I’ve been meaning to read more YA novels, since I’m attempting to write one. And Random House has taken care of that need! I got an internship today at Wendy Lamb Books, and they gave me 10 books to read over break. So excited!

Just to put all of y(our) minds at ease, our fair-haired teenage genie Camille will be nothing like Jeannie from I Dream of Jeannie. No way! We want to steer clear of all of the crazy oversexed genie stereotypes. Every now and then I google “teenage genie” and I find images from Aladdin (okay, I can’t really claim this is oversexed), I Dream of Jeannie, pictures of Christina Aguilera in the 90s, information on genie costumes (flowy pants and scarves, belly dancing gear), and a few links about Russian sex videos. Here’s hoping that we can revamp the female genie image and one day reign over Google!

p.s. Barbara Eden (Jeannie) pictured above is going to be releasing a memoir soonish. Should be interesting!

I Dream of Jeannie. Aladdin’s Genie. Christina Aguilera’s Genie in a Bottle. Kazaam. Jambi of PeeWee’s Playhouse.

These are all the well-known genies in pop culture. But in a world where Young Adult fiction is gaining in popularity, where are the genies?

Magical beings or not, all creatures have to start somewhere before they grow up. And that’s what Teeny Genies is all about.

Why Teeny Genies? For now we’re starting out at square one, with a small concept that we hope to build a book series on. At this moment our genies are just teeny, tiny ideas, but we hope they will grow into bigger than life characters as we begin to write.

We’re setting out to create the tumultuous, mystical, changing world of the teenage genie. And we’re letting whoever is interested be a part of our writing process. We welcome you as our audience, whether you just want to pop in for something to read or to offer support, constructive criticism, shared experiences in writing, etc. From idea to story, writer’s block to opening scene, we want to share our struggles, breakthroughs, rejections, and triumphs with you. We’ll start with introducing ourselves.

Meet Laura: I love books and find myself lurking in the YA section at my local bookstore more often than not. Blogging about my writing process makes me a bit squeamish, especially since I haven’t completely figured it all out yet. I have always wanted a pony and I know I will never, ever have one. That is probably TMI, so from now on I promise not to go there (often). I'm really into wearing socks at the moment.

Meet Sabrina: As someone who is still always mistaken for a teenager, I’m excited to relive my adolescence through this story. I love gossip, life-changing events, and the paranormal.
