Working Concept to create Apple Television for Next Generation?

When Apple releases something it is more than just a product. They also build the whole ecosystem with it to work in perfect synchronization. When they released the iPhone, they did not just release the iPhone, they in fact created a whole ecosystem with it by providing a whole range of services in iTunes. Its not like there wasn't a smartphone before but there just wasn't anything as perfect as iPhone at that time.

Many experts say apple might not be a good at TV market because there is nothing new to offer there. However, truth to be told, there are endless possibilities in the TV market currently with number of cable providers and satellite services working individually. Whereas, Apple is fit to provide a whole bunch of organised services. And in fact, if there is one company that can do it, its Apple. Why? Because they never fail to provide the whole package with their innovative approach and ability to organize to the core. Needless to say this is what they do the best - Innovate and Integrate.

Here is a list of things that Apple should/Must do to be as sucessful in the Television market as Smartphone and Tablet market :

TV set (4K)

If Apple develops a television , it is highly unlikely that they will develop a TV with resolution less that 4K since they aim at top of the market. And it probably would be way cheaper than what it is today around $4000 - $5000, and probably to $3000 when market matures. Reason for this being the no. of production units will be high because of apple's market demand and maturity. And another reason that demand would definitely be high is because of the services offered that are explained later.

TV set (Design)

Apple has always been the state of the art designer, at it would definitely be same for the TV. The TV set would probably have a consistent design absolutely without any unnecessary curve or color theme-ing, with its trademark rounded edges or with no edges at all.

Smart & Powerful Television

If Apple makes a television, it has to be smart with a high powered in-built processor, possibly like A6 or A6x chip. The requirement for such a processor is that it must be running numerous applications downloaded via iTunes. There can be a whole new amount of television applications that can be made particularly for television itself or even some applications can be converted for television usage. Movies and Series on-demand services of iTunes would be used extensively used in such scenario. Another need for faster processor would be because of the introduction of "x265 encode" (to would be explained in other post) that would require much more power for the decoding. Apple just might be the first to integrate it as it did with "x264". This would decrease the bandwidth requirements for movies and webisodes drastically. Also, the software can be upgraded from time to time.

Hard Drive

Not only the movie and series rental but the service to purchase them can also be provided which would require an in built hard drive to store the videos. And the movies can be transferred from TV to the Computer too if extra space is required.

Cable on Internet

When one thinks about the television channels, the only thing that comes to mind is the cable operator or satellite services. However, there is one much much convenient option that we use in our daily routine - The Internet. Average broadband speed in US is about 7.4 Mbps with many ISP's offering speeds of about in 100 Mbps. The requirement for running such a service would be about 3 - 4 Mbps for High definition and 1 - 2 Mbps for standard definition when compressed (Compression will be discussed in other post). What they have to do is work directly with content companies like HBO, NBC, etc to bring in the content. After iTunes, this could be the next revolutionary service from apple.

The Opportunity present is huge, there is much to be improved and a gap to be filled without people even realizing what that the gap is present. Apple holds the expertise in filling such gaps like iPad. Apple has a way of servitude towards the mass consumerism and this is the perfect opportunity for them. Who knows, Apple might just bring out a Television revolution.

Remove “Troubleshoot Compatibility” from the Windows Context Menu

This is not really a very recommended registry trick but arguably Troubleshoot Compatibility is is not a feature you cannot work without. But it is quite a utility to have. Anyway, there is a simple registry trick if you want to remove this option from the right click menu.

Steps to Remove “Troubleshoot Compatibility” :

How to remove "troubleshoot compatibility" from executable files

1. Open Registry editor.(how to start registry editor?)

2. Go to to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > exefile > shellex > ContextMenuHandlers > Compatibility.

3. On the right pane, double click on default and add a minus sign ("-") in front of the value.

4. click OK.

How to remove "troubleshoot compatibility" from application files

1. Open Registry editor.(how to start registry editor?)

2. Go to to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > lnkfile > shellex > ContextMenuHandlers > Compatibility.

3. On the right pane, double click on default and add a minus sign ("-") in front of the value.

4. click OK.

And you won't see the troubleshoot compatibility option again!!

If you want to bring back the "Troubleshoot Compatibility" option back in context menu again, just remove the minus sign from upper steps.

Remove 'Shortcut' text from shortcut icons in Windows

Most annoying thing of the shortcuts after the little arrows on the bottom left are the shortcut text which appears in the details, tiles and contents view. Many must have wondered wouldn't it be great if we could just remove this text. Well, here is a little registry trick which could do this for you.

Steps to Remove 'Shortcut' text from shortcut icons in Windows

1. Open Registry editor.(how to start registry editor?)

2. Go to to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Explorer.

3. On the right hand side, you will find key called "link" with value "1e 00 00 00" .

4. Change the value "1e 00 00 00" to "00 00 00 00" .

5. And its done.

[Note: This trick won't work on existing shortcuts but will work on newly created Shortcuts]

How to Delete facebook Account permanently

4. When you recieve an e-mail and wait for 14 days and do not try to login, if you cannot login after 14 days then it is deleted but if you get a message to reactivate your account just deny .

There are a certain options in the windows explorer which you are uninterested in or do not use at all. In fact, you may want to keep your sidebar clean or want to put some other items in it. A cleaner navigation bar can be very convenient and easy to navigate. What you can do is delete the options that you want to delete.

Before starting this task you will need to get permission.

Here are the steps to get the permission:

1. Press Win + r.

2. Type "regedt32" and press enter.

3. Now, go to Edit tab on top and click on Preferences.

4. Now, Select the User and deselect on deny selection box of full control and click OK.

5. Close the Registry Editor.

Steps to Hide the Items in Windows Explorer Sidebar

1. Open Registry editor.(how to start registry editor?)

2. Follow the box for removal of different options:

Libraries: Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > CLSID > {031E4825-7B94-4dc3-B131-E946B44C8DD5} > ShellFolder and change b080010d to b090010d.

Network: Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > CLSID > {F02C1A0D-BE21-4350-88B0-7367FC96EF3C} > ShellFolder and change b0040064 to b00940064.

Favorites: Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > CLSID > {323CA680-C24D-4099-B94D-446DD2D7249E} > ShellFolder and change a0900100 to a9400100.

To hide Computer:

1. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > CLSID > {20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D} > ShellFolder.
2. In the right pane, right click and create a new DWORD Value (32-bit).
3. Name the DWORD Value "Attributes" and give it a value b094010c.
[Note: Delete the key to show computer back again]

3. Close the registry editor and restart the Computer to take effect.

Prevent the Registry from Opening at Last Open Key

You must have noticed that after you edit your registry and close it with some key left opened then next time when you open the registry it opens at the exact same point where you left it. It can be useful sometimes when you want to start editing from the place you left. But sometimes you do not want anyone else to know about the last changes even if you close it at that point subconsiously.

Steps to Prevent the Registry from Opening at Last Open Key :

1. Open Registry editor.(how to start registry editor?)

2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Current Version >Applets > Regedit.

3. Double click on "Lastkey" and delete the value.

4. Now, close the registry editor.

Now, you must have the permission for the above editing. To get the permission:

2. Type "regedt32" and press enter.

3. Now, go to Edit tab on top and click on Preferences.

4. Now, Select the User and deselect on deny selection box of full control and click OK.

There are quite many people complaining about the those little arrows on every other icon on their desktop. And desktop is all full of shortcut icons. There is a very simple trick to remove those little arrow heads.

Hide Local Hard Drives in My Computer

There are a certain times when someone else is watching our computer and in our own mind we are wishing "oh god! i wish there was a way to hide that local drive". We all have certainly been through that time and the possibility is that we will be facing it occasionally in future. So, this can be established by little bit of registry tweaking. You can actually hide your whole drive, or you can even hide all of you drives at once. The simple way to do it via registry is to create a key at the specific place in the registry which will be explained later in the post. And whenever you want the drive to appear you can simply open the registry and delete the key.

Steps to hide local hard drives in my computer:

1. Open Registry editor.(how to start registry editor?)

2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Policies > Explorer.
3. Right click on the right side pane and add a new DWORD (32-bit) value.
4. Name the DWORD as "Nodrives" and give it the of the drive value you want to hide.

[ Value format = 03ffffff ("drivevalue")]

(Put the drivevalue according to chart below)

ALL: 67108863

A: 1, B: 2, C: 4, D: 8, E: 16, F: 32, G: 64, H: 128, I: 256, J: 512, K: 1024, L: 2048, M: 4096, N: 8192, O: 16384, P: 32768, Q: 65536, R: 131072, S: 262144, T: 524288, U: 1048576, V: 2097152, W: 4194304, X: 8388608, Y: 16777216, Z: 33554432

If you want to hide multiple drives just add their value:

For eg: if you want to hide drive A and D then their dword value would be A + D = 1 + 9 = 10

Hence their DWORD value would be "03ffffff (10)"

5. Restart the computer if it immediately doesn't take effect.

How can i see the drive in hidden mode?

It can be done by simply entering the Drive in adddress bar ( for eg C:\ , D:\ , etc). A simple suggestion would be to not to hide all the drives at the same time since the other user is definitely going to be suspicious.

Change the Basic Windows Icons using Registry Editor

How to Change the Order of Options in Context Menu

There are certain times when you want to change the order of your options in your context menu. But you must have been wondering how to do that. Now, when it comes to context menu anything is possible via Registry editing. They can certainly be difficult enough but these hacks are the can become very easy with the help of tutorial. So, lets cm' on lets place the things in order.

Steps to change the order of context menu:

1. Start Registry editor.(how to start registry editor?)

2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > CLSID key.

3. In CLSID, find the key of the option you want to change the position .

How to find the the desired option key in CLSID ?

Right click on
CLSID key and click on find. (Do not use ctrl + f since it is for universal search and you will never find what you want)
In the find box, enter what you want to find

Untick "keys" & " match whole strings only option" and tick "Values" & "Data ".

Click on find next.

Then, you will find a 'name' - "(default)" and the option name in 'data'(
with some additional text like context menu handler).
Then a key with alphanumeric and hash will be selected on left side, click on it.

You have found the desired key. Now simply Click on the key.

for e.g -

< For "open with" option it is {09799AFB-AD67-11d1-ABCD-00C04FC30936}

For "winrar" option it is {B41DB860-8EE4-11D2-9906-E49FADC173CA}

4. Once you have selected the key, Right click on the Right side division.
5. Go to new and click on DWORD Value.
6. Name it "flags" and press enter.
7. Double click on flags and set hexadecimal value to "1" or "2" or "3" .

Remember:

Set flag to hexadecimal value "0" - Your option will come into rename menu part.

Set flag to hexadecimal value "1" - Your option will come into send to, copy to folder and move to folder menu part.

Set flag to hexadecimal value "2" - Your option will come into its default menu position.

Torrent Terminology

There are a certain terms that we come across every day when we use torrents and on the other hand there are a certain terms which we get to know when we are learning deep (working, operations,etc) about torrents. So, for new torrent users this can be a great guide to knowing the basic terminology about torrents. Otherwise for the people following my series this is not the post itself but this is a post which will help in giving you a clear understanding about some of the terms used in the the other parts of series which you probably did not understand ( which means you are redirected here). Hence this post will provide you all the term you need to know while learning about torrent in detail in very simple language but providing you with equally technical knowledge and also the sources.

And please pay attention to each and every line in this post since it provides all the ingredients for other posts.

The terminology has been divided in three categories:

Basic Terminology - These are the basic terms that are used in the torrent world which every torrent user must know about.
Technical Terminology - These are the little technical terms about torrents which you would not come across as a basic torrent user but you would definitely come around them while trying to get an insight about torrent.
Reference Terminology - These are not the terms related directly to torrents but are very important to know when you are learning about the operations and protocol of torrent. And also the external sources would also be provided if you want the indepth detail for the same.

Basic Terminology

Torrent - Torrent is the type of file which contains the metadata about the file you want to download. This file makes use of a torrent client in order to download the desired file. However, this file does not contain the data of file you wish to download.

Torrent Client - This is a software which is used to run the torrent file. This is the main body and the center of torrent download because it keeps track and shows information about seeds, peers, trackers, etc. It also keeps track of all the torrents and parts of file downloaded at once. We can play, pause, stop, remove torrent. Plus it can also create new torrent for the user if he wishes. No torrent can be downloaded without the torrent client.

Peer - Peers are the instances of bit-torrent file which are downloading and have not got the full file yet. But they still play a key role in the swarm as they start to upload the parts of file that they have downloaded already hence increasing the overall upload speed of the torrent. In other words, a peer is any active participant in the swarm which is not a seeder.

Seed - A seed is any computer which has got the full copy of the file and is uploading the file for the swarm. Once you have downloaded the file the torrent client starts to upload the files (otherwise called seeding) automatically until the user stops it deliberately.

Swarm - Swarm is a group of computers connected to a file. It is integration of both peers and seeders. Suppose there are 40 peers and 35 seeders then the swarm consists of 75 members.Swarm and torrent client work together to distribute a particular file. [Note - A swarm may be able to survive temporarily without a seeder sometimes, it depends if the peers have all the pieces of file to exchange. But ultimately it requires a seeder.]

Leech - Leech is referred to a peer who has negative effect on the swarm. A leecher usually sets his upload speed very low hence resulting in a very low share ratio. Another thing that leecher a does is deletes the file as soon as it is downloaded.

Lurker - A lurker is a user which downloads file from a group but does not add any new content. Do not confuse lurker with a leecher since a lurker seeds.

Pieces - These are the equal parts files have been divided into for the purpose of being sent via torrent. These are usually in a power of 2 (for eg. 64kb, 128kb, 512kb, 1mb, 2mb)

Share-Ratio - Share ratio is the upload download ratio of a user. it is calculated by Share ratio = Uploaded data/Downloaded data. A share ratio above one is considered to be a good ratio and has positive impact in bit-torrent community.

Availability - It is the number of complete copies of the file available. Every seed adds 1 unit to this number plus the sum of file parts from different peers enough to complete a file.

for example:

Suppose there are 100 parts of a file. And there are 10 seeders and 20 peers. Each peer is uploading 10 parts of the file(considering all parts being uploaded are different until full file is complete).

So, the availability would be no. of uploaders + no. of peers*no. of different parts/no. of parts of file

Hence in this case Availability = 10 + 20*10/100 = 12

[Note - This is the very ideal case because no. of parts cannot be different they tend to overlap hence decreasing the efficiency. This was just to give idea, just think about it for a minute and you will understand]

Health - It is basically synonym to the availability. Different sites may have different criteria for health. It shows if all pieces of torrent are available to download. It is between 0 to 1 and percentage is calculates from this value.

Technical Terminology ( A little bit technical !)

Tracker - It is a server on the internet which assists in communication between the the peers (i.e torrent clients) using the bittorrent protocol. It is basically the heart of the complete torrent culture. It tracks all the peers & seeders and synchronizes all the download through the same tracker.
In other words, tracker stores all the information about the torrent in itself and torrent client frequently queries the tracker about seeds peers and all other information about the tracker and in return tracker provides client the information asked for.

Peer-to-peer File Sharing - Peer to peer sharing is a type of file sharing which doesn't involve or require a single server/mirror servers to upload a file for all users to download. Instead, it is a type of sharing which involves the downloaders themselves to upload the file once they have downloaded it hence acting as host or servers to users who are downloading. This way as the process matures a big chain of uploaders is potentially made(if they do-not act as leechers) and the sum of upload speeds is quite high hence putting no pressure on single server.

Metadata (Metainfo) - In very simple words, metadata means data about data. Metadata gives the certain information about the actual data like image, video, etc. Metadata can actually be about anything. It is better to be said as the information about the real data.
In reference to torrent it is metadata is called metainfo as it contains the metadata about the target file + some other info like location of the tracker(s).

Example of metadata :

A video is the data in itself, then the metadata of video would be frames/second, resolution, size, length, etc.

Similarly the metadata of picture would be color depth, frame size, size, length, etc.

The metadata of a text file would be the name of author, file size, file encoding,etc

Scrape - It is the request sent by a torrent client to the tracker to ask for the information and about the statistics (peers, seeders, etc of the torrent).

Multi-tracking - It is an extension to torrent file metadata which allows the use of multiple trackers per file. So, if the one tracker fails another tracker can continue the process. It is an unofficial feature but has been implemented by quite a lot of clients like BitComet, BitTornado, BitTorrent, KTorrent, Transmission, µTorrent, Vuze, etc.

Index - Index is a list of .torrent files that are managed by a website, used for the purpose of searching desired torrent files on the site.

Choking - This is the state of peer in which other client refuses pieces to send file to the peer.

These are the situations in which one client chokes another client :

1. Second client is a seed i.e it does not require any piece to download.
2. Client has already approached its maximum upload capacity (i.e upload speed at that instant).
3. If the second client has been Blacklisted because of some reasons like awful upload/download ratio or because of being abusive.

End Game - End game refers to the process of downloading of pieces towards the end the torrent download. Typically the pieces required towards the end of the downloading procedure are the most difficult to get since the easy-to-get and more accessible pieces have already been downloaded.
So, in order to avoid delaying the downloading completion process the clients tries to attain the last pieces from all of the peers. Once the last pieces have been downloaded, client cancels request to all other peers. Sure it uses some extra bandwidth but this is very better to do it than other way around

Peer_ID - It is a unique ID of every torrent client which is generated by client at the startup. It can be any value including Binary Data.

Reference Terminology

Bencode - Bencode is the type of encoding which is used to encode the metadata in the torrent files. It is not as efficient as binary coding but is definitely simpler than that. It supports four types of values:byte strings, integers, lists, and dictionaries. Value type of Bencode are described in image below.

SHA-1 Hash - SHA-1 hash is like the fingerprint of the digital files. It is a 160 bit value. It is known to be successor of MD5 Hash. Basic Concepts and Procedure of Downloading via Torrent

When it comes to downloading the first thing that comes to the mind is torrent. Irrespective of the file type or size one can download any type of file via torrent. And I personally think torrents have been one of the biggest revolution in the history of internet. And it is also noteworthy that torrents at any instant have more active users than Facebook and you-tube combined. Although they have always been in lawsuit for copyright cases etc but it has never ever had any kind of effect on its users. But one thing that could definitely be said is that the torrents make life a lot simpler for their users.

Torrents have been a big thing since the first time they were launched and a hell lot of people use it on a daily basis. There is always been a curiosity of having deeper and better knowledge of torrents in their users. And people currently not using torrents have even more curiosity of using it. Now, this series will explain to you every aspect of torrent from tree-top to the grass-root level. If you do not use torrent yet this series will teach you how to do it. And if you are already a big time torrent user this series will give you a deep insight about the working and operation of torrents.

What is torrent?

A torrent basically is nothing but a kind of file that stores the metadata used for bittorrent. However, a torrent does not contain any any kind of information about the content of the file. In simple words, all a torrent file contains are the URL of the tracker(s) and the metadata about the file to be shared. In order to download desired file one has to download the torrent file first which would initiate the process of download of file via Torrent client.

What are the requirements to download via torrent?

There are no specific PC requirements to download a file via torrent. All you require to download via torrent are two things:

A torrent client (utorrent <windows>, bittorrent<windows>, vuze<linux>, transmission<mac>, etc)
The torrent file for respective target file

What is the basic working of torrents?

Basically, torrents work by dividing the target file into small information chunks which can be found by other hosts called seeders.

It starts when some distributor uploads the target file on one of the torrent sites which in turn creates a torrent for the distributor and uploads the same torrent online. Now, some person (or maybe many people) downloads the torrent for the target file and opens it via torrent client(utorrent, bittorrent, vuze, etc). then, the torrent client starts downloading the file chunk by chunk from the uploader where the uploader acts as a host for the target file. The downloading speed depends on the uploading speed and other downloading peers.

Here are the some examples for clear understanding,

1. Suppose, if Original Distributor is uploading at the speed of 1000 kbps and one person is downloading then he can get a maximum downloading speed of 1000 kbps in ideal conditions.

2. Suppose, if Original Distributor is uploading at the speed of 1000 kbps and two people are downloading then they can get a maximum downloading speed of 500 kbps (it may vary depending on some factors) in ideal conditions .

3. Suppose, if Original Distributor is uploading at the speed of 1000 kbps and four people are downloading then they can get a maximum downloading speed of 250 kbps (which may vary depending on some factors) in ideal conditions .

Now, as soon as the torrent client has has downloaded all the chunks of file it assembles them into a useable form (if there are multiple files in a torrent it keeps assembling and organizing them as soon as all the chunks of files are downloaded) and starts uploading (otherwise known as seeding) it immideatly from the same path in the PC where it is downloaded. Hence, acting as another host adding to the upload speed of the torrent.

This process goes on as newer and newer people start downloading and seeding it for other downloaders. Hence forming a self sustainable peer-to-peer chain untill the demand for the torrent compeletly goes off.

What is the procedure to download via torrent?

You just need to follow these simple conventional steps to download via torrent:

Download and install a torrent client (preferably utorrent since it is very light weight)
Once you have installed a torrent client now you would need a torrent file of what you want to download. These files are present all over the internet if you have some idea of the torrent sites. But you do not have any idea of torrent sites then just simply go to torrentz.com (a torrent search engine site).
Search your desired file in the search box.
A list of files will show down. Choose the suitable file and click on it.
Now, a number of sites will open up. Click on one of the sites and the site will open up in a new window.
In the site find the link Download via torrent, get this torrent, download torrent or something similar and click on it.
A torrent file will download tself.
Go to downloaded torrent file on your PC and double click on it.
The torrent client will open up showing the file percentage downloaded.
Similarly you can drag and drop other torrent files in the torrent client.
After download is complete the file will start seeding (i.e uploading for other downloaders).
Just let it seed as much as you have downloaded as a responsible torrent user :) then you can delete it.

So, these were the basic concepts and procedure of torrents. Regular Torrent users are very familiar with these. Disable Run or Find from Start Menu

1. Start Regedit
2. Go to HKey_Current_User \ Software\ Microsoft \Windows \ Current Version \ Policies \ Explorer
3. Right click on the right panel and add a New / DWORD
4. Name it NoFile or NoRun
5. Give it a value of 1
6. Reboot the computer

Change the Registered Owner in Windows

1. Start Regedit
2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion.
3. Find and Right click on the registeredOwner or RegisteredOrganisation and click Modify.
4. Just rename and congrats you are done..!!

How to Add Application to Desktop Right Click Menu

1. Open the registry editor searchng "regedit" in the start menu.

2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell.

3. Right click on shell go to new and click on key and name the key as "your application (notepad in this case)".

4. If you want to assign an alternate key for this menu you can change the (Default) value on the right and put an & character in front of the key name. For example in this case if you right click on desktop and press N, Notepad will open up.

5. Right click on your application key folder (the one you made earlier) and make a new key under it and name it command.

6. Now go to your application, press "shift + right click" on it and click on copy as path.

7. Now go back to registry, click on command and double click on (Default) key and paste the path (copied in last step) in the value data and click OK.

8. Its done!! You can close the registry editor and right click on the desktop to check.

In the previous post of the series we learned about the Objective, basic concepts & terminologies of the registry. That surely would have increased your curiosity of knowing about how to open and edit the Windows Registry. In this post I would tell you about how to open the registry editor and also how to backup and restore the windows registry.

But before that i would like to warn you that be extremely cautious before editing the registry as it can potentially be quite destructive. Simply deleting a registry key without thought may lead to complete dis-functioning of a software, and little unknown fault may even lead to re-installing the whole windows. So, my advice would be know what you are doing before you do it and stay away from any key that you feel strange about.

How to open Windows Registry Editor?

Follow these three simple steps:

1. Press Win + R on your keyboard.

2. In the Run dialogue box type "regedit" and press enter.

3. If a dialogue box appears click yes on it and your Registry Editor is open.

Now that you have opened you registry editor, you are ready to make the customizations. But before you make the customizations make sure to backup you registry first in case somethng goes wrong.

How to backup Windows Registry?

1. Open the Registry Editor.

2. To backup the full registry, then click the root key to close all the child subkeys.

3. Click on the File tab and then click on Export.

4. In the Save box, type the name and choose the location to save the registry as a .Reg file.

Now that you have saved the registry, you can make whatever customizations you want in it. And if something goes wrong You can always restore the registry from the backup. Only the changes made between the registry after backup and till current time will be lost which supposedly will not be much if you regularly backup your registry.

How to restore your registry?

1. Open the Registry Editor.

2. To backup the full registry, then click the root key to close all the child subkeys.

3. Click on the File tab and then click on Import.

4. And the Registry will restored.

It is always advisable to always backup your registry before you carry out changes in it. Plus if you have backed up your registry you do not need to worry about playing with it a little bit ;)

What is Windows Registry and its use?

Basically, Registry is the collective name for various database files located within the Windows Installation Directory. In simple terms, Windows Registry is the database that holds all the settings and options for the Microsoft windows in their hierarchical order. It is used to store settings and options for Windows software applications, user preferences, operating system, hardware devices,etc. It holds even the tiniest bit of information about your computer. A lot of people also call it the DNA for Windows Operating System which is quite true as it builds up the base for the operating system. Any change that you make to a program, hardware or system configuration is stored in the Registry.

Basic Elements and Structure

Basically, a registry contains of two basic elements:

Keys
Values
Hives

Keys - The registry keys are similar to folders, each key can contain a value and numerous subkeys which in turn may contain subkeys and so on. Each subkey is mandatory to have a name since with the help of names keys can be accessed from the levels of hierarchy.The origin of hierarchy can be traced back to the a root key handle. Registry keys may be restricted in windows depending on the user privileges, security method of applications or by system security policy (It may be predefined in system ir configured by administrator). There are 7 Predefined Root keys, named according to their handles(conatant values) which will be explained later in hives.

Values - Now, we learned in keys that each key contains some value (they may or may-not be defined). Registry value is the data stored within the keys. It is located in the right hand side part of the registry editor. A value can store data in various formats. In Registry editor, first we enter the format of value then we enter the value. Formats in which value can store data are given below(You can skip the formats):

Hives - A hive is a logical group of keys, subkeys and value in the registry. A hive begins with a HKEY at the top of the hierarchy. All hives have a different purpose and role in the Computer and hence different type of data is stored in different hives.
Lets know about the different hives and their functions :

-->> HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT - This key contains information about registered applications and contain file extention associations. It acts like a classification bridge between the file aplication and file extention. For example: when we open a .txt file it opens in the notepad because of some subkey in this key

-->>HKEY_CURRENT_USER - This key contains the information and settings for the user that is logged on. Each time the user logs on this key is created in such a way that some profile information is copied from HKEY_USERS to this key. This key cannot be edited.

-->>HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE - This key stores the general settings for all the users on the computer. The key is actually not located in the disk but in the system memory. It consists of 5 parts.

Hardware: It stores settings for device drivers, etc.
Security accounts manager(SAM): It stores the universal security settings for the Computer.
Security: It stores the local security settings for the Computer such as password policies, user rights,etc.
Software: It contains default windows settings. It is modified by other applications installed( i.e outside applications).
System: It contains settings and values to boot the system.

[Note: Hardware, SAM, System keys cannot be modified]

-->>HKEY_USERS - This key contains the default user settings that are used to open HKEY_CURRENT_USER plus it also stores the information and settings of all the users who have logged in to the computer.

-->>HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG - This key stores information that is currently in use at runtime. It is not permanently stored on disk and is initiated at boot time.

How to (Methods) Block Specific Websites on your PC

There are some times when you want to keep away some people from using some specific or any websites or even specific category of websites. You can be a boss wanting to stop the office workers from misusing the company internet, or you can be a parent wanting to keep your children away from strangers or the internet hounds waiting ot there and also to keep your children away from porn sites or explicit contents. So, the only way is to block them. There are many methods to block the specific sites. All the methods will be explained to you in this post.

[Note: If you want to specifically block facebook read this post]

METHOD 1 - Blocking Websites on Internet Explorer

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Go to Tools ->> Internet Options ->>Contents.

3. Under the content Advisor, Click on settings (To activate settings tab Enable Content Advisor if it is disabled).

4. Go to Approved Sites tab,type *SITENAMES* and click on Never

5. Set up your password as prompted by Internet Explorer.

6. Now in the General tab of content advisor settings make sure to select "Users can see websites that have no ratings".

7. And its done! Now, whenever you open the locked website you will be prompted to enter password.

[Note: This is not really a great method because of the following flaws-

1. It only works on Internet Explorer 8 or Higher.

2. User can use other browsers to open it and IE is the less preferred browser anyway.

3. Content advisor password can also be removed if the other user knows how to do it. (Click here to know how to remove Content advisor password in IE)]

METHOD 2 - Blocking Websites in host file

1. Go to My Computer -> os (c:) -> Windows -> System32 -> Drivers -> etc.

2. Right click on Hosts file and open it with notepad.

3. Now, take a look at 127.0.0.1 localhost and copy paste the IP address and name underneath it like the below

4. And make sure to change the last number of IP address as you increase number of sites (look at above picture).
5. Save the file and restart your computer and its done.

METHOD 3 - Blocking Websites on the Internet Router

This method varies from router to router and is not even present in some of the routers. Hence, there is no specific method to do the same. But still i will tell you the way to do it as close i can.

1. Go to your Router Set-up page.
2. Find the Security (WAN) tab or option somewhere and try to find some option to block website with IP address or specific keywords.
3. Put these IP addresses of the sites you want to block in the given field .

4. Save the settings and its done.

METHOD 4 - Blocking Websites with Parental Control

Since this is not a built in feature in windows you need to download Windows live family safety from the internet.

1. Download Windows live family safety.

2. Install it and be sure to check the family safety box during installation.

3. Go to Control Panel -> Parental Control.

4. Select the windows user you want to block and go to windows live family safety (You may have to enter your windows live ID and password).

5. Now, go to web filtering list and put in the address of the site you want to block in the address bar and click on block.
7. You can make a list of sites like this.

6. Hence, specific web addresses are blocked for the specific user.

METHOD 5 - Blocking Websites using Third Party Applications

Here are some of the applications to block selected websites. Just download and install one of these and follow the required instructions by the software

How to (Methods) Block Facebook on your PC

Facebook can potentially be quite annoying and destructive when it interferes with the primary task of the people during the work time. For example people sit in front of facebook at the time of work leading company to the losses, children wasting their time sitting idle full time in front of facebook and a cause of headache to the Parents. The only way to get rid of these problems is to block the website on a particular PC. So, here are some of the ways to block facebook on the PC and to avoid unnecessary headache related to it.

METHOD 1 - Blocking Facebook on Internet Explorer

1. Open Internet Explorer.

2. Go to Tools ->> Internet Options ->>Contents.

3. Under the content Advisor, Click on settings (To activate settings tab Enable Content Advisor if it is disabled).

STEPS TO ATTACH AN EXECUTIVE FILE IN GMAIL :

1. Rename the file without an exe extension.

2. Compress it with any compression utility ( Winrar )and then attach it.

Now it will get attached, and uploaded successfully. The receiver of the email should uncompress the attachment and rename it again with exe extension.

How to Customize the ‘via’ Status on your Facebook Posts

Did you notice when some people or pages leave a status / post on Facebook , they have their own custom ‘posted via..’ printed together at the bottom of the status. This custom status usually will show where the status was posted from and seems to be fixed according to the device they logged in.

For example, post an FB status from your iPhone, Blackberry or even from your mobile web browser, and you will see the device name reflected at your status like ‘posted via iPhone’ and so on. All it takes is a little trick.

CREATE YOUR OWN FACEBOOK APPLICATION

Just follow the simple steps to make your own Facebook Application

1. Go to Facebook Developer page and click the Apps tab.

2. Click Create New App button.

3. Insert App Name and click Continue. You can leave the ‘App Namespace’ and ‘Web Hosting’ as we don’t need them here. The App Name is the name that will appear in your ‘posted via…’ status, so choose wisely.

4. Complete the security check box and click Submit.

5. Next page is to fill up some more details. You does not have to fill all the details ,just complete the marked items as shown below (1-4 steps).

6. Now, here is the important step, copy the 'APP ID'.

Posting A Custom Status To Facebook

You have now created your own Facebook App! Now let’s move on to posting with your new via status.

To share the post to your own Facebook Wall, you can simply copy the URM below, replace the ‘<APP_ID>’ with your own App ID that you have just created and open it in a new browser/tab.

Be sure to change the domain included in the last part of the URL to your own domain as stated in the Facebook Application form. In this case, I am using http://www.apple.com/.
When you open it in a new tab/browser, you will see a custom dialog box with your custom ‘posted via’ stated. Enter your message and click Share. Notice that in this example ‘via Iphone’ appears at the bottom of the status box.

4. After you share it on your wall, your friends will see as below, and when they click on the ‘posted via..’ link, it will bring them to the URL you specified in the Facebook Application page earlier. In this example, it will redirect to apple.com

5. And its done, now you can update your status via anything...!!!!
