AT&T Activates over 1 Million iPhone 4S’, Best Ever in iPhone History

IPhone pioneer exclusive carrier AT&T announced that it has activated over one million iPhone 4S’ smartphones in just five days of its launch. This has been expected enough as the carrier recently processed more than 200,000 pre-orders of iPhone 4S within 12 hours before it was opened for public consumption. Interestingly, this cemented iPhone 4S’ status as the most successful iPhone launch to-date.

In addition for another milestone of AT&T and iPhone, during the third quarter over half of smartphones activated were iPhones. So we’re wondering why T-Mobile isn’t interested on hosting iPhone on its network?

Could it be AT&T’s HSPA+ support and the simultaneous support for phone-based voice and data services is the main reasons why consumers are buying the new iPhones from the carrier? And maybe that’s why president and CEO of AT&T, Ralph de la Vega stated, “It’s no surprise that customers are clamoring for iPhone 4S and they want it to run on a network that lets them download twice as fast as competitors.”

Samsung seeks iPhone 4S sales ban in Australia, Japan

Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said on Monday that it had filed for sales bans on Apple Inc.'s iPhone 4S in Australia and Japan, escalating a legal battle with its archrival and biggest client.

The move came after Samsung filed preliminary injunction motions against the latest iPhone in France and Italy less than a day after the device was unveiled, claiming the product infringed its patents.

Since April, Apple and Samsung have been locked in an acrimonious legal battle in 10 countries involving smartphones and tablet computers as they jostle for the top spot in the fast-growing markets. Apple is also Samsung's biggest customer, buying mainly chips and displays.

Samsung's latest salvo came after the South Korean electronics giant suffered a series of setbacks in its ongoing legal battles with Apple.

Apple has scored preliminary injunctions against some Samsung products in Australia, Germany and the Netherlands, and further seeks to block sales of Samsung models in the United States, the key smartphone battleground.

Samsung saw its request for a sales ban against some Apple products rejected by a Dutch court on Friday.

Samsung said on Monday that it had appealed the Australian court's decision to grant a preliminary injunction on the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

"We do respect Apple as our biggest client but we won't stand idly by, letting them infringe on our interest," Samsung Electronics CEO Choi Gee-sung was quoted as saying by a spokesperson last week.

The president and chief operating officer of Samsung Electronics, Lee Jae-yong, left for the United States on Sunday to attend Apple's private memorial service for Steve Jobs, a spokeswoman for Samsung Group said.

Local media speculated that Lee may have a separate meeting with Apple CEO Tim Cook and discuss ways to resolve the intensifying legal row, but the spokeswoman denied the reports.

T-Mobile has released two brand new 4G Android phones into the market: the Samsung Galaxy S II and the HTC Amaze 4G. Tonight they launched the devices at a special event in New York City where the Black Keys performed. Both new devices are smartphone powerhouses backed by T-Mobile’s super fast 4G speeds. Both phones are also very sexy and very powerful and look like they are set to be T-Mobile’s star 4G phones, at least for the immediate future. The Samsung Galaxy S II has a beautiful 4.52″ Super AMOLED screen with an 800×480 resolution. It packs a (very fast) dual-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S3 processor with 1 GB of RAM. It runs Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread. The 4G offers a speed capacity of up to 42 Mbps. There’s an 8MP camera with flash, capable of taking 1080P HD video. There’s also a 2 MP front-facing camera, which is higher res than your run-of-the mill front-facing camera.

The HTC Amaze 4G has a 4.3″ qHD super LCD screen with a resolution of 960 x 540. Like the Galaxy S II, it’s packing the ever-so-powerful dual-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon S3 Processor and 1GB of RAM. It comes loaded with Android’s 2.3.4 Gingerbread and an HTC Sense 3.0 overlay. There’s also an 8MP rear camera with flash capable of 1080P HD video coupled with a 2 MP front-facing camera.

Two very different phones with similar specs; both very powerful and beautiful. The Amaze has a very smooth look and feel while the Galaxy S II looks sleek and professional. Considering how fast these phones are in terms of processor power and data speeds, you’d be unstoppable with either one! Both phones are now available from T-Mobile. The HTC Amaze 4G is available in black or white for $259.99 with a 2-year agreement. You can check out our previous hands-on with the HTC Amaze 4G. Meanwhile, the Galaxy S II is available for $229.99 with a 2-year agreement. This pricing is a bit on the pricey side, but these two handsets are the cream of the crop when it comes to 4G handsets.

What is different in popular Apple iOS 5….

Apple’s iOS 5 mobile operating system will be released in the next few hours. This latest update is compatible with most recent iterations of the Apple mobile line, including iPhones after the 3GS, iPods and the iPod Touch.
The update includes a new notification system reminiscent of Android, location-based reminders, BBM-alike iMessage and Twitter integration. There are over 200 other tweaks and updates to the OS as well, including upgrades to core apps such as Safari and Mail. Let’s have a look at the bigger changes in more detail.

Notification Center

The new Notification Center is definitely the most obvious change in iOS 5. The Apple OS now uses an Android-style notification system, where new notifications appear near the top of the display, instead of on a mid-screen box that must be closed. If you’d like to immediately open a notification, then you can do so by swiping over it, or if you don’t just wait a few seconds for it to be stored away.
You can access the notification center itself by swiping downwards from the status bar, just like on Android. New notifications are listed from the window that appears and grouped by app. You can then clear or open each notification individually, or clear all at once. There’s also room for an optional weather or stock display here, too.
The lock screen’s notifications have also been revised; now when you unlock your phone you’ll see all notifications that you’ve received since you last unlocked. You can swipe on any one of them in order to view that notification, directly from the lock screen.

iMessage

The other big feature in iOS 5 is the “BBM-killer”, iMessage. The encrypted instant messaging program gets many from its hints from BlackBerry Messenger, but provides a much more streamlined experience, thanks to the familiar SMS interface. As well as text, you’re also free to send videos, photos, contacts and locations. All in all, it’s a great free alternative to SMS, and should prove incredibly popular, particularly if as expected Apple releases a Mac or PC client in the future.

Location-Based Reminders

Now you can ask your iPhone to remind you of certain tasks when you arrive at or leave a certain location. It’s a perfect system for reminding yourself to pick up the kids on your way home, and comes crafted in that enviable Apple style to differentiate itself from similar reminder apps on the marketplace.

Twitter

Of course, it’s 2011 so we’re getting Twitter on our iPhones. The functionality is embedded into the operating system, allowing you to send relevant things to Twitter via a number of the built in applications, including URLs from Safari, photos from the Photos app, links from YouTube and locations from the Maps app. It’s not quite as good as the true system-wide availability found in Android, but does go a long way towards streamlining the Twitter experience on the iPhone.

Conclusion

All things considered, with these upgrades alone iOS 5 would be a no-brainer. Of course, there are far far more than just the four I’ve elucidated on here, so check iTunes later today, download iOS 5 and check them out for yourself!

Samsung delays Galaxy Nexus launch 'for Steve Jobs'

South Korea's Samsung Electronics said it has delayed the launch of a smartphone based on Google's latest Android operating system as a gesture of respect for legendary Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Samsung - the world's number two mobile phone maker - and Apple are at loggerheads in a series of patent lawsuits over the technology and design of smartphones and tablet computers.
The Korean company had been due to unveil a Galaxy Nexus smartphone using Google-backed Android software and designed to challenge Apple's market-leading iPhone at an event in San Diego on Tuesday.
"The launch was delayed because we thought it's not the right time to announce it following the passing of Steve Jobs," a spokesman for the company told AFP.
Jobs, 56, died on Wednesday after suffering from cancer.
Last week Apple unveiled its iPhone 4S, which will be available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Britain on October 14 and in another 22 countries including Italy from October 28.

But Samsung said it would seek a ban in France and Italy on sales of the new iPhone, citing what it called two patent infringements regarding mobile technology.
The South Korean firm also said it would file preliminary injunctions in other countries. Samsung will announce a new date and venue for its smartphone launch later.

LG Optimus LTE is yet another smartphone built for the single purpose of providing users with extremely high data transfer speeds, along with a fast and smooth Web browsing experience.

Officially introduced in South Korean, the handset's availability outside the country is yet to be determined, but the phone may be launched in other regions under different names and with slightly different specs.

Anyway, the LG Optimus LTE is touted Korea's first smartphone to offer 4G connectivity and HD capabilities.
LG collaborated with sister company LG Display to offer customers a smartphone with the highest resolution IPS display available on the market.

The Optimus LTE is delivered with a brilliant 4.5-inch display that provides advanced resolution, and is based on “True HD IPS” technology, which shows colors in their most natural tones.
“LG Optimus LTE is the first smartphone in Korea to offer vivid and clear HD content on a 4G network. Our goal is to be a leading player in LTE devices by continuously offering best-in-class products based on our LTE patents and know-how,” said Dr. Jong-seek Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company.

Furthermore, Optimus LTE is equipped with a powerful 1.5 GHz dual-core processor and runs Google's Android 2.3 Gingerbread operating system.
In addition, the smartphone comes with HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) capabilities that allows users to share multimedia content.
The device enables content sharing seamlessly through HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) and DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance).
The phone comes with a high capacity 1,830 mAh Li-Ion battery, but the Korean manufacturer has yet to reveal its autonomy.

Windows Phone boss Andy Lees sees the latest version of Microsoft’s mobile operating system as the answer to big problems facing iOS and Android, the two most popular and market dominant mobile operating systems in the world.

In an interview with The Seattle Times, Lees pitched Windows Phone 7.5 — affectionately known as “Mango” — as the answer to consumers’ prayers. “Over the next 12, 18, 24 months, I can see a lot of stars lining up,” Lees said of Microsoft’s emerging mobile platform.

Where Google and Apple are failing, Microsoft is excelling according to Lees, Microsoft’s president of the Windows Phone division. Regarding the iPhone and iOS, Lees says Apple’s latest handset gives Microsoft a gap to fill. “I think, from an end user’s experience on the software, there’s a lot of interesting reviews written comparing us to iOS 5 and the amount that we’ve got done in 11 months — so some people (are) making comparisons of pace,” Lees responded when asked if Apple missed an opportunity with the iPhone 4S. He continued, “From a pure hardware perspective, I was surprised they’re not giving the consumer more choice. People want a variety of different things.”

AT&T says that it received more than 200,000 preorders for the iPhone 4S, while Apple's Web site no longer promises a delivery on October 14.

Apple and U.S. carrier partners AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon Wireless all began accepting preorders for the iPhone 4S at 12:01AM Pacific time on Friday, October 7. AT&T's online store was overwhelmed instantly, and many consumers complained of difficulty placing orders for several hours. By noon on Friday, AT&T said that more than 200,000 preorders were placed for the iPhone 4S. AT&T said Apple's latest smartphone was seeing "extraordinary demand."

The iPhone 4S was also available directly from Apple's Web store. Throughout the day on Friday, Apple indicated that the iPhone 4S would be delivered to those ordering it on Friday, October 14.

A check of Apple's Web store on Saturday morning shows that all variants of the device won't ship for one to two weeks--meaning Apple has sold through the initial stock available to first-day buyers. Apple didn't say how many devices had be preordered through its site.

Sprint and Verizon Wireless have not indicated how many preorders were placed for the device through their Web sites. Verizon's site indicates that some models, such as the white and black 64GB models, which cost $399, are still available for October 14 delivery. The less expensive models, such as the $199 16GB version, are showing delivery dates of October 21.

Sprint's Web site says that it is sold out of the 16GB iPhone 4S online, though it will be available in stores on October 14. The 32GB and 64GB versions are still available for delivery on October 14 or October 15.

AT&T's Web site more closely matches Apple's. Orders placed through AT&T's web site Saturday indicate that the device will not ship for two to three weeks, depending on the model. The more expensive 64GB version is still available, but the lowest-cost 16GB model is not.

The iPhone 4S has a dual-core 1GHz A5 processor; 8 megapixel camera with autofocus, flash, and 1080p HD video capture; HSPA+/CDMA, Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth 4.0 radios; Siri personal assistant, and iOS 5. It maintains the same size, shape, design, and appearance of the iPhone 4.

The 16GB model costs $199, the 32GB model costs $299, and the 64GB model costs $399.

Qualcomm’s S4: One mobile chip to rule all networks

2011-10-08T19:32:00.001+05:30

Technorati Tags: Qualcomm,Snapdragon,paper,features,benefits,performance,requirements,HSPA,CMDA,handset,devices,Apple,supports,CDMA,Verizon,Krait,memory,times,Scorpion,improvement,activities,Adreno,Direct,Microsoft,data,battery,life,Nexus,processor,steps,generation,Texas,NVidia,advantage,circuits,makers,providers,Instruments,modem,graphics,smartphones

Qualcomm’s newest Snapdragon S4 chips are expected next year and will be the first to support all of the major 2G, 3G and 4G networks with a single integrated modem. The company released a white paper on Friday outlining the features and benefits of the upcoming Snapdragon S4 mobile processors, which will combine advances in computing and graphics performance with reduced power requirements.

The multi-core 1.5 to 2.5 GHz chips will be manufactured using a 28 nanometer process, which packs more circuits into a smaller chip, reduces heat and power requirements.
The integrated modem will support numerous network types: LTE, HSPA, GSM, CMDA, EV-DO and more. This means handset makers will have the flexibility to use the S4 in devices for different network providers. Qualcomm took a similar approach with the MDM 6600 chip that powers the Apple iPhone 4; it supports CDMA and GSM networks, even though Apple created specific iPhone 4 models for both AT&T and Verizon.
The new Krait CPU uses dual-channel memory and boasts a 1.6 times performance boost over Qualcomm’s Scorpion CPU while enjoying a 25 to 40 percent power saving improvement. I expect that mobile devices built on this chip will still have to be charged daily in general, as we’ll just use the faster devices for more activities.
The Adreno 225 GPU will be supported, offering a 50 percent boost to graphics processing power. It also supports Direct X 9.3 for Microsoft Windows 8
The modem supports simultaneous CDMA voice with LTE data and is designed to work in common frequencies between 700 MHz through 2600 MHz

Essentially the S4 and competing chips like it should provide a noticeable performance boost to mobile devices over the next 12 to 24 months while maintaining, or possibly improving, battery life. This power should correspond to higher resolution displays for advanced gaming and imaging applications.

I think back to the performance jump in my Nexus One; among the first smartphones with a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor. When it launched it felt like two steps ahead of the last generation of smartphones. Now, my venerable but trusty handset is getting lapped by handsets with speedy dual-core chips from Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and NVidia.

And when the S4 arrives in high-end devices, the same performance jump will happen again. I, for one, can’t wait to see the applications that take advantage of the power brought by the new silicon.

Apple iOS 5 vs. Windows Phone 7.5 Mango

Microsoft’s latest Windows Phone 7.5 OS, code-named Mango was launched around the same time Apple Inc.’s iOS 5 came into the market this fall. In this review of the mobile Operating systems launched by these big giants, we discuss their new features, improvements from earlier versions and see if apple or mango is sweeter.

New Features :

Windows Phone 7.5 Mango has several new features added to it. Some include a powerful search function, including voice-enabled and visual searches using Microsoft Bing, local searches with recommendations for nearby places and threads which combine the user’s text, IM and Facebook chat all into one conversation. Apple has also added a few interesting features like “PC-free” which enables iOS updates over the air and its loose-leaf paper-like Reminders App over the cloud.

Multitasking:

Windows Phone 7.5 Mango is the first mobile OS from Microsoft to offer true application multitasking. This seems to be the best improvement in Mango from earlier Windows OS versions although Apple has already mastered it before. So no more app-jumping. This enables you to run multiple apps at a time with no need to close to other running apps.So you cab tweet, email or be in Facebook all at the same time.

HTML 5:

Apple iOS 5 looks better than Windows Phone 7 Mango at HTML 5 Rendering. Windows Phone 7 gives HTML 5 at about 25 FPS but the Apple’s iOS 5, even in beta, managed to render the same page with 31 FPS.

Web Browser:

Microsoft has included IE9 in Windows Phone 7 Mango for faster web browsing and support for new HTML 5 web sites. Meanwhile, Apple’s advanced Mobile Safari has several new features including tabbed browsing which is lightning fast. It also features a Safari reader that allows user to save stories in it which can be synchronized in various devices. It also gets rid of irritating reviews, interrupting ads and other unnecessary content on the page to enable user to dive right into essential stuff.

Similar features

Although Microsoft is new into the mobile OS markets, the Apple seems to adding few of the features developed for Mango, into its iOS 5.

Improved notifications: Apple has built a notification center into iOS 5 which displays the notifications at the top of iOS which works in a similar way to how Windows Phone 7 operates.
Split Keyboard:
Apple has now built a split keyboard; separate for both hands, into iOS 5 s. This feature is strangely similar to an identical keyboard that Microsoft developed for Windows 7 recently.
Built-in Twitter: Apple, just as Microsoft, has integrated Twitter straight into iOS 5. You can tweet directly from Safari, Photos, Camera, YouTube or Maps.
Messaging improvements: As Windows introduced deeper incorporation of messaging services directly into its OS, Apple has also introduced “messages”, using which one can send unlimited text messages via Wi-Fi or 3G from the iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch to anyone who has an iDevice.

In view of the features and the trend in the market, both of these seems to give a tough fight to each other, although Apple iOS 5 has a upper hand and as Microsoft tries to stabilize itself in its new market of Windows Phones.

Great Tech Competition- Apple iPad 2 vs. HTC Jetstream

2011-10-08T09:15:00.001+05:30

Technorati Tags: htc,ipad,iphone,apple,jetstream,ipad2,an droid,droid bionic,steve jobs,htc jetstream,apple ipad2,tablets,market leader,cheap,price of ipad,launch,tech blog,ipad2 vs htc jetstream

When it comes to cellular enabled tablets for AT&T, the pickings are indeed slim with the Apple iPad 2 being the most highly respected name on their lineup. Well, the HTC Jetstream is flying in to make a name for itself as being the carrier’s very first tablet to feature next-generation 4G LTE connectivity. Indeed that’s a prevalent shining point for the Honeycomb flavored tablet, but when you look at its $849.99 no-contract price, it seems remarkably overpriced versus the comparable $730 32GB 3G-enabled version of the Apple iPad 2. There’s no arguing that they’re going to be the cream of the crop for moment on AT&T’s lineup, but which one should you fork over your hard earned money into?

Apple’s iPad 2 is a follow up of last year’s wildly successful version. On the other hand, the HTC Jetstream is a 10.1-inch tablet with Android Honeycomb and is one of the first devices compatible with AT&T’s “true 4G” LTE network.

Size, Weight & Display:

The first point of difference between the two tablets is size. The Jetstream has a 10.1 inch high definition WXGA awning with a resolution of 1280×800 pixels and 150 ppi compared to the iPad 2’s relatively smaller 9.7 inch back lit LED capacitive awning with a lower resolution of 1024×768 pixels and 132 ppi. However, one thing that the Jetstream cannot beat the iPad in is in terms of slimness. At 13mm, it is abundantly bulkier than its counterpart from Apple which, at 8.8 mm, is exceedingly thin. The iPad, at 609 grams is also much lighter, compared to Jetstream’s 709 grams. So, as far as portability is concerned, Apple’s iPad 2 has a decisive advantage.

Processor & Memory:

As far as processors are concerned, Jetstream outdoes the iPad, thanks to the fact that it comes with a 1.5GHzdual-core Snapdragon processor MSM8660 and has 1GB of RAM. On the other hand, iPad 2 runs on a 16GHz Apple Dual Core A5 processor with 512 MB of RAM.

Connectivity:

Coming to the connectivity options, both accessories are at par with each other. They both have Bluetooth and USB, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, A-GPS, 3G connectivity and HDMI. As already mentioned, the Jetstream will be accordant with AT&T’s 4G LTE network.

Camera:

If we compare the cameras installed by these devices, HTC’s Jetstream appears to be the clear winner. The iPad 2 has a 0.7MP rear camera (960×720 pixels) and a VGA front facing ballista for video calls. It supports 720 p video recording at 30fps. On the other hand, the Jetstream comes with both, an absorbing 8MB rear facing camera with bifold LED beam and auto focus, and a 1.3 MP camera up front. It also has 720 p video recording.

Apps:

However, when it comes to computer applications and apps, both devices are completely different. So while the iPad 2, running on Apple’s own iOS 4.3 boasts of apps and games like iMovie, FaceTime, Garage Band Apps, PhotoBooth, iBooks PDF reader, Office 2007 and Airplay, the HTC comes with Android’s 3.1 Honeycomb. It is Adobe beam accordant and has admission to the Android market. It also includes a vast array of Google apps and added features.

To conclude, HTC’s Jetstream and Apple’s iPad 2 come with their own sets of advantages and disadvantages. In fact, the Jetstream might also out do the iPad in certain fields. However, one major advantage that Apple has is in terms of its price. Compared to the iPad, Jetstream is much more expensive. It is because of this factor that chances of it wiping out the iPad completely are rare. In the end, Apple beats HTC in both, economy and popularity.

Motorola MILESTONE 2 Review

2011-10-08T09:00:00.001+05:30

Technorati Tags: motorola,motorola milestone 2,milestone 2,droid bionic,droid,android,smartphones,mobile,trendy,latest,mobile review

The Milestone 2 is Motorola’s successor to the successful Milestone. With the Milestone 2, Motorola aimed to fix what was wrong with the original Milestone and also keep the specs current and relevant. Announced in late 2010, it is their current flagship QWERTY device and features a slide out full four-row QWERTY keyboard. In a world of nearly identical keyboard-less slate Android devices, the Milestone 2 is one of the few modern high-end smartphones remaining aimed at people who are stubbornly clinging on to physical keyboard.

The specs read like a typical late 2010 high-end product. Powering the Android 2.2 (Froyo) device is a TI OMAP3630 chipset with a single core 1 GHz Cortex A8 processor and PowerVR SGX530 GPU. The device has 512MB RAM for running applications and 8GB internal flash storage for installing applications. A 1400mAh Li-Pol battery ensures the device runs from at least a couple of hours a day to two days depending on how heavily used.

Other features includes quad band GSM, dual band 3G HSDPA, accelerometer, proximity sensor, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, DLNA, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR with A2DP, GPS receiver and 5MP camera with auto-focus and dual LED flash (including support for Geo-tagging) and electronic compass. The microSDHC card slot supports cards up to 32GB (the maximum currently supported by the standard).

The rear of the phone features a 5 megapixel camera with dual LED flash. Like all phones, the lens itself is protected by a glass. The glass itself isn’t protected by a cover however. Opening the battery cover reveals the battery. Unfortunately the microSDHC slot isn’t hot-swappable as the battery is in the way.

The Milestone 2 looks and feels smaller than it is. It is slightly thicker than the keyboard-less Nokia N8, just a bit slimmer than HTC’s Desire Z and about the same as the QWERTY toting Nokia E7. Below is a comparison of the thickness of the Milestone 2 with other devices. From bottom to top: HTC Touch Pro 2, Motorola Milestone 2, Nokia N8, Samsung Galaxy Ace, Nokia 5630 and iPod Touch 4G

While the Milestone 2 has a reasonably sized battery, unfortunately I found that I am only able to eke out half a day worth of productivity before needing the charger. This is with Twitter and Gmail running in the background, pulling in data every couple of minutes. To be fair, most modern smartphones have poor battery life, but Android devices seem to suffer most from poor power management.

If you are in the market for an Android QWERTY phone, it is worth keeping in mind that the Milestone 2 is one of a few high-end Android devices that qualifies. There aren’t many alternatives – in fact the only I can think of currently is the HTC Desire Z. The Desire Z, while having a lower clocked processor, has proven itself as a great performer. Outside of the Android ecosystem, there is the newly released Nokia E7 which runs on Symbian^3 and the Windows Phone 7-powered HTC 7 Pro.

All in all, I can recommend the Milestone 2, with some caveats. It isn’t the best Android phone in the market in terms of performance nor is it in terms of features. Motorola hasn’t been the best manufacturer when it comes to keeping the software updated. The original Milestone for example has only just recently received Android 2.2 update. On the other hand, MOTOBLUR widgets are a nice touch, even if they are a bit ugly and the keyboard, while limiting, was comfortable to use.

Positive

Solidly built
Great design
Well spec’ed
High resolution screen

Negatives

Slow
Top row of keyboard too close to screen
Poor camera
Poor battery life

Beats by Dr. Dre – Beats Pro (White) Review

2011-10-07T09:31:00.001+05:30

Technorati Tags: headphones,dr.dre,white headphones,loud music,best headphones,professional,dj headphones

Dr. Dre headphones have become a world wide phenomenon. On average you will probably spot at minimum of two people a day sporting them. This isn’t just on a national level, but an international level as well. Just recently on a trip abroad, I observed it as the headphone of choice by average people walking up and down the street – in multiple countries. Some weren’t even using them, just wearing it around their neck as an accessory. The beats generation of fan boys and fan girls has definitely been born.

The Beats Pro are not new headphones, but were actually launched over a year ago, but only recently did we finally get a chance to review them and give them a good audio thrashing.

What’s in the Box:

*Beats Pro
*6″ Cord with Short Coil
*Carrying Pouch
*Gold-Plated Stereo Adapter, 1/8″ Jack to 1/4″ Plug

Design:

Solid. Versatile. Durable. Impressive. Those are just a few adjectives that best describe the Beats Pro. This massive pair of headphones will engulf your ears with its padded ear cups. The metal housing of the Beats Pro almost guarantees that these headphones won’t easily break, even if dropped from a significant height or thrown into a bag.

However with this kind of durability comes weight, and the Beats Pro are heavy. The headphones are not super heavy in your hands, but more so on your head. After wearing them for significant periods of time, the headband tends to grow uncomfortable and a bit top heavy resulting in the headphones slipping forwards or backwards.

Sound

So they look impressive and would probably survive a mosh pit, but do the Beats Pro sound good? Where the forefather Beats Studio required batteries to juice those headphones, and bring out its full potential. The Beats Pro relies solely on the power of your device to make it sound good. Your everyday audio devices will suffice, but the smaller and probably cheaper MP3 players are not a good paring for these beats and do not unleash the headphones full potential.

The Beats Pro are similar to the other Beats by Dr. Dre headphones as they are heavily low-end driven. Mids and treble are relevant, but are certainly not exuded on these headphones. While the Beats Pro will probably get your heart thumping, they aren’t all that special out of the box when it comes to sound. In fact we had to turn the volume up quite a bit to really experience its full potential. To really bring the drivers to life we were compelled to do some tweaking of the EQ settings in order to get that wow factor and once we did, it was a whole lot better with well rounded sound and the low-end still shinned through. Listening to higher bit rates are also a must with these headphones, and if you spent a chunk of change on these and aren’t listening to anything higher than 320kbps, then shame on you.

Conclusion

The Beats Pro are certainly an impressive looking pair of headphones. There hasn’t been one person who hasn’t commentated on them when I take them out of my bag or travel with them. This time around Beats got it right by constructing a pair of headphones with a solid build. The flip-up ear cups are kitschy at best, but they do add to the over allure of these beasts.

While the low-end reigns supreme on the Beats Pro its mids and highs do pretty well, especially if you are willing to play around with your EQ settings. Beats Pro loves the Rock, Pop, and Hip-Hop genres, but requires a little bit of EQ help when it comes to the instrumentals.

It also appears that all the money was spent on constructing the headphones and there was no money left over to make a better carrying case which is just a drawstring pouch that really won’t protect anything.

Many will scoff at the price of the Beats Pro that are currently at $399. Certainly you can buy an almost equally sounding pair of headphones for that money, but you won’t be getting the ‘life’ that also goes along with wearing a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones.

The Good: Low-end is alive and well; solid construction down to the cable; dual input/output audio ports; comfy ear cups that can also be easily wiped clean.

The Bad: Could be too heavy to wear for some; Flip-up ear cups are a nice touch but don’t work to well in practical use; carrying case is a bit disappointing.

T-Mobile has announced two new phones in their myTouch line – the myTouch and the myTouch Q. Both phones are aimed at those new to the smartphone market who are looking to be eased in, likely at a lower price point.

The guts of both phones are identical – the difference is that the myTouch sports a 3.8” touch screen and comes in black and white, while the myTouch Q has a 3.5” touch screen with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and comes in gray and violet.

Both phones focus on introducing newbies to the world of smartphones through a set-up wizard that shows users how to get the most out of email and social network integration. Steve Jobs, the visionary in the black turtleneck who co-founded Apple in a Silicon Valley garage, built it into the world's leading tech company and led a mobile-computing revolution with wildly popular devices such as the iPhone, died Wednesday. He was 56.

The hard-driving executive pioneered the concept of the personal computer and of navigating them by clicking onscreen images with a mouse. In more recent years, he introduced the iPod portable music player, the iPhone and the iPad tablet -- all of which changed how we consume content in the digital age.

His friends and Apple fans on Wednesday night mourned the passing of a tech titan.

"Steve's brilliance, passion and energy were the source of countless innovations that enrich and improve all of our lives," Apple said in a statement. "The world is immeasurably better because of Steve."

Born February 24, 1955, and then adopted, Jobs grew up in Cupertino, California -- which would become home to Apple's headquarters -- and showed an early interest in electronics. As a teenager, he phoned William Hewlett, president of Hewlett-Packard, to request parts for a school project. He got them, along with an offer of a summer job at HP.

Jobs dropped out of Oregon's Reed College after one semester, although he returned to audit a class in calligraphy, which he says influenced Apple's graceful, minimalist aesthetic. He quit one of his first jobs, designing video games for Atari, to backpack across India and take psychedelic drugs. Those experiences, Jobs said later, shaped his creative vision.

"You can't connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future," he told Stanford University graduates during a commencement speech in 2005. "You have to trust in something: your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life."

RIP- Mr. Steve Jobs, this is a shocking news for tech word, you will be remembered for your excellent contribution in taking world’s technology to next level.

Hats off to you from Tech Galaxy Team and Fans

*AT&T version of the Samsung Galaxy S II used for comparison; some specifications vary by model.

Clearly, it looks identical to last year’s model — but the iPhone 4S’ features and specs are all about details. On top of exclusive support for Apple’s new Siri “intelligent assistant” and dictation system, the 4S comes in a new 64GB flavor and ups the camera to include an 8-megapixel sensor with improved low-light performance and 1080p video capture. For CDMA users, the support for GSM global roaming should be a pretty big deal, too. For comparison, we’ve thrown in one of the hottest (and best) Android handsets on the market right now, the Samsung Galaxy S II.

With reports suggesting that HTC was to introduce its first Beats-equipped smartphone in the form of the HTC Vigor, the Taiwanese company has confirmed earlier leaks with a relaunch of its Sensation smartphone; the HTC Sensation XE.

Offering an upgraded 1.5GHz dual-core processor, four-times more internal storage with 4GB and a extremely hefty 1,730mAh battery, the Sensation XE not only delivers with its audio capability, it will also crunch data and deliver seamless playback of media whilst giving you more time between charges.

HTC says:

“The audio quality is a very important factor in mobile sound experience and we are working to push the boundaries not only for speech reception, but also for music, video and games up fully,” said Jason Mackenzie, president of global sales and marketing at HTC Corporation. ”The HTC sensation XE delivers a truly incredible audio experience and is a further proof that we want to offer customers the best possible mobile experience.”

The Sensation XE retains the 4.3 qHD Super LCD touchscreen, 8MP rear-facing and VGA front camera and 768MB RAM but will ship with an in-built remote control for optimal Beats playback – something that HTC hopes will differentiate between its smartphones and rival handsets.
