More and more, in my little one horse town, people are coming by with their laptops or desktops with Vista so hosed up I have NO clue how to fix it. :(

It seems, in most cases, it dies a slow death......things begin to stop working, one after the other. Then it slows (slower than it usually is without problems) to a crawl, then finally, they can't get online anymore. This is when they call or come by.

Is this typical/common progression of corruption with Vista? It is so completely annoying to most without problems with all the questions....then the problems with "so-called" vista compatible programs.

I won't use it, ever. I have one downgrading (once we receive the cd in the mail) and the old man that came to pick up his machine tonight said this is the second time he's been through this (his wife was angry the first time around as she could not understand the tech guy from Dell, which is why he brought it to me...) and he wanted to know if he could buy XP for it.

Just seems to me to be a rip off because you can't choose, you are forced to have Vista installed in order to get a new laptop or desktop. Then you have to turn around and spend more $$$ to buy an OS you can live with, if your new purchase will take XP.

Maybe I'm chiming in late on this one....but this really sucks!

I think I'm seriously gonna check out a mac!

Any thoughts? What is your experience with Vista? And does SP1 really fix anything???

Just recently I almost caught a virus off a website but Kapersky stopped it before it could infect my computer. In a panic I shut down Firefox quickly. Later when I restarted Firefox it gave me a dialog box message saying "Firefox shut down....do you want to restore the previous session or start a new session".

Not thinking, I choose "restore previous session" and Firefox took me right back to the offending website.

Two questions here;

1. Despite cleaning my system with CCleaner, how did Firefox know to take me back to the previous session (website), is the info stored somewhere, where CCleaner couldn't get at it??

2. How do I, if I can, disable this choice that Firefox gives me to restore or start a new session if it shuts down unexpectedly.

thanks in advance

The Alstare Suzuki rider won race one, beating the Yamaha Motor Italia of Noriyuki Haga by just 0.058 seconds.

Championship leader Troy Bayliss was third on his Ducati Xerox, with nearest rival Carlos Checa down in eighth.

Felipe Massa took a comfortable victory in the Turkish Grand Prix despite Lewis Hamilton's attempt to take the fight to Ferrari with an inventive strategy.

The McLaren driver passed Massa for the lead in the middle of the race but his three-stop strategy succeeded only in beating Kimi Raikkonen to second place.

Massa, on a conventional two-stop plan like his team-mate, had pace in hand to keep ahead of Hamilton.

But the Englishman did cut Raikkonen's championship lead to seven points.

And Hamilton, who is tied on points with Massa but behind him in the standings on win count-back, will be encouraged by his McLaren's new-found competitiveness.

"I'm thrilled to have come second from third [on the grid]," Hamilton said.

"We knew it was going to be tough to challenge the Ferraris. We were hoping to get some points and finishing in the top five was good.

"But the balance of the car was good and I kept pushing and pushing, so I'm happy."

Massa, who won for the third time in a row at Istanbul Park, was always out of reach of Hamilton, but even being able to compete with one of the Ferraris was a step forward for McLaren.

Hamilton was in aggressive mood from the start of the race, moving up a place from his third spot on the grid on the run to the first corner and tracking Massa until the McLaren's first stop on lap 16.

That was three laps earlier than Massa's first stop, but what betrayed McLaren's strategy was that the team put only a small amount of fuel in the car at that time.

The thinking appeared initially to be to enable the car to run lighter - and therefore faster - and try to pass Massa.

The team would have known the Brazilian was out of reach, but Raikkonen, having a rare off weekend, looked vulnerable if Hamilton could gain enough time.

But team boss Ron Dennis said after the race that McLaren were forced into a three-stop strategy because of concern about the Bridgestone tyres' durability on Hamilton's car.

Turkish Grand Prix result:
1. Felipe Massa (Brz) Ferrari
2. Lewis Hamilton (GB) McLaren-Mercedes
3. Kimi Raikkonen (Fin) Ferrari
4. Robert Kubica (Pol) BMW Sauber
5. Nick Heidfeld (Ger) BMW Sauber
6. Fernando Alonso (Spa) Renault
7. Mark Webber (Aus) Red Bull-Renault
8. Nico Rosberg (Ger) Williams-Toyota

Championship standings:
1. Kimi Raikkonen (Fin) Ferrari 35 pts
2. Felipe Massa (Brz) Ferrari 28
3. Lewis Hamilton (GB) McLaren-Mercedes 28

Just wondered if any of you knew of a place to get them cheap so that I can save the customers the most money. I feel sorry for the last lady who came....she said, "I called Acer and they want to reformat it, but I will still be just as miserable with Vista....and they won't warrant my computer if I put XP on it....what do I do I'm so angry!!!" I told her to call Acer back, check if her system will take XP (that stupid laptop I bought would not, which is why it went BACK!)
She called me excited and said YES!!! it will take it, and she found that her warranty was up in one month anyway....

Sooooooooooooooooooo, we need a copy so that she can have a wonderful computing experience again!

While conducting online banking this evening I saw a link that was labeled Protect Yourself From Identity Theft. Identity theft occurred to me about a year ago. Luckily, I was sitting at my computer when the incident occurred. I received a notice from Ebay stating that I had won an auction for a notebook computer. It turned out that someone had hijacked my Ebay account which gave them my credit card info.

I immediately contacted my credit card companies and froze the accounts. Next I contacted Ebay fraud section. I was quick enough that the thief had not finalized the purchase.

I permanently closed the Ebay account and had new credit cards issued. That same day I enrolled in LifeLock a company that protects you against Identity Theft and insures you against damages up to one million dollars. It cost me $12 a month.

Back to the reason for this post. The link took me to a FDIC site video that contains some very good information for the non-tech computer user. It also contains instructions on what you should do if your identity is stolen.
