In the never-ending quest for more power in our tech-driven world, get ready for a new wireless standard that will be three times faster than the current Wi-Fi standard of 802.11n. The new wireless standard, also known as 802.11ac, will be able to transmit wireless signals on the 5Ghz band. In other words, you’ll notice a larger range and will be able to perform just about every function from downloading files to streaming videos faster. The boost in power will also make it easier for a wireless signal to transmit through barriers, such as walls.

Understanding 802.11 Technology

The 802.11 family refers to the wireless networking standard, first established in 1997. Once wireless technology started to become widely available, the first widely-accepted 802.11 standard was 802.11b. Standards that have come after this are just updated versions within the 802.11 family. The whole setup for the premise of wireless technology goes back to a 1985 FCC ruling that released the ISM band for unlicensed use. It wasn’t until 1999 that a trade association known as the Wi-Fi Alliance was formed. The group now offers official certification of most wireless devices.

Security Concerns

Security has always been a concern when it comes to wireless technology. To address these concerns, the Wi-Fi Alliance created an optional Wi-Fi Protected Setup in 2007. It was meant to be an alternative to the encryption method WPA2 for users not familiar with other wireless security. Security is a good thing, but keeping track of passwords for every device can be monumental task in itself. Fortunately, WPS doesn’t require another long password for you to memorize, since writing down a password defeats the purpose of having one in the first place. Unfortunately, a major security flaw was discovered in late 2011. It is now recommended that you turn off the WPS feature on your wireless devices, if possible.

What It Means for You

Technical updates come and go, but it really doesn’t mean much until the new technology filters down to something you can use. That’s really the point of any technology. The tech gurus can come up with the fastest, most powerful wireless technology in the world, but it doesn’t have any real benefit until your wireless devices catch up too. Expect new devices using the upgraded 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard to hit stores early next year. However, it wouldn’t be that much of a surprise if some devices that are upgraded to the new standard arrive in time for the holiday season, since this tends to be a busy time for tech sales. The main advantage of the new Wi-Fi standard is more channels, high throughput in the 5 GHz band, high-density modulation, and increased streaming capabilities. This just means you’ll be able to do cooler stuff with your wireless devices.

Every time you turn around there’s some update or another with the technology you use. As a general rule, an upgrade in any technology you use on a regular basis just means that you’ll be able to do more with your devices than you did before. It also means you’ll be buying new wireless devices soon. After all, 802.11n is so 2011.

Rob Call is a tech-savvy freelance blogger, who writes about new technology upgrades and gadgets. He recommends checking out information on 4 G, to make sure you are up-to-date with all your wireless internet needs.

If you’re on a tight budget, then chances are you haven’t been to the movie theater in a while. Rising costs of ticket prices and snack foods have made going to the movies a fairly pricey affair, with the average cost hovering somewhere between 20.00 USD and 30.00 USD per film. A lot of people are turned off by the cinema experience anyway: crowds of people, sometimes uncomfortable seating, and sudden fluctuations in volume. Some people just prefer the luxury of viewing a new release movie in a private setting.

But renting a movie isn’t exactly cheap either. If you have Netflix, then your rental cost is fairly low, but those of us who travel a lot don’t necessarily have the luxury of Netflix’s “by-the-mail” service. The Redbox was a good answer to the rental dilemma, offering movies for a dollar per night, but these purchase-centers are not necessarily available in every area. The practice of renting a movie also carries the risk of late-fees and damage associated with it. If you accidentally scratch a disc or spill something onto it, then you’re responsible for the full purchase price of the movie. You’re also under pressure to return the title to the rental store on time, to ensure that you aren’t docked extra cash for keeping the film too long. There hasn’t really been a way to combat these high costs and risks, until now.

CRACKLE

Crackle is the brainchild of Sony Entertainment. This application is a quick and easy install with no sign up or registration requirements. All of Crackle’s movies can be streamed and “saved for later” via the queue. You still get basic options too like rewind, fast forward, and “scene skip”. Maneuvering through the application is simple too. Gentle finger swipes and taps will allow you to scroll easily through lists of films.

The layout of the app is also easy to follow and navigate. Simple headers at the bottom of the screen will let you differentiate between movies, your queue, and even a “featured films” page. There is also a nifty viewing history sub-section that will show you which films you have already seen. The one downside is that Crackle doesn’t offer any organization in terms of categorizing its movies by genre or likeness to other shows. When you search for a movie, it must be done alphabetically as that is all the application offers at this time.

Crackle will give you a variety of free movies streamed directly to your iOS device and even on a 3G network I experienced no slow-down or buffering when I tested the app out. What Crackle won’t give you though is access to any “new movies”. In fact, the chief complaint about the service is that it lacks any “modern titles”. Most of the films you will find on Crackle are pre-2000′s, which doesn’t appeal to anyone looking for recent titles. However, if you’re just looking to enjoy a movie regardless of age, then this is the perfect app for you. The best part about Crackle is that it’s 100 percent free with no rental fees or subscription costs.

Google. Does it ever seem like Google controls the world? Or at least the way you search through it? It’s very possible that it ...

Google. Does it ever seem like Google controls the world? Or at least the way you search through it? It’s very possible that it does. Or perhaps, it at least manipulates what you see or don’t see. I don’t know if it actively manipulates anything, but just the fact that we can manipulate Google means that the Goog can very easily manipulate us.

Now that I’m done making Google sound like the evil darkness in Mordor, let’s talk about the cool things that Google can do, more specifically, Google Chrome. Some think only smartphones can add easier usability to their lives. This is not the case.

For a long time I had no idea that Google had little software widgets that are submitted by programmers (companies, whoever creates them really) and offers us the ability to have easy to use programs right in our browser. There are pieces for every different kind of user. Creative user. Business user. Or just someone who wants something to make little tasks easier.

They are called Google Chrome Apps, and you can find them at https://chrome.google.com/webstore/category/home.

From there you can browse the many different pieces that Google Chrome has to offer. I did some looking and there really are plenty of Apps for anyone interested. Here are just a few that I came across that I thought were interesting and not your typical App.

EverNote Clearly

Let’s say you are reading a blog on a website that has plenty of visual distractions like ads and pictures and moving pieces. All you want is to read the blog that seemed interesting enough for you to click on, well, EverNote Clearly to the rescue.

“Clearly makes blog posts, articles and webpages clean and easy to read. Save them to Evernote to read anywhere.”

All you have to do is click and everything because easy and simple and much less complicated for your eyes. Customize, organize and save your different ways of reading without too much stuff distracting you.

Distraction Deterrent

This is a very interesting App that helps keep you focused on your work. Certain websites such as Facebook are already in the Apps categories, so when you go to that website the App “Forces you to pause before loading a distracting website.”

A page pops up saying that you have to wait 20 seconds before entering the page, AND are you sure you should be looking at the website? It could be just enough to make you close the tab and go back to work.

Collusion for Chrome

“Visualize the invisible websites that track you.” That’s what it says. Basically thousands of companies and organizations work secretly to gather your personal data and see how you move around, browse and use the Internet. This app graphs the movement of your data from the websites and trackers that take your information and show you in real time where it’s going.

These have to be the most interesting Apps I came across. I don’t think I want to know, though…

Apps are not just for your Apple or Android, you can easily use these Apps through your Google browser. Be productive or find an easier way to share movies. Whatever you want to do, there is probably a Google Chrome App for it.

It has been long time since we needed a definition given to a form of Internet Service. We hear companies like Verizon Wireless throw around three letter acronyms all the time, and the newest one is LTE. LTE stands for Long-Term Evolution, but its entire name is “3GPP Long-Term Evolution for the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System”. This would actually be 3GPP UMTS LTE. So it is no wonder why wireless firms are marketing the service as simply LTE.

Now that we know what the letters mean what is the service all about. LTE is less a type of Internet service and more a standard in which wireless service can be measured. Another way to look at it would be that LTE replaces what is currently being referred to as 3G networks by T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and other Internet Providers. The upgrade from 3G is significant and is exemplified by the Verizon LTE service available in Dallas, Texas. This service has been up long enough to get a broad selection of data that shows definitively that the network offers consistent average downloads of 15 Mbps and an average upload speed of 1.5 Mbps. By way of example the older Verizon 3G network had download speeds around 1 Mbps and could upload at about 0.67 Mbps. This is an enormous leap in service and beats its competitors hands down. AT&T also has an LTE offering; however it has not been in service long enough or with a significant service load to offer enough data to make any determinations on average speeds.

So what does LTE really mean for wireless customers? Remember ads showing iPhone users browsing the Internet while they had a conversation on the same phone? While it is true that this is possible, have you ever tried it? On a 3G network it is absolutely possible to do this but after having tried it I couldn’t recommend it to anyone. The bandwidth on 3G networks that is available to users is simply too narrow to actually enjoy web surfing while on a call. For myself I would say that I don’t enjoy web browsing on my 3G network at all. LTE will change all of this. It is 15 times faster than the 3G network.

How Does LTE Work?

One secret behind the massive technological leap being made by LTE is the use of two separate interfaces, one for uploads and one for downloads. By using separate connections the service can optimize each differently to offer the best service going both ways.

For uploads LTE utilizes, get ready for it, Discrete Fourier Transform Spread Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access or DFTS-OFDMA. This is a mouthful and if you want to know more about this scheme you can visit the Wiley Library and read their PDF report here. The article is so technical that even I had a hard time getting through it so I will summarize what I think is important. The upload scheme of DFT-OFDMA allows the carrier to accept an upload source that is far weaker than the download source. The speed at which data is transferred is of course greatly reduced but so are the power requirements. Imagine if you phone had to send a signal to a wireless tower with the same strength that the tower was sending a signal to your phone. With this “dual channel” set up the data streams can be configured in various ways to make up for the power differential without lowering service quality. In a nutshell your battery will last much longer.

LTE downlinks use Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access or OFDMA. This interface is very different from the wireless connections that have been used since the late 1980′s. In fact the more advanced networks that predate LTE are simply more powerful versions of the same old architecture. OFDMA requires that a “smart antennae” technology called MIMO be used. This is Multiple Input Multiple Output and it allows for more than one connection from a single device. It makes sense that if your phone was using 3 simultaneous connections to a network that it would be faster and more stable. This is the same technology that wireless routers use now and also shatters the future limitations of bandwidth available to consumers. Imagine if the only limitation in upload and download speeds were the device being used.

LTE can be confusing, and with its current limited deployment not much is being done to raise public awareness of how revolutionary the service really is. As the big companies such as Verizon and AT&T begin to aggressively roll this offering out we will begin to hear and learn more. For now LTE is the best public offering of wireless internet or phone service on the market.

This article is based upon real time scenario when my Mac OS X Mini becomes inaccessible due to some system file corruption and I ...

This article is based upon real time scenario when my Mac OS X Mini becomes inaccessible due to some system file corruption and I was not able to reach to the private and confidential data existing on my Mac volumes. This unexpected event gave me a lot of nightmares as my Mac contains some of my favourite movie collections. And not only movies, but I have a dedicated partition which holds huge stock of snapshots of college time including many of the wonderful moments spend with my close friend. Apart from my personal data, there is another partition which holds the official balance sheets of my office which is the most important data to me than anything. I imagined how my reputation would be harmed when I will disclose to my colleagues about the data loss.

Before Mac system, I used to work upon PC which I purchased back in 2009. Even though I used PC for a long period of time I never ever faced a data loss situation. Neither do I care about one. So, this was my first experience of losing valuable data on a computer system and unfortunately it was my one year old Mac. Macs are smart computer systems but I do believe that software malfunction or hardware failure may let you down anytime.

Anyway, I Google it on how to recover data from a dead Mac and got to know about some very useful information. I landed on an article which suggested recovering data from a dead Mac using a PC. Both the Mac hard drive and the PC are connected with a firewire cable. I wondered I have both a PC and a Mac, only thing which I am missing is a firewire cable. The article further suggested to connect both the systems with a firewire cable and run Mac data recovery software for Widows based platform system.

The steps performed are as below:

Connect Mac hard drive with PC using a firewire cable.

Run Mac data recovery software on windows host. Once the Mac hard drive is connected, the software automatically detects the hard drive and displays it in the interface. The software easily recognizes any HFS, HFS+, HFSX & HFS Wrapper file system based Mac volumes.

Select the Mac mini drive or volumes and proceed with the recovery option.

The software scans the volumes and the entire hard drive and lists all the recoverable files.

It also gives you the option to select your desired recovered files to be saved. You can check and uncheck the files manually.

After the selection has been done, hit the recover button and the software will ask you for the desired location for the files to be saved.

I was overwhelmed by the functioning of Mac recovery software on Windows. It recovered my essential documents, media files including tons of snapshots, movies and songs. One more thing that joyed me was I handled the whole situation by myself and without seeking any technical advice or support. Stellar Phoenix Mac Recovery on Windows is a complete Do-It-Yourself software that does brings in good results.

As a small business you need to do everything in your power to command the attention of potential customers. After all, you can’t leverage ...

As a small business you need to do everything in your power to command the attention of potential customers. After all, you can’t leverage the same marketing strengths as larger organizations, such as massive advertising budgets, existing brand recognition, and widespreadproduct visibility. Instead you need to rely on the strengths small businesses uniquely hold, the most powerful of these being your businesses’ story.

And there’s no better way to leverage your business’ story for marketing purposes than with a high quality press release.

Press Releases Provide Countless Benefits

A well written, widely distributed press release will provide a few immediate benefits for your small business, including increased attention (from both old and new customers), increased traffic to your business (resulting in higher sales), and the foundations of a positive relationship with the press.

While increased attention and increased traffic for your business will certainly create some immediate, tangible, positive effects, it’s the final benefit, developing a relationship with the press, that helps your business the most over the long term. By developing a positive relationship with the press you join the conversation, leading to a constant stream of increased exposure and a greater sense among readers you are an important part of their community.

But My Story’s too Small to be Important!

True, your business is probably far too small to serve millions of customers,to earn billions of dollars in revenues, to plant hundreds of thousands of trees to offset carbon emissions, or to perform any other seemingly “newsworthy” feat. But thankfully the power of your press release has nothing to do with the size of your story. The power of your press release lies in the emotional content of your story, and journalists have known for a long time that smaller “human interest” stories provide a much greater emotional payload than stories of large-scale corporate good deeds.

As long as your press release provides its readers with an emotional connection to you and your business, it doesn’t matter how small you believe your story to be.

Writing Your Press Release Will Be Easy

To write an effective press release you simply need to identify the most emotionally powerful element of your story. Instead of trying to tease out what you think the most objectively “impressive” element of your story is, simply ask yourself which part of the story you feel strongest about. What makes you feel the most excited? The most frightened? The most hopeful? The angriest? Pick the single strongest emotion your story stirs within you and use that emotion, and the circumstances creating it, as the focal point of your press release.

Keep your press release short, keep it on target, and trust that whatever provides you with the most powerful emotional reaction will draw your readers in just as effectively.

Stop Fearing Journalists

After you complete your press release you need to submit it to journalists, and if those journalists like what you’ve written, they will either feature it in its entirety, or they will write a story about it.

Journalists represent some of the most overworked, overstressed people on the plant. They need to meet impossible deadlines with high impact content, and they need to sift through a huge stack ofinquiries every day just to find the few stories worth featuring within their publication. When you provide a journalist with a powerful story that they can simply plug into their publication you make their lives much, much easier.

You see- when you send in high quality press releases you aren’t burdening journalists, you’re doing them a favor, so never fear taking this last step to share your story with the world.

Bioethics is the study of controversial questions that arrive due to the options given to us through ever advancing biology and medicine. Just because we can do something, should we do it?

There are always issues in the news where something like traffic pollution is costing lives more than ever (so should we just cut oil refining completely to save lives?), or that shale gas isn’t as innocent as its harvesting companies would like you to think it is (so should be avoid using companies that harvest gas this way?).

These issues have arisen purely because we have developed the ability to make them an option. There are clear arguments for these things but there are equally valid arguments against them too.

But what are the biggest issues in bioethics?

Abortion

Induced abortion is one of the most controversial topics and debates in bioethics. Pro-life groups say that abortion is never ok. Pro-choice groups say that women should always have the choice. The safe option seems to be to side with the pro-choice groups but it is far more complicated; for example, when does a sensible choice to terminate a pregnancy cross the line into something like sex-selective abortion. Equally, if you support pro-life groups, you may find it hard to argue that a rape victim should be forced by law to have the baby.

GM Food

With food shortages around the world, being able to genetically modify food in order to stem world hunger may seem like a great idea. Some argue that artificially increased yields will solve the food crisis, while others say there is plenty of food to go around and that the problem lies in politics and distribution issues. Add into this the fact that there have been many adverse health effects rightly or wrongly attributed to GM foods along the way and you have a terribly hot topic.

Euthanasia

Suicide is illegal in most countries. Voluntary euthanasia is legal in some countries. Involuntary euthanasia is basically murder everywhere. The euthanasia debate is really tricky as on one hand you have people’s right to be in control of their own life, and on the other side you have people who feel that making euthanasia legal can result in deaths that could have been avoided with proper treatment and pain relief.

Moral Status of Animals

Do you think animals should have the same rights as us in regards to their right to life? Should their lives and environment be protected no matter what? Some say animals have no concept of their own life worth, others disagree. A lot of the world’s food comes from animals, meaning that their moral status is an extremely important debate.

Embryonic Stem Cell Research

Injecting stem cells into animals (or just in test tubes) has been proven to help regenerate or at least encourage cells to grow, even into entire organs. Obviously this would offer incredible opportunities for research, but the counter argument revolves around the alarming fact that to get embryonic stem cells you need to first create an embryo and then destroy it.

What is the most important bioethical debate for you?

Russian social-media has been going crazy after a watch mysteriously vanished from Patriarch Kirill I’s wrist, this week.

On Wednesday night, astute net-surfers observed that The Patriarch, sat leaning on a table with a polished and highly reflective surface, could clearly be seen wearing a watch. The problem was that the watch could only be seen in the reflection and was nowhere to be seen on the leader of the Russian Orthodox Church’s wrist.

Stranger still, a quick search of the web revealed a cached version of an identical image, except, this time, the watch was also clearly sill on his wrist. A longer search further revealed that there were several other images, where the watch vanished into thin air after an update of the website.

Criticism was quick to be aimed at the Patriarchy, as they claimed all content on its website was untouched and original. Evidence suggested that not only had they been proven false, but that they had deliberately edited the photos, due to recent attention towards the clergy’s luxury lifestyle.

The next day, the Patriarchy offered an explanation placing the blame on a secular worker in charge of their web content. She was named as a 24 year old woman who engaged in a ridiculous mistake.

This is not the first time that the Patriarch’s choice of time-piece has caused a public scandal. When he visited the Ukraine in the summer of 2009, his lavish watch caused similar outrage.

Just as the Russian Orthodox Church were emphasising the virtues of an austere and simple lifestyle, in order combat the global economic crisis, the Patriarch was snapped wearing a Breguet watch, worth somewhere between £2,500 and £3,000.

On the more recent outrage, The Church has claimed that the timepiece was either a gift from a friend, with its true value unknown to the Patriarch, or a hoax.

Just what kind of hoax they mean is unclear. Presumably they mean the Patriarch bought it for a couple of pennies, while on holiday in Spain. Perhaps more likely, is the idea that it is a joke watch, given to the Patriarch as a prank, due to its invisible (yet reflective) qualities.

Over the years, patriarch Kirill and other high members of The Russian Orthodox Church have been connected with several other expensive commodities, including cars, swimming pools and property. They have also been linked with the tobacco and alcohol trade.

The Patriarch has said that he is the target of a propaganda campaign, organized by anti-Church groups in the country.

When was the last time you read a newspaper? Not your dad’s newspaper or one someone else at work threw away, but when was ...

When was the last time you read a newspaper? Not your dad’s newspaper or one someone else at work threw away, but when was the last time you had a newspaper delivered to your home and you sat down and read it?

Chances are if you did have a newspaper subscription you’ve cancelled it, and if you do have one chances are you’ll cancel it within the next 2 years.

The Internet has changed the way we get our news, that’s a fact. We can have 24-hour breaking news updates on wars overseas, celeb meltdowns, political elections and business ventures without having to wait for the morning headlines in the paper.

Even social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter are solidifying the fact that newspapers are slowly but surely becoming insignificant.

On Twitter you can “follow” newspapers, journalists, broadcasters and television networks to get your news on your Twitter timeline, making the need to buy a newspaper irrelevant when you can get it for free online.

Looking for Internet solutions

Believe it or not, there are still thousands upon thousands of Americans who live without Internet access – those are probably the people that still read newspapers. Sad as it is, most cable and DSL providers don’t service rural areas leaving them out of the loop on Twitter trends, Facebook status updates and breaking news from all over the world.

If you live out in a rural area, there is a solution that doesn’t involve outdated dial-up Internet service– satellite Internet.

Satellite Internet and newspapers keep rural communities informed

Satellite Internet has been on the rise in rural areas thanks to its broad service range and broadband speeds. Satellite Internet heavyweight companies like HughesNet has been developing satellite technology and creating innovative practices for decades.

Interestingly enough, rural areas and small towns are where newspapers aren’t getting as hard-hit as big cities. Why? Small-town newspapers have small-town news. The 7-year-old championship Tee Ball game and pictures from the Knights of Columbus fish fry make the front page, not the ongoing presidential election or gas price crisis.

You aren’t going to find those small-town stories online, whereas most big-city newspapers’ stories are on every major news outlet Web site.

Can rural areas have the best of both worlds?

Rural areas can have their cake and eat it too it sounds like – they can have newspapers with unique content and get social media access with satellite Internet from an experienced provider like HughesNet.

Satellite Internet might not have the glitzy appeal that cable providers do, but when you check out the things that HughesNet is doing, like launching a brand-new $400 million satellite, you’ll soon see why satellite Internet is glitzy in its own right.

When a helicopter, armored vehicle, or tank crashes into a large body of water, the weight of the engine will quickly cause it to invert and begin to sink. Soldiers who are caught within the vehicle must be capable of exiting immediately in order to avoid drowning or being crushed by the military hardware. A person caught within such a vehicle may be dizzy, concussed, confused, or partially trapped by seating harnesses and safety belts. Furthermore, as water rushes in, the urge top panic can be overwhelming, and few people are capable of high-function decision making after several seconds of having to hold their breath. Underwater escape lighting is a new technological feature that allows for easy access to an emergency exit in times of extreme emergency.

Military Personnel

Military personnel in the United States and the United Kingdom constantly test and re-test emergency escape scenarios in order to determine the location, efficiency, and operation of emergency escape exists. Tests done by both military outfits tend to have several dozen different hatches or doors that must be opened in the case of an emergency escape; prior to the late 1990s, there was no standardization of these exists. What’s more, tests indicated that jettisoning the hatch, doors, or windows would not provide enough information to evacuating personnel that the way was open and clear, so that in an emergency these pilots, crew, or passengers might waste precious time attempting to utilize the exit even as it had already been opened.

LED Units

For the past three decades, LED units had been put in military hardware ranging from stealth bombers to armored motorcycles. These light units are bright enough to be seen quickly by a person even in pitch-black conditions, but in an underwater environment, they can fail to penetrate more than a few feet of clouded or turbulent water. This creates the very real problem of having to flee from a sinking vessel without knowing where the closest exit is. In the past ten years, underwater escape lighting has become a valuable tool to crewmen and women who could find themselves stuck in a life-threatening situation.

Emergency Exit

Unlike an LED unit that is powered by electricity, underwater escape lighting is activated by contact with water itself. The illumination given off is different from an LED unit and can be seen from distances as great as four meters (twelve feet) in water that is opaque or turbulent. Participants in test subjects, furthermore, proved capable of recognizing the light within as little as 1.2 seconds or as much as 2.4 seconds of its trigger, meaning that almost no time is wasted in the process. The result is that an emergency exit or panel with underwater escape lighting will be lit up brightly as soon as it comes into contact with water (or, in some cases, as soon as a certain mechanical trigger registers the impact of an improved explosive device). This technology has a profound impact in the way that military hardware will be designed for combat conditions in which a rapid exit is necessary.
