The most popular nightclub is under a big marquee and its catchy, rhythmic music fills the dusty street. Taxi drivers linger nearby, waiting for the late night business of ferrying the bar-goers to hotels, boarding houses and brothels. They also offer their passengers a more unusual service: condoms, along with advice on safe sex. Yesterday’s UNAids report, which shows that almost 30 million people in sub-Saharan Africa are already infected with HIV or Aids, has a particularly chilling relevance to Zambia. The country has one of the world’s highest rates of HIV/Aids infection, with nearly 20% of the adult population infected. Livingstone, a tourist centre perched above Victoria Falls, has the country’s highest infection rate: 31% of adults, according to government statistics. Despite the desperate statistics, the town offers glimpses of hope. A project to train taxi drivers to act as safe sex teachers and mentors is one of several reaching out to groups exposed to the threat of the virus. “Aids is a severe problem here. We all know people who have died and people who are suffering. A taxi driver died recently,” says cabbie David Kanandu. “We’ve learned how to protect ourselves and we are telling others. We give pamphlets and condoms to our passengers. We tell them how to reduce their risks.” Fishermen, army soldiers, truck drivers, teenagers and prostitutes are all targeted in programmes designed at Livingstone’s Sepo centre, which receives funding and training from the Brighton-based International HIV/Aids Alliance. The taxi drivers attended a two-day weekend workshop two months ago and now they are enthusiastic sex counsellors. “This has opened our minds,” says Mr Kanandu. “We’ve learned that having sex must be done with knowledge. That way we can avoid catching Aids.” The taxi drivers hope to expand their programme. They are talking about setting up an outdoor screening of sex education videos near their ranks. “People would come to see the videos and then we could have group discussions,” says Wilson Mvula, 28. A key part of the community programmes is the promotion of voluntary testing and counselling. “Everyone is a winner in the testing,” says nurse Precious Mafo, who runs the Maramba clinic’s testing centre. “Those who are negative are obviously happy and are encouraged to take steps to avoid infection. Those who are positive are counselled to live as positively as possible, to have good diets and habits, and this also helps many people.” Good diet helps, but only to a point. As the UNAids report points out, anti-retroviral drugs are desperately scarce in Africa, and Zambia is no exception. With 1 million Zambians living with HIV and Aids, it is estimated that 100,000 need anti-retrovirals immediately. Jethro Muchindu, 47, found out he was HIV positive in 1987. “I have been doing very well for a long time, but I would really love to get on the anti-retrovirals. Sometimes I get sick and I worry about my recovery. Those drugs would really help.” Out of reach The anti-retrovirals are limited to a few private clinics and the University Teaching hospital in Lusaka. Only a few Zambians can afford the ?325 a year needed for the treatment. “The cost is totally out of reach of most Zambians,” says Daphetone Siame, director of the Zambian programme for the HIV/Aids Alliance. At Hillcrest secondary school more than 100 students cram into a classroom to attend the Family Life Club, an after-class activity that concentrates on sex education. The teenage students groan in disgust when given descriptions of vaginal and anal sex and other sexual behaviour. “Don’t be fooled by their innocence,” says a club organiser. “Many of them, especially the girls, have already had sex. Yet they don’t know very much.” Kaleesh Bwalya, 17, is the head of the club. She stands in front of the group and and captures attention by mentioning headboy Henry Kalubi when describing someone who might carry HIV or other infections. “Look at Henry, he is clean, good looking, he’s a good student, he’s got cash in his pocket. But even he could have an STI,” she says to rounds of laughter. Henry says he does not mind the embarrassment of talking about sex. “As youths we must take up a role in educating one another. We are surrounded by Aids and it is only through education that we can avoid getting it ourselves.”

The refugees, some of whom are thought to have been among the so-called Truckonauts who attempted the voyage in a converted pick-up in 2003, were given lifejackets and taken ashore by the US coastguard. “Hopefully this time they won’t go back,” said Mariana Diaz, a Cuban exile in Miami, who claimed that her nephew, Rafael Diaz Reyes, was one of those aboard the taxi. Similar attempts to reach Florida in floating vehicles in July 2003 and February 2004 ended in his repatriation.

While the hospitality and innate honesty of the Chinese people is well known, there are unscrupulous people everywhere, and Guangzhou is no exception. Foreigners are targeted for any number of scams, among which is the widespread “taxi scam.” How it works Taxi scams have become quite common in Guangzhou, especially during the twice-yearly Canton Fair, but visiting foreigners are always at risk for this petty deceit no matter when they visit. The drivers quote an inflated price, or take roundabout routes to increase their fares and find other creative ways to charge customers extra. Passengers can end up paying from three to 10 times the metered fare during Fair days, in particular, but overcharging takes place year-round. The fact is, overcharging is only one of the ways that cab drivers can defraud foreign customers. Some cab drivers will give change in counterfeit bank notes, while others will not return lost or misplaced luggage to the owners. How to handle it Almost all visiting foreigners have encountered some kind of taxi scam in Guangzhou, many of them during Canton Fair days, but normally they do not know how to handle the problem. Even if they suspect overcharging, their lack of language skills and unwillingness to cause a scene tend to make them pay the extra amount. If foreigners traveling in Guangzhou do not know how to handle this problem, and are affected by the aforementioned language barrier, they are easy targets for scammers. These travelers should not feel powerless, however, since the punishment for taxi scams is severe, and a complaint can cause immediate suspension of a taxi driver’s license by the local authorities. Just knowing this much can help suspicious travelers protect themselves from being overcharged. Capital tax allowances are allowances on fixed assets a business may claim as a deduction from net profit to arrive at the net taxable profit. If a taxi driver does not claim the correct capital tax allowances in the taxi accounts that net taxable profit and the income tax and national insurance payable will be higher than it need be. Hard cash lost to the government that they are not entitled to, your cash. A fixed asset is typically a piece of kit purchased by a business that will be used by that business to generate a profit over a period of time, perhaps more than one year, as opposed to an item that is consumed within the financial year. Items in the category of fixed assets may be plant and machinery, fixtures and fittings, computers and vehicles. For most fixed assets the capital tax allowance consists of an enhanced first year allowance in the year of purchase and writing down allowance in subsequent years. This type of tax allowance spreads the allowance of the amount spent over the life of the asset rather than that item being expensed in full in the year the purchase was made. For small businesses the first year allowance is currently 50%, 2007-08 and in subsequent years the writing down allowance is 25% of the balance. Special rules apply to vehicles and of particular interest when preparing the taxi driver accounts. These special rules certainly affect taxi drivers many of whom will find they are not eligible to claim the 50% first year allowance on their taxi. Vehicles, including taxis are generally excluded from the 50% first year allowance and may not be claimed in the taxi driver accounts. In addition the 25% writing down allowance is restricted to a maximum of 3,000 pounds p.a. The writing down allowance continues until the value of the vehicle is written off for tax purposes or is sold. When a vehicle is sold if the vehicle is sold at a price below the written down value for tax purposes then an additional capital tax allowance can be claimed in the taxi driver accounts. The additional tax allowance is equal to the difference between the price at which the vehicle was sold and the net written down value for tax purposes. When a vehicle is sold at a price above the net written down value for tax purposes there is a deduction in the capital allowances which is called a balancing charge and is equal to the sales value less the written down value for tax purposes. Commercial vehicles are treated differently to cars. First year allowances can be claimed against the purchase price of vans that are deemed to be commercial vehicles. The Inland Revenue website has a list of vans it deems to be a commercial vehicle and the make and model of any van thought by the owner to be a commercial vehicle should check that vehicle against the list when claiming a first year allowance. The writing down allowance on commercial vehicles is not restricted to 3,000 pounds. Capital tax allowances on commercial vehicles is then the same as a typical piece of plant and machinery whereby a 50% first year allowance can be claimed in the first year with a 25% writing down allowance in subsequent years. The capital allowances act 2001 makes a distinction between cars and qualifying hire cars. Cars are subject to the restrictions on capital tax allowances applied to vehicles while qualifying hire cars are not subject to these restrictions in a similar way to which qualifying vans, commercial vehicles are treated. The definition of what constitutes a qualifying hire car as opposed to a car is crucial to taxi drivers when the taxi driver accounts are being prepared either by the taxi driver or the taxi accountant. Simply using a car solely as a taxi is not sufficient to avoid the capital allowance restrictions. Using a vehicle which is deemed to be a qualifying hire vehicle is sufficient to allow a first year allowance and unrestricted writing down allowances to be claimed in the taxi accounts To comply with the definition of a qualifying hire car the vehicle must be of a type that is not commonly used as a private vehicle and would also be unsuitable for use as a private vehicle. Hackney carriages, black cabs and limousines fall into the category of a qualifying hire car and taxi drivers using these types of vehicle may claim the 50% first year allowance and the 25% writing down capital allowance in subsequent years in the taxi driver accounts. Other vehicles used as taxis would not receive the first year allowance but would be subject to writing down allowance of 25% of the original cost in the first year and a further 25% in succeeding years all subject to a maximum of 3,000 pounds per vehicle per annum. Each April our thoughts turn to the coming of spring and the coming of the tax man. I hear a lot of people complaining about taxes at this time of year. Not just that they have to do their taxes and spend hours pouring over old records and trying to figure out indecipherable forms, but also musings and opinions about taxes in general. I often hear the opinion expressed that businesses, property owners and “rich people” do not pay their fair share of taxes. And I agree. I agree that they don’t pay their “fair share” as defined in most people’s minds. But I also think that in certain circumstances, these businesses and people shouldn’t have to pay any taxes. That may sound a bit radical for many people reading this, but allow me to explain my reasoning. First, why are we taxing businesses on their profits? A business exists, whether it is a sole proprietorship or a large international corporation, to make a profit. People create businesses and invest in stocks with the idea that they will get a share of the profits. This is the basis of our system of capitalism. It is the motivation for a free marketplace and private ownership of property. Why would anyone go to the trouble of starting a business unless they expected a significant return on their investment of money and time? Why would you bother buying stock in a company if the company never gave you any dividends (yes, stocks can appreciate, but bear with me)? There comes a point when deciding where to invest your time and money that you have to figure out how much return you need to make your effort worthwhile. If you work at a job and earn $30,000 a year, how much will your business have to make to replace your income? How much more do you want it to make for taking the risk of quitting your job and building a business? If you can’t make much more than the $30,000, it hardly seems worth it to spend all the extra time and take the extra risk of starting the business. So let’s say that you figure you can earn $50,000 with your business. And that is enough to take the risk. But now the government comes along and tells you that you have to pay $7,000 in taxes on your $50,000 business profit. Now you have a choice. Live with less or increase your business income. Living with less defeats the whole purpose so let’s look at increasing your business income. You can either increase your business income by getting more clients, selling more goods or raising your prices. When you are in a less competitive market, raising your prices is the easiest thing to do. So you raise your prices. Now you are earning the $50,000 you wanted in the first place and you have effectively passed your business taxes on to your customers. But not only are your customers paying a higher cost for your product or service but they may also be paying more in sales taxes. They get a double-whammy. If your customers are businesses, they will pass on their increased costs to their customers. This cycle continues until the cost of every business’ taxes are eventually passed on to the consumer - me and you. Let’s look at a specific and simpler example of how this works. I know a person who owns some rental units. The city in which they are located passed a tax on rental units. Some politicians and local activists were anxious to punish the “gouging landlords” and “rental robber-barons”. They figured that they could play Robin Hood and redistribute some of the rich landlord’s profits to the “needy”. Now my friend’s costs have gone up. So what did he do? Naturally, he raised the rents to cover the cost of the additional tax. And since it is easier to accept a reasonable rent increase than to move, his tenants stayed put and paid more. Ironically, most of his tenants are the same people who the politicians and activists consider the “needy”. So now the government takes an extra $20 a month out of their pockets through the “tax on the landlord”. If the tenant is on an assistance program they may get some of this money back. Of course the amount they get back will be reduced by expenses and administrative costs for the government to collect, control and distribute the money. So who really paid for this tax? The landlord? No, in the end it is always people - you and me. All taxes are paid by the citizens themselves, regardless of whether they are paid directly, as in sales and income taxes, or through increased prices of products and services, or through “fees” imposed by governing agencies. How does your car registration “fee” differ from a tax? Not only does each citizen directly or indirectly pay every penny of tax money that is collected in this country, but most people’s perception that the “rich” and “corporations” don’t pay their “fair-share” is accurate. These people and businesses can afford to pay an attorney $10,000 to show them how to save $500,000 in taxes. Most likely, you can’t. The tax laws are made with loopholes for the “rich” and for certain businesses. Part of this is because it is these people who own or control the majority of the property in this country. And no progress can be made with out a significant investment of capital. If these people and businesses are given the right reasons to invest their capital (such as tax breaks) the economy will continue to function and grow. If they are overburdened with taxes they will either move to Bermuda or start a cycle of inflation by raising prices. Either way, you, Joe Citizen, will end up paying more either directly in the form of taxes or indirectly as your cost of living increases. It is a double-edged sword. Joe Citizen wants “rich people” and businesses to pay their fair share (though Joe does not realize that he ends up paying it anyway) but the government knows that they can’t kill the golden goose (and the economy needs a good “goose” every once in a while). So tax laws and regulations are passed which seem to target the “rich people” and businesses but with enough loopholes so that no real tax increase occurs. And the politicians can blame the other party for the loopholes. But both know this is business as usual. Make Joe Citizen feel good about paying his taxes by raising taxes on the “rich” and “wealthy corporations”, but give them loopholes so that little more is accomplished than adding another volume added to the tax code. For the ultimate beach vacation there is no better location than that of “Jomtien Beach” in Thailand which is just a two hours ride in a taxi from Bangkok Airport. The Jomtien Beach is located about two kilometers from its busy counterpart resort of South Pattaya. The Jomtien Beach has good quality white sand and a very long coastline to enjoy. The beach is much more peaceful here than its counterpart of Pattaya further up the coast. The beaches are always kept in a pristine condition by the many vendors who are there to look after all your needs. Along the early part of the straight beach road you will find many souvenir shops, international restaurants, food stalls. But at the far end of the beach road there are very good seafood restaurants and it is where you can find yourself at times the only person soaking up the sun. You can also swim late into the night along a large part of the beach as the sands are floodlit which makes for a very safe environment to swim after the sun has gone down. May be you only want to simply find a quiet bar for any drink of your choosing. Many are available and the prices have to be seen to be believed. Jomtien beach simply has it all without having to travel long distances. But if you fancy a more adventurous evening and want to enjoy a full range of nightlife activities Pattaya is just a few minutes down the coast. Transportation around the Pattaya and Jomtien area is simple. The open pick up cars (Baht buses as they are locally called) are running all the time. Just hail one down and climb aboard. Effective land and rail connections to London Stansted is vital to ensure smooth passage through this iconic transport interchange. Despite its name London Stansted Airport is, like it sister airports Heathrow and Gatwick, not based on London, in fact it is some 30 miles north. I have travelled to and from Stansted Airport for the best part of 18 years, since the early days of the new terminal. IN that time transport links have improved ten fold, with the introduction of a fast direct London-Stansted rail link and regular coach services. Most notably however has been the development of raod infrastructure in and arund the airport over the past decade. So what is the best way to travel to and from Stansted by taxi/chauffeur. As many of you will already know, the market for taxi/chauffeur work is immense. This however does have a downside - with som many operators, large and small, how do you choose the right one for you? When we mention Stansted taxis I suppose the first thing for readers to note is that Stansted does not have a bonafide taxi “rank”. Despite there being signs indicating taxis in the main terminal the row of “taxis’ to the front of the airport are in fact private hire vehicles. Now readers may think, so what? If like me you have ever travelled from Heathrow Airport by london cab you will have hired the cab from the number of licensed taxi ranks at the arrivals area of each terminal - the difference being that the fare is determined by the meter in the cab, not a price from a reception desk. Now as a seasoned traveller I prefer this for a number of reasons - 1. One you can have confidence in the rate being charged as this has been set by the licensing authoirity - in this case - Transport for London 2. The price is what the meter says - no argument. 3. Rate cards on show for you to examine and understand when inside the cab At Stansted, the “taxi rank” is managed by BAA’s preferred taxi operator Checker Cars. Without any bonafide taxis we have established that this is a private hire operation. Based in the airport terminal they do operate pretty much a monopoly which is non-too pleasing to a seasoned traveller like me. They are however, quick, on time, convenient and clean cars - though you do pay a premium. Given that the market for private hire/taxi/chauffeurs is large I would also suggest investigating other locally based operations to Stansted. One local operation operates executive Audi vehicles and are known as Stansted Airport taxi & Chauffeur Services. They are located within 2 minutes drive of the main terminal building, can monitor all flight times from their office base to ensure that they are on hand to take you to wherever you want to go without you paying excessive parking fees, and their cars are always immaculately presented. Their prices are extremely keen too, on some routes almost 30% cheaper than Checkers Cars!! Stansted Airport Taxi & Chauffeur Services can be contacted on +44 [0] 1279 816901 24 hours a day. Given their close proximity to the airport, prompt, reliable service they are currently my stansted taxi choice. If you would prefer not to use an executive car service, then another local service, Herts and Essex taxi Service based in nearby Bishop’s Stortford offer excellent budget value services. Their cars are clean but basic; however their prices are extremely competitive! For those of you that require an environmentally friendly vehicle to collect you from London Stansted, I would recommend Green Tomato Cars. Based in London, their London taxi service is a convenient and clever way to reduce your carbon footprint!

St Barts ( St Barth, St Barthelemy ) is a very unique and special French Caribbean island, and getting there can be special as well. Just a short 15 minute flight from the international airport of Juliana on St Maarten. The fact that St Barts airport can only accommodate small aircraft and that incoming and outbound flights stop at sunset, maintains the island™s intimate and exclusive character. This also means that getting to and from St Barts is a particular experience, which can be of concern to visitors as they must first fly into St Maarten and clear customs, immigration and security before boarding their St Barts flight. Delayed international flights into St Maarten can cause missed connecting flights to St Barts. The planes coming into St Barts are restricted in the number of passengers and in the weight they can carry. As such passengers, and more often their luggage, can spend the night on St Maarten. Local bad weather can also affect flight schedules from St Maarten to St Barts, causing backlogs in the check-in lines and again, passenger and luggage delays. Even with the opening of the new international airport ( Juliana ) on St Maarten last Nov 2006 the situation of missed connections and lost luggage has not changed. Itinerary: Venice Cruising Athens Mykonos Cruising Split Venice I flew with Ryanair from Shannon on Friday morning. I spent the day in Venice which is ideal really for people to spend the night there and the ship sails at 5pm the following day so plenty of time to see this amazing city. It is also great for people to spend a long weekend there as they fly every Friday morning and late flight Monday so you have four full days in this beautiful city. The transfer was 6 euro one way or 10 euro return which is valid for 1 week. It stops at the train station and the bus station, which is the one you need to get off on. From the bus station I got a water bus across to on of the railway stations and was only a few minutes walk from my hotel. Very easy to do and locate. I was on my own and found it very easy to make my way around with the water buses/taxis. They cost 14 euro for 12 hours and you can buy an open hop on hop off ticket for the amount of time you are spending in the city. It stops at all the major attractions, St Marks square, Rialto Bridge etc. I stayed at the 4* Amadeus Hotel which is very near the port. It was clean, Old Italian style and I would have no problem recommending it. I was situated at the back and heard nothing, but there were a few staying there and found it noisy at the front. So I would request a room at the back of the building. So to get to the port you go across to the bus station, walk or warterbus and a taxi (car!) to the port which should cost approx 10-12 euro. On the way back they charged 20! He was a hackney, not a taxi. There was a courtesy bus but we couldn™t find it. On the way back, there was a stop for the bus, which is supposed to arrive every 15 mins, we were there around half an hour and no sign. The ship itself is beautiful and has 11 decks It is smaller than most of the fleet, not have some of the features which may appeal to families such as the H2O zone water park, the ice rink, flow rider large 42nd street where they have street carnivals etc like freedom class ships. I stayed in large inside state room on deck 6 which was perfect. I didn™t feel claustrophobic, the stateroom attendant was fantastic. Every time you leave, she would tidy your room, fantastic service. You also receive a daily planer on your pillow every night to let you know what™s going on for the next day. Food wise there was the Windjammer caf?(c) which is the buffet style restaurant which we ate our breakfast and lunch in. Food was fantastic. So much variety and the choices are different every day. We ate our dinner in the King and I main dining room every evening on the 8.30 sitting. We had a head waiter, waiter and assistant waiter, the same every evening. They only have two tables to look after so service was impeccable. The food was amazing, and again a different menu every night. Also, there is 24 hour room service which is free! On other classes/ships you would have speciality dining options for a little extra cost such as Chops Grill, Italian food at the Portofino, Johnny Rockets and Jade for Asian style cuisine. On board you have great entertainment and a few bars to choose from. You have The Viking Lounge which was the nightclub that has 360 degree panoramic views, Schooner bar which hosted quiz nights and felt like an English style pub. Opposite the reception you had the Champagne bar which was very popular. We had two formal nights and everyone had complimentary champagne. The Casino Royale was very big and popular in the evenings. The kids are always entertained with the kiddies club Adventure Ocean with different age groups. There is an option for them to be there until 1am! Also babysitting is available for $8 an hour. The Spa, Ship Shape, did some great deals while the ship was docked, often getting two for one offers or discounted services. The Theatre had something on every night, such as songs from all the old movies, all cabaret style. There was a magician one night! They are constantly activities going on during the day and night for everyone. You have the rock climbing wall and mini golf outside where the outdoor pool and indoor pool (Solarium) were located also. The Solarium has a retractable roof but was closed the whole time we were there. It is nice and cool in there, they also have food such as pizza, burgers, sandwiches etc on offer when the Windjammer is closed. They also have ice sculpture demonstrations by the pool bar and dancing under the stars one of the evenings with a BBQ style buffet and canopies. Canopies are handed out during shows in the theatre also. So food 24 hour a day! I only did one excursion into Athens for $56 which to be honest, could have done it for a lot less. We got the bus from the ship to the Olympic Stadium, the Acropolis, and then onto Palak, the main shopping district of Athens for an hour and a half. From the port there are taxis which will bring you to Athens for approx 10-12 Euro, best to get dropped at the Palak area where there is a tourist train/tram, similar to those you see in a zoo! It only costs 6 euro per person and brings you to all the main sights. So if there were 4 of you, you could do it for less than a tenner! There was no need to do an excursion in Mykonos, we did get the transfer for $8 into the town which is very handy. It was beautiful with little cobbled streets and little restaurants dotted everywhere. Quite expensive though. A lot of galleries and boutiques. Glancing at the menus, they were expensive also. Split is a lovely too, old buildings and great shopping, market place and little boutiques everywhere. Some shops take Euro and you get your change in Euro also, some will accept but only give Koruna in change. So really, out of this Itinerary you really don™t need to do any excursions. The ship is docked for the day so you can go back on deck to the pool if you have all your sight seeing done. You also go through Venice on the ship which was fantastic. I loved this itinerary for that reason, so it is very relaxing and a great way to see the world. Everything is in dollars so at the moment is fantastic value. There is an ATM on board but is supposed to be very expensive to use. I converted Dollars in Venice to put on my sea pass card, which is what you use throughout the cruiser. Even if you go over what you originally put in, you can pay the balance at the end. You had to leave your bag out the night before, the latest midnight and your tag is colour coded and called over the intercom in the morning. Very efficient. This cruise and ship has something for everyone. The age group on board was very mixed, from groups of friends in their 20™s, families, singles, and couples of all ages. A great mix. I did hear from one of the staff that they couldn™t believe how young the age group was, and that normally on the Splendour is older. So hopefully everyone will enjoy their experience no matter what age you are. I think this ship being smaller it is more intimate. It was fully booked so we couldn™t see any cabins, so there were approximately 1,900 on board. So you see the same faces every day, as opposed to one of the bigger vessels. One thing was the pool was very small, so kids were constantly jumping in and running around the pool, so the H2O Zone would be fantastic for kids. All in all I couldn™t really fault the Royal Caribbean, fantastic service and staff, great itinerary and excellent food.

Taxis are especially expensive, so should be avoided unless you can split the cost 3 or 4 ways. When going to clubs, try to get yourself on the guest list. Using the internet, it is free and easy to put yourself on the guest list at many different clubs in Buenos Aires, which saves you from having to wait in line, and the entrance fee is either discounted, or you enter for free. If you can’t get on the list, try going early. Many clubs offer discounts for people who arrive early. Furthermore, if you are a big drinker, try drinking before going out, or don’t drink much at all. Drinks are incredibly expensive in most bars and clubs, so even drinking two or three can put a huge dent in your wallet. This is a list of the best ways you can save money while living or visiting Buenos Aires. Remember that every little bit that you save will give you the opportunity to do more things during your stay, therefore taking advantage of everything that Buenos Aires has to offer.

I soon came face to face with a challenging question. How did my identity become so obscure that I lost track of my hopes and dreams? Believing that I did not have any time left in my hectic schedule to accomplish my goals, I slowly began to lose perspective of whom and what I was about. My life became filled with doctor’s appointments, therapy sessions, counseling, grocery shopping, laundry, house cleaning, dance classes and swimming lessons. I anticipated my various new roles but they were not quite the way I imagined them. Adopting four children seemed like a really noble idea but the reality was that its profound vertigo-like existence of seemingly insurmountable ordeals, trials and triumphs followed by more trials was very challenging for me. Its intense effect led to my struggling with the choices I had made in life. First I chose to marry my husband, who I knew would be transferred from the city where we lived at the time of our marriage. This meant giving up a job that I loved, and that family and friends would now be two thousand miles away. This marked the beginning of my abandoning many of my aspirations and dreams without any insight into all the other wonderful things that would emerge as a direct result of that. Outwardly I expressed the joy of being a newlywed; inwardly I mourned the loss of my friends and colleagues and then quietly expressed my thoughts through poetic writings. Two years after marriage, my first child was born and this was a joyous time for both Bill and I. Remembering his own childhood and having been raised like an only child, Bill did not want to inflict the same ordeal on his child. He was the last of three children, born eight years after a sister that preceded him. He brought up the topic of adoption when our son was five months old. We had discussed adopting prior to marriage, so when our son Trey was ten months old, we started our state-mandated parenting class. It was at these classes that I first viewed the photos of our four beautiful daughters. The children’s photos were in pairs of two, so naturally I thought it was a family of two. Upon inquiring about the two children, I was told it was a sibling group of four. I certainly was not interested in adopting four children, but I could not shake their precious little images from my mind. On occasions I would inquire about the progress of finding a home for the children. The answer was always the same: Most people were interested in one child maybe two but not four. After months of prayer and soul searching William and I decided to bring them home. After our daughters came home, life was far from what I imagined it would be. My beautiful daughters had some struggles of their own. Moving from the house they had come to know as home was very traumatic for them. They were not equipped with any training or experiences to make the transition easier. With limited self-expression the older children acted out their fears and frustration by throwing temper tantrums and bullying their younger siblings. For the most part our household was in constant commotion. I became very focused on wanting to makes things better. Pretty soon I took on their issues as my own. There were numerous difficulties, from struggling to adjust to a new home, to dealing with abuse from their past, to learning difficulties. Through it all I learned to love them and took measures to make life better for them. Simultaneously, I bemoaned the fact that they were not the perfect children I dreamed of parenting and to add to my already precarious situation, I became pregnant with our sixth child. I gave birth to that child soon after we consummated our adoption. I now had six children ages zero to five years, after four years of marriage. Time to do the things I loved was now non-existent. I was compelled to eliminate all other activities that were outside of home life. This, however, had a profound impact on me. I slowly became conflicted. Having to meet the needs of my household was overwhelming; yet I had to do it, convinced that if I faltered it would mean that I failed my children. I held firmly onto my preconceive idea that if I give them my all there would be a miraculous improvement. Instead I became frustrated, then discouraged and resentful. No longer tactfully problem solving, I began to focus on all the things I wanted to do and no longer had the time to do. I stopped taking pride in my accomplishments, even though I had made great progress with my children. Every negative encounter I had became magnified. I felt that they were a direct reflection of my community and their views of me and my family as a whole. Having lost focus of the things that were important, I no longer took pride in the things that a mother found fulfilling, like teaching my five older children how to read fluently by age five, despite some of their academic challenges. I was now finding it very difficult to help my youngest daughter with her reading. In the past, teaching my children was worth more to me than its weight in gold. Not wanting to give into the misconception that giving up my profession to become a homemaker had some how robbed me of myself, I started to reflect inwardly. Where did the vivacious, cheerful, fun-loving side of me go?  I loved my family! Could the inner struggles I was having be as a direct result of my choosing to dedicate all my time to them? I needed them as much as I needed the woman I was. They needed her too. Paging through my diary, hidden within the pages of the many poetic entries was my hopes, fears, my love for my children, lost love and dreams for the future of forgotten hurting children, all the things that made up the core of who I was. Then being the dreamer and risk taker that I was, I compiled my very personal thoughts and submitted them to a publisher in the form of a book called Fantasy/Controversy or My Reality. Having taken this fascinating journey through my struggles, I now had a new understanding of some of the challenges that mothers of large families, adopted and foster families have. These struggles which sometimes included giving up social events, having a full calendar of appointments, and frequently having to carry all the children grocery shopping, were very humbling for me. While it thought me to become more reliant on my creator it also changed my dreams and goals, for they now incorporate other foster and adopted families. I know who I am. I also know the value of having others around to help and offer support. I also know the importance of taking time to replenish myself. For many adopted mothers, this is currently not apart of their lives, but I would very much like for it to be, even if it comes in the form of post-adoption services.  I dedicated my poetry book to hurting children everywhere so as to hold unto this dream of making a difference in the lives of hurting children. I hope to accomplish this by donating a part of my royalties to agencies that provide services to adoption and foster families. Life-altering circumstances changed the direction of my life and momentarily robbed me of its joy. If one person can benefit from it, then living through it is worth it. It was my struggling, loving and advocating for my children that has rewarded me. I am now mindful of the things that are most important, for I have been blessed in ways I never thought I would be. It’s been just over two years since 36-year-old Scott Brandon became a paraplegic. After going through all the natural adjustments and emotions such a life-changing experience brings, he has neither the time nor inclination to wallow in self-pity. He’s too busy being a single father to two sons, working as general manager of sales and marketing for an adaptive mobility company, speaking at schools, and playing goaltender for the U.S. sled hockey national team. Brandon’s life changed on September 10, 2002. He was on a ladder trimming a tree when he fell 15 feet to the driveway, landing flat on his back. The fall caused burst fractures in several vertebrae, resulting in paraplegia. In the months of recovery and rehabilitation that followed, Brandon realized giving up wasn’t an option; his two boys, 11-year-old Scott and six-year-old Trevor, depended on him. “If I couldn’t find the strength within myself to recover, I knew I must do it for them,” Brandon recalls. “They needed their father back to as close to normal as possible, and quick.” Following the accident, Brandon, a native of St. Louis, was sent to DePaul Hospital, where neurosurgeon Dr. Danial Scodary implanted titanium rods in his spine. He was then transferred to St. Johns Mercy for more surgery and rehabilitation. After a month of rehab, Brandon underwent five more months of out-patient therapy three times a week. He has developed a close relationship with his doctors, particularly Scodary. “I owe a lot to him,” Brandon says. “He has been a godsend to myself and my family.” Less than a month after his injury, Brandon, who had played roller blade hockey for years, was introduced to sled hockey by his physical therapist, Kathy Griffith. Invented at a rehabilitation center in Sweden in the 1960’s, sled hockey became a Paralympic sport in the 1994 Winter Games in Lillehammer. Players sit in specially designed sleds placed on top of two hockey skate blades, and the puck must be passed underneath the sled. After watching the U.S. Paralympic team play a game, Brandon met several of the players, and was deeply moved by the experience. “It was there that I created a new cast of heroes,” he says. “Here was a bunch of guys that have all overcome horrible injuries of their own, and went on to play for their country and win a gold medal in Salt Lake City at the 2002 Paralympics.” Once he was cleared by his doctors, Brandon played one season for a team called the RIC Blackhawks before being invited to the U.S. Team tryouts this past August in Colorado Springs. After five days of tryouts, he made the team as a goaltender. But other challenges lay ahead. When Brandon discovered that his boys were being ridiculed at school because of his wheelchair, he realized how important it was to show others that disabled people could lead productive lives. He began speaking at grade schools, demonstrating how he uses his wheelchair to go up and down stairs, play sports, and do many of the things everyone else does, with some modifications. He shows kids his Ford pickup equipped with a special seat, wheelchair lift, and remote control power topper. Brandon is amazed at how much of a difference these brief encounters can make in changing the way kids think about people in wheelchairs. “Their first reaction is that they are a little unsure, only because they just don’t know we are typically normal people who have suffered injuries,” he explains. “They have no idea we were just like their moms and dads before. But after an hour of questions and answers, and discussing all of the great things we can still do, they offer to push me, open doors, carry my things to the truck, anything to be involved.” Kids aren’t the only ones affected by Brandon’s courage and positive outlook. His friends and family have been with him every step of the way the past two years, and are proud of what he has overcome. His mother, Carol Halloran Ferguson, isn’t at all surprised at her son’s resolve. “It never occured to him to set limits. He never has,” she says. “Scott still has that twinkle in his eye and the good nature and easy grin. “He is still a loving father, son, brother and friend, facing the same daily struggles and joys as every other person.” Brandon hopes to lead his sled hockey team to a gold medal at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Torino, Italy, and to find that special someone to share his struggles and triumphs with. His biggest goal, though, is to be the kind of dad his sons can look up to and be proud of. In the beginning, the air taxi services were not well organized like the private jets of the day. Mostly single ownership proprietary aircrafts were run as air taxis. There were many disadvantages as ~frequent flyers’ soon found out. The safety of the flight depended entirely on the Pilot’s skill. No special safety precautions were taken, and as a result there were accidents. Lives were lost; in fact, the passengers flew at their own risk until the Government stepped in and formulated certain rules and regulations which would cover the flights; insurance was made mandatory. The pilots were to be certified by the Federal agency as competent. Aviation was serious business. There were many companies building airplanes; some of the popular ones were Cessna, Beech-craft, De-Havilland, Douglas, to name a few. Four and Six seater aircraft were the most popular for hauling passengers as well as cargo and mail. Almost all the cities were connected by air-taxis. In 1936, the Douglas Aircraft Company of USA designed and built a twin-engine passenger aircraft known as the DC-3 (popularly known as the DAKOTA) capable of carrying up to 32 passengers. This was the most famous airliner of all time and considered the safest ever built. More than 20,000 of these aircrafts were built both for military and civil use, and were used in nearly every country in the world. Even as late as 1971, about a thousand of them were in use by the military and 600 were in use in different countries around the world. Private hire vehicles are not the same as taxis and therefore will need a specific type of insurance. Drivers who have accumulated a no claims discount or bonus over a number of years will be offered the largest savings. * Insuring the vehicle as Third Party only is another way to lower premiums, however this basic insurance does not provide cover for your vehicle if you are deemed to be the person who caused the accident. Third Party gives you exactly as it says, cover for a third party and nothing more. * If you operate in a high risk area, such as large cities or towns insurance companies may not offer Third Party only cover. When Vaclav Havel was asked what the immediate effects of the collapse of communism were on the Czech republic, he said “Expensive hotels and cheap whores”. The president might as well have added cheating cabbies to the list. For more than a decade Prague’s taxi drivers have been taking advantage of the lack of consumer protection laws and police indifference to overcharge their passengers, sometimes by as much as 2,000%. The rogue drivers have a reputation for threatening or physically attacking those who challenge their fares. Now in a bold attempt to clean up the corruption in eastern Europe’s most visited capital - particularly as membership of the European Union looms - Prague city hall has begun a campaign to stop the deceitful drivers. Students are being hired to impersonate tourists in an attempt to flush out the con artists - an estimated 60% of the 4,500 registered and 2,000 unregistered drivers. Of more than 1,000 drivers inspected at random since the scheme began earlier this summer, almost 600 were found to be overcharging and reported to the police. They are liable to fines of up to 1m crowns (?21,000) and the removal of their licences. The chief executive of the municipal authority, Zdenek Zajicek, described the operation as an “unofficial war on cheats”. Talk of war is no exaggeration. Mr Zajicek has received death threats for his stance and is under 24-hour police protection. “In a strange way I take comfort from this,” he said. “The fact they’re reacting is proof that our methods are really working.” The inspectors too face physical threats. “One taxi driver drove across the leg of a policeman in his attempts to get away,” said David Gladis, the public relations officer coordinating the scheme. “Two inspectors were hijacked by their driver, who locked them in the car.” The struggle is an uphill one. The drivers defend their overcharging, saying that the 22 crown (50p) a kilometre charge laid down in law does not allow them to make a living. Many are involved in mafia activities, doubling up as drug dealers. Poorly-paid police officers either take bribes or turn a blind eye. The drivers are a powerful force in Prague. In the late nineties rival groups of drivers fought a fierce turf war to govern the city’s most profitable taxi ranks. Several people were murdered.

Travelling to Rome, especially from the UK is so easy these days that anyone, on almost any budget, can spend a few days or a few weeks experiencing 2000 years of history and culture. Thanks to La Citta Eterna (The Eternal City) of Rome is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, full of diversity with something for everyone. My favourite part of Rome is Piazza Navona. In the day this square is packed tightly with some of the world’s most beautiful modern independent and armature art. Grab yourself a bargain with an oil paint original, (they could be the future Botticelli or Del Drago), squash your family onto a folding chair for a group caricature or simply slow down your pace and get lost in the art, wandering from stand to stand and flicking your way through the racks. Almost all of the artists/sellers speak even a small amount of English and many are willing to barter regarding prices, however if a price is set, (e.g.: caricatures are usually 10-20EUR and prices are generally on signs next to the artist’ stand), these are generally non-negotiable. At night, Piazza Navona becomes a Roman HOT SPOT for dining and Socialising. As the sky darks, the lights of the fountains shine and the restaurants and bars, lining the square, fill with the sound of violins, accordions and romantic Italian love songs. Piazza Navona is also the home of the Brazilian-Italian Embassy and occasionally you will here the sound of Brazilian World music escaping through the high windows into the hustle and bustle below. Piazza Navona IS busy at night; with a mixture of evening tourists passing through to visit the fountains on there way to the next tourist attraction, and the restaurants which are always full; but the busyness is part of the attraction. There are also some fantastic restaurants very close by to Piazza Navona only one street away, containing some of the best food I have tasted in Rome and they are generally less busy and much less expensive than those located directly inside the Piazza. These restaurants are also often popular with the locals, (always a good sign that the food is quality). Most of the restaurants speak a basic English, but, (as with any country abroad), are always grateful, (and often more helpful), if you are polite and try to use even the most basic Italian words or phrases in your questions and answers. Below I have included some basic information about asking for things in Italian, regarding please and thank you. Of course there are hundreds if not thousands more restaurants in the centre of Rome, including plenty of other foreign foods: Chinese, Japanese & Sushi Bars, Irish Pubs, Kebab Bars and Other World Foods. Do not be afraid to try smaller restaurants located in side streets and don’t be afraid to take a walk around before choosing a restaurant. Eating out abroad can be VERY expensive and VERY cheap; you just have to be prepared to look around. Check out the menus outside the restaurants, (usually enlarged and pinned on a board), and compare the prices against others near by. Italian Food IS fantastic and the more authentic the restaurant the better. So find one you like, sit down with some house wine or a nice cold Peroni, enjoy a taste of Italy and bask in finding a PIAZZA OF YOUR-OWN-A. Some Things I have picked Up on My Travels. It is not entirely necessary to say please, “per favore”, in Italy. Instead Italian’s more frequently use Thank you, “Grazie”. For example: When asking for something in English we would generally end the sentence with “May I…please?” In Italian, it is more common for people to simply state “I would like…” Then when the seller/waiter (tress)/assistant responds “OK” or “Si” to confirm that they have understood you, then you will say “Thank you”, repeating this again when you receive the item. In my experience, getting a “per favore” onto the end of your question, before the person has walked away is almost impossible; very rare. However, this is not because they are being ignorant, it is just not expected. Just make sure if you are not using Per Favore when asking things that you are polite and say Grazie at least combined with Ciao when you are leaving. I have included an example situation/conversation below, including VERY basic Italian. E.g.: YOU: Salve (hello) SHOP ASST: Salve. Prego (What do you want? OR how can I help you) YOU: Vorrei un gelato con Stracciatella? (I would like an ice-cream with Stracciatella (a flavour) SHOP ASST: Una coppa? (An ice-cream cup) YOU: Si. Grazie. (Yes. Thank you) SHOP ASST: OK. Due Euro. (Assistant hands you the cup of ice cream. “Two Euros”) YOU: Grazie. (You give them the money and thank them) SHOP ASST: Prego. Grazie. (You’re Welcome. Thank you.) YOU: (As you leave…) Grazie, Ciao. (Thank you. Bye.) SHOP: Grazie a Te. Ciao OR Buona Sera/ Giorno (Thank you to you. Bye OR Good Evening/Day.) From this short example you will also have noticed that “Prego” can mean several things. When you first enter a shop it usually means “I’m ready to take your order. / How can I help? / What do you want?” As a response to “Grazie (Thank you)” it means “You’re welcome”.

Global Positioning Systems (GPS) was originally developed by the US Armed Forces to help with naval and overland navigation. GPS uses a constellation of satellites to beam down encoded time signatures to receivers on the surface. School officials and parents have a peace of mind knowing that the school buses are monitored constantly. In April 2007, a private taxi company launched a fleet of 150 GPS-enabled metered taxis (or Meru taxis) in Mumbai, India. Customers will be able to call for a taxi at to pick up at a preferred location and book in advance on the phone or internet. If a customer accidentally left any personal item in a taxi, this GPS technology can track to the specific taxi quickly and easily. All collected Meru taxi fares are transmitted back to the control centre and monitored to ensure that customers are charged appropriately. The company plans to increase the fleet to 1,000 taxis by year end. In the commercial sector, GPS is used for tracking delivery trucks and trucks used by contractors going to job sites. This allows real time monitoring of what trucks are en route and better tracking of actual mileage used (versus what’s billed for). This also increases fleet wide fuel economy, and allows employers to check the actual hours driven by drivers in a day for mileage bonuses and “drive time” pay. H.A. Sun Heating and Cooling Inc. of Bloomfield, Mich. is an example of a company that installed GPS fleet tracking system in every of its truck. The company is able to access real time information that leads to savings in manpower costs (from people claiming they were on a shift for 8 hours, when the GPS showed that they’d only driven for seven and a half), reduced fuel costs and increased productivity and efficient truck routing. For this company, the GPS paid for itself in 30 days. GPS fleet tracking system has been proven to increase efficiency and productivity in all types of businesses that own fleet of vehicles. In addition to cost and time savings, customer satisfaction is significantly improved through better responsiveness.

It is raining travel portals in India and more and more Indian consumers are booking their flights, hotels and holidays online than ever before. There are about a dozen travel sites that are in fierce competition with one another to increase market share cashing on the huge consumer boom triggered by salary hikes and more disposable income of Indian middle class. As more choices are present before the Indian consumers it is becoming increasingly difficult for them to pick up the right one where they will not only get a good deal but good services as well. My personal experience is that most of these portals have very little price differentiation but the customer service, usability and transparency makes them different from one another. Regarding airfares I think cleartrip scores above the rest as they have a no nonsense intuitive interface and also give the real fare unlike makemytrip and others who try to hide the airport tax part till the last checkout page. So when you are comparing the fares don’t be lured by the low list prices because you have to shell out much more than what you see as fare. Another important advice is that unless you are very much sure about your itineraries look out for cancellation and modification charges which could take a toll on your budget. Cheap tickets always come with some inflexibility and there may be some cases where the journey date is not at all changeable. So read the fine print before committing as otherwise your good deal could turn out to be a costly affair. It is not only the charges that hurts but sometimes a poor customer service can give you a lot of pain specially when you try to make a last minute change. I experienced once such nightmare with makemytrip about 6 months back when their servers failed to send the e-ticket and I had to try for almost 2 hours to get to speak to a customer service representative to get my PNR number. I have left makemytrip since then and I am not sure whether their customer help desk have improved by this time but this could be a major area for worry for any customer who needs help. So do your own research if you are trying out a new travel portal for the first time and don’t just get swayed by advertisements. There are reviews in product review websites which are the best sources of unbiased information about service and overall experience and they are usually written by real customers. Blogs are also sources for such information which can actually provide insights about the deals or raw deals that a customer gets from the ever growing online travel booking business. For hotel prices I will tell you a trick that has worked for me many a times. I have always booked hotels and even 4 star and heritage hotels well below the lowest prices as published in these portals. What a smart consumer can do is get the reference price from the travel portals and then directly negotiate with the hotel for an even better price or some freebies (like free airport transfer) and I will tell you that it can save you up to 25%. Another common mistake that many travelers do is that they forget about the airlines that fly them and think only about the travel portals. Don’t forget to look into the airlines website especially if you are planning to take a low cost carrier. There is a chance that you can get a better deal there and then why not grab it. If you can afford to fly last minute chances are that you get killer deals directly from the airlines and so if you have the time don’t be in a hurry to book in advance. Instead wait for weekdays or weekend deals offered last moment and be ready to grab them as it comes. If you are flying main routes like Delhi Mumbai or Mumbai Calcutta chances are they you get discount prices in full service carriers in last minute as the airlines would be desperate to sell off the available seats. Lastly for flight and hotel deals airlines sites are a must visit as they regularly have good deals. Indian which may be not so fashionable like Jet or Kingfisher always have great pan India holiday deals thought out the seasons and many people don’t actually know about them. Nowadays budget airlines like Spice Jet are also offering flight and hotel deals but you need to compare with other offers before buying. So it is not only the portals that you offer you the best deal and there is no compelling reason to be loyal to only one portal. Spend some time on research and pick up the best deal whoever offers it to you. But don’t fall into the cash back trap which is offered by most portals with some credit card or the other. Take them only when you are sure that you can pay off the full bill as otherwise you will end up paying more in interest than what you save. As the portals themselves are finding it hard to strike good deals with airlines and hotels the cash back is the only easy option for them to make their prices appear attractive to consumers.

NY Hack License and Requirements Careers Articles | March 8, 2008 To drive a yellow cab in New York City, you must have the NY hack license issued by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. Here are requirements for getting the taxi drivers license in NYC. A NY hack license is the license needed to drive a New York City taxi. Officially, the NY hack license is called a New York City taxi operators license and it is issued by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. This license is good for driving in all five boroughs in New York City and having it allows the driver to operate a yellow medallion taxi cab. In New York City, only a yellow medallion taxi cab is allowed to pick up passengers on the street. To operate a taxi, you must possess a taxi drivers license. You must apply for this license through the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. The licenses issued through this agency for car service or limousines do not cover the operation of a yellow cab. On the other hand, having the hack license allows the holder to operate a car service or limousine. Because of this, the NY hack license is the most prestigious and valuable of all the operator licenses issued by the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission. Anyone interested in applying for this taxi drivers license may want to know what the requirements are. In order to apply for a NY hack license, you must be at least nineteen years old and possess a New York State drivers license that is either a Class A, B, C or E. You can also apply if you have a comparable drivers license from the states of Connecticut, Pennsylvania or New Jersey. Most New York State driver licenses are Class D. To upgrade from a Class D to a Class E, you will need to go to the Department of Motor Vehicles and pay an upgrade fee. There are no tests involved but you must be prepared to pay about fifty dollars for the fee. If you are really interested in getting a NY hack license, make sure you have no unpaid parking tickets or traffic summons. If you owe NYC fees for parking or traffic violations, you must either have paid them or you must have a documented settlement agreement with whatever department is responsible. This proof must be submitted to the NYC Taxi and Limousine Commission with your application. Another requirement is that you must be a citizen or a legal resident of the United States. All applicants for the NY hack license must attend a state certified six-hour defensive driving course. The course must have been completed no longer than six months before the date on your application. If you need to take this class, a popular source is the American Master Cabbie Taxi Academy. They hold classes six days a week. You can even register for the class online but you must attend the class in person. Besides the training and status requirements, you must meet a medical requirement. The medical form is titled Form B and is part of the taxi drivers application. This form must be completed by a licensed physician. You must submit your application for a NY hack license in person at the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission, which is located at 32-02 Queens Blvd, Long Island City. By Linda Orlando New Yorkers may feel that The Metropolitan Transportation Authority was the target of a domestic terrorism attack this morning when they walked out of their homes to head to work and discovered that the subways and buses in the city weren’t rolling. Transit workers walked off the job Tuesday morning because their demands hadn’t been met by the city during several days of particularly vile and angry labor talks. According to Roger Toussaint, the union president, workers “are tired of being underappreciated and disrespected.” So they decided they would disrespect the city they serve, by attempting to bring it to its knees just a few days before Christmas. Mayor Michael Bloomberg calls the strike “cowardly,” and immediately put an emergency plan into effect to alleviate the gridlock caused by the strike. He added that a strike by transit workers during the busiest time of the year is “illegal and morally reprehensible.” More than 7 million people ride the subways and buses every day during a regular week in New York City, but that number is greatly increased this time of year. The walkout could cost the city as much as $400 million a day, and will cause untold repercussions for businesses at the height of the shopping and tourist season. There hasn’t been a citywide transit strike in New York City in more than 25 years. Because it is illegal for mass transit workers to strike in New York, the bus and subway employees who are striking?over 33,000 employees?will face huge fines for participating. Peter Kalikow, the head of the MTA, calls the strike “a slap in the face” to all New Yorkers. State lawyers are headed to court today to block the walkout, which was called by the union just three hours after a midnight deadline. Toussaint said the proposed new contract with the MTA should have been a “no-brainer,” and the union feels the strike is justified. Bloomberg is urging New Yorkers to make arrangements to carpool, walk, or ride bikes to work, or work at home if possible. Meanwhile, New York yellow taxis are attempting to help ease the congestion on city streets by taking up to four passengers at a time. Many people are having trouble understanding the new pricing structure for taxis implemented by Bloomberg, with the city divided into zones. Manhattan has been divided into four zones, with a $10 fare per person for travel within a single zone and an additional $5 for traveling into another zone. The confusion hasn’t impeded the demand for taxis this morning, though. A line of yellow cabs circles the block outside Penn Station, with drivers and hopeful passengers screaming out locations, hoping to match up with other people heading to the same locations so they can share rides. One subway booth in New York City has a sign posted saying, “Strike in Effect. Station Closed. Happy Holidays.” Obviously city transit workers aren’t interested in peace and goodwill to all men. No matter how angry they are about the impasse with the MTA, it’s a sad day indeed when they let their acrimony ruin the holidays for the millions of people who are responsible for them having jobs in the first place.

Further, the permissible area for plots, commercial and commercial facilities is said to be 65% of the total area as per population norms permitted in the master plan of 2021, with the rest to be according to building regulations. It’s Wednesday night, sitting at home, watching some quality premium cable. I know it’s premium because it costs me a lot more money than CNN. A glance at the schedule tells me one of the greatest shows in TV history, cable or otherwise, is on in a few. The Larry Sanders Show. I flip around to kill a little time, and stumble across the polar opposite of cable’s greatest triumph. “Arliss”. Ugh. By nature I hate vanity projects. In “Forget Paris” Billy Crystal plays a NBA referee. What an amazing coincidence! I hear he likes basketball. His next movie is about Mickey Mantle, who through another masterstroke, was one of Billy’s idols. I’d look for it soon on a 3 o’clock flight to Boston. Crystal is not alone on this, he just happens to be more obvious about it. Actors have fawned over athletes since the wax cylinder. Athletes share a similar interest in acting or how else could we have seen the gift that Shaquille brings to the screen? In most cases, it’s a blip. A guest shot on a show, or courtside seats at a Knicks game. The public usually doesn’t have to endure it for years on end. If “Arliss” were on broadcast TV, it would have been gone by the third commercial, but cable has a way of coddling it’s ugly stepchildren. I think in some leather-covered executive’s office, he sees great promise in a series about a smarmy agent and his wacky office staff. Or he sees free tickets from the numerous “Guest Athletes.” Robert Wuhl is a confessed sports junkie, and I’m sure any junkie would love to sit down with Dan Marino and chew the fat. I’d love to hear what is going on in Mike Modano’s head going down the ice. Actually I wouldn’t. I hate hockey. You get the point. The series itself has worn thinner each year. I checked it out the first couple of years, and marveled at how little it takes to fill a half-hour. You get a borderline sports star, itching for a SAG card, you make up a little story about him and his sport, and you swear a lot. It is after all cable. In one episode, a home run hitter is inching toward his 500th homer, and the race is on by Arliss and his crew to milk it for all it’s worth. Because he’s an agent, get it? Well, not to spoil it for you, but in the end a bullpen coach catches it and wants a whole mess of money because he doesn’t get paid as much as the slugger. See, that was a half-hour! While the stories themselves are barely above public access, what make it all the more frightening are the athletes. Their agents want to get them on the show to flex their acting muscle and show the world that Gary Carter* isn’t the only ex-athlete to make his mark in film. More often than not, you get to see that as an actor, Grant Hill is an excellent shooting guard. Roger Clemens showed us his performance in “Kingpin” wasn’t a fluke. Don’t ever ask about Juwan Howard. At some point, someone should stop this. In the closing moments of the episode before “Larry Sanders”, Arliss sent his star pitcher to a hypnotist who forces his patients to…ummm…gratify him without their knowledge. See, he did it to win a bet, and the only way to win the bet was to have the pitcher see his hypnotist. Arliss knew it meant that the pitcher would go through this, but he had to win back his favorite wooden leg. The pitcher threw a perfect game. Boy, if he only knew. Because he had to…with the hypnosis guy…and…the wooden leg. It took back-to-back Larry Sanders to make me forgive HBO for that. *1996-The Last Home Run—Look it up.

As Malaga strives towards being the European City of Culture for 2016 and the seat of communication and economic growth for the south of Spain, substantial investment has been ploughed into developing the region?s infrastructure. A serious overhaul of the transportation network has included construction of a brand new terminal and runway at Malaga Airport, due to be finished in 2010, and the massive expansion of Malaga Maria Zambrano Train Station which now boasts the Vialia Shopping and Leisure Centre, a 4 star hotel and an increase in train lines from 5 to 8. Completed in 2006, this has enabled the station to go from purely providing local routes to high speed AVE links to major cities such as Barcelona, Madrid and Seville, a huge coo for Malaga. The new station is a bright, airy composition and is filled with almost every modern convenience. The lay out is simple and effective. Those travelling into the station by train are first greeted by a newsagents and a cafeteria as they disembark. Once through the exit doors there is a luggage scanner on the left for people boarding the trains and on the right there is a Unicaja cashpoint, lockers to store luggage and phones. Beyond this is a passage lined with the four Malaga train station car hire firms, which are Avis, Europcar, Hertz and National Atessa. At the end of this walkway lies the entrance to the Barcelo Malaga Hotel and Convention Centre. The four star hotel has a fresh, contemporary design with 222 rooms, free Internet, fabulous breakfast buffet, clean, comfortable rooms and even a slide which runs from the 1st floor to the ground floor. Staying here is ideal for exploring Malaga as taxis and buses are located in front of the main exit and the trains are always on hand to take you off on daytrips to locations further afield. This steel, concrete and glass structure forms a semi-circular loop to the right of the station as it appears coming through the doors from the main entrance. The ground floor hosts all the most popular shops from Zara and Zara Home to Massimo Dutti, Accessorize, Bodyshop and Berksha with a cafeteria El Yate offering a place to indulge in cakes, sandwiches and a restorative cup of tea. While these stores mainly sell clothes, cosmetics and home decoration, there are also an opticians, travel agents, mobile phone and computer game shop. Upstairs on the 1st floor is where the entertainment is centred with a 13 screen Yelmo cinema, a 3,000 m2 professional bowling alley and a plethora of restaurants and fast food establishments including McDonald?s, Foster Hollywood and Haagen Dazs, as well as more traditional Spanish fare in the form of La Taberna del Sur. Arriving via the main entrance there are 12 tickets desks and 2 information desks to the left, plus automatic check-in kiosks where passengers can print off tickets by putting in their booking reference number. It also allows people to make changes to bookings they have made online. The local trains are the Cercan?as Renfe split into the C2 trains which go towards Fuengirola and the C1 trains which head to downtown Malaga, taking in Malaga Pablo Picasso Airport just four stops from Maria Zambrano. These trains depart from the left hand platforms past the ticket barriers and the journey to the airport takes approximately 15 minutes at a cost of 1.25 euros single. However this means of airport transfer is ill-advised if travelling with a lot of luggage or with mobility issues, as it is located an arduous 10 minute walk from the terminal. To get to the station from the airport turn right out of the Malaga Airport departures hall, walk along the pavement following the signs, cross the road, pass through the car park and out the other side. Here there is a footbridge which takes you over the main road into the airport and down some steep stairs to the station. Be sure to check which train you are getting on because there is only one platform. Either check the destination written on the front or remember that trains coming from the left are going to Fuengirola, while those coming into the station from the right are heading to Malaga. If you are fit and agile and without much baggage it won?t be a problem, otherwise it is better to get the bus as even the steps on to the train itself are steep and small. The Malaga Airport buses which take you to Maria Zambrano Station are located outside the Malaga Airport arrivals hall, 50 metres down on the right after exiting. The number 19 bus runs roughly every half an hour to the main bus station in Malaga, located just round the corner from the train station, at a fare of 1.10 euros for a single ticket. Originally the journey would have taken 20 minutes but now because of the prolific road works with the new metro installation, it takes around half an hour. Once off the bus, walk down the road past the main entrance for the buses and cross over the road. Turn left and just a little way up on the right will be the side entrance to the Vialia Shopping Centre. Bus services go several times a day to Granada, Nerja, Marbella and Torremolinos, to name a few and to places further afield such as Algcerias, Alhaurin and Madrid. When returning from the bus station to the airport the stop is situated behind Bay 30, which is at the end of the central walkway and is specially designated only for airport buses. Be careful with high heels on this walkway as it is heavily polished marble and can be slippery. Maria Zambrano Train Station is open between 06.15 and 00.45 and if you have organised a car hire at Malaga Airport, there is parking in front for 1,500 vehicles. Of those spaces, 1,250 are underground and 250 are on ground level. Charges are ?0.026 per minute for the first half hour and ?0.025 there after with a maximum fee of ?18 for the whole day. Visitors travelling by long distant or high speed train on Preferential, First and Club Class get 24 hours free parking per ticket, so for a return ticket to Madrid for example it is 48 hours free parking. To reach the train station by car drive onto Avenida de Andalucia, take a right at the El Corte Ingles roundabout, carry on straight until you reach a roundabout with the Eroski shopping centre and then turn left onto the Calle de la Explanada de la Estaci?n. The station will come into a view a few minutes later on the right. It is just a two minute walk from the older Larios Shopping Centre. If you are one of the many millions of Brits expected to fly out on holiday to the Costa del Sol this year, there is a good chance you’ll be jetting into Malaga Airport. As Spain’s 4th busiest airport, Malaga Pablo Picasso Airport sees approximately 13 million passengers through its gates each year, which results in the 2 terminals (soon to be 3) getting a little chaotic especially around peak season. With this in mind, it pays dividends to know in advance exactly where everything is. So once the luggage has been collected, the main priority for most people is getting out of the airport and to accommodation as quickly as possible so the fun can start. This more often means finding the right car hire at Malaga Airport. Whether due to impatient kids, size-able baggage or the unfamiliar temperatures, trying to grapple with confusing airport signage and wade through golfers, foreign students, hen parties, as well as regular holiday-makers, can prove a trying way to start a holiday, unless forearmed with the right knowledge. Our Idiot’s Guide can ensure you move like a heat seeking missile through the swathes of people, reach your target desk and be out of there before you’ve even had a chance to break a sweat. There are currently 23 Malaga Airport car hire firms in total but only 10 of these are based directly inside the Terminal 2 building itself. Access to these offices is just through the doors after baggage reclaim but before going through the final doors to the Malaga Airport Arrivals hall. Most pick-up cars are parked between two floors with Auriga Crown, Europcar, National Atesa, Record, Solmar and Sixt on the Ground Floor and Autos Lido, Avis, Goldcar, Hertz, and both National Atesa and Record represented again on Level -1. To return a vehicle, there is a special entrance for rental cars which is just past the regular P1 and P2 parking entrance bays. There is no ticket to collect when entering and passengers do not have to return the keys to the original terminal-based office as there is a corresponding office for each company on one of the three floors. Sixt is the only one that has 2 offices and these are on the ground floor and Level -2. Autos Lido, Avis, Goldcar, Hertz and Record all have their offices on Level -1, while Auriga Crown, Europcar, National Atesa, Sixt and Solmar?s are situated on Level -2. These offices are also for use by people renting a car but not flying from the airport. The much smaller Terminal 1 also has 5 car hire check-in desks which are on the left as you coming through into arrivals. They are Auriga Crown Malaga Airport, Autos Lido Malaga Airport, Europcar Malaga Airport, National Malaga Airport and Sixt Malaga Airport. Most of the off-airport rental firms are located on a slip road running adjacent to the approach road into the airport called Avenida Garcia Morato. These Malaga car hire companies are Cargest, First Car Group, Global, Helle Hollis, Holiday, Malagacar, National, Niza and Top rent-a-car. Getting to these is incredibly simple as each puts on a specially-dedicated courtesy bus that either schedules runs to and from the airport every 15 minutes or uses the flight details of the customers to turn up at the right time. These buses collect from just outside the arrivals terminal by the regular bus stop which is around 50 metres down on the right after exiting the building. When returning the vehicle, drivers are advised to go round the roundabout and come back on themselves to turn right into the slip road called Avenida Garcia Morato. The final four Malaga Airport car rental firms are located just over the roundabout, after the BP garage on the right hand side and are Autolink, Marbesol, Tony?s and Yellow Car. They are also reachable via a footbridge that runs over the road. To find the footbridge turn right out of the Malaga Airport departures hall and follow the signs for the train station, which will lead you a little further down before making you cross the road and go through the car park.
