Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen:

It is an honor to join so many friends this evening in a tribute to freedom and a tribute to the President whose name is synonymous with it – Ronald Reagan.

Ronnie and I got to know each other at a time when we were both in Opposition, and when a good many people intended to keep us there. They failed, and the conservative 1980s were the result.

But in a certain sense, we remained an opposition, we were never the establishment. We were opposed to big government, to fashionable opinion within the belt-way, and to the endless round of so-called liberal solutions to problems the liberals themselves had created. As Ron once put it: the nine most dangerous words in the English language are “I’m from the government, and I’m here to help”. As usual, he was right.

Ronald Reagan helped America – and so America could help the world - because he rejected that approach. He believed, and he never stopped proclaiming, that the talents of a nation, not the wisdom of bureaucracy, forge a country’s greatness. Let our children grow tall – he urged - then they can reach out to raise others higher too.

For our opponents, there are always a hundred reasons why the government must intervene to plan its children’s lives. For us, there’s one overwhelming reason why it shouldn’t – because men and women are born to be free.

The world isn’t much used to hearing that kind of message now. We live in an era of sound bites and spin doctors, of false sentiment and real cynicism. That’s why just reading – or hearing as we shall - the words of Ronald Reagan is so refreshing. They remind us that men and women were born for high ideals and noble purposes.

They remind us, too, that the world which so many now take for granted was won by struggle. And Ron had to struggle. The fact that he kept his composure and lifted us all with his humor testified to his inner strength, not to a life without hardship. And it also testified, as he never failed to add, to the boundless, enfolding love of Nancy.

Ronald Reagan’s achievements can be summed up like this: he made America great again, and he used that greatness to set the nations free. Either of these achievements would qualify a President for the political pantheon: but to have succeeded in both marks out President Reagan as one of America’s very greatest leaders.

All his policies were of a piece, and all reflected his own distinctive philosophy. He believed in America, and he believed in people.

When the academics foretold American decline, he replied that there was nothing this nation couldn’t do, once given the chance.

When the economists denounced his policies of tax cuts as simplistic, he didn’t mind if his answers were simple because they were true.

When liberals doubted if Americans were willing to master events and make sacrifices, he replied (and I quote):

“No weapon in the arsenals of the world is so formidable as the will and moral courage of free men and women”.

But nor did Ron ignore those arsenals of weapons. His build-up of American military might, sustained by a revived economy, was the decisive factor in winning the Cold War for the West and Liberty.

But how they mocked him!

Do you remember how he was told that the only way to deal with Soviet advances was to negotiate arms control?

Do you remember how they said that toughness in dealing with the Soviets would only help the hard-liners in the Kremlin? And then came Gorbachev, and then an end to the Evil Empire itself!

And do you remember how much they mocked an old man’s obsession with Star Wars? Well now we know, from the mouths of ex-Soviet officials no less, that SDI was crucial in forcing them to renounce military competition and to end the Cold War. And now President Reagan’s vision is the starting point for the world’s most necessary military program – I mean, of course, Ballistic Missile Defense.

Missile Defense is just one example of the continuity between the world which Ronald Reagan and I faced in the 1980s and the world we know today. Now, as then, it is crucial to keep our defenses strong and up-to-date. It’s particularly vital to ensure that America maintains its lead in military technology, which gives us mastery of the battlefield.

But Missile Defense also illustrates how the world has changed since those Cold War years. No longer do two nuclear superpowers confront each other around the globe. Rather, we face threats from numerous different quarters – threats less potentially catastrophic it’s true, but grave… and graver still because all but impossible to predict and deter.

Ronald Reagan’s political legacy is one where the captive nations have been freed, where democracy is dominant, where the march of capitalism is unchecked. The world is freer, fairer and richer.

But yesterday’s conservatives never imagined that the end of the Soviet Union would usher in an end to danger – only the liberals, wrong now as in the past, thought that. Those liberals were all too influential. The West cut back its defenses too far. It weakened its intelligence effort. It succumbed to the fatal illusion that government’s role is to make us comfortable, rather than to keep us safe. And so it was that those who hate America, fear liberty and attack progress, were able to prepare their wicked assault on this nation that fateful Tuesday last September.

Since then the world has watched, with growing admiration and a rebirth of hope, how America has taken swift and devastating action against the West’s sworn enemies. This was an extraordinary feat of arms. It was also an inspiring example of leadership. What we have seen proves beyond doubt that America is in truth, not just name, the unrivalled global superpower. And it proves too that another great American President sits in the White House.

I am pleased and proud that Britain, once again, has made an important contribution to this struggle against evil. Echoing both Bismarck and Churchill, President Reagan once remarked: “future historians will note that a supreme fact of this [twentieth] century was that Great Britain and the United States shared the same cause: the cause of human freedom”. My friends: in the continuation of the War Against Terror our countries must again stand firm.

For as President Bush has reminded us, though a great battle is over, the war itself is not. Our purpose must be to strike the other centers of Islamic terrorism wherever they are. And we must act equally strongly against those states which harbor terrorists and develop weapons of mass destruction that might be used against us or our allies.

The recent shameful European reaction to President Bush’s State of the Union Speech reminds me of nothing so much as that which greeted President Reagan’s words two decades ago. Americans shouldn’t take too much notice. Fear masquerading as caution, pique posing as dignity, words substituting for thought – we have been there many times before. Whatever the protests of the faint-hearts, it is high time to take action against the Rogue States which are arming against us.

In particular, Saddam Hussein constitutes unfinished business. And he now needs to be finished – for good. First rate intelligence, the support of opposition elements within Iraq, and overwhelming force will probably all be required. But the risks of not acting far outweigh those of allowing Saddam to continue developing his weapons of war. I hope and trust that Britain will support to the hilt the action your President decides to take.

America today is not just the only global superpower. She enjoys a superiority over any other power or combination of powers greater than any nation in modern times. This also places on her shoulders an awesome responsibility. For the United States, as for any country, national interest must come first – and without apology. But America’s interests are so vast that no region lies beyond them. This, my friends, has three implications – each full of significance for the future.

On the first I have touched already. America must remain strong. She must again, as under Ronald Reagan, rebuild, reshape and modernize her defenses. President Bush’s military budget and Secretary Rumsfeld’s visionary plans demonstrate that this lesson has already been heeded.

The second implication is that America needs trustworthy allies in every region. America is mighty, but no democracy will tolerate becoming the whole world’s policeman. My advice is: pick your allies wisely, support and reassure them – and then insist that they fulfill their promises and commit their resources.

Third – and here may I step just over the line of political even-handedness – America will know that particularly in times like these the Leader of the Free World must be seen by your friends and foes alike to speak with unqualified authority. The world does not much understand the doctrine of the Separation of Powers. But it respects America more when it knows that the promises and warnings of the US Commander-in-Chief are endorsed by the other main organs of elected government. That message is powerful politics – and it has the still greater merit of being true.

My friends, one further golden thread connects Ronald Reagan with the Republican Party today – the love of liberty. So it is doubly fitting that this should be your theme tonight.

President Reagan didn’t just abhor communism, mistrust socialism and dislike bureaucracy, he truly loved liberty – he loved it with a passion which went far beyond anything else in his political life. It was what brought moral grandeur to his vision of America and to his dreams for a better world. It was directed not mainly at earthly powers and principalities but rather at the infinitely precious, utterly unique human being, wherever he or she was yearning to breathe free. The thought is memorably expressed by the poet Byron: ‘Eternal spirit of the chainless mind! Brightest in Dungeons, Liberty! Thou art, For there thy habitation is the heart – The heart which love of thee alone can bind; And when thy sons to fetters are consigned – To fetters, and the damp vault’s dayless gloom, Their country conquers with their martyrdom, And Freedom’s fame finds wings on every wind’.

My friends, God Bless Ronnie - and God Bless America!

The London Jihad

The Jawa Report made me aware of this Daily Mail article. This stuff just gets me too angry to even form a coherent, intelligent argument around. I just don't know what to say to those who argue that Christianity has too much power within the borders of historical Christendom, and/or that Muslims are recieving unfairly harsh treatment (as opposed to being handled with absurd kid gloves.)

We are both hoping to get even one person to click over to Doctors Without Borders; I know, they're French, but they are used to working in the Franco-sphere, and in Haiti. They're also good peoples. Please do what you can.

My prayers and what little money a noob like myself possesses are there for our Haitian brothers and sisters. I hope you'll do the same. The Daley Gator has a wonderful rundown of all the aid organizations that you can assist in their work in Haiti; I like Doctors Without Borders and they do have a long history of work in the Francophony.

Again, please do what you can for the Haitian people. If you don't have money to give, at least offer some prayers, and perhaps do a little shilling for the aid organizations in action on the ground.

Honesty In Motion - I must confess a personal connection, in the interest of full disclosure: the author of this blog is a close personal friend, my main sparring partner (Jeet Kune Do) and an AK-wielding roommate. Now that allegations of cronyism and smoke-filled backroom negotiations have been rendered moot, I can tell why he's worth reading: he is eloquent, deliberate, abrasive when necesary and possessed of far less arrogance thanhis intellect has earned; he obeys rule 5 (boobies!) like its his effing job and he loves America (enough to be joining the USM this year, probably Navy with intent to pursue BUD/S training.)

The Other McCain - The writings of Robert were one of the main sources of blogspiration for GS and myself as we got started with this right wing blog hustle. When I think 'conservative blogosphere' his is the first url that comes to mind. This post (and the four that shall follow) are based on this how-to post of his, outlining the basics of traffic aquisition. Now that he has kicked the blogspot habit and gotten his own wordpress theme drawn up, he will be unstoppable in 2010. As I pointed out in this post of mine: "That guy has a cheeky sense of humour, one which is deeply conservative (equal parts tweed-jacketed intellectual and southern populist) and which is made infinitely stronger by his ability to not use it when one ought not jest..."

ummm, have you ever held a dictionary in your hand, jackass? being on a precipice is a bad thing. a very bad thing. as a point in fact, it is the last thing that one experiences before falling to one's likely death. for a man (term used loosely) who has spent the bulk of his post-puberty life in the ivory tower of academia, it apparently did little to illuminate his subtlety of anglophonic linguistics.

(unless, of course, he is warning us that should we cooperate with his intent, we will experience a very unpleasant, possibly catastrophic, fall? seems like the kind of sick honesty one might expect from an agent of the appropriately named hUN)

Stuart Little Causes Big Touble for JFK

According to the Telegraph, a potential ~~snakes~~ mice on a plane scenario was averted on Sunday by an as-yet-unnamed Delta pilot, who determined that the possibility of rodent-inflicted electrical damage presented an unacceptable risk to the passengers' safety. The flight was to be headed across the pond to London's Heathrow. Passengers such as Andy and Jenny Picken had no choice but to wait a few extra hours at John Fitzgerald Kennedy International whilst a replacement aeroplane was secured.

I am possessed of an irrationally risk-taking personality myself, but I applaud this bloke's tough judgement call. Heaven only knows whether he quietly saved hundreds of lives.

No word yet as to whether Pinkie was "the lone chewer" or simply the patsy for a shadowy web of conspiratorial varmint. Reportedly, a pro-Castro cell group of Cuban lab mice had been operating in the New England region, with the alleged goal being to infiltrate the Anglo-American trans-Atlantic passenger airlines.

The title of this post is courtesy of Thomas Jefferson. I think it is a great response to the White House Blogging Team.

A few random thoughts:

-Let it never be said that I will refuse to give the current administration credit where it is due: this recent move on Cannabis appears to be in the right direction.

-That being said, even as a States Rights' Constitutionalist, I prioritize the mission in Central Asia higher than something as silly as domestic pot law. Our Commander-In-Chief really needs to get his gear in one sock on this issue so that our brothers in arms over there aren't left out to dry.

-Why is Honesty in Motion so awesome? Well, he reads books. Specifially, ones that aren't handed to him by the NYT best-seller list, a "globally thinking" teacher or Oracle Oprah. Specifically he reads books written by pre-Marxified American heros:

-Obama's well-screened website allows more anti-Semitism than a Wagner performance in Saudi Arabia during the middle of Ramadan. Why?

-I am just sick and tired of hearing Robert McCain accused of Racism. I can only imagine how frustrating it is for him.

(WARNING: This post is fairly disturbing, because it is based in reality. It is not pornographic or anything, in fact quite the opposite; if you were all hot and bothered for Hannah Giles Bikini Photos or Sarah Palin Poolside Packing, prepare for an intellectual cold shower. It is not for the squeamish, but there are monsters in society we must be prepared to face down in the realm of public debate.)

This has taken me waaaaaay longer to write than I expected, mainly because I get distracted approximately every 13 seconds. Attention Deficit with Hyperactivity seems to combine with hyperlinks and caffeine into an extrodinarily potent combustion of time. First I read some of the great stuff over at The Other McCain. That guy has a cheeky sense of humour, one which is deeply conservative (equal parts tweed-jacketed intellectual and southern populist) and which is made infinitely stronger by his ability to not use it when one ought not jest (Ecclesiastes and all that jazz). Happy Birthday to him indeed, (a bit belated) and I wish him another half-century, if he can stand us that much longer. Then I started perusing the Day By Day webcomic. The author, Chris Muir, seems to be on a similar wavelength to myself, in terms of speaking to younger generations' authentically in their forms (his artistic style is very up to date, as it were and his pen's wit is sharp as a Jihaddist's Schimitar) without compromising to the sheer idiocy of modernism's "progressyve" content ("MESSAGE!"). This was my favorite jewel of his:

A half-hour of compiling Girl Talk videos on youtube <--(NSFW or young'uns!!), 47 minutes of trying to determine if Jim Webb (D - VA) is one of the "good" ones or not, 3 packages of Easy Mac nuked and devoured, and a round of calisthenics later; I find myself stuck with the subject that has vexed my mind as of late. A nagging question that I have tried to put out of my mind, becuase it infuriates, and saddens and twists like a splinter in the psyche: How on earth did we get here?

Of course, "here" could mean a lot of different things, good, bad, ugly and indifferent. What I refer specifically to is this:

-toys no child should be given, ever (even the moonbats at Huffingpaint Post agree this is wrong!);
-the infamous case of Papa Phillips' conduct quite unbecoming of a father and a gentleman (warning: link is crude and offensive);
-Roman Polanski's all-too-expansive base of culturally influential supporters;
-The new style for adolescent males: hair from the Adventures of Zelda, tight female pants, lyrics about cutting oneself and boy-on-boy kissing by straight guys (it shows how "open-minded" you are - I wish I was making this up);
-Perez Hilton's alleged relevance (no I will not link to him that assclown gets more traffic than he ever deserved);

-The otherwise excellent Prince Caspian movie just couldn't be without a romantic sub-plot. WHY, in the accursed name of Tashlan, NOT?
-Lady Gaga's alleged "music" career (let's be honest: it's more like pr0n than art)
-The edited versions of popular music that often reflect distorted proprities
(example: Pink's edited album silences the word "damn" but preserves the line "teachers dated me". Wouldn't want your daughter to say the dee word while her algebra teacher is coppin' a feel, now would we?);
-High fascionists that seem to be the most titilated by the least grown-woman-shaped women;
-Britney (you know, the girl who's marketed with approximately the same slut-tastic image to both the Maxim and the Tiger Beat audience) asks her legions of adoring young fans "If You Seek Amy" (if you don't understand what's wrong with this, say it out loud. Yup, that's what she means!);
-on and on, ad nauseam.

In my experience, when discussing these things, many morally upright people of all different political persuasions start to sound like the bitterly beseiged Tory I often feel like. It's impossible for any responsible parent, frequent baby-sitter, primary grade teacher, protective older sibling or involved aunt/uncle to not take these trends more or less personally.

Let's first acknowledge that perverse sexual crimes have been a recurring theme throughout human history. The Torah lists a multitude of super gross stuff that YHWH prohibitted of the Israelites. The fact that such proscriptions exist indicates that such behavior was taking place. Irish kings were said to have celebrated their own coronation by (*achem*) public horse-mounting. (Any of you New-Agey types still want us micks to revert on a widescale from Catholicism to Paganry?) I've seen videos of animist tribal groups doing things around a campfire that would make even the most well-indoctrinated cultural relativist start to feel superior/"puritanical"/physically nauseous.

Furthermore, the Shadowy depths of the human psyche, like the murky depths of the deepest oceans, are still incompletely mapped, and possbily for the better. "There be Dragons" indeed. Quite literally: the Reptilian Cortex; related to sex, ritual, dominance, violence and territory. I've been known to say that the only thing more disturbing than abnormal psychology is normal psychology.

That being said, a whole range of behaviors and impulses that are maladaptive, anti-social, self-destructive and/or just plain evil are now considered within the scope of normal. And for that we can thank, among others, Alfred Kinsey.

Just because (seemingly) every peasant-minded parent on your block thinks that "it's just a singer/tv show/movie/whatever" doesn't mean a single thing. You are king of your castle. Act like it.

By now, we've all heard the cooked book statistics and pathos-driven estrogen arguments for ~~socializing~~ (oops, there goes my meanie racist code-wording again) nationalizing our health care system. What counter-arguments are there?

Setting aside the obvious (but in the modern cultural/political climate, sadly irrelevant) objection that "providing for the health care of the citizens of the several states" is not a task found in the Enumerated Powers that the Constitution permits to the federal government, here are two of the compelling reasons to terminate this legislation with extreme prejudice.

The first is a simple question of money; can we (we: those of us silly enough to suffer an illegal extortion ring with an official sounding acronym to pillage the fruits of our labour; heretofore referred to as the American Taxpayer) support the inevitable massive spike in draws on the federal largesse? National debt estimates from a couple years back say “No”. I daren't look up the most recent data, because after what President Goldman Sachs did to “bail out” the economy, the American Taxpayer is further in the hole than he's ever been.

(Now if we could admit that we're on the wrong side of the Laffer Curve, heed the wisdom of Ibn Khaldun, and slash some marginal income tax rates, we might find that we had a little bit higher income tax revenue. Still, the marginal increase would pale in comparison to our collective debt to Red China alone. There is no magic bullet, but a tighter belt would be a good start.)

The second reason to keep this intolerable act off of the metaphorical table is even more important: WE WOULD BE SIGNING CONTROL OF OUR PHYSICAL BODIES OVER TO THE GOVERNMENT. Do I need to repeat that? WE WOULD BE SIGNING CONTROL OF OUR PHYSICAL BODIES OVER TO THE GOVERNMENT.

For the "U.S. out of my uterus" folks: does this bode well for you, in light of the fact that Evangelicals and Mormons are the only white people in America reproducing faster than they die? Every step towards more government involvement in health care puts their children one step closer to taking your "reproductive rights" (the validity of which, or lack thereof, I will refrain from commenting on.)

If you're in favor of medicinal cannabis (which I am, 100%) you can't seriously believe that a national health care system would be friendly to such homegrown (and ultimately conservative) grassroots freedom. The use of this plant for ailiments ranging from AIDS and Anorexia to Multiple Sclerosis and Chronic Pain ultimately undermines the mentality of groupthink. Mark my words: we can move towards health care socialism or we can move towards federal recognition of states' rights in regard to kanah bosim, but we cannot move towards both.

In every medical question, this will have the effect of moving the decision-making process further from your family's kitchen table and closer to Washington, D.C. (and thus: the United Nations World Order).

By definition, if the federal government has financial responsibility for the upkeep of our bodies, it would be perfectly reasonable for the American Taxpayer to demand the prohibition of tobacco, or alcohol, or trans-fatty acids or sedentary lifestyles, or any other substance or behavior that can be proven detrimental to health. After all, he is picking up the tab for the inevitable result. What gives one man a right to smoke 2 packs a day while another man (whose bootstrapping ambition and the sweat of his brow carried him into a more affluent tax-bracket) is forced to pay for his emphysema treatment? Indeed, how is this not corporate welfare? The lower-income chain-smoker (the two are statistically quite connected, btw) has skipped out on a massive expense (his own healthcare) and given the money he would have spent to Phillip Morris. That's not fair. So the logical result is progressively more and more Orwellian regulation of individual behavior.

Some doors ought not be opened.

From the Department of Homeland Security to respected geopolitical expert Bill Cosby, it's all the rage at the moment to project upon the vocal opponents of Obama's legislative to-do list a motive rooted in skin color. One brave little toaster has followed up his long-term success in engineering peace between Issac and Ishmael by lending his infinite Presidential credibility to a regurgitation of this psychotic assertion in his soothing, down-home drawl. Peanut farmer, close political ally of Grand Kleagle Byrd and noted proponent of appeasement-based foreign policy Jimmy Carter was quoted as saying

''I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity towards President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he's African-American,'' Mr Carter said.

According to this surrealist fantasie, the broad-based groundswell of popular dissent that has made itself seen and heard as of late has nothing to do with our Walking Messiah Complex's Dr. Rockso-esque attraction to the chains of new Bad Debt. Nor does it reflect a reasoned backlash to the glaring absence of any coherent or reality-based explanation of how we intend to one fine day pay this porcine invoice down. Tax resisters, through the view of this looking glass, are closet white supremacists. If you record the phrase “state's rights” onto a vinyl LP and play it backwards at double speed it says “slavery forever.” Yada yada yada ...

Ah, my head hurts so bad right now from having to delve into that mentality. Writing the last paragraph was painful, but it was worth it. One must to make a frequent habit of considering things from the perspective of those whose goals are contrary to his. Only by understanding their paradigms can you ascertain emotional and sub-conscious roots of their arguments and thus destroy them in the Pride Fight of public intercourse. What lessons can we draw from this outburst of scape-goating and rampant straw-man massacre?

First let us acknowledge that a racial element does exist within those of us who challenge the foolishness of the current administration, but also be quick to remind “newsers” (those who believe what they hear on the news) you may encounter that the vast majority of small government types are too busy running their own lives and lamenting the exponential growth of big government to give two seconds of thought to the color of their neighbors' skin. How many of us would have loved to have voted for Alan Keyes in the last election? I know I would have been thrilled to. A great many of Obama's detractors would have as well, I suspect.

With Democratic dominion over the White House and both Congressional Houses, why should the Left be so frantically worried? Surely this type of wild-eyed accusation is not the behavior of politicos who feel secure in their power. Why? Well, for one, more people than ever are loudly and publicly asserting their rights and the sheer volume of their aggregate voice is terrifying to Pelosi, et al. This enthusiastically outspoken subset of the community must not be allowed to speak without being first slandered. For if John Q. Public were to accept the obvious reality of the negative aspects of The One and his Entourage, our lamentable predicament (donkey occupation of both parliamentary houses) could begin to improve as early as 2010. We need to have an unexpected turning of tables in the upcoming congressional elections, my friends. Less D's; More C's, L's and R's. The very fact that they attack us with such plebian rancor, must embolden us. Indeed, they are scared of losing their power so soon after getting it; in 2010 (and then again in 2012) let's vindicate those fears!

Jimmy Carter: Go fishing, go golfing, go build a house, grow peanuts, play court jester at the CFR, or do whatever else it is you do with your time, besides maligning with the Scarlet R of racism the 40-something percent of the populace that isn't beholden to the same cult as you.

Everybody Else: Let's fix this mess by voting (and marketing) for people like Chuck Baldwin, Gatewood Galbraith, Alan Keyes, Michael Badnarik and Ron Paul in the upcoming election years. Pay attention to local elections, they matter more than Presidential anyways.
