Yes and no Peter. Apples (which I probably should have said this was primarily geared towards) don't in fact (to my understanding) use the battery as an auxiliary power source.

I should also note that battery life is also effected by heat and as such technically the way to get the longest life from a battery is to remove it when not in use but this is cumbersome and a minor addition to battery life.

Your answer to the third question is technically not quite correct. When plugged in to the wall, modern laptops use both the wall power _and_ the battery power.

If you're not doing much of anything, your laptop is taking more power from the wall than it's using and so your battery gets charged. If you're calculating digits of pi, it's possible that your laptop will need to draw extra power from your battery in order to keep up. This is intended to be for momentary increases in activity, but I think it's possible to discharge your battery while plugged in if you try hard enough.

This is why most laptops these days will go into a lower-performance mode if you plug them in without a battery.

Thanks for all this helpful info! I wish they would explain this in the Apple store. So I have one more question: if I'm going from work to home, is it better for me to shut my laptop off to conserve the battery power as opposed to just putting it to sleep? At this point it doesn't really matter for me because I'm already at cycle count 322 and my battery is crap but it would be nice to know for the future (when I might have an awesome new MacBook Pro).
