The Avenger is an adapter that fits around your existing xbox controller and enhances how you push the buttons. Basically the setup allows you to keep your thumbs on the sticks while being able to push the buttons.

Check out the video below for details. If I end up getting one I’ll put up a review to let you know what I think.

Rock Band 3 was release earlier this month and it made its way into my Xbox for a little jam session. The folks at Harmonix, the creators of the Rock Band games, made a lot of changes to this latest Rock Band release. The biggest of these changes is the pro series instruments made by Mad Catz, they added support for a new keyboard, drum set and guitar. The down side to these additions to the game — the price. You could end up paying over $300 if you would like to add all three into your collection.

Besides the instruments the game itself has change quite a bit as well. The game is now built around goals, completing goals gives you fans and unlocks goods within the game. Rather than playing gigs to earn money, you are playing gigs to complete goals. Items in the game are gained by completing these goals rather than saving up money earned to buy new clothes or instruments in the game.

Getting through Rock Band 3 is a little different than previous editions, you can play it solely to complete goals or you can go on the road and complete Road Challenges. Completing each goal is as simple as selecting the goal you would like to work on. You are then taken to the songs that you need to play to complete the goal. Doing Road Challenges is similar to the old Rock Band games, you play a gig in a venue and then move on to the next. While playing a gig you get the option to play two pre-set songs or picking from a couple of random set lists. I really liked this feature as I got tired of being forced to play random set lists in the previous versions of Rock Band. I enjoy being able to choose the songs I want to play. But if I was in the mood to choose a random set list you are given the option of what style of music you want to play such as a 70s set list, 80s set list, 90s set list, ect.

Something Rock Band had started doing in their downloadable content was throwing in the blue and orange buttons on the guitar in easy and medium. If you hadn’t played any of the DLC you may be caught off guard but if you’re a seasoned Rock Band player throwing in the orange button shouldn’t set you off too badly. One of the things that I noticed during gameplay that did set me off a little bit was the delay between the time you start the song and the time the name of the song appears. If you choose a random set list you will notice that you could end up starting to play before the name of the song appears on the screen. This is a little annoying as I like to know what song I am playing before I start and it is distracting to look at it while trying to concentrate on the notes.

Overall the game is great, I really like the new format and enjoy playing the gigs. In previous versions of Rock Band I would sometimes fear playing a new gig as I knew I had long random set lists coming up with songs I didn’t particularly feel like playing. They have helped to fix some of that in this new version which makes the game much more enjoyable. The goals system is fun too, not only do you have the challenge of completing the acheivements on the Xbox you also have to complete the goals in the game to gain fans and unlock content.

Apple’s iPhone has an amazing feature that’s not listed on the Apple website or any technical spec sheet…it’s trade-in/aftermarket value! When you purchase an iPhone for $199 the price has been subsidized by the carrier. The carrier covers part of the cost of the hardware knowing that you have committed to a two year contract, allowing them to comfortably recover their cost (and a whole lot more).

At the end of the contract period you get to walk away with the iPhone and re-sell. Someone who does not wish to sign a contract with a carrier can then purchase the iPhone and use without a carrier commitment. The lack of a contract allows for the price to generally be higher than the original subsidized price.

For example, I recently sold my two year old iPhone 3G for $235 on craigslist. I paid $199 for the phone two years ago. This basically covered the cost of a new iPhone 4. Each time Apple releases a new phone it’s simple to sell the old model and cover the cost of the latest and greatest (of course signing a new contract with the carrier).

Currently here’s what you can expect to get for your hardware in the iPhone aftermarket:

3G $200 – $250

3GS $250 – $300

Tips for re-selling your iPhone:

Best places to sell: Craigslist, ebay

Keep your phone in good condition – use a case/screen protector – any damage will hurt your resale value

Jailbreak and carrier unlock – some users will want to switch carriers

Keep original packaging/accessories

Include any additional accessories if they don’t work with the new model – this will differentiate your sale from the crowd.

This aftermarket works for most subsidized phones, I just happen to have experience with the iPhone. I highly recommend upgrading each time a new model is released – what do you have to lose? Unless you hate being tied into the carrier contract hell. Personally it doesn’t bother me to have a contract.

Good luck in the aftermarket!!

I have found one of the most commonly used functions of my iPad is reading comics. The iPad is a great comics reader and with a decent selection of comic reader/publisher apps. Today I am going to talk about some of the publisher comic apps. Apps like ComicZeal (apps that allow you to import your own comics), I’ll cover at a later date.

Marvel

Marvel offers an amazing service called Digital Unlimited that gives access to thousands of constantly updated comics from the Marvel catalog. Some fairly new, some old, but a great and large selection. The usual price is $60 for a yearly subscription, but can be found for less if you do a little coupon hunting. This is such a great service, so whats the problem? Digital Unlimited is currently not available on the iPad. Marvel’s iPad app instead relies on a pay-per-comic model. Most comics cost $1.99 with 3-4 FREE comics that are updated fairly frequently. I believe the limitation is due to the Digital Unlimited section being flash based and of course the iPad and flash are currently incompatible.

The reading experience is a good one. You can of course pinch to zoom and page left/right, but you can also use panel-by panel navigation. Double clicking anywhere on the page will take you into panel-by panel navigation mode. This displays one panel at a time and paging left/right displays the next/previous comic panel. Personally I still prefer the page-by-page navigation, although it’s smaller it’s more like reading an actual comic book.

Comics by Comixology

In terms of functionality the app is identical to the Marvel app. That’s because the Marvel app is powered by Comixology. The only difference here is the content. Content includes Marvel comics along with Image, Boom, Dynamite and a host of smaller publishers & self published comics. Prices are generally either $1.99, $0.99 or FREE. The FREE selection is very impressive at 100+ comics at the time or writing.

IDW

If you want to read Star Trek, Transformers or GI Joe Comics this is the app you’ll need. It’s not as polished as the Marvel/Comixology apps. It doesn’t have the panel-by-panel navigation option but that’s not really something I personally miss. I have only used the app to read a couple of the FREE comic offerings, but the comic resolution also appears to be lower than that of the other apps. Also the FREE comics available are pretty weak. At time of writing there were only six FREE comics. Unlike the Marvel/Comixology apps the FREE content never appears to change.

Conclusion

With a great selection of comics (including many FREE), great quality images and an easy to use intuitive interface, the Comixology app is the pick of the bunch. If Marvel allowed their Digital Unlimited subscription on the iPad it would be amazing, but as it stands, buying a comic twice is a terrible option.

If you’ve lost your CD Key for your current Windows installation you can get it back pretty easily. There is a program called RockXP that scans the computer for your product key and gets it out so that you can easily reinstall Windows. This is particularly handy when the computer you bought doesn’t come with the standard Windows reinstall disk, you can throw out the reinstall disk that came with your computer since it’s loaded with junk anyway and download a plain old Windows CD off the internet somewhere and use your legal product key to reinstall windows.

The program will also retrieve system passwords if you’ve forgotten them and product keys for Microsoft Office. On one computer the anti-virus software thought the application was a virus but on all of the other computers I have run it on there hasn’t been a problem. The anti-virus software that showed the false positive was Symantec’s anti-virus.

In between working my full time job and the temporary part time job I put together a website called Web Comic of the Day. A lot of times people will put together a great comic and post it online at flickr or imgur and it will disappear into the internet abyss. But with a site dedicated to comics it keep your comic from being forgotten for a little bit longer. Stop by, sign up and submit something. Help make the site into something the internet will be proud of.

I was able to pick up the Kodak zi6 for $99 refurbished from Amazon.com, and at this amazing price, who could go wrong? I added an 8GB SDHC card for $20 and it’s a complete package for less than $120. Much cheaper than the competing Flip HD cameras.

Overall I love this camera, great quality build, great HD quality video and super simple to use (it only has four buttons!).

Some of the features I really like:

Built in USB – no need for an extra cable to transfer files.

Video Quality – The HD quality looks really good.

Mac Compatible – Requires no extra software, just plug in and downloads straight into iphoto/imovie.

Things I don’t like:

Default Quality – when turned on, it defaults to HD @ 30fps instead of the higher quality HD @ 60fps. And as far as I can tell there is no way to change this default option.

Battery Life – Using AA batteries instead of a lithium can of course be convenient as picking up batteries on the fly is a simple task, however battery life suffers. I haven’t ran it down completely yet but I can imagine it not quite making a full day of use.

Sample Video:

Google has increased the attachment size from 20MB to 25MB

“With Gmail, you can send and receive messages up to 25 megabytes (MB) in size. Please note that you may not be able to send larger attachments to contacts who use other email services with smaller attachment limits. If your attachment bounces, you should invite them to Gmail,”

Google has also enhanced the labels

1) New location for labels
You’ll notice your labels in a new location on the left of your inbox (or on the right, for those of you using the Arabic, Hebrew, or Urdu versions of Gmail). Instead of having their own section, your labels are now above your chat list, grouped together with Inbox, Drafts, Chats and other system labels.

2) Label hiding and showing
You now have control over which of your labels show. We’ve done our best to get you started by automatically showing the labels you use most and hiding the rest. Label hiding is my favorite new feature, since it saves me from having to look through labels I rarely use. If I ever need to reach any of my old labels, I just click the “more” link.

If you want to make a lot of changes at once, go to the Labels tab under Settings where you can edit labels in bulk.

For those of you who created label names like _stuff or ++todo++ to force your most-used labels to the top of the list (come on, you know who you are, I did it too…), you don’t have to come up with clever tricks like that anymore

You can now drag messages into labels, just like you can with folders. This does the exact same thing as “Move to” — it labels and archives in one step.

You can drag labels onto messages too. It’s the same thing as using the “Label” button. To label or move many messages at once, first select the messages and then drag and drop the label.

It’s also possible to drag labels into the “more” menu to hide them and vice versa. If you only want to move a couple labels around, I’ve found it quicker than going to Settings.

All of these changes also mean the end of Right-side Labels, an experimental Gmail Labs feature. This is the first Labs feature we’re retiring. (The idea behind Labs was always that things could break or disappear at any time or they might work so well that they become regular features. More on that soon…) Now that labels aren’t in their own little box and take up much less space, moving them around the screen didn’t seem as important. We realize quite a few of you used and liked Right-side Labels, so if you feel strapped for left nav screen real estate without it, try turning on Right-side Chat in Labs instead.

We hope these new changes make labeling even easier and help you stay organized. We’ll be rolling out these labeling features for everyone throughout the day, so if you don’t see them right away please check later today.

The Pirate Bay sold their site for $7.8 million this week to a company called Global Gaming Factory. The Pirate Bay is the most popular torrent site in the whole interworld. Some have said that the $7.8 million is really low for a site that generates so much traffic but with the recent legal battle it seems reasonable to me.

According to the Global Gaming Factory website:

Global Gaming Factory X AB has the biggest network of internet cafés and gaming centers in the world and provides advertisers, software publishers and service providers with an unprecedented access to the large group of tourists and the large gamer community that visit these centers.

Global Gaming Factory X AB’s wholly owned subsidiaries Smartlaunch and CyberCafePro are the leading publishers of cafe management software that is used by thousands of cafes globally. Global Gaming Factory X AB has developed a platform for digital distribution of advertising, games and services that uses this infrastructure of thusands of Internet cafes to target the large group of tourists and the rapidly growing gamer community.

So the real question here is; what does an internet cafe company want with a torrent site? Why would they want to jeopardize their current business with lawsuits from the entertainment industry? Unless of course they are a secret arm of the entertainment industry gathering up information about users on The Pirate Bay.
