KPN: preview Q2 2009 (July 23)

KPN will report on its second quarter results on Thursday 23 July, before opening of the stock market. In this brief we take a look at KPN's performance during the first quarter, and make some extrapolations regarding the net additions of broadband and mobile services in 2009. We also make estimates for KPN's P&L, to see that growth is in line with company guidance. The original 'Back to Growth' guidance still stands largely, but Getronics and the coverage shortage at the pension fund take a cut. Other issues include the pending appointment of a new CFO, possible add-on acquisitions, Sympac's new business model and the ongoing FTTx trials. All in all, KPN has a very strong focus on maintaining its bottom line, i.e. its free cash flow and dividend, and has shown the ability to deliver on this.

West European broadband prices are falling

Last quarter the average price for a broadband package in the low-end segments showed a sharp drop, while in the 12-20 Mbps and 20+ Mbps segments price rises were relatively small. Looking at the y-on-y change of average package prices in Q1 2008 and Q1 2009, prices fell in all the segments, except for the 1-2 Mbps segment. Price drops in the <1 Mbps and 4-8 Mbps segments were especially significant. In the UK there were steep price drops in the 4-8 Mbps and 8-12 Mbps
segments and fluctuating price developments in the 20+ Mbps segment. There was a striking lack of packages available in <1 Mbps and 1-2 Mbps segments in the UK. These conclusions are based on Telecompaper's quarterly Western European Broadband Pricing Updates. These updates are Excel sheets containing an overview of almost 1,000 consumer and business broadband services offered in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the
Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The average monthly fees mentioned in this report are calculated by taking the average of all consumer broadband monthly fees in the updates in separate speed segments.

'Fred' from Het Net not so effective

The Dutch broadband market only added 60,000 new connections during the first quarter of 2009 and the broadband providers spent more than EUR 19 million of advertising during that period. One could ask what the effect is of all the advertising on broadband, telephony and triple play packages, and which provider is doing a good job, i.e. does spending a lot also means a lot of new subscribers? Looking at the growth figures in relation to the marketing spend, there is no relation between total advertising spend and net added customers. On average the market pays EUR 320 per net added customer, with KPN, Tele2, Ziggo and Alice outperforming the market. This brief provides an insight into the total advertising spend in relation to the installed base and growth of customers. It also analyses which companies are most effective.
