Kendrick Lamar is one of my fav new rappers. I love that the West is putting out so much good music these days. It was rough for awhile, after it’s gangsta rap heyday. There are some up and comers out there now putting out good music, and none of them may be as talented as Kendrick Lamar.

This track is definitely experimental, but he is talented enough to pull it off, and have you not rolling your eyes at the pretension.

This track also includes Gunplay, one of Maybach Music’s signees. He provides a nice yin to Kendrick’s yang. This might not be everyone’s type of track, and it won’t be heating up the clubs, but it is one of the tracks of the year so far.

Rappers to Keep an Eye on in 2012 – Stalley

Well it is only natural, I include Stalley here. I mean, after all, I have added like 3 or 4 of his songs to my songs of the year list.

Stalley dropped a great mixtape “Lincoln Nights” last year, that really didn’t get a lot of praise. I think it was too laid back for people, and Stalley was said to kind of disappear on the tracks. I disagree – I liked the tape.

So did Rick Ross – and it actually lead to Stalley getting signed to Maybach Music. This is a track originally on the album, that he remixed with Rick Ross once he signed.

Stalley has seemed to really take his rapping up a notch this year. Tracks like Harsh Ave, BCGMMG and City of 30,000 Wolves all showcase Stalley at his best. Great ear for beats, and a smooth flow with introspective lyrics. I think 2012 could be a good year for him.

Rappers To Keep an Eye on in 2012 – LG

LG is a young rapper out of New Orleans. The video above is from his EP Cinco. As you can see he is still young and raw, but the potential is certainly there. He spits slick raps, that sound genuine. He also seemingly has a great ear for music, because that is a great soulful beat.

I think one of the mos unique things about him is that he is from new Orleans, but you would never have guessed it from the way he raps and the sound of the music. He wants to be more of a Southern Nas, than a Soulja Slim.

Regardless of who he wants to be, his EP Cinco, and this year’s mixtape Synth Sounds (which has an entirely different feel to it, and showcases LG’s versatility) are definitely worth tracking down if you enjoyed the above video.

Don’t know a ton about this dude. I have heard a couple tracks and usually he is spitting really fast, with a definite Bone Thug influence. On this track he slows it down and gets introspective, to great results. Has definitely put him on my radar.

I love this video. First off, Phonte can straight rap. I haven’t loved a lot of his music because I never got into Little Brother, but I did love his first Foreign Connection album. This video is great, a lot of people wonder about “grown man” rap. Can it exist? This video shows it can IMO – Phonte isn’t bragging about wealth, he isn’t reliving a wild youth – he is talking grown up issues, that the everday man faces. Take a look to see what I mean.

This is a song form last year, but the video is relatively new. I think the video does the track justice, the over the top drums pair perfectly with the live performance clips. You get a “epic” feel from the song, and the video captures that perfectly.

First off – LOL @ Avon Blocksdale. The Wire is the greatest show in TV history, but I dunno about that handle. Good news is – the track he is on is FIRE. Great track really showcasing the future of New York. A nice throwback beat that goes HARD. Welcome back New York! My fav verses off here are Exquire and Troy Ave’s.
