The video has a lot of interesting visuals and tells a story, which I’d like to analyze in more detail in a future post. We see the girls in various outfits, and in some scenes, the same member appears in two versions—facing herself. There are also some intriguing shots that flash by quickly, like the part where SHIZUKU is on the floor under a table—well, I’m pretty sure it’s her, but we only see the legs.

The music is really good. At first, I thought it was missing a bit of punch, but by the end it had won me over. After listening a few times, I’m sure it’s going to be stuck in my head all day.

Although I plan to write a more detailed post analyzing the song and the video, for now here’s an insane amount of screenshots from the MV.

Both songs from this single had already been released digitally. Good Job! came out on April 28, along with its music video on YouTube. YAKIMOCHI was released digitally on June 11, but its music video was only published a few days ago, coinciding with the announcement of the new CD.

According to the description of the video on YouTube, the song is about “that annoying but adorable feeling of jealousy.” Apparently, the title YAKIMOCHI itself means jealousy. A new Japanese word learned today. But that’s not all—each member of the group shared a short comment in the description with their thoughts on the song.

Here’s a summary of each member’s message:

Ayumu Okuda (奥田彩友)

She loves the puffy cheeks that look like mochi in the music video and wonders if everyone feels the same way when they’re jealous. She invites fans to enjoy that squishy, adorable feeling together with her—a play on the word mochi and the song’s cuteness.

Yui Otoi (音井結衣)

The song expresses a love so strong it makes her a little jealous. It’s full of kawaii charm, and she wants fans to see and fall in love with all the jealous little sides of the members.

Natsuka Kurita (栗田なつか)

She points out that not only the sparkly, cute parts but also the sulky, jealous moments are lovable. She asks fans to pay attention to that too. Also, she mentions that the singing in this track is closer to speaking, showing a different side of the group.

Rise Shiokawa (塩川莉世)

She’s happy that YAKIMOCHI is finally out and feels the MV is packed with SWEET STEADY’s cuteness. She jokes that fans shouldn’t make them jealous and should keep their eyes on the group only.

Mayumi Shiraishi (白石まゆみ)

She says all the members are cutely jealous this time. She encourages fans to share their favorite scenes. And even though the song is called YAKIMOCHI, she says, “Don’t make us jealous, okay?”

Nagisa Shoji (庄司なぎさ)

She asks fans to pay attention to the cute jealous reactions the members show toward each other. She also mentions they’re all looking forward to comments, so fans should share their impressions and favorite moments.

Sakina Yamauchi (山内咲奈)

She jokes that making them jealous is NG (not allowed), but fans should enjoy all the adorable jealous expressions in the video. She hopes everyone falls in love with YAKIMOCHI.

The group’s first physical single, Pajama Party! / Diamond Days (ぱじゃまぱーてぃー！ / ダイヤモンドデイズ), was released in December last year. Besides the songs from these two singles, SWEET STEADY has also released several digital singles. But fans had to wait more than half a year for this new physical release.

虹のコンキスタドール「Boom！Boom！サマーっ♡」（虹コン）/Niji No Conquistador

In past years, the single often came out long after the music video, but this time it seems to be digital-only—at least I haven’t found any info about a physical version. You can get the song at the usual sites, including Amazon, iTunes, and Spotify:

2zicon never misses with their summer singles. Since 2015’s THE Uchouten Summer!!, they’ve released 11 of them, year after year. Interestingly, even the thumbnails have been consistent—Nemoto Nagi appeared in each one until her graduation, and now Ishihama Mei is the face of their summer thumbnails every year.

The song is just as upbeat and catchy as always, and the music video benefits from both the members’ charm and the gorgeous beaches of Okinawa. This time around, the girls travel in a pair of funny-looking compact cars—two Mini Cooper S convertibles, one blue and one yellow. Honestly, it would’ve been hilarious (and possibly illegal) to see all 12 members squeezed into one of those tiny cars, lol. We see them driving along a scenic road and then crossing a super long bridge.

When they arrive at the beach, they seem to encounter a group of local girls dressed in more colorful, tropical outfits—but it turns out it’s just them again. Each member wears three different outfits throughout the video, plus the uniform they wear in the second half when they perform on a stage next to taiko drummers. By the end, they’re all playing different sizes of drums themselves.

The video is in glorious 4K. I hadn’t realized when they started uploading in that resolution, but the first summer video in 4K seems to be Kimi wa Natsu no Rainbow (キミは夏のレインボー！) from 2022—also the first to feature Ishihama Mei.

Oddly enough, Kimi wa Natsu no Rainbow was also the first summer single not to hit one million views on YouTube. I wonder if that’s part of the reason there doesn’t seem to be a physical release this year. With so many graduations over these 12 years, the group looks very different from their early days, even though most of the first four generations (except the third) still have at least one active member.

Personally, I think the two most important graduations were first: when Nemoto Nagi and Matoba Karin graduated together (though Karin later returned and is still in the group); and more recently: the simultaneous graduation of Tsurumi Moe, Nakamura Akari, and Shimizu Riko. That really changed how the group looks today.

I discovered Nijicon about one year before Yamamoto Rio joined. After that, the lineup stayed stable for almost three years. That was when they introduced color assignments and officially named a group leader (the second one—nobody seems to talk about the first, and I have no idea why). But in the last two years, while I’ve been too busy to follow lineup changes, several new members have come and gone—some I never even got to know.

One of the newer members looked familiar to me until I realized she used to be in YUION. Apparently, YUION is no more, and Aoyama Uta (青山詩) joined Nijicon just this March. I’m glad—Uta was my favorite in YUION WEST.

Sometimes it feels like idol groups can’t avoid turning into revolving doors. Even so, I’m hoping the future brings Nijicon a more stable and long-lasting era, with fewer graduations.

Strangely, this first video doesn’t really feel like an introduction video. And in fact, it isn’t—before it, she uploaded a few shorts, which I’m not counting as full videos. I think they were previews of the full-length videos she uploads later. In this one, Mai picks strawberries from the Echigohime variety, which are large, sweet strawberries considered a specialty of Niigata, according to the video description.

The second video was uploaded on May 20 and opens with Mai, makeup-free and mask-free, standing at the door of what I believe is a hotel, watching the rain. She smiles proudly when saying she’s not wearing any makeup—it’s really cute.

After Andoll disbanded, Mai announced she would continue her post-idol career by trying different things, especially modeling and talent work. Since then, she’s made guest appearances on TV shows and in commercials.

ME:I (ミーアイ) ⊹ ‘Million Stars’ Performance Video

Maybe it’s that 80s sound, but I loved this song from the very first beat. It’s fast-paced, as you’d expect from this style. Right before the chorus, you can hear that classic electronic drum roll that’s so iconic of 80s music—yet it still keeps that super cute ME:I energy. The choreography is great, and their outfits are the same ones they wear in the opening scene of the MUSE music video. I think Shii-chan looks super cute in that outfit. They kind of look like school uniforms, but I’m not sure what kind exactly.

As usual, I do have one little complaint: the aspect ratio. The video starts in a 1.45 aspect ratio, similar to the old 4:3 TV format, but right before the first line of the song, it switches to an ultrawide format, almost 12:5. I guess I can’t complain about the video not filling the screen anymore, but I still find it annoying that there are black bars throughout—either on the sides or on the top and bottom. I’m not a filmmaker, so maybe I just don’t understand the creative satisfaction they get from adding black bars to everything.

Luckily, I found a Chrome extension that lets me zoom in on YouTube videos and fit them to my screen. It works perfectly on my ultrawide monitor, and it even works on a regular 16:9 screen—you just lose a bit of the sides, but usually, there’s nothing important there anyway.

Back to the music, this is the song I’ve been listening to the most lately. By the way, although I wasn’t too into Ready Go at first, it’s really grown on me after a few listens. The song itself is great; it’s just the distorted vocal effect that still feels a bit off to me.

Toward the end of the video, the colors on the screen behind the girls shift again. First, it turns orange, then green, and finally goes back to the original pink and purple hues—which happen to match the colors of the MUSE single.

That makes three out of the four songs from the single that now have videos on their YouTube channel. I really hope they’ll do something similar for Affogato as well. It’s a much calmer song with a sweet theme, like some of their other tracks, and it has a rhythm that feels like a mix of several styles—maybe even a little tropical.

【MV】CANDY TUNE「エトセトLOVE YOU」

The video shows the members in what looks like a shop, but they are actually inside a fictional dating simulation game called *Eto Seto Love You*. There’s a character with a wrapped candy for a head who is playing the game on something that looks like a PSP or PS Vita (though it’s obviously not a real game). As he selects different options, his “Love Gauge” increases.

During the chorus, the girls hold up a giant receipt featuring the logo of “Market Candy Tune.” Instead of products and prices, the receipt shows event dates and venues like “250411 FOREST,” referring to their April 11 concert at the Japan Special Ceramics Civic Hall Forest Hall, and “250418 FENICE,” referring to their April 18 concert at the Fenice Sakai Large Hall. The subtotal shows “230,314,” a reference to the group’s debut date, March 13, 2023. The tax section says “Ame-chan,” which is the name of their fandom, and the total reads “Priceless.” (But hey, for everything else… there’s Mastercard.)

Near the end of the video, the candy-headed character starts button-mashing like he’s playing an action game, which causes the game to glitch. Someone taps him on the shoulder, and when he turns around, all the members of CANDY TUNE are standing behind him… in his room. They’re all smiling sweetly and making heart signs with their hands, but the candy guy looks absolutely terrified, as if these are the final moments of his life.

In the post-credit scene, he appears to be sleeping. For a moment, I thought it was all just a dream — but the girls are still there, standing around him in silence. Did he die from shock? I’m starting to think this bright and colorful video might actually be telling a horror story… something like *Sadako*, lol.

By the way, the choreography for Etoseto LOVE YOU was created by Ran-sensei (らん先生), through the Japanese creative agency ANOMALY Inc.. ANOMALY specializes in creative production services for entertainment and advertising, including direction, production, and choreography for artists and brands. In this case, they collaborated with ASOBISYSTEM, the talent agency behind CANDY TUNE, to bring the dance moves of this fun song to life.

ANGERME『Hikari no Uta』Promotion Edit

The single will come in five editions: three limited and two regular. The first press of the regular editions includes a random collectible card selected from 9 member cards and one group holographic card based on the cover (20 total).

As I mentioned earlier, this will be the last single for 4th generation member and group leader Kamikokuryou Moe (上國料萌衣).

In her tweet, she linked to her new Twitter account, and the other two images show her new Instagram and TikTok accounts. There’s nothing posted yet on the first two, but they’re clearly new: the Instagram account is marked as recently created, and Twitter shows it was opened this month. The TikTok account, however, surprised me — I wasn’t following it (even though I followed her old one), but it already has two videos, with the oldest one dated February 28 of last year. Maaya is the second former member of Andoll to leave the company since the group disbanded, after Fujii Seia did the same the last day of the last month. If past group history is any indication, eventually all the members will move on. Now that I think about it, I’m not sure what happened with Ayane — she hasn’t posted anything since Andoll’s graduation, but she wasn’t very active even when she was still in the group.

The good news is that most former Imouto Sisters members tend to come back in new groups or projects. And Maaya doesn’t seem to be the exception — she clearly wants her fans to keep following her.

I was very surprised by Misacchi’s announcement, especially after she spent so many years with Lily of the Valley, seeing all the original members graduate, and only leaving when the group disbanded. Now she is one of the first members to graduate from Melty BeaR, after only a few months. Misa even changed her appearance when she joined this group; one of the first photos she posted showed her short hair, holding in her hand the 40 cm of hair she had cut off.

In any case, I hope this May 5th is not Misa’s farewell from the stage, but just a “see you later,” and that we see her again soon in a new project. I believe that will be the case.

On the other hand, Akikaze Hana has been part of several groups. In August 2020, she formed the group LOVE SPEARS (ラブスピアーズ). In February 2022, she formed the group na☆na☆na☆ with two other girls who also belonged to other groups at the same time, but it did not last long and disbanded in May 2023. Shortly afterward, in June 2023, LOVE SPEARS also disbanded. Hana later joined Apollon no Tsubasa (アポロンの翼) in August 2023, a few months after its formation, and remained until it disbanded in September 2024. Including Melty BeaR, Hana has been an original member of three out of the four groups she has been in, and this is the only time she has not remained until the group disbanded.

According to the ASOBISYSTEM official website, the group started with five members selected through ASOBISYSTEM auditions held in Okinawa (2021) and Hokkaido (2023), along with Ririka, an exclusive model for Zipper magazine. They represent a new wave, connecting both Generation Z and Generation Alpha.

Before their debut, four of the Okinawa-based members spent about a year and a half training and performing covers of songs by TEMPURA KIDZ and FRUITS ZIPPER at local events.

Now, they step into the spotlight with their first original track, “HeyWorld What’sUp,” and its bright, energetic music video — a great introduction to their fun style and vibrant energy.

ME:I (ミーアイ) ⊹ ‘MUSE’ MV Behind

The first scene in the BTS is my favorite: the punk band segment featuring Ran, Rinon, Shizuku, and Kokona with their retro televisions. They’re wearing the same outfits as in the dance scene at the Shibuya crossing, which follows immediately after in the making-of video.

Then we see the scene with Keiko, Ayane, Shizuku, and Kokona calling the cat. This comes right before the scene where the cat runs away, featuring Rinon, Suzu, Shizuku, and Ran. At first, I assumed the same four girls appeared in both scenes, but only Shizuku is in both groups.

Next come the scenes in the drawer-like set, which I initially thought was created with CGI. But no—it turns out everything was built physically: the giant phone, the cable, the headphones. They look amazing on camera, and even behind the scenes, they still look too real to be props.

Also, Cocoro looks great.

There’s a glimpse of the sunset scene’s set, which looks like a giant miniature model. It reminded me of the terrain Johnny Fraser-Allen from Weta Workshop built for his Dungeons & Dragons game. I’d love to own a terrain piece like that to fill with miniatures.

Up to this point, the only visible part of the set was the phone. It’s in the dance scene that we see the rest of the drawer—complete with props like pearls on the wall and a CD on the floor. None of this was done with CGI. I would’ve thought at least the pearl background was a green screen effect, because it doesn’t show much depth in the final MV. But I guess dance scenes are hard to composite digitally, and physical sets just work better.

One of the scenes I was most curious about was the one with the girls riding the cat—and that’s the last section featured in this making-of video.

I’ve always had a soft spot for three-member idol groups—it feels like the perfect balance. But B≡FULLEST isn’t just any trio: they’re arguably three of the most otaku-minded members from NijiCon, which is really saying something. In this photo below, we can see the three of them in their B≡FULLEST outfits, which are amazing.

Their official website is live, though light on details. There’s a link to their YouTube channel and a prominent DearStage logo, confirming they’re still with the same production company. No major announcements yet, but it’s clear this is just the beginning.

Over on YouTube, they’ve posted a mysterious teaser video. It’s titled like an archive file—B≡FULLEST_20250418—and was apparently uploaded two weeks ago, completely under the radar.

Their social media presence is minimal so far. No Instagram account (which I think would be perfect for this kind of concept), but maybe that tracks—they’ve always leaned toward Twitter. Years ago, the NijiCon girls even said they weren’t really the Instagram type, preferring platforms that cater more to otaku culture.

That said, the key visual on their website is fantastic. The group’s concept is described as “goddesses cast down from heaven to Earth”. The entire creative direction—including the worldbuilding—is overseen by Aoki Takuto (アオキタクト), known for his work on the NieR and SINoALICE franchises.

Their tagline, “この世界は、終わりから始まった。” (“This world begins when it ends.”), adds a mysterious and slightly apocalyptic tone that fits perfectly with their aesthetic.

They also held an announcement livestream titled:

As for their sound, the livestream description mentions that their music is rooted in J-pop but draws from rock and punk influences—definitely something to keep an eye (and ear) on.

ME:I (ミーアイ) ⊹ ‘Ready Go’ Performance Video

I really love the outfits they wear in this video. The choreography is also top-notch as always—ME:I continues to impress with their performance skills. Interestingly, the Pokémon anime had a theme song called Ready Go back in 2002, used as an opening theme in the original series. At first, I wondered if this new song might be a cover, especially since it sounded a little similar at the beginning—but it’s actually an entirely different song.

Here’s a fun bonus: the official Pokémon anime Twitter account shared a photo of the ME:I girls posing with Pikachu, wearing the same outfits from the video.

As for the song itself… I can’t say I loved it. There’s quite a bit of autotune, and while I get that they’re going for a futuristic vibe, it honestly threw me off a bit. Also, this video is only available in 1080p, while the “MUSE” performance video is in full 4K. And honestly, it doesn’t even feel like real 1080p—the image quality looks worse, as you can see in the screenshots below.

One thing that’s always puzzled me with this channel: the video is shot in a 43:18 aspect ratio, but uploaded in a 16:9 frame with black bars at the top and bottom. For people with ultrawide monitors, it’s a nightmare—it ends up with bars on all sides when viewed fullscreen.

I know I’m nitpicking a lot here, but don’t get me wrong—the song is still good, and the video is fun to watch. I just hope they release another version down the line. If this is what they’re calling the “main” version, I doubt we’ll get a proper music video for it.

MUSE Sales on Oricon

Meanwhile, the “MUSE” single continues to perform well on the Oricon charts, still holding the number one spot with 9,741 additional copies sold on April 17. That brings the total to 186,317 copies so far—at least according to the numbers tracked by Oricon.

The first concern I’ve heard from fans is that the two girls on hiatus, Tsuzumi and Cocoro, are likely to be on hiatus. Don’t go on this tour. In fact, the little negative feedback I’ve heard from fans about the group has been mostly for the same reason, and some take advantage of this to remind them on their social media at every opportunity.

ME:I – MUSE, first-day sales

On another related note. ME:I’s third single, MUSE, was finally released yesterday. It took first place on the Oricon daily charts, and remains in first place today, with 155,571 copies sold on April 15th and 21,005 copies on the 16th. I don’t know why it appears from the 15th, if on the same page it’s marked as having been released on the 16th, but that’s the way it is. So, as of yesterday, it had sold over 176,000 copies.

The group changed to its current name in July 2020. It currently consists of seven members, three of whom joined on July 20th of last year — including Shibata Una, now going by the name Otoha Una (音羽うな).

The previous name came from “Love Response”; in fact, that’s the subtitle on their logo. It’s a weird name, but I’ve seen weirder ones.

The new name, Love Aggression, sounds more romantic, and the updated logo is more stylish.

I’m glad Una is still active after the disbandment of Novice². With so many graduations from Imouto Sisters groups, I think I’ll be writing about more of the former members and what they’re doing now. アンジュルム『アンドロイドは夢を見るか？』Promotion Edit

ANGERME is set to release their 36th single, “Android wa Yume wo Miru ka? / Hikari no Uta” (アンドロイドは夢を見るか？/光のうた; “Do Androids Dream? / Song of Light”), on May 21, 2025. This double A-side single holds particular significance as it marks the final appearance of Kamikokuryo Moe, the group’s leader, who will graduate following their spring tour.

This marks the second gravure project I’ve seen from Maikichi, though I haven’t been following her gravure work too closely. Her previous appearance was in Shuukan Playboy, where she also released a digital photobook with similar vibes.

The Big Comic Spirits issue is labeled as the April 14th volume, despite being released on March 31st. It’s currently available on Amazon in both physical and Kindle editions.

In a tweet, she mentioned that she had to work hard and gain 10 kilos for this photo shoot. I don’t know what it’s like to gain that much weight when you’re already very slim, but it honestly sounds impressive to me.

The digital photobook is titled Otona Janai yo (大人じゃないよ), which means something like “I’m not an adult.” The English text on the cover says: “I’m not an adult, but not a kid.” It reminds me of Britney Spears, and interestingly enough, MAIA is now the same age Britney was when she released “I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman.”

And speaking of Maikichi not being a child anymore, I remember when she was. She’s been singing pretty decently for years now. It made me realize just how long I’ve been listening to indie singers on YouTube. I probably listen to more fan recordings than official music videos from big artists—and I’ve been doing this for over a decade.

The first thing that really caught my attention about MAIA was that she sang songs by JUDY AND MARY, one of my favorite Japanese bands. They’re from an older era, so I didn’t expect someone her age to be singing their songs—but music has no age limit.

Melty BeaR is made up of seven members, with ages ranging from 18 to 26. Their concept is themed around “bears in the forest” — a cute and cozy image that reflects their goal of wrapping everyone in warm, gentle love.

Their first live performance, titled “Début BeaR,” was held on January 12th at Kanda Myoujin Hall in Tokyo — a strong start for a group so new to the scene.

On March 25th, they released their debut single: “Diary / Pastel Lenses” (Diary / パステルレンズ). Both tracks have official music videos on their YouTube channel, giving fans a great first look at their style, sound, and charm.

LOTUS MARRY is based in the Kansai region of Japan, and I actually found out about them through Shion, one of the members. I’ve been following her on TikTok for a while now, and honestly, she’s one of the cutest girls I’ve ever come across on the platform. So when I saw her tweet about joining an idol group, I got curious right away.

They revealed the logo of the group too.

As is tradition with idol groups, each member has been assigned a color, but I was kinda expecting a flower theme or something along those lines—after all, the name LOTUS MARRY definitely gives off that vibe.

And we won’t have to wait long to see more from them because the group will be debuting with a live performance at the GIRLS ☆ DELIGHT#337~LIVE PLANET Kansai Shin Group Ohirome LIVE~ event. The name of the event mentions the debut of a new LIVE PLANET group.

ME:I (ミーアイ) ⊹ ‘MUSE’ Performance Video

The video starts with the members dancing in front of a set that looks like the inside of a desk or dresser drawer, complete with small objects placed around to give it that whimsical feel. About halfway through, the background turns completely black and white, giving the choreography a clean, almost surreal contrast as they continue dancing in what now feels like a blank canvas.

They eventually return to the original stage, but the video closes out with a big visual shift: the iconic Shibuya crossing. Honestly, it’s the coolest set in the whole video, and it makes for a striking finale.

The Rumors: Where Did They Start?

Rumors about a potential Final Fantasy IX remake have been circulating for years, gaining momentum thanks to several credible leaks and insider comments. One of the most talked-about came from a 2021 Nvidia GeForce Now database leak, which listed Final Fantasy IX Remake among many other unannounced titles.

Nvidia initially downplayed the leak, saying it included speculative entries, but since then, many of the games from that list have been officially announced or released—giving fans hope that FFIX is more than just a rumor.

Leakers, Clues, and Square Enix’s Hints

More recently, reputable leaker NateTheHate claimed that the remake is in “active development” but isn’t expected to release in 2025. That suggests we might be looking at a 2026 launch—if the rumor holds up.

Adding to the speculation, Square Enix posted a nostalgic image from Final Fantasy IX with the caption “If you know, you know” and a crying emoji. Was it just a fun throwback? Or a hidden teaser? Fans are leaning toward the latter.

No Official Announcement… Yet

Despite these hints, Square Enix hasn’t officially confirmed anything. They’re celebrating the game’s 25th anniversary with merchandise and collaborations, but there’s been no mention of a remake—at least not yet.

Still, the timing feels suspicious. Between the anniversary, past leaks, and growing chatter online, many believe an announcement could be around the corner.

Final Fantasy IX, A Hidden Gem in the Franchise

Final Fantasy IX is often called the most underrated entry in the series. It marked the end of the PS1 era and arrived just as the PS2 stole the spotlight. Final Fantasy X launched only a few months later and went on to become a massive hit, completely overshadowing IX.

But in the years since, fans have come to appreciate FFIX’s heartfelt story, whimsical style, and strong connection to the franchise’s fantasy roots. Some even rank it above FFVII and X.

A Personal Note…

Honestly? I’ve never played Final Fantasy IX. And it’s for the same reason so many others missed it. I didn’t even realize it had come out! Everyone was too busy talking about the PS2, and Final Fantasy X felt like a leap into the future.

It wasn’t until years later that I realized something was off: “Wait a second… after 8, why is everyone talking about 10?” I guess 9 just got lost in the shuffle. Kinda like what happened with Windows.

The rising Japanese girl group ME:I has been announced as the artist behind “Ready Go,” the fourth ending theme song for the anime Pokémon Horizons: The Series. The song will premiere in episode 90, which airs on April 11.

I haven’t found a preview of the song yet, and I’m not sure if they’ll release anything before the episode airs. To be honest, I don’t really keep up with Pokémon theme songs—until now, that is.

“Ready Go” Will Be Part of ME:I’s Upcoming Single “MUSE”

ME:I will release their new single “MUSE” on April 16, and “Ready Go” will be one of the four tracks included on it. With Pokémon being the world’s biggest entertainment media franchise, it wouldn’t be surprising if we get a music video for “Ready Go” too—though nothing’s been confirmed yet.

The official Pokémon Horizons account even shared a video of ME:I announcing the theme song themselves.

The single will also come in a limited anime edition, which features a themed cover—check out the image below!

The Pokémon featured on it are the starter Pokémon from Scarlet and Violet. The red one is Crocalor, or Achigator (アチゲータ) in Japanese. Fun fact: Crocalor is designed with a Mexican theme.

This led me down a bit of a name rabbit hole:

• The English name Crocalor seems to come from “crocodile” + “calor” (Spanish for heat).
• The Japanese name Achigator felt random at first… until you see the Pokémon sing. Suddenly it makes sense—it comes from “alligator” + “mariachi.” That explains the fire sombrero on its head!

Wait… Where Is the Pokémon World?

I don’t really know what the official lore of the Pokémon world is, but it seems like an alternate version of Earth. They don’t reference real-world countries, yet we get Pokémon like Achigator clearly referencing Mexican culture. Maybe Pokémon are the remnants of a previous civilization that evolved from ours?

…Or maybe I’m just thinking too hard about it. Either way, this crossover between ME:I and Pokémon has me way more invested than I expected!
