This is one of my new favorite lettering effects in Procreate! A couple years ago, I showed how to do something similar in Photoshop, so I thought, “Why not try it in Procreate?” Turns out, it’s even easier in Procreate! I love how it looks with multiple letters, too. This week, we’re creating a paper cut out effect in Procreate. Read on to see how and pick up the colors + brush used in the tut for free!

Here’s a quick recap of how we created a paper cut out effect in Procreate:

Apply your darkest color to the background, then on a new layer, create a light color fill and mask out your typography.

Beneath your lightest layer and above the dark layer, draw your first squiggly shape and fill with desired color. Repeat with the number of colors you’d like. Alter the squiggly so it never feels too repetitive from the layer above or below it.

Make a black version of each squiggly, right below it. For each black version, warp its shape, add a gaussian blur, set the blend mode to multiply and reduce the opacity (to 50-70%). This will give a believable shadow to your squiggly shapes.

Next, create a layer above each colored squiggly layer. Apply a clipping mask, set the blend mode to multiply and reduce the opacity slightly (to 50-70%). Use the default Carbon Stick brush found in the Charcoals brush category to brush a texture on these layers. You should be using the same color of the squiggly shape below the texture layer for each texture.

Finally, select the layer mask applied to the light layer, create a new layer beneath it and fill with black. Tap the shape down and to the right a few times. Apply a motion blur in the same direction, then apply a slight gaussian blur. Apply a multiply blend mode and reduce the opacity as desired for the final paper cut out look. Done!

It’s the last Thursday in August, which means it’s time for your free September 2019 desktop wallpapers! This month’s wallpaper was entirely created in Procreate, with just the dates added in using Photoshop and my font, Miss Magnolia. For more on Procreate floral doodles, check out my free course, Procreate for Beginners! This month’s lettering was created by using my Signature Marker brush in my Font Lovers Procreate brush set. The doodles are a mix of the signature marker + my free monoweight brush (available in the Resource Library). For the dates, ‘R’ is for Thursday, to distinguish it from a same-sized Tuesday ‘T’ at a glance.

The download includes the September 2019 desktop wallpapers in two common resolutions: 1280x1024px and 1920x1080px, with and without dates. I’ve left the year off of the ‘no-dates’ versions, so you can use it for any September in the future, too!

I like to recap the month and look ahead in these wallpaper posts. Here’s what’s coming up in September!

In August, Spence and I put the finishing touches on our new studio! We’re releasing a full studio tour video on September 10th, so be sure to check back then – you won’t want to miss it! (Get notified when it goes live by subscribing to my YouTube channel + hitting the bell icon!)

In September, I’ll be finishing up recording a brand new Procreate course! I just completed the projects for the class and can’t wait to get them all recorded and edited. I don’t want to give away too much yet, but I’m including a brand new brush set with the course, so I’m extra excited for this one It’s very beginner friendly, but those with experience in Procreate will definitely learn a lot, too!

For now, let’s get to these wallpapers!

It’s the last day in July, which means it’s time for your free August 2019 desktop wallpapers! For more on Procreate flourishing + basics, check out my free course, Procreate for Beginners! I really enjoyed altering my flourish style a bit for July’s wallpaper, so I wanted to play around some more for August!
The download includes the August 2019 desktop wallpapers in two common resolutions: 1280x1024px and 1920x1080px, with and without dates. I’ve left the year off of the ‘no-dates’ versions, so you can use it for any August in the future, too!

I like to recap the month and look ahead in these wallpaper posts. Here’s what’s coming up in August!

In July, Spence and I overhauled my studio space. We updated our lighting, camera equipment, layout, paint and even got some shiplap on the walls A full studio tour is coming soon, promise!

I’ve now officially switched back to weekly tutorials on YouTube. Some tutorials will have a corresponding blog post, others won’t, so the best way to stay updated is hitting that bell icon over on my channel! You can expect to see a lot more lettering + Procreate tutorials + projects in the weeks to come with a bunch of helpful freebies, especially if you’re just getting started or are looking to improve.

This month, we’ll be recording a bunch of new content that I can’t wait to share. My mom will be in town keeping Tuesday company, so we should be able to get a lot done in a short amount of time Yay, family!

For now, though, let’s get to these wallpapers!

A while back, I created this tutorial where I shared 10 lettering enhancements anyone can do. The responses to the video have been amazing, so this week I wanted to take things a step further with a lettering shadows version! Adding shadows to lettering can really takes things to the next pop-off-the-page level. The best part is they are super simple to implement! Today I’m sharing 10 lettering shadows anyone can do – I even included a free download with them all listed out below Read on to see the full video!

Here’s a quick recap of 10 lettering shadows anyone can do!

Monoweight ‘hug”: Attach a single weight line to the edges of your base letter.

Drop Shadow: Create a duplicate base letter offset and behind your original.

Long Shadow: Recreate a drop shadow, connecting extremities and filling in any white space.

Color Stacked Shadow: Recreate the long shadow, adding an additional layer of a different color.

Hatched Shadow: Place repeating lines that are evenly spaced, similarly angled and the same length around your letter. Place these where your shadow should fall.

Floating Shadow: Recreate the monoweight hug, but this time leave a space between the base letter and the single line shadow. Make sure to leave that space consistent all the way around your letter.

Multiple Floating Shadows: Repeat the floating shadow, making each additional shadow line slightly offset from the previous one.

Short Shadow + Monoweight Hug: Create a short shadow by making a block letter and filling it in. Apply a monoweight hug to the edges of your base letter.

Inner Shadow: Place a fine line shadow along the edges of your letter. Use the base letter’s color to blend the darker color until a smooth transition occurs. Repeat as needed for darker shadows.

Ribbon/Overlap Shadows: Use a script style letter as your base. Place a small amount of darker ink where overlaps will occur. Use the lighter color to blend the darker color until a smooth color transition is achieved.

A few weeks ago, I asked on my Instagram if anyone wanted to learn how to make animated gifs in Procreate. After reading through the responses, I knew I couldn’t stop with just one! So I created 2 tutorials The first one is meant for beginners: getting the basics down + understanding how the file needs to be built. The second tutorial is a bit more advanced, since we utilize masking to make ‘drawn in’ lettering. Now that Procreate offers an export option for animated mp4s, it’s even easier to post your animations straight to instagram. Read on to see both tutorials!

Extra info to keep in mind: Instagram requires a video be at least 3 seconds long to post. If your video is less than 3 seconds, you can make a copy of all of your groups and paste them all above the current ones to lengthen the animation. You can also reduce the speed of the frame rate to lengthen it.

Here are some quick tips to remember when you make animated gifs in Procreate:

Your animation will build from the bottom layer to the top layer. Each layer is considered a frame and all layers must be turned on when you export.

Export as an animated gif to view the looping animation in your photos folder. Export as an animated mp4 if you plan to post to Instagram and be sure it’s at least 3 seconds long.

If you’re using more than one layer to create the artwork of an individual frame, utilize your groups.

If you run out of available layers, make a duplicate file to maintain a non-destructive version of your work, then in the duplicated file, begin flattening groups to open up more available layers.

Wondering how many layers you have access to? Go to the wrench > canvas > canvas information.

Chalk marker and traditional chalk lettering have been popular for a while now and they don’t seem to be letting up any time soon! While I love both, there’s soooo much less mess with chalk markers, so it makes them a little quicker and easier to experiment with. I had a thought the other week about using a wet paintbrush with my chalk markers to simulate depth. That idea ran into creating a paint streak effect, which led me to experimenting with fine line highlights and shadows. As I came out of that rabbit hole, I was so excited all of my experiments actually came out the way I had hoped, or better! This week, I’m sharing exactly what I did (including other effects), so read on for 10 chalk marker effects anyone can do!

Here’s a full list of the 10 chalk marker effects anyone can do:

1. Block Letters

Draw your base lettering, then add a line of weight on each side of that base lettering for consistent block letters.

2. Block Letter Outlines

Add an outline around each block letter in a different color than your block letters (white is shown).

3. 3D Outline

Make your block letters stand out even more by making them 3D! Refer to the cheat sheet above for how to create your 3D outlines.

4. 3D Shading

Shade in your outline with at least 2 different colors to simulate depth even more. Refer to the 3D cheat sheet for color placement.

5. Ombre

Grab a color that will mix well with your base color (yellow on top of pink is shown). Pump out some color in an open area of your chalkboard. Using a paintbrush, pick up that new color and begin painting on top of the base color, thicker at the top, then mixing with the base color as you move down to create the ombre.

6. Inline

Recreate your base lettering on top of your block lettering (single line letters), or use dots (as shown).

7. Script Depth

Using your paintbrush with a little bit of water, pull chalk away from areas that are being overlapped throughout your script word. These open areas where the black peeks through will give a 3D look to your script lettering.

8. Fine Highlights

Reference the highlight cheat sheet above and paint thin highlights that hug the sides of your letters. Once again, pump out some chalk and use your paintbrush to paint them in.

9. Floating Shadows

Reference the shadow cheat sheet above and paint thin shadows a consistent space from the edge of the letters. Use your paintbrush to paint these so they’re nice and thin.

10. Paint Streaks

Pump out 2 similar colors as your base script lettering. Use your paintbrush and the brightest of the two colors to randomly paint chalk paint streaks throughout the word. Next, grab your second color and repeat the same process for a painterly look.

It’s the last Thursday in June, which means it’s time for your free July 2019 desktop wallpapers! This month’s wallpaper was entirely created in Procreate, with just the dates added in using Photoshop and my font, Miss Magnolia. If you checked out my free course, Procreate for Beginners, you saw me creating flourishes in the second project. This month, I wanted to go a little crazier with my flourishing and make it fancy with a touch of gold The gold is from my Procreate metallic texture kit and you can learn more about flourishing here. All of the lettering + doodles were made using my free Procreate Monoweight Brush (available in the Resource Library). For the dates, ‘R’ is for Thursday, to distinguish it from a same-sized Tuesday ‘T’ at a glance.

The download includes the July 2019 desktop wallpapers in two common resolutions: 1280x1024px and 1920x1080px, with and without dates. I’ve left the year off of the ‘no-dates’ versions, so you can use it for any July in the future, too!

I like to recap the month and look ahead in these wallpaper posts. Here’s what’s coming up in July!

We just finished up our first open enrollment of the year for Learn Font Making! I always get so excited after enrollment closes because that’s when the fonts start getting made! It’s so inspiring to see the artwork coming out of the class and the success stories from new font makers If you missed this past enrollment, I’ll be reopening the course one last time this year in late fall/early winter. Sign up here and you’ll get an email from me once we get closer to the date!

Big things are happening behind the scenes this month! Spence and I are renovating our home studio! Over the last couple of months, we’ve upgraded our lighting setup + camera equipment and now it’s time to rearrange furniture and paint. All of the upgrades are being put in place because I’m going back to weekly tutorials! Some videos won’t have a corresponding blog post, so you’ll want to subscribe to my YouTube channel to see every new vid.

If you aren’t a YouTube subscriber yet, head over here, subscribe and hit that bell so you don’t miss the new vids! If you’re already a subscriber, be sure to hit the bell icon so you’ll get notified of all the free content coming your way. You’ll be seeing my face a lot more in the vids now, too + I’m realllly excited to share all the tutorials I have lined up for you!

Phew! Until then, let’s get to these wallpapers!

*If you have an iPad that gives you an ‘exceeding device’s capabilities’ error, here’s a workaround: Download and open the printable version of the guides (directly below), you can then screenshot each guide (or whichever ones you like), create a new procreate file then add > insert a photo and grab one of those screenshots to use as a base, then just create a new layer right above it to letter on. Not the ideal situation, but will give you the same result! If you’re in my free Procreate for Beginners class, you can see how this is done in the video titled: Preparing Lettering for Font Making.

Here are the written instructions for how to use your free Procreate lettering guides:

First, open this post on your iPad and hit the download button above to download your free file. Once downloaded, hit the export icon in the top right corner of your iPad’s screen and choose ‘copy to Procreate’. The file should load right in to Procreate – if you’re already in another Procreate file, hit ‘gallery’ in the upper left and it should be the first file you see.

When you open the file and hit your layers icon in the upper right, you’ll see a bunch of groups. Navigate to the type of guide you’d like to use (each group is labeled with the type of guide). Turn the visibility on for that group (the little checkbox to the right of the group name) and make sure the visibility for ALL other groups is turned off.

Toggle down the group (hit the little ‘>’ so it faces downward).

Select the layer titled ‘letter on this layer’. Grab your favorite brush and begin lettering on that layer, following the guide!

If you run out of space on the layer you’re on, create a new layer above it by hitting the ‘+’ in the upper right of your layer’s palette. Turn off the visibility of your previous layer, make sure the new layer is selected, and continue lettering.

To preview your lettering without the guide, simply turn off its visibility by unchecking its box.

In my course, Learn Font Making, I take you through all the steps to prepare your lettering for font making, convert it into a working, professional font and I share my best tips for selling your font, too. I’m often asked by students is if I think the market is too saturated for new font makers. Although converting your lettering into a sellable font *is* a process, the fact the font making market is booming right now should not hold you back from starting; it should actually do the opposite. In this week’s video, I share my perspective about the saturation of the font market. I also share tips to stand apart from the crowd to get your fonts noticed by those buyers. Read on for it all!

Is the market is too saturated for new font makers? Here’s a summary:

The market is more saturated now, but saturation is caused by demand and demand occurs when a product is *selling*

Entering this market means there will be buyers for your product. You can determine the sellability of your font by a few other things.

Did you do your selling research?

Look at popular fonts in different marketplaces. What do they have in common? How do they make you feel when you see them? What styles are they generally in? Are there characteristics that set them apart? What buyer would purchase them and what would that buyer use them for?

Did you execute your font to the best of your ability?

Did you take the extra time for the small details? Smooth out rough edges? Incorporate extra features?

Did you apply the notes you took from your selling research to your font? Is your font a true representation of your style (no copy-cats!)?

Are you being the font designer you would buy from?

Did you spend quality time creating your mockups?

Are you using paid or your own unique mockups? Have you shown all the ways your font can be used? What your buyer could use your font for? What feel it’s intended for (modern, fancy, fun, children, etc.)? Your mockups are your most powerful selling tool, so take your time with them!

By answering and executing on these 3 simple steps, your font’s potential can skyrocket.

To sum things up: do not let the market intimidate you! Use it to your advantage and you can stand apart, regardless of your current social following. Regardless if this is your first font.

I remember sitting in my Color Theory 2 class at SCAD (12 years ago!) and we were given an assignment we had to use gouache for. ‘Gouache?’ I thought, “Can’t be that different from acrylics, can it?”

It was the first time I had ever heard of it, let alone had any knowledge of how to use it. Since sitting in that classroom that day, I learned that 1. yes, it is definitely different than acrylics and 2. it’s actually pretty amazing.

In this week’s tutorial, I’m taking you through gouache basics – how to mix colors, water ratios + what makes it so amazing to work with. Together, we’ll paint leafy gouache letters (or shapes!) that can be used for wall art, stationery or gifts! Read on to see it all!

Here are some tips for using gouache to paint leafy gouache letters!

What gouache is:

Gouache is different than watercolor in that it is opaque. Its composition includes white pigment or chalk to obtain this opaqueness. It’s similar to watercolor in that it can be ‘re-awakened’ once it has dried and you mix it with water to use it. You can also dilute it down enough where you can obtain some opacity to it like watercolor. It dries in a smooth, matte finish and unlike watercolor (but similar to acrylics), you can paint light colors right on top of dark colors; color layer order does not matter. It’s easy to clean since it’s water-based and since you use less water with it than watercolors, you’re not limited to only using it on watercolor paper (though it’s the recommended material of choice).

Painting leafy gouache letters:

Print out the letter of your choice in your favorite font. Trace the back side of the letter using a soft pencil. Trace the front side of the letter using a hard pencil with the paper you’ll paint on underneath. This transfers the shape of your letter onto your paper.

Mix your gouache. Start with one drop of water and add more as needed. Go for a ‘house paint’ consistency – not a paste!

Begin painting one kind of doodle in one color all the way around your letter. Change to a different doodle in a different color and go around your letter again. Repeat until your letter is surrounded by different colored doodles.

Allow to fully dry, then erase away your pencil marks

Done!
