Warid Restarts SMS Delivery Reports for Free

Warid customers reported last Wednesday that they have been receiving delivery reports for SMS messages, a feature that was previously switched-off. However, company didn’t confirm us then about the service or any of its associated charges.

But today, we have got this confirmation that Warid is restarting SMS delivery reports for it’s customers and that too for free (at least for now).

It won’t be out of place to mention that SMS delivery reports offer users an instant notification of the SMS message being delivered to the recipient, adding reliability and dependability in communication.

SMS delivery reports were once free for all operators. However, all of them stopped offering the service back in 2009 in order to balance the load on network.

You Can Now Chat with Your Google+ Circles in Gmail, Orkut

Google Talk has been around for quite a while. Most people saw it used in Gmail and it was added to Google+ as well. Even on the new social network, the chat widget has remained unchanged until now.

Google is making a subtle but very important change to the Google chat box, you can now talk to anyone in your Circles, not just the people you've added manually or had conversations with in Gmail.

"Google Chat makes it easy to chat with people you have relationships with. In Google+, you can chat with anyone in your Circles who also has added you to their Circles," Google explains.

"And, when you're not using Google Plus, you'll still be able to chat with them using Google products including, Gmail, the Google Talk client, iGoogle, Orkut and 3rd party apps," it adds.

It's an obvious move and one that should get a lot more people using the chat box in Google+. That said it's probably going to annoy at least some people that were already using the chat feature in Gmail and other places.

Google has been working on integrating Google+ in all of its products. Adding support for Circles in Google Talk is a logical step, maintaining two separate lists of friends/contacts doesn't really make sense, from Google's point of view.

With the new chat feature, you can talk to anyone on Google+ that you have in your circles and that has added you to theirs. Of course, existing contacts will also be available, even if they're not on Google+ and will sit on top of the friends list.

In fact, most Google+ friends won't show up in the chat list unless you've already chatted with them recently. You can look them up in the search box though.

Motorola Mobility has just announced that its latest Android flagship, the Motorola RAZR is now available in Saudi Arabia.

Customers who want to purchase the smartphone can do so for no less than SR 2,499 (US$ 665 or 500 EUR) via STC and Jarir bookstores.

Although the phone is delivered with Android 2.3 Gingerbread on board, the new and improved RAZR family device has been recently confirmed for an Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade in early 2012.

Facebook Finds That People Are Only 4 Degrees Apart

Facebook scientists, yes there exists such a thing, teamed up with fellow scientists over at the Università degli Studi di Milano to find out just how close two random people on Facebook were, i.e. how many degrees of separation there are between them.

It is an accepted fact, based on some older research, that two human beings are only six degrees apart, it only takes five people to reach one another solely through their friends and friends of friends.

The idea comes from the famous "small world experiment" from the 1960s. Facebook set out to find out whether, in the highly connected and networked world of today, that still holds true.

Earlier this year, Facebook took its entire pool of active users, 721 million of them at the time, and processed all of the friendship relations between them, 69 billion connections in total.

"First, we measured how many friends people have, and found that this distribution differs significantly from previous studies of large-scale social networks," Facebook wrote.

"Second, we found that the degrees of separation between any two Facebook users is smaller than the commonly cited six degrees, and has been shrinking over the past three years as Facebook has grown," it said.

"Finally, we observed that while the entire world is only a few degrees away, a user’s friends are most likely to be of a similar age and come from the same country," it added.

Of course, since all of the people in the study are Facebook users, they are only representative for their group, i.e. the average person is likely less 'connected' than the more than 10 percent of the human population Facebook looked at.

Facebook found out that the average user has about 100 friends. That is enough for 99.6 percent of all pairs of users to be separated by only six hops, five degrees.

92 percent were connected by four degrees, five hops. In fact, the number has been shrinking as Facebook grew larger. It says that the average was 5.28 hops in 2008 while it is now 4.74 hops.

What's more and hardly surprising, when limiting the connections to people in the same country, Facebook determined that the average two users were separated by only three degrees, four hops.

The results of this study are very important if only because it is the first time anyone has done anything approaching this scale. However, as Facebook notes, the results are not strictly comparable with previous studies for two main reasons.

First, as stated above, Facebook users are not representative for the average person on Earth. Second, Facebook had access to absolutely all connections and was able to calculate the shortest possible 'distance' between two people.

In the "small world experiment" people had to choose a friend who they believed would be more likely to be closer to the person they were trying to reach, which may not have always been correct.

Awareness Seminar: Educating Ufone’s Employees on The Dangers of Breast Cancer

Ufone recently arranged a seminar for its female employees highlighting the alarming increase in the rate of breast cancer patients in Pakistan. The seminar was conducted in collaboration with Pink Ribbon Pakistan and underlined the importance to significantly reduce breast cancer mortality in the country by creating widespread awareness on early detection and increased access to treatment.

Pink Ribbon Campaign Pakistan is a project of Women Empowerment Group (WEG). The Campaign aims at imparting awareness about the high danger of breast cancer in Pakistani women. Pakistan has the highest rate of Breast Cancer amongst all Asian countries and the numbers are alarming as every 9th woman in Pakistan is at high risk of getting Breast Cancer at some point in her life, leading to over 40,000 deaths every year.

Ufone, being a socially responsible organization continues to be at the forefront of many health initiatives. Since inception Ufone has taken serious interest in in-house and external CSR projects and over the last few years, has carried out various initiatives related to health care and environmental sustainability. These initiatives have benefited the populace as well as the employees of Ufone simultaneously.

Windows Phone 7.5 Now Arriving on Samsung Focus at AT&T

Microsoft is finally making the last Windows Phone 7.5 bits available for its users, and those who own a Samsung Focus 1.4 handset at AT&T are the lucky people to receive the update now.

The journey isn't over yet, as there still are some devices set to receive the update at a later date, such as the Samsung Omnia 7 on the airwaves of Telefonica in Spain, though it should not be too long before it receives the update as well.

According to Microsoft, they have already concluded the testing of this software, and the deployment should start soon.

In addition to this roll-out, Microsoft kicked off the delivery of a special update for some handsets based on Windows Phone.

“We’re also sending out another wave of firmware updates from our manufacturers to select Windows Phone models,” Eric Hautala, GM, Customer Experience Engineering, notes in a recent blog post.

“As I’ve mentioned before, these updates improve the overall function of your particular make and model of Windows Phone.

“You’ll see these firmware updates from time to time; they’re easy to recognize because the update information in the Zune software shows your device name. If you get one, I encourage you to install it.”

Moreover, the company is gearing up for the release of a new software update for some handsets in Europe in order to fix some issues that have been reported with voice mail notifications and with Exchange Server 2003.

The new Windows Phone software update will be pushed out as build 7740 and is meant to fix the said issues that appeared in some European and Asian networks under specific conditions. The update will arrive on devices on Vodafone, Orange, and Deutsche Telekom in Europe, Eric Hautala continues.

“This service release is being assessed by other mobile operators,” he explains.

Nokia N9 to Get Bigger Fonts Soon via Software Update

Finnish mobile phone maker Nokia is gearing up for the release of a new software update for its high-end Nokia N9 smartphone that was launched only recently with the MeeGo OS on board, and plans on making some changes to the fonts on the mobile phone.

At the moment, Nokia N9 users the default font “Nokia Pure Text,” but that will change in the future, and the move might affect a series of applications user interfaces.

Basically, the change will affect only the font metrics, but not the typeface of Nokia Pure Text as well.

“The most significant change is that by default, the text will take approximately 20% more space vertically, i.e. the height of the 'bounding box' of text items will increase,” a recent post on Nokia Developer explains.

“The current height of the font is actually a bit too small. E.g., some of the diacritic/accent marks or descenders do not fit to the bounding box. Fixing this is important especially for non-european languages using non-latin script.”

Depending on the manner in which the application has been built, the new change will impact it or not, Nokia notes. In most cases, applications built for the N9 should not be impacted by the change. Some examples include:

- Short text labels centered on top of other graphical items (like buttons)
- Lists and other pannable areas where the size anyway varies.
- By using margins and other buffer, you have anyway prepared for changes in the size of the text items e.g. for localization purposes.

However, when the layout directly depends on the height of the bounding box of the text items, things might become a bit complicated.

The company recommends the designing of the application UI so that the size of the text could vary both horizontally and vertically, something that should have been already implemented in the app when offering localizations for different languages.

Google Chrome Overtakes Firefox to Become the No. 2 Browser in the World

Google has finally done it, its Chrome browser is now the second most popular in the world, topped only by Internet Explorer. According to the latest StatCounter numbers, Chrome has just edged past Firefox, last week, taking the number two spot.

The most interesting part is that Chrome actually lost a bit of market share coming from the previous week; however, Firefox lost even more in that time.

In fact, the only major browser to add market share in the past week is Internet Explorer, in a reversal of a very old trend.

Google Chrome had a 25.47 percent share of the market, in the week ending November 13. Firefox on the other hand ended the week with just 25.32 percent.

Chrome had a 25.5 percent market share in the week before that, while Firefox had 25.79 percent.

But both browsers lost market share in the last week, mostly to Internet Explorer which saw an uptick in usage. IE went from 40.32 percent market share in the first week of November to 40.78 percent in the following week.

At this point, Chrome and Firefox are too close, so things may change, Firefox may regain the second spot, if only temporarily.

However, the broader trends, as seen in Statcounter data, but also discovered by other players keeping an eye on the web browser market, shows Firefox slowly declining or stagnating, while Google Chrome keeps on growing.

While things may fluctuate from one week to the other for a while, Google Chrome will eventually overtake Firefox by a safe enough margin, in a matter of weeks based on Statcounter data, or months based on other data, such as NetApplications.

Of course, even though the large trends have been relatively stable, Internet Explorer is losing market share, Chrome is gaining, Firefox isn't going anywhere, nothing is set in stone.
