The restaurant makes Lebanese and Middle Eastern food. When you order, they supply you an entree that's unique to The Prophet. A basket of good flatbread, still warm, a bowl of whipped creamed garlic, and some pickled somethings. I've heard it called pickled radish but even after having it three times, I'm not sure. I am sure, however, that I'm hooked on it. It's a strong flavour hit to start off the meal, and sometimes, the addition of a light touch of the garlic mousse adds an interesting lift to a bite or two of the mains.

There are no ordinary items on the menu. Even the most basic things, such as the vegetarian cabbage rolls (oh yes - The Prophet has enough to keep a vegetarian satisfied too) are something of a taste sensation. One of the few places serving kibbeh naiyeh I've found, too. If you're adventurous, try it - it's a minced meat dish but it's served chilled and raw. And (as if I need to add this) delicious. It's the Middle East's answer to carpaccio, but tastier.

Some other notable points on the menu are:

The chicken livers. If a Middle Eastern person feels peaked and unwell, they swear by liver as a tonic food that will lift their energy levels again - all I can say is that this dish lifted me, it's beautifully prepared and tastes exquisite.

Range of skewers, served either with salad for a single meal or stacked high on a plate for parties to share.

Kibbeh, the type you're more likely to be used to, with cracked wheat burghul shells, also available as a meal or as a platter.

Falafel - the BEST ever. No argument from me about it. Just the best. And while we're on the entree dishes, try the tabouleh, the hommus dip and the babaganoush dip. Oh yeah, and the house specialty, avocado dip. Come to think of it, I could imagine a totally satisfying and mindblowing meal just of the bread and the dips. Dips are attractively served garnished with good olive oil pools at the centre, sprinkled with herbs, and the flavours are consistently delicious.

Now what's left to this meal? Ah yes - don't start without having a pot of Lebanese coffee, and don't leave until you've enjoyed a decadently beautiful sweet for dessert...

Ooops. Nope, not really. Just kidding. The garlic and basil tones came from a very nice bruschetta had as an entree shared between two because it's a large serve at two big slices of crusty Italian bread.

At Pizza Bella Roma opposite Gino's on the Freo cappucino strip, it's the whole atmosphere thing. Nice smells wafting around the whole ristorante, good service staff, great cooking, and workable wine list. Goundrey Cab Merlot has always been in my good books, and I'm pleased to report that it goes better with bruschetta than with ravioli. Even with a glass of water in between the food and the wine, the robust aftertastes of the garlic and herbs just goes with the slight sweetness of the Cab Merlot.

When asked which ravioli, I had just one word for the delightful waitress - "carne" - gimme meat. If I want spinach and ricotta I'll have the canneloni. Meanwhile, the bruschetta and drinks arrived pretty promptly and occupied us for a few very well spent minutes. Trish's pizza arrived very soon after that, and the pasta that I was hanging out for, arrived a few minutes after that.

The first bite was just - well, I'd say to die for but I'm still alive - was just perfect, is the best way to describe it. Sauce and pasta and filling. The way a meal was meant to be. Live to eat, don't just eat to live. Usually ravioli beef filling manages to taste a trifle medicinal, not sure why, except that when I make them it doesn't. And the chef at PBR makes them the way I do, tasting like they really are a carnivore's best friend, redolent of beef and cheese and tomato.

Another quick glass of water and that was when I discovered what the cab merlot goes best with. No regrets, but next time I have this kind of meal I think I'll have the merlot with the entree and find a nice Chianti to go with the ravioli.

Right now, the quality of meals seems to be excellent. Don't know if this is Perth-wide or just the Carousel FE's, but it's got me back for a second visit in a week, up from one or two a year.

I can only speak for the burger-burger or the steak, but they have both been excellent. It may help that there seems to be a new cook there, who seems to understand the kinds of meals FE's specialise in, he appears to have the grilled food down to an artform.

For some reason, when I have a burger at Fast Eddy's I have to have hot chocolate too. On a coolish evening, the combination just screams comfort food.

Anyway - this is just a heads-up for a good feed after a night out at the La Prem or whatever you fancy - go to FE Carousel, it's worth it.

At dinner. Tonight. I'll tell you about them in the closing paragraph...

I've been going off Sizlers for a long time now. Four years ago it was still an affordable $25 per person for a steak with all the trimmings, salads, and dessert. It's what they do, right?

In my case, the fatal attraction was always the "megabacon greaseburger" - or the Mega Bacon Beef Burger as Sizzlers unimaginatively (and slightly inaccurately) called it. But over the years my favourite cholesterol and fat bait has changed, mirroring a change in Sizzlers too.

I noticed that the bacon bits that I loved to sprinkle on my salad changed from what was recogniseable as bacon to something that looks liced diced polony and tastes like it too. Soups went from tasty to babyfood.

The other bacon, the six or eight rashers that once adorned the burger in crispy promise of indigestion for hours to come, well - a few years ago, around the same time as all the other degradations, they started being half soggy and half charcoal strips of something sugary and salty and somehow reduced in number to only a few strips...

The burger patty itself was no longer cooked evenly, suddenly almost untouched grey mince crossed by jet black bars of bitter coal-like nuclear hell.

You know, now I think about it the quality at Sizzlers went to hell in a handbasket about the same time they stopped handing out those ridiculous mint pellets.

All this neglect and food abuse comes at an increased price, of course - I figure the same meal that used to cost me $22 a few years ago now costs me $32, almost 50% increase in price in two years, wish I could make that much money investing.

Oh and those "fresh mushrooms" in the picture above, look at the picture again - they are raw not cooked, and the dark spots are liquefying decomposing mushroom, something I've noticed them serving on a regular basis for the last year at least now. Well I know what I won't be doing again for a year or three....

Had gone to work a lot more reluctantly, early, so that I could. Why? My first. Ever. Wine & Food Festival! And me with a food habit to support, too! Yeah, it's true, I have a food habit. Tried going cold turkey once but after a few days I got so woozy and hungry that I ate the turkey. True story!

Anyhow paid for the gourmet plate for T and myself, got given a cardboard platter and a real glass wine glass and a stack of food and wine vouchers, and wandered around. There were some highlights, and no disappointments - WA food and wine is really world class, really. Serious - and I mean serious - competition for the world's fine foods and wines, and this festival really showcases the best... Can I suggest not leaving ot to the last minute - we planned two and a half hours but that really isn't enough time to take it all in and rest between tastes. I could spend a whole day there, I really could. (Mental note to self - mobile phone camera is crap - take a bloody REAL camera next time! Mentally kicks own backside. Idiot!)

Manjimup's Woodgate was the first place I stopped, and sampled their Pinot Noir (excellent) and a totally deluxe Chardonnay Verdelho. (I went back for that Verdelho, it is worth it!) You can email wineguy at bigpond dot net (email address munged to protect them) to get a brochure or place an order, and I suggest you do it because that was about the most perfect start to the festival I could have wanted.

Manjimup have another winner in Sinclair (www.sinclairwines.com.au) and their Cabernet Merlot, if you go to the festival this weekend look them up in shop 426 and say the blogger guy sent you they may have something special for you.

Duke's of Porongorup has some excellently aged Cabernet Sauvignons (2002, 2003, 2004) at excellent prices, and the wines are excellent themselves let me tell you - mind you by this stage the Verdelho had taken its toll and my classification system had taken a bit of a soft blurry edge to it, but I still enjoyed it tremendously.

Worth a mention Trevelen Farm Wines. And Pemberton's Wine & Truffle Co. Oh and Spice Magazine - I met the legendary Anthony of Spiceblog and Spice Magazine. I have bought every issue except the first two now.

Foodwise there was no doubt either that we are doing really well - from cheeses and olives to seafood and sorbet, yoghurt to raisins, we wandered around and sampled and I was constantly amazed at the good things coming out of ingenuity and and care in preparation and skill in creating.

Jingilli (I think - blame the Verdelho) had the spectacular olives, while Dash had the fruitiest extra virgin olive oil I have ever tasted, and some extremely nice dukkahs. Several stalls had the best cheeses ever, and we now have some smallgoods to rival Europe's finest, Asian and Indian foods, seafood, truffles (Wine & Truffle Co remember?) and extremely nice - don't laugh - bread. Generally when you get bread with oliveoil / dukkah or whatever it's just bread. But I noticed that the breads served to highlight the products were often stealing the show for me.

Some beautiful octopus (for me) and sorbet (for T) rounded out a great evening that was way too short. I need to come back for another walk around, I really have only scratched the surface. As I said, come early stay longer bring a bag to carry things - and get the gourmet ticket, it's the only way to go!

Also note that there are little (and big!) demonstrations and presentations on different stages on most hour and half hour boundaries, and every shop staff seemed courteous polite and eager to discuss anything about their products that you might care to ask.

At 10:10 I was standing at the premises at the top intersection of Albany Hwy/Shepperton Rd watching rain come down out from under the verandah, chatting to a Libyan Turkish gentleman who was looking for a travel agent, and suddenly the owner appeared, apologised profusely for being late, unlocked, and ushered us inside.

It's another Aladdin's Cave, people! I have shopped here often, and there are just too many things to mention but I'll mention a few:

Pomegranate syrup and molasses (which I tell you all about in The Body Friendly Zen Cookbook) rose and various other waters for flavouring, packet Turkish soups in profusion, kasar feta and haloumi cheeses, a large range of drygoods and spices, and the BEST zartar in town, jars of various fruit molasses, pickles, preserves, pasta, bourghul, candies and confections, olives dates nuts and beans. And believe me that is only "mentioning a few" - Dunya carries a lot of stock...

I came away with several jars of pickles including the Sera pickled peppers which are, I find, just right not too hot not too bland, some miniature baby pickled cukes, a large jar of zartar as I mentioned (and which I immediately had with Lebanese bread and olive oil on getting home - YUM!) two packets of spices and ingredients for a harchi pilav, some of the good Turkish bouillon beef stock cubes, a bag of loose dried spearmint, chick peas, kasar cheese, a tin of rice dolmades - and paid less than $45 for all of that. I felt as though I must have cheated somehow.

And that sums up Dunya - huge range, and prices that are so good you'll feel like there must have been some kind of a mistake.

I fell in love with it. Then development swept over the place about 18 months ago. I've been studiously avoiding the gleaming new building that stands where the ramshackle shed once stood, avoided the Asian grocery and lolly shop that turned traitor and moved into the refurbished shops in the Square as soon as the old structure became unavailable. Turncoats! Traitors!

But then about eight months ago I had a need for particular spices, and hopped on ScrappyV to explore the bits that were then open in the Square, and they were good. Being clean and sanitary actually added value! Who'd have known? Once my prejudices were knocked down, I found that the place had actually value-added. An Indian food and spices shop, a very nice kebab cafe, and the newly moved lolly shop gave the square some seriously good shopping.

So recently, I've also begun shopping there for other requisites. I have to say that things are much more confidence-inspiring there now. What's on off in the newly-built Market City?

Bakery: Nice breads, good Lebanese pastries, pies sausage rolls drinks - all the usual bakery fare. Yep they bake on the premises.

Seafood: A great selection and range of seafoods and some seafood prepared foods. Smells clean, not the usual fish shop stench.

Grocer: Great. At the moment these guys seem to have some of the best vegies in town, probably not all Aussie grown but while I prefer Aussie, at least I know I can always get what I need and it's fresh enough.

Butcher/Deli: The Market City Butcher is back, and it seems to be a lot better quality as well as good prices. I now buy a lot of my meat here.

Florist, three food stalls/cafes: Florist is good, has a reasonable range, and is not expensive. While one of the cafe/stalls seems to be closed more than it's open, the foods on offer are good, tasty, and the other two make up for it. Coffee of a respectable quality can be got, and a range of fast foods and prepared to order.

Meanwhile, on the outside, in the square, you can get to

Confectionery: The same Aladdin's Cave of sweets and lollies and other interesting goods that existed before, in a layout reminiscent of the old shop.

Indian Groceries: New kid on the block, has a good range and variety. Also various rices and things that you'd generally be hunting around for. Definitely good to know about.

Newsagent: Don't know if their Lotto is lucky but they carry everything I expect and then some. Friendly staff, easy access.

Kebab Cafe: Have had a few meals here now and it is lovely, they seem to bake a lot of their own breads for the meals and that means fresh and tasty.

Asian Groceries: I've always loved this shop, and in its new premises it's just gotten more appealing. Great range great value!

So the new Market City and surrounding square are now lovely, I didn't think it would be ableto grab me again once it lost the soukh feel but the quality is there and that has grabbed me all over again.

They built the Bistro and Beer Garden and they had great food at great prices, we locals were stoked.

Well, they've remodelled the remodelled Bistro area, and the menu. And the prices. Look, I'm not a pennypincher but paying $16 for a burger is bullshit. Or $18 for fish and chips. Total bullshit peoples!

I picked up my burger and tried to take a bite. Yeah it's a very full burger (kudos for that, it is F-U-L-L) but there's that first WTF moment, when you realise that the burger bun is solid as a rock and all those piled ingredients shoot out the other side. Then the unmistakable taste - who the hell puts a full-on burger into a Turkish roll? Come on! So I settled down to a painful session using a knife and fork.

There is the second WTF moment. Have you ever tried to cut a dried-out toasted Turkish roll with a bread and butter knife? They should have supplied a frigging chainsaw! The burger mince was pretty close to concrete in texture, almost as hard to cut as the bun. Draped across the egg though, was a slice of that plastic singles slices cheese. So the egg became a bit of a proposition to cut too, once that cheese had set...

Yes the salad on the side was nice. I'll give them that, they had fresh salad ingredients. But whoever decided that this is what a burger needs to be, needs their head examined. And the kitchenhand's offsider that grilled the meat to a rocky lump, they just need to get a job making road mending supplies.

So after the meal I was trying to explain my disappointment to Trish, and said something along the lines of "you know, if you go to a restaurant where the steak is tough you can make allowances for maybe a difficult piece of meat, but I've never been to one where the mince was tough."

Trish had had the fish, and she summed up her meal this way: "Well yeah, but this is the first time I've been to a restaurant where the fish was tough." Just then the waitress walked by to pick up our plates and asked if we wanted desserts. Almost in unison we chorused "No thanks - couldn't stand having to hack apart the custard!" and got up to leave before we burst out laughing...

And that kind of says it all, actually. The High Road Hotel Bistro is total crap now. They are overpriced, underskilled, their menu has been designed by a walking a culinary occlusion (also known as a clot in the kitchen) and even if I was pissed I wouldn't make the mistake of eating there again.

It's on High Roa... Oh stuff it it's just not worth it... Forget about it! Go get a pizza instead!

(Crosses fingers, this could get me kicked out!)

What: Italian Restaurant

Description: Located in the famous cappucino strip of Freo, this place has been a favourite of mine for over a decade now. First time I went there I asked for a bowl of olive oil for the bread, and our relationship hasn't looked back since. What they make, besides the pizza which their name implies, you can find on their website but I'll give you some of my favourite suggestions as well - share a bowl of mussels, they are excellent. Share at least one pizza off the extensive menu, then have something pollo (I suggest the panzerotto, to die for) or for a plain dinner the spaghetti al aglio e olio - and wash it down with something white from Capel or Madfish. That's all I'm sayin... Oh, and caffe, of course... You could head across the street but BellaRoma's coffee too has Bell' Aroma and is far easier.

It's a place you will keep coming back to. Yes it gets busy on weekends but it's worth it. And we make a point of going there during the week, after a hard day's yakka, for a perfect unwind and feed. You could do a lot worse than make a weekday evening of it here. The food is superb no matter what day you go there.

Find Them: Address section has details.

Hours: Restaurant hours.

They make some really delectable edibles, and my favourite is - sad but true - their palmier. All the nice pastries on sale there and I like sugar crusted puff pastry...

Oh well. If you go to Station St Markets though, do go take a wander in the north entrance and grab a nice croissant or brioche from them.

It is a classic dessert from the Limousin area of France.

INGREDIENTS:
butter and sugar for the baking dish
1-1/4 lb. cherries
1/2 cup sugar
1/3 cup all-purpose flour
1/3 cup cream
2/3 cup milk
4 eggs
2 egg yolks
3 Tablespoons kirsch (optional)
Confectioner's sugar for dusting

PREPARATION:
This traditional dessert, from the Limousin area of France, is usually cooked with the cherries unpitted. If you choose to do it this way remember to warn everyone!

1. Pit the cherries (or not).

2. Brush the baking dish with some melted butter and coat it with some sugar. Shake out any excess sugar.

3. Sift the flour and a pinch of salt into a bowl and make a well in the center.

4. Pour the milk and cream into the well and stir to make a smooth paste.

5. Add the eggs, egg yolks and sugar. Continue whisking to make a smooth batter.

6. Put the cherries into the buttered and sugared pan. Ladle the batter over the cherries.

7. Bake the clafoutis in a pre-heated 350° oven for 30-35 minutes. It should be puffed up and just beginning to brown.

To serve:
Remove from oven. Allow to cool slightly, then dust with the confectioner's sugar and serve.

Having a partner whose family is all grown up helps. No putting on a lunch for thousands, no hassles. Trish went to one of her kids' for lunch, I called my family members and chatted to them for a while, and we booked a table at Yu asian restaurant at Burswood. Wish I could say the food and the service was terrific but, for a silver service restaurant, it disappointed in the service department...

Our waiter (may have been a maitre'd but not so sure) was the fly in the ointment right at the outset, and thankfully he stayed away from us for the rest of the night. Say you arrive at a silver service restaurant, what do you expect? Yes, *service*! Proper service, the kind that you're paying for. Did it ruin the night? Yes, for me, it did. Food was sumptious, the other wait staff were all very much silver standard, but the bad taste lingered for days...

When we placed our order I apparently committed some grave error which our Vietnamese waiter couldn't forgive, by letting Trish order for herself. Apparently in some benighted minds women should still be walking a regulation ten paces behind their lords and masters, and apparently silver service is one of those places where those minds hold sway. Trish ordered her meal - and asked for chinese tea - and the guy just exploded away from the table, and I actually had to recall him to the table to place my order. I asked him for a recommendation but apparently social skills are also not part of his silver service repertoire, so a chance to recover from his rudeness was not used, and I placed my order as well. Then had to stop him running away before I'd placed a drinks order...

On top of that, he did not place the orders for either the tea or the wine, this was apparently beneath his station in life, so we had to order both of those again. This despite Trish repeating her order twice, and me calling him back especially to order a glass of wine.

How can any meal taste good after that much rudeness and ignorance? Yes the food was well prepared and beautifully presented but I'm sorry I don't really want to talk about that now. I really recommend they find at least one better staff member.

Find Them: Burswood complex.

Hours: Unknown.

Photo (if any):

The coffee is a beautiful mellow flavour, and the range of snacks is impressive for such a compact booth. The surrounding area has been pavement-scaped with a terraced "step" sitting area, and there are plenty of tables and areas to retire to with one's refreshments.

They use a specially blended Five Senses coffee which as mentioned lends the special mellow rounded character to their product, and appear to be open during normal working hours.

Find Them: on the corner of Cambridge Street and Jersey Street at the end nearest to the lights, see Google Map.

Hours: Trading hours for shopping centre.

Photo (if any):
