Only 10% use VoD in the Netherlands

In the Netherlands Video on Demand has not yet taken off, as only around ten percent of the population has used it during spring/summer of 2009, as is shown by research from Telecompaper's Consumer Panel. From those who have used it, the vast majority prefers to use the TV for VoD services instead of the internet. Free TV programs were by far the most popular type of program to watch as a VoD service. VoD offerings are expected to grow in the coming years.

Ethnic MVNOs in the Netherlands, USA and UK

During the past year Telecompaper has, at various intervals, researched the ethnic MNVO market in the Netherlands as well as the USA and the UK. When looking at the overall MVNO penetration (including ethnic) it is clear that the Netherlands and the UK markets are quite comparable, while the USA is by far less developed. In terms of ethnic MVNOs, in the USA and the Netherlands there are six ethnic MVNOs currently operating; in the UK there are five with one having been announced to start later this year. The Netherlands has both general ethnic MVNOs and ones focusing on a particular ethnic group. In the USA they are all focused on a particular ethnic community whereas in the UK they are mostly general ethnic MVNOs. In these countries we expect the MVNO phenomenon to flourish mainly due to the current economic situation which will force customers to look for ways to reduce their costs.

Connected TV allows operators to benefit from OTT content

The Connected TV is best described as a broadband-enabled TV, via either a set-top- box or built-in technology. For telecom operators, the added broadband consumption is something to reckon with, but it also creates an opportunity for them to differentiate their current me-too triple play offerings. Also, they can add new revenue streams from sources such as VoD and advertising. Being able to offer over-the-top content to the TV screen is the most important driver, but the couch potato issue still is a major inhibitor. In this brief we discuss the Connected TV opportunity for operators, and present Metrological, whose management we spoke with, as a special case.

The roundtable meetings started in autumn 2008 after a difference in business models at utilities provider EWZ and Swisscom seemed to be leading to a doubling of infrastructure deployment. The FTTH standards agreement was preceded by several FTTH deals between Swisscom or Orange Switzerland and local utilities, and this research brief offers an overview of these developments.
