run-of -the -mill, and there are some concerns with the efficiency of the battery (though the battery capacity exchange hot certainly helps ) . Naturally, the team understands that these issues could be a turnoff for potential buyers, so we hope to solve these problems by the time the next prototype, returns later this year.

Ara Project is halfway through a two-year mission . The deadline is a driving motivation for the handful of full-time employees and contractors involved in the project, and that the time limit was raised several times during today's conference . No time for delays , which makes this project even more exciting - if it 's going to happen , you have to be ready to go next year . ATAP is not only facing a ticking clock , but it is also doing the same with a pretty strong do list : You attract developers , convincing demonstrations to scale and get consumers interested in running the risk of a completely new type of smartphone. It will not be easy, but the road is fascinating to watch.

The Heartbleed bug is affecting routers, Juniper Networks and Cisco Systems are working on patches

2014-04-11T07:30:00.001+05:30

Read our primer Heart-bleed defense ? Well, but the fight for privacy is not over yet : you may need to replace your router , too. Cisco Systems and Juniper Networks have announced that Heartbleed failure - a failure in OpenSSL that allows attackers to bypass common security protocols - has found its networking products . This news is not too surprising , since any device using an older version of SSL is vulnerable, but checking these devices for failure is a laborious process . Naturally , devices that do not use the affected versions of OpenSSL (like Linksys routers) are not affected . Both companies are investigating their product libraries to compile lists of affected devices. You can find the lists here, here ( by Juniper Networks) and here ( Cisco Systems). If one of the devices listed , sit tight and check for updates ; Both companies say they are working on patches.

Google teased with a behind the scenes Ara Project progress

2014-04-10T08:37:00.000+05:30

Google teased us with a behind the scenes Ara Project progress last week, and now it is giving aspiring module manufacturers some meat to dig into your new module Developers Kit . As the name implies, this version really is not for the laity : it is a set of guidelines on how these bits should look and interact with the endo ( pet name of Google for skeletons phone pop these modules ) with diagrams and code samples to play with .

picture taken from Engadget

We knew that there would be three different sizes endoscopy , but Google is also great with the modules that protrude from the bottom or back of the phone , like the pulse oximeter (below) the company has been mentioning for months. It seems a bit odd that Google does not want manufacturers developing modules that could stick out a hand phone Ara , but we're guessing it is a concession made by the gripping ability .
Then there is the small matter of how people really going to be able to order our phone parts . Google guidelines make mention of an online marketplace ( somewhere in the Play Store , probably) , where we can choose our set pieces and dreamy devices . The bit of the sales of this equation has not been fully realized yet , but folks in Mountain View still has time to iron out . The complete document is 81 pages and a bit more accessible than it sounds - you can download the full package here if you're curious . The first of three developer conferences Ara starts next week too, so do not fear : the best is definitely yet to come .

Look at Google's build-your-own-smartphone project

2014-04-05T08:45:00.000+05:30

Ara Project has just skyrocketed in importance from Google Unloaded Motorola earlier this year, and we are now getting a fresh look at the work in progress . The Phonebloks team just released a video showing the progress of Google and its partners have made in modular smart phones, and things are coming along as fast as expected .

While this is ostensibly a video to meet and greet some of the people who work for the cause, there are still some parts to look Tantalizing . It gives us a quick look at how the components such as processors and camera modules are held in place by means of electromagnets - slide into place easily , and are locked and unlocked with a quick burst of tension that will ultimately to be controlled with an application. For a few moments , we also get a look at the three different endo-skeletons those parts that come in side by side ... if only in the form of representation. The main means of communication is the models that have been getting all the attention lately, but the endo-phablet size looks to support 9 modules on the back and miniature models that could be sold for around $ 50 can handle at least 6 . Ara meat not enough for you? Fear not : the first Ara Developers Conference will be held on April 15 , so expect most secret project soon to be spilled .

2014-03-26T09:29:00.000+05:30

Featuring a rare interview in the run up to another legal battle between Samsung and Apple, the chief engineer behind the iPhone has explained where it all began , part of Apple's plan to communicate how he pioneered the original iPhone . Speaking to the Wall Street Journal explained how the secret purple iPhone project brought to life. At some point, the former head of Apple told him directly : the team had two weeks or assigned the project elsewhere. " Steve had almost had to ... I wanted big ideas and larger concepts. " In the end , the team of " surprisingly small " had outlined a touchscreen phone with beat- unlock , no physical keyboard and all functions music playback of iPod series from the company. Software first tests were conducted in a plastic touch screen connected to a desktop Mac dated [ see below ] - an effort to emulate a low-power mobile processor .

Greg Christie had to make presentations twice a month directly to Steve Jobs, and once it was decided that this was going to be something real , apparently , that's when the real work began . A " marathon two and a half years," where Jobs obsessed over every detail. In the six months between revealing the iPhone and go on sale , the changes did not stop with a split screen view for email that shows both the message and the sender information discarded before its release . TCL launching the OCTA core 2GHz Processor Phone ‘Idol X+’

2013-12-27T11:32:00.001+05:30

TCL electronics in China -- whose products are better known under the Alcatel brand in many other countries -- have gone ahead and launched a new phone called the Idol X+ is pretty much an updated version of the already impressive Idol X, with the highlight being it's the first device to carry the 2GHz bin of the octa-core MT6592SoC (with 2GB RAM). Additionally, you'll find a familiar 5-inch 1080p IPS display within a slimmer 1.9mm bezel, plus a 13-megapixel f/2.0 camera on the back. Due to the larger 2,500mAh battery, the body is now slightly thicker at 7.9mm, but it's actually not that much different from when we saw a prototype earlier.

For a flagship Android phone that costs just about US$330 unsubsidized, it's pretty bold of TCL to also include a Bluetooth activity plus sleep tracker. This Boom Band is essentially a little nugget that sits inside a plastic wristband (available in several colors), and it can double as a proximity alarm in case you accidentally leave your phone behind. It naturally has a companion app that lets you track your performance, and should you wish to, you can also show off your stats to friends.

There's no word on whether non-China markets will get the same package branded by Alcatel, but if you already reside in China, you can head to JD.com and order one on January 15th.

Nokia Lumia 1020 Review

2013-09-19T08:41:00.003+05:30

Lumia The Nokia 1020 is a phone we've been anticipating for a long time. It is a Windows 8 mobile phone camera which uses similar technology to the Nokia 808 PureView. That phone had an amazing camera, but was bought by only a handful, with its garbage Symbian OS and that no network wanted to stock up on it.

The Nokia Lumia 1020 is not quite the perfect flagship, but for those who care to have a good handle on the way the camera to whip out whenever he needs is a cracking phone. Read more...

iPhone 5S Review

2013-09-18T17:51:00.001+05:30

With vision. It is ironic that Apple marketing slogan for the iPhone 5s invites us to look to the future, when, from the outside, the device looks like a carbon copy of last year's model, the iPhone 5. But like any other iPhone odd years - the version "S", if you will - the 5s plays the card of Transformers, offering more than it seems.

Though is easy to discard this phone so repetitive, 5s is the first smartphone the full support of 64 bits and a capacitive fingerprint sensor, and also comes with a fresh version, iOS renewed. This might not matter to the people who were satisfied with the status quo, but it matters a lot to Apple - and the future of the company and - especially if the company wants to fend off an increasingly fierce pack of competitors. But it's a phone "vision" investment worth today? I, with some major improvements inside.

Your Finger Must be “Alive” For Your iPhone5S to be Unlocked

2013-09-18T11:26:00.002+05:30

Although probably not something that worries most of us , some people worry that there is an inherent flaw in the system of fingerprint authentication next iPhone 5S : a thief could cut your finger and use the accessory to unlock the device. Once inside, you can access third-party applications and potentially protected into one bank account .

After all , is not the first time something like this has happened . Years ago, a man lost a finger to a gang of car thieves in Malaysia who were trying to start their fingerprint safe Mercedes S Class sedan.

A second concern is that if the fingerprint validation becomes the industry standard , then once yours is stolen , there's nothing you can really do about it. At least with an access code , you can make a new one after it was committed , an option that clearly does not exist in some areas of the body.

Despite these concerns , Apple has informed users that their fingers are safe. Unlike traditional scanners that work alone optics, the iPhone 5S often use radio scanners to probe beneath the layer of dead skin that is on the outside . To summarize, the finger should be "alive" for the phone to be unlocked , a separate appendix or a plastic model requires not do the trick .

Sebastien Taveau , CTO fingerprint sensor supplier Validity Sensors , told Mashable, "The technology is built in such a way that the image has to be taken from a live finger . Nobody wants to talk about bio-metrics severed fingers and bodies , but at the end of the day we are to remove the fears of consumers and make sure they understand that a broken finger will not work " .

Of course , there are many other ways that a thief could break into an iPhone. The most obvious method would force someone to unlock the smartphone themselves , potentially using a firearm as an effective motivational tool .

Google+ Ready for Deployment of Photo Editing tools "SNAPSEED" on the Desktop

2013-09-16T10:16:00.003+05:30

Back in March, Google brought Snapseed photo editing capabilities to their Google+ Android and iOS apps, and now the company is taking the editing tools for the desktop.

The full feature set is only available through the Chrome browser and will feature many of the options that would probably expect including things like filters, auto settings to improve and selective editing. Selective adjustment allows you to separate parts of an image and edit individually. The desktop edition will come with filters Snapseed as Vintage, Drama, Retrolux and White and Black, as well as the ability to add frames and other options-like vignette.

The feature set will be powered by technology of Google Chrome Native Client Company introduced two years ago, which allows developers to easily port code in the browser.

As mentioned above, those who are not using Chrome will not have access to the complete set of tools, only the staple crop and rotate functions. It seems that Google even set these features to make them a little easier to use and more accessible.

New features are rolled Snapseed slowly in the coming weeks, in a normal way of Google. Once the set of features is available to you, you will see the new editing tools by simply selecting an image in your mind of Google + and hit edit.

Nokia Lumia 1520 to Ship With Huge Battery

2013-09-14T09:59:00.002+05:30

Your awesome smartphone’s awesomeness is often cracked by its somewhat-less-than-awesome battery. Nokia has decided that it’s going to make sure that isn’t a problem with the Lumia 1520, which will reportedly ship with a huge 3400mAh battery.

That could make the Lumia 1520 a little on the heavy side compared to other phones on the market. People will care? Probably not. It's hard to imagine anyone being surprised by a 6-inch device slightly heavy. People will buy the Lumia 1520 due to its size, and perhaps in spite of it, if you are looking for a team with very good time out.
We'll know for sure if the 3400mAh battery is part of the spec sheet on 26 September 1520. That is the date of Nokia recently slapped invitations to the tech press. The big reveal is coming out in New York, despite a lot of other details about the new Lumia already leaked.
The biggest Lumia is still expected to ship with 800 Snapdragon processor, 32GB of internal storage, a full HD 1080p, 16MP camera looking back PureView.
Many of these details have come from @ evleaks, whom he or she has been repeatedly shown to be a source of high precision pre-release information. It all adds up to make the 1520 a phone Lumia seriously interesting ... for some.

Apple's iPhone 5S Coming With Finger Print Sensor

2013-09-12T07:54:00.001+05:30

The iPhone 5S looks almost exactly like the previous one , but with some improvements thrown in. Here the star of the show is the bio metric fingerprint sensor highly anticipated Apple brand Touch ID .

Touch ID allows you to use your fingerprint to unlock the iPhone 5S . Layers on the start button (which is now covered with sapphire, a stainless steel ring around it) , you just press the thumb is not short, and the phone down virtual drawbridge and let in anyone without your footprint digital will be out of luck. It is a very good combination of safety and comfort .

You can also use Touch ID for iTunes purchases ( no other charges that seem to be supported yet) .
Touch ID may be the iPhone 5 s ' marquee attraction, but not the only update. The new iPhone also gets a speed boost , courtesy of the new system - on-a- chip Apple A7 . Dual core remains , but now is 64 bits , the first of its kind in a smartphone. iOS 7 also has been updated to run 32 -bit and 64-bit . According to Apple , the processor and the graphics on the A7 are about two times faster than the iPhone 5. Epic Games Infinity Blade 3 demos (apparently , the last of the trilogy ) to help display graphics of the new chip.

Apple also added a separate chip dedicated to tracking motion sensors , designated M7 . The company says the new chip to measure if you are exercising, walking or driving . It means opening the door to a new generation of fitness applications . Third-party applications can access sensor data on the M7 .

iPhone 5S The camera also has a higher than last year's model . There is 8 megapixels, but - like the HTC One - the pixels are now bigger. " Pixels bigger to take better pictures ," said Phil Schiller of Apple . The camera also adds auto white balance and auto exposure levels , and has a new flash that Apple nicknamed " true tone " , which aims to balance the color tones . The camera of 5 years ' collects some digital image stabilization too.

The camera also now used burst mode to take a series of photos, iOS and automatically chooses the sharpest of use. It also records video in slow motion at 120 frames per second.

Apple does not ignore the aesthetic either. Although 5S sees everything as the iPhone 5 , which is also available in a couple of new colors. A well-filtered gold iPhone 5S white model joins the family . It also appears that " gray space " is a new variation on last year's " black and slate " in the lineup iPhone.
Some companies like to publicize new products dramatically, only to leave pricing and release date in the air , to be determined at a later date . Not Apple . The iPhone 5S reported on September 20 . As of now , does not seem to be available pre - order soon. It will be priced at U.S. $ 200 (for the 16GB model ) , with a new two-year contract .
