Calling it a Max display feels appropriate because it is noticeably larger than the screens found on most current smartphones. Games appear more expansive, text is easier to read, and interface elements have more room to breathe. In supported FPS titles with fixed landscape resolutions, nubia claims enemy outlines can appear up to 40 percent larger compared with the smaller nubia Neo 5 5G.

The large canvas is useful outside gaming as well. Watching videos feels closer to using a compact tablet, while webpages, social feeds, electronic books, presentations, and documents can display more information at once. Split-Screen Mode and Floating Window Mode also make greater sense on a panel this spacious because two applications can remain usable without feeling excessively cramped.

The 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling, animations, and supported games look fluid, while the 1.5K resolution keeps text and images crisp despite the generous dimensions. Since it uses IPS LCD rather than OLED, you do not get the same perfect black levels and intense contrast associated with premium AMOLED panels, but the display remains clear, colorful, and well suited for gaming and everyday media consumption.

nubia also includes SGS-certified hardware-level eye care, Full-Scene Software Eye Care, nighttime protection, a reading algorithm, ambient-light adjustment, and usage reminders. These technologies do not replace proper breaks, but they can make longer reading, streaming, or gaming sessions more comfortable, especially for users who spend several hours each day looking at their phone.

Stellar Gaming Design

The nubia Neo 5 Max 5G carries the same bold Gaming DNA that distinguishes the Neo family from ordinary smartphones. Its rear panel features angular lines, layered visual elements, an Eagle Eye light strip design, and RGB Dynamic Lighting that gives the device a futuristic appearance.

My review unit looks more like a portable gaming machine than a conventional mobile phone, which is exactly the intended effect. The RGB lighting adds character to the rear panel and helps the phone feel at home beside gaming laptops, mechanical keyboards, controllers, and other illuminated accessories.

The phone is available in Black and Titanium Gold. Black gives the device either a more subtle and restrained look, while Titanium Gold - which I have here - emphasizes its metallic details and makes the futuristic patterns more noticeable.

At 180.9 x 88.4 x 8.0 mm and 245 grams, this is a genuinely large and heavy smartphone. One-handed operation can be challenging, and users with smaller hands may need time to adjust. However, the broad body feels more natural when held horizontally with both hands, which is how many owners will use it for gaming and video playback.

The glass front is paired with a plastic back, helping manage weight despite the enormous screen and battery. IP64 dust and splash resistance also adds useful protection against everyday exposure, although the air ducts are rated IP54 and the phone should not be submerged or treated as waterproof.

Imaging Performance

50 MegaPixels Main Camera

Photography may not be the top reason for choosing the nubia Neo 5 Max 5G (nubia Neo 5 GT is better at imaging) but its 50 MegaPixels f/1.8 main camera is capable enough for casual everyday use. Under bright outdoor lighting, it can capture social-media-ready photos with respectable detail, pleasing colors, and sufficient clarity for documenting trips, food, pets, gaming setups, and moments with friends.

The camera performs best when you give it plenty of light and keep the phone steady. Dynamic range and low-light consistency are more modest than what you might expect from camera-focused midrange smartphones, so users should manage their expectations when shooting difficult backlit scenes or dim environments.

A 2 MegaPixels depth sensor supports portrait photography by helping the software separate the subject from the background. Edge detection can be adequate for simple compositions, although fine hair, glasses, and complicated backgrounds may still challenge the artificial blur effect.

16 MegaPixels Front Camera

The 16 MegaPixels punch-hole front camera is suitable for selfies, video calls, online classes, and social-media updates. Images are generally presentable in good lighting, with enough facial detail for casual sharing without making the camera system feel like the center of the device.

For better selfies, it helps to face a window or another soft light source and avoid relying heavily on beauty filters. Group selfies can also benefit from the large screen, which provides a generous preview and makes it easier to check whether everyone fits inside the frame.

Video Recording

The rear camera can record video at up to 1080p resolution at 30fps and 60fps with EIS, which is adequate for casual clips, social-media posts, school activities, and everyday documentation. The front camera, also a 1080p shooter, is likewise useful for straightforward talking-head clips, calls, and quick personal updates.

Video recording is not a defining strength of this model, especially for creators who require 4K resolution, advanced stabilization, or extensive manual controls. For the best results, record in bright conditions, use two hands or a tripod for stability, and avoid aggressive movement that could introduce visible shake.

For ordinary users who mainly need to capture occasional memories or upload short clips, the video system gets the basic job done. The Neo 5 Max is ultimately more compelling as a gaming, entertainment, and multitasking device than as a dedicated content-creation camera phone.

While some of these features may feel experimental depending on the application and language being used, they help the phone offer more than just a large display and gaming-focused hardware.

One of the most interesting additions is Gaming Coach, which can provide real-time guidance and active combat status reports in supported titles. nubia says the feature works with games such as Free Fire, PUBG, and Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, with support for more titles expected to arrive.

This can be useful for newer players who are still learning character roles, map awareness, timing, and basic combat decisions. More experienced gamers may not rely on it constantly, but it can still serve as an extra source of information during practice matches or when trying unfamiliar heroes and strategies.

Gaming Chatbot is designed to answer gameplay-related questions using a large language model. Instead of leaving the game and searching manually for item builds, mechanics, or character tips, users may be able to ask questions directly and receive quick suggestions.

Demi Auto-Chat can read incoming messages, understand their context, and generate suitable replies on the user's behalf. This may help when a message arrives in the middle of a match and you need to send a quick response without typing a complete sentence while your attention is focused on the game.

Outside gaming, AI Memory allows users to pinch the screen using three fingers for smart recognition and content analysis. It can help identify information displayed on the screen and organize relevant details in one place, which may be convenient when saving addresses, event details, product information, or notes from webpages.

AI Text Generation can assist with drafting or refining written content, while AI Image Generation provides different methods for creating visuals. AI Translate supports multi-person offline conference translation and real-time translation during calls, making it potentially useful for meetings, travel, and conversations involving different languages.

AI Scam Alert is one of the more practical features because it is designed to recognize possible scam content in calls and text messages, then provide real-time warnings. It should still be treated as an extra layer of protection rather than a replacement for careful judgment, especially when messages involve money, passwords, verification codes, or suspicious links.

Internal Hardware

Powering the nubia Neo 5 Max 5G is the MediaTek Dimensity 7100 chipset, an octa-core processor manufactured using a 6nm process. Its CPU includes four Cortex-A78 performance cores running at up to 2.4GHz and four Cortex-A55 efficiency cores running at up to 2.0GHz, paired with a Mali-G610 MP2 GPU.

This hardware places the device firmly within the midrange gaming segment. It is not positioned as an ultra-premium flagship processor, but it provides enough performance for everyday multitasking, popular games, social media, video streaming, navigation, and productivity applications.

The 6nm architecture also aims to balance speed with power efficiency. This matters on a device built for long gaming sessions because sustained performance is often more valuable than a short burst of benchmark power followed by noticeable heating and throttling.

RAM and RAM Expansion

The local configuration comes with 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM, which should be sufficient for most users who frequently move between games, messaging applications, browsers, social-media platforms, and streaming services. nubia lists a maximum LPDDR5X speed of up to 5,500Mbps, helping the device load and switch between tasks more efficiently.

MyOS 16 also supports virtual RAM expansion, allowing part of the internal storage to function as additional memory when needed. This can help keep more applications available in the background, although virtual RAM remains slower than physical LPDDR5X memory and should not be treated as a direct substitute for additional built-in RAM.

For ordinary daily use, 8GB remains a practical amount. The phone can handle messaging, browsing, video playback, casual editing, and gaming without requiring users to close applications constantly.

Internal Storage

The nubia Neo 5 Max 5G comes with 256GB of internal storage, providing users with ample room for large mobile games, downloaded movies and TV shows, offline music playlists, high-resolution photos, videos, documents, and application data. This generous storage capacity is particularly valuable for a gaming smartphone, as today's biggest titles can easily occupy several gigabytes each after installing additional maps, high-resolution textures, voice packs, and frequent updates. For most users, 256GB should be more than enough for years of everyday use without constantly worrying about running out of space.

One omission worth noting, however, is the lack of a microSD card slot. Unlike some smartphones that allow users to expand storage whenever needed, the Neo 5 Max relies entirely on its built-in memory. While I would have appreciated the flexibility of expandable storage, especially for users who enjoy recording plenty of videos or carrying an extensive offline media library, the sizeable 256GB capacity does help soften that compromise. Realistically, many users may never feel the need for additional storage, but having the option would certainly have been a welcome bonus.

nubia also promotes its UFS Boosted Dynamic Memory technology, claiming improvements of up to 146 percent in read speed and up to 102 percent in write speed. Faster storage plays an important role in the overall user experience. It can lead to shorter game loading times, quicker app launches and installations, faster file transfers, and smoother multitasking. Combined with the phone's gaming-focused hardware, these storage optimizations help make everyday interactions feel snappier and more responsive, even when juggling multiple apps or working with larger files.

Software

The nubia Neo 5 Max 5G runs Android 16 with MyOS 16 on top. The interface retains the familiar Android foundation while adding nubia's gaming tools, AI features, multitasking modes, customization options, and performance controls.

The large screen gives the software more room to work. Split-Screen Mode allows two supported applications to appear at the same time, while Floating Window Mode keeps a smaller application open above another task. These options are particularly useful when watching a video while checking messages, following a guide during a game, or referring to a document while writing notes.

nubia MyOS Split-Screen Mode

MyOS 16 offers several experiences that many nubia users will likely appreciate in everyday use. E-Ink or Reading Mode transforms the large 7.5-inch display into a more comfortable canvas for reading articles, e-books, PDFs, and other long-form content by simplifying the interface and reducing visual distractions, making extended reading sessions easier on the eyes. Private Space adds peace of mind by providing a secure, encrypted area for sensitive photos, videos, applications, and files, allowing users to keep personal or work-related content separate from the rest of the phone. Meanwhile, Game Space serves as the central hub for the Neo 5 Max 5G's gaming ecosystem, bringing together installed games, performance profiles, controller and Neo Triggers customization, display and touch settings, notification management, and other gaming tools in one organized interface. Having these options readily accessible allows players to fine-tune the phone according to their preferred play style before every match, reinforcing the device's identity as a purpose-built gaming smartphone rather than just another Android handset.

MyOS 16 includes several layers of customization, although some users may need time to explore the settings and locate all the available gaming and AI functions. The software experience is more feature-rich than minimalist, which suits buyers who enjoy adjusting performance modes, lighting effects, multitasking tools, and controls.

As always, long-term software support is worth considering when comparing smartphones. Performance and features matter at launch, but reliable security patches and Android version updates can determine how well the device ages after several years of use.

Multimedia Limitations

One area where I hope nubia can further improve the Neo 5 Max 5G through future software updates is its multimedia experience. The phone currently does not have a proprietary nubia Gallery app, so users will mainly rely on Google Photos or their preferred third-party application for browsing and organizing locally stored photos and videos. While these alternatives work perfectly fine, I think a dedicated Gallery app optimized specifically for that beautiful and expansive 7.5-inch display would make the experience even better, especially with intuitive album management, offline viewing, and convenient built-in photo and video editing tools.

I also noticed during my testing that the phone currently lacks the ability to play even downsampled 4K video files natively. This is something I am particularly hopeful nubia can address through a future firmware update because the MediaTek Dimensity 7100 platform should have sufficient processing capability for 4K video decoding. For me that's reassuring enough since I usually charge my phone at the end of the day anyway, like most of you.
