high white giant (storm)

OMG!!! Storm just finished a shed today, and I think he is getting more white with every shed, I always figured he would be darker but he is very light, kinda has a silver tone going on around his jowls/neck area, his body is a high white I would say comparible to a blue tegu, his tail hasn't shed yet, I gotta find my camera, if I can muster up the extra money this summer I'm going t find me a female blue to pair with him, PICS ARE COMIN ASAP!!!!!!

Orchid Bark

What do you guys think of orchid bark as a substrate? I had him on a mixture of coconut husk and cypress mulch but he kept piling it up on one side of his tank and laying on the other. he seems to like the orchid bark better but just wanted to make sure.

Not shedding properly

This is the first time that this has ever happened, my 'gu isn't shedding very well this time around, around her arms, upperback & along her tail it seems that the skin isn't coming off, and just kind of flakes. Other places it's just sticking on, and peeling up. The humidty levels are high, and all of the substrate throughout her whole enclosure is all moist. I've tried soaking her and I've soaked her a few times everyday for the last 2-3 days, and doesn't seem to be helping much.

What can I do to get the shed off of her, and help her to be start shedding better?

Caiman Lizard - year update (with pictures)

So its been a year scense I got my first caiman lizard, Bacardi. Its hard to believe the growth that has happen and the learning. I will have to tweek somethings in the info thread but wow was a rewarding year so far. I got very luck, Bacardi is more like a dog/alligator gross than the name sake animal. He is very calm now and does not tail whip or puff anymore. If I open the cage he comes walking out onto my arm.

Anyway enough talking here are some pictures!

Bacardi when he was at Ben's: these were taken from the ad and I asked for the one pictured. Glad I did he was a cubby little gem!

Here are some from just this morning. Wow how much he has changed. I think Caiman lizards might out compete tegus in the glutton arrena, mine is knocking a tray of snails, some shirmp, talapia, and croc diet each week.

Head shot, the red is just getting brighter and brighter with each shed;

Full boady, and he is calm enough to do this with him everytime. Think he will be a great ambasador.

And a gurth shot, that green is also just getting better and better! I was waiting for him to drab up in color but it hasn't happen!

Now the real work has started, getting a jungle gym of an adult cage set-up.

caiman lizard enclosure ideas and pics anyone?

Im about to get a caiman lizard, I was just wondering how everone has their enclosure set up. I was thinking a tank with water at the bottom and wood/logs out of the water for him to climb, then a ledge he can climb up and lay on to bask? I really like the idea of using water at the bottom for easy cleaning. It will get time to free roam the room on a regular basis. I know they like to dig, I havent found a solution to that yet. Any ideas?

Also, what would be the min size enclosure be for an adult female?

So my tegu has taken to eating his food rather aggressively, and consequently he ate a couple small woodchips today. is this bad? can they digest them? i was worried it might make him constipated or cut his throat on the way down or something.

There's a chance I might be moving up to Boston and living in an apartment if that is the case. Sadly enough, I would not be able to take Sobek with me. This is still not 100% certain but I'd like to get an idea of who might be interested in buying him - and for the right price. He's RTB, tame as a dog but would rather not be held. He'll roam around for a while then walk back into is enclosure so long as the door is open. As of late, he only takes dumps in the bathtub, which is convenient, at least in my case. He's never bit, or snake tailed, or hissed. He's almost 2 years old, and dropping sperm plugs. My pics of him in an old thread are outdated. If you'd like to see updated Sobek, check out my YouTube channel, one of my latest vids is an update on him. I may also be selling my Mali uromastyx pair.

I'm not too interested in shipping as he is huge now, 3+ feet or so. But I will ship if instructed on how to ship such a large lizard, I prefer pickup.

Uv Tube lighting

I'm constructing a 8x4x4 cage for my tegu and i have the heat bulbs they are a 65 watt indoor floodlight and theyll be mounted to 3 porcelain fixtures 2 above the basking spot and 1 in the center of the cage to spread the warmth, I was wondering if there were uvb/uva tube bulbs because i wanted to put 2 4foot tubes along the top back wall, also how much do these lightings cost are they more expensive than a mercury vapor bulb? I will be having about 1.5-2ft of substrate so the lights would be about 3ft away, I'll have to see what the temperatures are with the heat bulbs i most likely wont use all 3 but we'll see.

I was told by a fellow member of a reptile group I frequent, that he spoke with bobby hill on tegus and bobby told him rodents are bad for tegus because they are to high in fat....I have never heard that before, in fact bobby promoted feeding rodents at least once a week, am I missing something here?

I am sure that people that have not witnessed it could or would not believe how much a Tegu can be in tune with their person. Case in point: Tonight Gordo decided to wake up late. It was obvious he was uncomfortable and beginning to shed. I took him out and bathed him for a couple minutes as he didn't want any part of a bath. I fed him in that bathroom and he ate an astounding amount of my turkey, venison, liver, gizzard, egg shell magic mix. He then crawled up into my arms and I proceeded to spend the better part of an hour peeling off skin. He loved it! After I had a huge mound and couldn't find any more skin ready to come off I thought it would be a good idea to get him back to his basking area based upon the prodigious amount he ate. When I started to get up, (he wasn't in my arms), I found that my foot was completely asleep. I struggled to stay upright and not fall. I managed but sat down for a minute to get my balance back. Much to my surprise, Gordo actually seemed concerned and immediately climbed up on me and nuzzled his head into my neck.

Any naysayer can tell me it means that he was cold and needed warmth but there was a heater register putting really warm air which Gordo loves. He by passed it an came to me. Yes, it may be my imagination I think he sensed my problem in some way and tried to help. Non Tegu people should have seen it as they would have been amazed as I was. Once again, these incredible creatures leave me at a loss for words.
I actually teared up. It was real.

Call me an old fart if you will but I know what I know and saw what I saw.

Hi everyone my names Mat and i am the lucky owner of a male Argentine B/W tegu named Gangus. Ive had him for a 1.5 year now. Got him as a hatching from a local breeder and haven't regretted it one bit. I just put a deposit on a red from bobby hill and am super excited!

Hey guys and gals! I've been lurking on the tegu forums for quite some time now. I have read tons of material regarding Argentine tegus as well as Cyclura iguanas and feel that I'm ready to own one. I've owned various reptiles throughout the years and would love to own either of these two walking dinosaurs!

Now, I wouldn't mind having a B&W Tegu that I can devote a lot of time to tame and feed appropriate foods to. At the same time, a Rhino, Caymen cross or Cuban rock iguana sounds tempting too, simply for their ability to become docile as well. Enclosure size is not an issue for me. Bigger is better and I have the space for it. I read all the pros and cons about each except for one...POOP!

Can anyone who owns both species tell me which one smells worse? I assume they both poop the same amount since both get quite large. My wife doesn't mind me getting either one but was simply wondering which one smells less. lol.

In the construction of my new cage, I have built into the plans my exterior humidifier and so far I have it rigged up to blow air through a large metal dryer pipe. My issue is I am afraid it is going to cause too much of a draft, and the air that comes out is cold. Is this an issue, or is a little breeze on the cold side of the cage not going to affect my Tegu? Cage size is 6X4X4.

Another odd issue I am wondering about is the subwoffers in my room. I have an 8" and 10" subwoffer and I listen to a lot of electronic music, Trance, Drum and Bass, House, Dubstep, ect... I know My Dragons don't care about the Bass, I've had my one Dragon for 10 years and I swear she even likes the vibrations haha. So far my Tegu doesn't seem to mind it at all, he doesn't get scared, hide, or even flinch when I turn the bass up... But I am still concerned it might be stressing him even if there is no exteral signs; Your thoughts?

Anyways, on a less serious note, here is little Dexx today... Today was a day of firsts for him, his very first pinky ( he gladly took from me and swallowed in about 2 seconds haha ) and today I decided to throw some blue berries in there for him and he ate those too!

I've been going to LLL Reptile since I was kid, when they had only one store down in Oceanside CA. I use to skate down there from my house all the time when I lived there and the people were cool, their husbandry was great, and they were knowledgeable.

In the past 5 years or so they have changed so dramatically it makes me very upset. I've had the opportunity to talk to the owner ( a very wealthy man who lives on the coast in Carlsbad ) and their main philosophy that he really pushes is to make money. I've seen them push reptiles out of their stores like candy. They tell minimal care needed for each reptile, and A LOT of their herps die because they fail to give COMPLETE husbandry care

With the opening of their 2 newest stores ( Menifee and Mission Valley CA ) I have gone in both posing as someone who knows nothing, and showed interest in different herps, and gotten horrible advice. I sent my friend into the Menifee store once because they had a potentially deadly scorpion for sale ( Androctonus bicolor, a species with LD50 venom ) and I used him as a dummy as well... The advice they gave him was horrible, even saying that he, an inexperienced scorpion owner, could hold them if he was " careful ".

I've had many arguments with the managers about how to properly care for a lot of their " Big Sellers " IE Ball Pythons ( they brag selling 80 a week @ each store ), Chameleons, Tortoise species ( mostly Russian and Sulcata ), Poison Frogs, and the list goes on...

My once loved childhood reptile wonderland has completely changed to the " Petco and Petsmart " of the reptile world, which disappoints and angers me.

Well hello everyone!

First, we gotta say thanks to everyone that helped us out in the beginning. Charlie is a pretty awesome little guy. We are definitely in love with Tegus overall. We promised pictures, and you can see them on our thread in the welcome room.

So we noticed about 4-5 days ago, Charlie comfortably burrowed. He hasn't resurfaced... and he was a little chunky. Especially around the base of his tail. After searching through multiple threads, I think it may be safe to say he's entered a nap or hibernation. There were a few threads where some of you said your tegu would disappear a few days at a time or longer (hibernate).

So I guess I'm wondering, will a tegu hibernate at a young age? The pet store owner guessed he was no older than 3 months. Charlie from tip of his nose to tail is about two feet, maybe less. I will not disturb him or uncover him as you all have strongly suggested against that in many threads I read. I have however knocked the temps down to about 80 on the hot side and 70 on the cool side. We are using the night bulb to maintain temps. The substrate is fairly deep (6-10 inches depending on where you are in the enclosure), so depending on where he is, I'm sure his metabolism has slowed due to it being colder.

Any suggestions, tips, opinions... Thanks guys!
