No need for further explanations I guess. You all know the drinking problems, the drug adictions, the driver license suspended…issues that defined the life of these girls. The cool stuff about this type of tees is that you can always wear them, because they never stop getting into trouble…like all the time. So…which one are we gonna wear next month?

Hmm…if your first impulse is to ask : “Who in the name of God is Bennifer” or “You typed Jennifer wrong”…well guess again, because it really is Bennifer ( Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, the one and only Hollywood couple who unfortunately or fortunately broke up). The cool part was that after they broke up, Ben starting making fun of this nickname and even wore a tee like this.

3.     Kristen Stewart is a trampire

Quite an ingenious word play if you ask me. This tee was launched on the market after the sexual scandal in which Kristen Stewart aka Bella from the Twilight Saga cheated on her boyfriend Robert Pattison aka Edward the vampire from the same Twilight Saga…with a 40 year old man…no one else than the director of a movie in which she had the leading role.

4.     Yeah, I’m on a drug. It’s called Charlie Sheen

It’s no secret that Charlie Sheen is the master in disguise when it comes to drugs and alcohol. So why not make this even more official than it already is? This is how this type of tee was born. It’s a…let’s say…way of life…

I personally think that the video says enough about Noclouds, an independent clothing line , led by the slogan: Don’t cloud your judgement!

The line is a concept clothing line each item has a specific meaning, intricate detailing , distinctive design patterns and limited in quantity. The video shows Noclouds new  space series collection. The aim here is to produce easy to wear, classic design clothing with a modern twist.

The upscale collection is entitled THE PRIVATE LINE,  where two pieces have been released the “Noir Leather” Tshirt and the Oversized Panel Tshirt which can be viewed here.

The Noir Leather

Each T shirt in the space series collection is part of a narrative of a mission to space.

The first design The Space Patch, signifies the beginning of the space mission “for those with an ope mind”.

The second design The Confines is the part of the mission at which the Astronaut is stranded , feeling uncertain and doubtful. It represents the place where one  possibly experiences “Fear of the unknown”.

The Astrobot the third design was created to safely rescue the space confined astronaut , “Even through adversity we can still find an inner strenght”.

So with that, your most likely interested in clothing brands, maybe your researching advice and tips for creating your own line, or trying to better the line you already have.

I’ve got to talk about this a little bit here. See when your on the internet searching around for the latest information when it comes to what your looking for, there’s TONS of it.

I have counted about 65+ good websites with great information, tips & advice on how best to start and grow your clothing line.

But i have yet to see any of these people talk about the bigger picture about giving out advice and coming up with new ways of growing.

And the problem i see time and time again is that when your looking for advice, your not looking for some one to tell you how to run your brand.

There are some really great books online about how to start a clothing line, and how to run your brand better, some are free and some you got to pay for.

And most of them if not all of them do have good information about the topics you need advice on, and buying a few of these books are a good idea and are worth the investment.

Advice! Who doesn’t love some Advice!

But think about this for a little bit, how many people like yourself, are looking up the same thing as you? it wouldn’t take long to have a full list of up and coming brands that are all trying to find

out the best advice to point them in the right way, then we all take that advice and we all use it the same way the other 1,000,000 people that researched the same information.

Do you know what you end up with? you end up with 1,000,000 brands that all look the same, act the same, and are all fighting to get the same customers.

Does this sound like its going to work for long? “So what are you saying? We Don’t look for advice and information?”

Well no, of course not. Look for the advice your seeking, collect that information , but you must keep in mind at all times that there are other brands just like yours, that are going to or have already done the same thing as you.

So what do you do then you ask? Simple. Maybe your looking at the boom of singlet sale’s over the past 2-3 years (Thanks to the fitness & supplement industry) and you want to create some really cool looking singlets for your own clothing line.

So you look around at the best singlets out there, what are people wearing the most? what fits in your budget? and then you take a look at the type of designs you’ll like to use, Then look at where you can market these singlets, who will be buying them?

Once you have got that covered, then look at who is Already doing that, and don’t just join the bang wagon, look at why they are selling where they are selling, and see if you can ‘beat’ that by finding a bigger market to sell to.

For Example, you’ve made singlets for surfers to wear, they fit well, people have told you they are great to wear when they get out of the beach or the pool. So where else can you go from there?

Well where else does liquid present its self? Yep in the gym! how about joggers? sporting clubs? bodybuilders? I’m sure they would be interested in a singlet that is great to wear when your all sweaty from your workout.

How do you know? Well you have your surfer customers selling you that when they jump out of the beach, and put on the singlet, the water isn’t making it stick to them, they feel great on.

The Bigger picture to the little guy is why we are all here!

So there’s another market you’ve pushed into. Just like that!

The point here is this, If your listening to same advice and then using that advice, just like all the others around you, Do you think your brand is going to stand out? what else can your brand offer that the others don’t already?

Advice, Tips , information is ALWAYS good, but take it and put your own spin on it, learn to pick out things that relate to you,and use that in the way you want it, and not how the other brands will use it.

This will create a brand that looked at the advice, took it in, but did it’s own thing with it, and created something that stands out. At the end of the day don’t let the advice you get RUN your clothing line, Take on the advice, look at all the information you can get, But still keep your clothing brands story intact.

We all want to stand out, but we need to all stand out differently.

They started around 8 or 9 years ago and their t-shirts are about making a statement. It could be about your favourite TV show as a kid, it could be a personal statement, or it could just be something amusing.

Brooklyn Industries store launched on the market the graphic t-shirt made from 14 recycled plastic water bottles.

Rethink Fabric, on the other hand, is spinning bottles into polyester and then into tees. The cool thing about Rethink is that they are actually thinking at collecting the ‘’plastic shirts’’ and recycle them into new shirts. Talk about perseverance or what? And just for the record…t-shirts can’t be turned back into plastic bottles.

100 Percent Green Tee uses 50% PCR plastic and 50% organic recycled cotton. The cool or uncool thing about these tees (there are different points of view here) is that they all have eco sayings on them.

Ecodot makes t-shirts is using recycled cotton (and sometimes polyester). The percentage is 65% cotton, 35% plastic bottles. Kids, grandpas and grandmas, mums and dads, skinny or chubby, everybody can find a tee at Ecodot.

TH: When did you start embracing your artistic abilities?

Entering College was an immense accomplishment and opened my eyes further to the endless possibilities to utilize my art. I studied architecture, graphic design and business and was blessed to obtain my bachelors. Looking back, from 1990 to 1994 I was a refugee with my family so graduating college opened my mind and I knew that anything was possible.

TH: Where is Alamic going?

I plan to continue the Almaic brand through developing quality products and thought provoking graphics. I recently launched the “Graphic NovelTee” series where I will release a T shirt every month that can further push my ideas to the world. The series began as challenge for my self to be more active in my brand and stay fresh in peoples minds.

1. A tshirt laptop case

-  not only is this a practical use of an old tee, but it is also a fashionable one (yeah I’m a girl, I admit… I love fashion)

- what’s even cooler is that it has three compartments, plus this way you have a clean laptop

2. A skirt (talk about being a girl or what…)

-          you’ll need scissors and quite a big old tee

-          for extra refinement add a snap or a tie string at the waist

3. A necklace

-          cut into one-inch strips a tshirt and stretch the strips

-          sew or tie the strips together

4. A headband

-          cut a 1.5 inch strip from the bottom of the tshirt

-          the length should be equal to your head length minus 2 inches

-          fold in half lengthwise and pin in place

-          sew along the edge

-          hand stich a flower over the seam (you can find that type of flowers in any accessories stores)

We can trace back this Huge global event to about August, 2007. But it hit home for everyone in 2008 when the GFC really kicked off, I don’t have to go into a big amount of detail to explain about bad it was for most middle class people across the USA and around the world. A lot of people lost there jobs, homes….lives.

And the clothing industry met the same fate as many banks and small businesses around the world did, tons and tons of clothing lines gone over night. Clothing makers everywhere could no longer afford there work places, offices, workers or even cotton. As many T-Shirt Brands will know, cotton prices have been very volatile in recent times.

So Where are the Clothing Brands today? Are we better or worse? Is the industry Recovering? What do today’s numbers say and what do they predict for the clothing industry future? I’ll try to cover this and show you some interesting numbers that matter to us T-Shirt Designers, makers , sellers!

Great way of Looking at the big picture!

Interesting Numbers…..

Firstly I’ll get to current Stats and numbers that give us a bigger picture of what we are dealing with right now.

• The world clothing and textile industry (clothing, textiles, footwear) reached $2,560 trillion in 2010
• Organically grown cotton had a rise to over $5 billion in 2010
• American’s spent on average, $1747 in 2010 on Clothing, Footwear and Services related to them.

These Three Stats do show a pretty good big picture for our clothing industry, But we do know that lots more brands and clothing line’s have since closed up shop.

One Stat that makes me really think is this: Online Shopping in the USA Alone made $226 billion in 2012. This is huge,and many fashion labels are to thank for that.

And even better is according to projections released by Forrester Research Inc , by 2016 American’s will spend $327 billion that year shopping online.

And to lower costs of running real brick and mortar shops, hiring more workers, storing stock, plus all the bills that go with running a store, More and more brands are moving

to the world of online shopping.

And whats great about shopping online? We’ll its done at home in your underwear, on your smartphone…..in your underwear. And with gadgets like iPad’s and other devices like these landing in more and more peoples laps

Online shopping from anywhere in the world, any time, with little to no hassles that ‘Real Life’ shopping has these days.

It’s a big online world out there! And it’s getting Bigger!

Spending Money on your brand online!

More people Spend more money online then what they would have in a real store , this is due to a number of factors.

More aggressive discounting on products can be done in online stores, And better deals them self’s can be done (24hr daily deals, free postage , buy one get one half price,Like our Facebook page for Discount codes etc.) And these can be made up in seconds online,which would take a real store days or even weeks to prepare.

And as i wrote before, Smartphones and tablet sale’s have gone thru the roof over the past 2-3 years which has added to people spending there money online Via there handheld devices.

Quick Tip: Does your website work well on smartphones and tablets? How can you check? Well do you have a smartphone or iPad? I’m guessing you know your own web address…Check out your own website on your device, make a look at it, check to make sure all the links work, all the pages look clean and fit on the screen, Are there any bugs or glitches? get your buddy’s to check out your website on there smartphones and see what they think of it.

So where has the GFC left the clothing industry, And where do you fit into all of this?

To look at the overview of the industry in 2013, Its more online today then it was in 2008, there are more people today buying clothing online then ever before. And more people today are spending more cash online then in real retail stores.

While a few of the big guys fell when the GFC hit, along with a huge bunch of the little guys, there are still a crazy amount of really great clothing brands online today, with new and interesting designs and styles. They are pushing the extreme’s in design and its paying off for them.

Some businesses will always find it hard to be successful, Some it will come easy to them, but at the end of the day, its all about what your customers like to see from you, and what they are willing to pay for that.

But if your a little guy right now, getting those few sales here and there. Keep pushing! No ones dream happens over night, and building a successful brand is hard, most likely one of the hardest things you’ll do in your life. BUT if and when you make it to what you think successful is to you, it will all be worth it. You’ll make mistakes along the way, probably more then you’d like to make, but you’ll learn from them,and change your brand to make sure those mistakes don’t happen again, and your brand will be stronger for it.

Remember, Online spending is improving every year, more and more people, so use your great brand and get out there and be apart of this great story we call ‘The Clothing Industry!’

I am 150% sure you’ve read a article somewhere online or in a magazine about how to make your clothing brand stand out and be different from the rest.

And they do have some okay tips and ideas, but somehow they all seem to missing that real information, that fresh take on how it could be done.

One thing i always point out to people that i speak to about this subject is that most of the articles are written by business people, which is a good thing but these business people are not in the business you or i are in. They think your selling 5,000 shirts a day worldwide and they think you want that little bit extra to get even more sales.

If you are selling 5,000 shirts a day…..well you most likely know more then i do so just skip this part.

But how can the rest of us stand out? the little guy selling 50-100 shirts a week or even smaller. I’ll go over tips and advice i have used over the years with my own brand.

Look at the others!

If you don’t know, Niche Markets are the brands that all sell kinda the same tee’s to kinda the same people (In Simple terms of course)

Have a look at what others are doing, i can’t tell you how many times people ask me how to be different then other brands in there niche but yet they haven’t looked at what the other brands are doing.

Have a look at the type of shirts they have, slim fit? Buttons? what kind of printing are they using? Take a look at the feed back from there customers on there Facebook pages or there twitter.

Or if your going up against a big brand, Google there sales from the past year,you might find some of the latest reports on sales trends (What sells, what doesn’t)

Take a look at there prices on there range, and the best tip…….Email them! a simple email asking about there clothing is the hands down best way to get the information you want.

You don’t have to tell them your the enemy, just ask them how there sales have gone this/last year. Ask them what was there best sellers and take a look at them sellers to see why they are selling.

And then take all that information and put it up against your own designs and what you hope your products will be like, see where you can improve on your product as a whole.

Have they moved on from using heavy cottons? have they gone Eco-friendly? will you be able to beat there prices while still keeping a good profit for your hard work?

Customer Service is What Really Matters

Customer Service is Key to Being different!

Ever gone into a store, wanting to buy a shirt you’ve seen for weeks only to leave after 10 minutes because the assistants where texting away to there friends, and you couldn’t find your size?

Well the equal to that online is someone emailing you about something in your product range and you take 5 days to get back to them. By then they have forgotten, and they won’t be happy when you finally do email them back.

Stand out with your customer service, If you say you will get back to all emails within 24 hours…..Then mean it! Make time every day to get back to all your emails from customers, It’s the number one thing ANY business can do, And if done with quick timing and you answer any questions they have, they are more likely to be happy with your clothing brand and come back again, and they’ll bring there friends and family next time.

Don’t Just Sell Shirts, Sell Your Clothing Brand Image!

I’m a huge Motorsports fan, I’ve loved Formula one since i was a little kid,My all time driver is Mark Webber(Aussie F1 Driver) He race’s for Red Bull Racing. You wondering what this has to do with T-Shirts?

Well i don’t drink Red Bull, i have before like most of us designers have, but i’ll never buy it and keep it in my fridge. Don’t get me wrong i like the drink , but i’m not buying the Product they are selling, I’m buying the brand image they sell.

I’m buying the fact that Red Bull have there logo all over my All time drivers racing car,which leads to me buying there shirts,clothing, diecast toys (yeah i’m a nerd!) which means they just haven’t made a few bucks from a can of drink, they have made a lot more from me by selling the idea of there brand.

This is why they are so successful in what they do, and you can apply that same idea to your clothing brand. Don’t just sell your shirts. Sell your Brand. With my own brand i come up with a little story about each shirt, i take what my idea was, and what i was thinking and create a short story about it. Selling the Meaning of it, give’s it more value,because it adds something special, your customers will buy into the brand idea and in turn, they will be return customers.

Facebook as of September 2012 has over 1 BILLION active Users, Twitter Has over 200 Million Active Users (as of 2012). Google+ has over 235 Million Active Users, and as of October 2012, Tumblr has over 77 million blogs with 13.4 million unique visitors in the USA alone!

These numbers all speak for themselves. If your NOT using social media to put your brand out there, then in some peoples view, you don’t have a brand at all. And all these platforms are connected so your Facebook fans most likely use Twitter, and vice versa. This is called Multi-Platform Social Networking. And this alone can help ANY clothing brand reach more customers and have there name reach out far and wide.

I’m going to go over a few tips and give some advice for using social networks to reach new customers, and keep the ones you already have.

The More Likes/Followers, doesn’t mean success!

While having 10,000 Likes on your Facebook Page or 4,000 twitter followers is a really cool thing, it doesn’t mean that each of these people are really “Liking” or “Following” what your saying.

I’d much rather have 1,000 REAL customers who i can talk with, get feedback from then having 10,000 people who won’t say a word back. So Finding people that are into what you have to offer is key for success online.

Posting on forums, telling your Facebook friends about your brand, or tweeting your family and friends to share about your different social media outlets is a really great way of getting real people that can connect to you and your brand.

Advertising Using Social Media

Facebook advertising is growing every year, more and more brands,companies are using facebook adverts to get there pages out there, First its a great way to get more people liking and sharing your page and products.Second it isn’t that pricy to do. Spending as little as $30-50  a month on facebook advertising can net you anywhere from 30-75 more people liking your page,and possibly checking out your products and picking up a few sweet looking tee’s from you website.

If ONE person does that a month, the adverts have paid for themselfs already,anything more is a bonus!

Advertising with Facebook Isn’t as Pricy as you might think!

Twitter advertising is a little different, the Focus for twitter is getting people to retweet what your already tweeting.Lots of places offer services that allow you to buy tweets from other people that will go ahead and retweet your tweet you’d like to be advertised. The Main website that most people like to use for this is BuySellAds.com Its a great place for not only getting your brand advertised on other websites with advert banners & more, but you can also buy tweets from some of the biggest people on twitter in the niche market your in. If someone could tweet your brand to 20,000 of there followers , it could work wonders for your other social networks(Eg: Tweeting about your facebook page)

It’s different type of advertising,but maybe that’s what you need!

Why Are You NOT Blogging Already!!

If you are selling T-shirts, or a whole range in your Brand, and you are not Writing a blog about your brand, then in my view, you are missing a HUGE market of your customers.

Blogs are everywhere on the internet, and that’s because we all have something we want to talk about, and alot of people have views the same as some people writing about the topics there into.

So if your into T-shirts…which you are! then you need to blog about it. Telling people about your brand on a blog is one of the best ways to reach new people. Topics are almost endless.Blogging about how you print your shirts, how you came up with a design idea, maybe you have some one wearing your tee in pics (skaters,surfers,sporting people,even actors!)You could tell people about your self and how your brand came to be, and if you run out of ideas, check out Tee hunters Blog! yeah, look up the top and click BLOG, and see some great ways to blog about your brand.

Tumblr has seen a lot of growth over the last 2 years, millions of people have blogs on tumblr, with almost ANYTHING you can think of, including clothing brands. You could blog with them,by sharing each others posts,Working with

other online clothing brands just like yours, could help both brands reach new people. Tumblr is easy to use for anyone, and with a huge range of options and its FREE!

In my view, its hands down the Best Free blogging Website in the world.

Hopefully you’ve picked up some ideas, and are working away at getting your social network even bigger and better! So start a facebook page, Twitter account and start to spread the word about your Brand!

I’m going to put it out there, Yes each of us shirt lovers, designers, printers love shirts, if money wasn’t an option, i know that I’d still be doing the same thing today…Creating Shirts.

We have a love for it, we all do, but love can only take you so far, and it won’t pay the rent no matter how hard you try.

So we need to make a living from our love of shirts. But how much can we make? We’ll that depends on many things, but what we can control is what goes into creating a shirt, and how to make sure these costs are not taking up our hard earned profit. I’ll also go into a few rules you could follow when just starting out to help along the way.

Now i have to assume two things while writing this, that you are about to start creating shirts, or you already are and your looking for tips on lower the cost of creating your brand.

First things first – We are not all billionaire’s that buy 100,000 shirts a week to sell worldwide, so getting china made shirts for a nickel each isn’t in our range.

Rule one: Go Local! 

Chances are that finding local shirt suppliers to build your shirt range isn’t that hard of a task, Google comes to mind,simply googling your local area and “t-shirt suppliers” in the search will surely find you some good information.

But it also means that you could lower your shipping costs,picking up blank shirts and taking them to your printer(or doing them yourself) could save you hundreds in shipping costs already.

Rule two: Save money by researching your market!

This is a mistake i made when starting my own clothing brand. At the time, i was kinda……lets say “biggish” so my T-shirt sizes was also kinda biggish.So my thinking was is”Well if I’m a Extra Large….Then so is everyone else”.

Don’t fall into that, you need to look at your market. For Example: If your selling women’s fitness shirts,  Are you more likely to buy bigger and bigger sizes, or smaller sizes to suit the type of people your hoping to sell to?

Having XXXX Large shirts to sell to fitness women probably is a waste of money. Most blank T-shirt makers charge more for higher sizes, and if that size isn’t likely to be your best selling size, should you stick with it anyway?

As your market grows, this will have to be a rule to take another look at, and get feed back from your customer base, but for starters its a good way to save your cash.

So. Hopefully you’ve already picked up a tip of two already, so lets get into pricing of a T-shirt.

First thing you’ll need to look at:

What kinda of shirt am i looking for? Slim fit, surfy type? V-neck? button up? dyed,is it made out of candy?

It’s important to know what will suit your designs and what your market is into. Shirts can range anywhere from a few bucks each, all the way up to $10-15 & and even $20 each.

It depends on what and who your selling to. Are you selling shirts with little logos on them at a rock concert for a friends band? Would you need $20 shirts then?

Or are you trying to sell to high end retail stores that sell Jeans for $500 a pair?

Second thing you’ll need to look at:

Printing cost. Are you going to out source printing to the many many many companies in the USA & around the world that print clothing.

Or are you handy with these things and going to print from your home or small warehouse?

Out Sourcing is the easier and cheaper way in the short/medium term. You wont have to be paying to buy new printing stock (inks, toners, screens, digital screen, and tons more printing equipment)

And you wont have to slave over them for hours on end,which in turn will save you time (time is Money!)

Look around at different companies, What are there set up charges? how much does it cost per shirt? what are there minimums for printing? All really good questions to be asking.

Look for what your willing to pay for and go with that. Getting online free quotes are also a really great way to compare there business and how much this is all going to cost.

Last but not Least….Packaging, Shipping, Storage

Packaging is a great way for clothing brands to be different then others, as a customer simply getting Shirts in a boring old postage bag isn’t that great, we all know the feeling of getting a package in the mail that we have been waiting for.

So wouldn’t that feeling be even better when they opened it and found that they got some free flyers, or a sticker or two, maybe a free discount code to go along with? It’s nothing huge, but it tells them that they are special,and that you care enough about your customers that you can take the time and in most cases money just to show a little thank you.

Make sure you get your shipping costs right. You don’t want to charge $5.00 for shipping and when you go to post your shirts out, you get to the post office and its $6.55 each to post. Yes its only an extra $1.55, but that’s YOUR extra $1.55 and it will quickly add up as your sell more shirts. If you where to post 15 shirts a week with a loss of $1.55 just on postage that’s close to $24! and in a year thats over $1200!

And Storage. Are you storing your shirts at home? do you have room? or will you have to pay for storage? Try to make room in your home for shirts, keep them away from cold or wet places and keep them away from electricity ports.

This will save you money on storage costs,and possible damages from fire or water.

So Lets make a quick Cost Break Down on Pricing a Shirt with the advice above:

So You’ve find your supplier, he charges you $5 a shirt. You’ll need about 30 Shirts for your next big design. = $150

Then you’ve found a good printer to use and you print with them = $4.65 per shirt Plus $150 Setup = $289.50

With a total of $448.50. Divide your total by the number of shirts you have, in this case- 30 Shirts = $14.95 Per shirt.

So you’ll want to make sure your selling your shirts for ATLEAST $14.95 each in this Case above. I’d aim for a number you think is fair and what you think your product is worth, But also ask your customers about your prices and see if they feel they are getting what they pay for.

Okay! Thats the simple break down of pricing your clothing, with a few tips and advice thrown in there. I know this isn’t the shortest article you’ve read today but its worth reading up on, at the end of the day, if you want to make a living out of creating really great shirts, then you need to understand how to price your shirts for profit. As I said at the start…..Its a simple on the outside question.
