Will Operators Be Out-Foxed In IPTV Market? (Western Europe Telecommunications Insight)

Many European operators have barely got their television services up and running, but competitors are already looking to throw a spanner in the works. Internet-based television is currently a hot topic among incumbent operators. As cable companies encroach on their traditional territory by offering fixed-line telephony and broadband internet over their cable networks, telecoms providers are looking to fight back.

Vodafone Deal Heralds Shake-Up Of Mobile Retail Sector (Western Europe Telecommunications Insight)

BMI believes that Vodafone's recent decision to terminate its partnership with mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse heralds wider changes in the way that mobile phone operators sell their services, both in the UK and across Europe. Indeed, rival operators are already looking to take advantage of Carphone Warehouse's weakened position by renegotiating their contracts with the retailer.

Swiss Operators To Begin Joint Mobile TV Trials (Western Europe Telecommunications Insight)

Swisscom Broadcast is set to begin trials of its mobile TV service, which will be carried out over a three-month period ending in January 2007. Around 200 people residing in the city of Berne are due to take part in the trial, which will be carried out in conjunction with Swisscom Mobile, sunrise and Orange. While it is not thought that commercial launch of the service will be carried out any time soon after the trial, it will provide both Swisscom Broadcast and the mobile operators with an opportunity to conduct market research. Operators will be able to judge the

BMI View: Swiss Spending Remains High Despite Slow 3G Take-Up (Western Europe Telecommunications Insight)

Given that Switzerland boasts one of the highest standards of living in the world, it comes as no surprise that its telecoms industry is highly developed. BMI's latest Switzerland Telecommunications Report reveals high penetration rates in all sectors, particularly the broadband market, where the unbundling of the 'last mile' connection is allowing alternative operators to compete more effectively with incumbent operator

German MVNOs Look To Challenge Network Operator Dominance (Western Europe Telecommunications Insight)

The German mobile market provides a tough trading environment for operators. With penetration rates now at 100%, new customers are hard to come by and BMI is predicting growth of just 4% during 2006. This growth is coming in large part from mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs), service providers that operate by renting network capacity from the four network operators (T-Mobile, Vodafone, E-plus and O2). Germany's MVNOs offer mainly simple prepaid services at low prices and are estimated to account for around 25mn of Germany's 82mn mobile subscribers.

Sistema Seeks To Infiltrate Deutsche Telekom Ranks (Emerging Europe Telecommunications Insight)

In what could be a marriage of two telecoms giants, Russian conglomerate Sistema is seeking to acquire a stake in Deutsche Telekom. According to the Financial Times, Sistema has suggested the full integration of its telecoms division into Deutsche Telekom, in return for a stake of between 10 and 20% in the German operator. The matter has apparently already been discussed by the Deutsche Telekom board after the proposal was put to CEO Kai-Uwe Ricke. However, Sistema has declined to confirm the rumours and the German government has said that no official offer had been made.

LTE-Over-Satellite To Boost Kiribati Broadband Market (Asia Pacific Telecommunications Insight)

Telecom Services of Kiribati Ltd (TSKL) has contracted Australia's Challenge Networks to build a new mobile broadband network that will be capable of delivering high-speed services across the country's 22 inhabited islands. The deal marks the first deployment of 4G LTE technology in the Pacific Islands region, but, owing to the highly dispersed nature of the key population centres targeted by the rollout, LTE-over-satellite will be employed. The move comes 10 years after digital cellular services were first brought to Kiribati.

ITPC Selects Ericsson For Network Development (Middle East & Africa Telecommunications Insight)

Iraq's fixed-line incumbent telecoms operator, Iraqi Telecommunications and Post Company (ITPC), has awarded a contract to Swedish equipment vendor Ericsson to expand its wireline network and roll out IP technology as part of a next generation network transition process. This development bodes well for fixed-line services in Iraq, especially the underserved broadband sector. However, we retain the view that the sector's full potential can best be reached through competition.

Reliance Brothers Finally Join Hands (Asia Pacific Telecommunications Insight)

India's Ambani brothers - Mukesh and Anil - have announced a business collaboration eight years after splitting their father's enterprise. The deal involves Mukesh's Reliance Jio Infocomm (a subsidiary of Reliance Industries) using the fibre network of Anil's Reliance Communications to provide the backbone for the former's TD-LTE 4G service. BMI had flagged up in February that a partnership between the two companies would be an ideal scenario. One of the biggest outcomes would be Reliance Jio Infocomm being able to quickly deliver its 4G services and kick start the languishing market.

3G Shutdown A Temporary Solution? (Asia Pacific Telecommunications Insight)

Less than one a month after its launch, North Korea has suspended 3G mobile internet access for tourists entering the country. A message posted on the Koryo Tours website states that: 'SIM cards can still be purchased to make international calls but no internet access is available.' No indication of the possible reasons behind the decision has yet been given; we believe it may only be a temporary decision in response to a series of escalating tensions on the peninsula.

4G Growth Opportunity For Ooredoo (Middle East & Africa Telecommunications Insight)

After rebranding from Qtel in February 2013, Ooredoo has launched Qatar's first LTE mobile network. The move will enable Qatar to catch up with neighbouring Saudi Arabia, the UAE and other GCC countries, which began offering 4G services in 2011-2012. BMI believes that, as the sole 4G LTE network provider in Qatar, Ooredoo will be able to reclaim some of the market share it has lost to Vodafone since 2009.

Mixed Fortunes For New Gaming Portal (Middle East & Africa Telecommunications Insight)

Bahrain Telecommunications Company (Batelco) awarded Ericsson the exclusive contract to build the country's first 4G LTE network and launched a dedicated gaming portal aimed squarely at the extensive youth market. The LTE contract award gives Batelco an edge over its rivals in rolling out 4G services nationwide, but the introduction of a gaming service that initially focuses on feature phones could be seen as a potential missed opportunity, in BMI's view.

Kazakhtelecom Consolidation Strategy Targets Data Demand (Emerging Europe Telecommunications Insight)

Kazakhstan national telecoms operator, Kazakhtelecom (KT), has announced the 100% acquisition of Digital TV, a pay-TV and cable operator, previously owned by holding company, Alem Communications. This move follows KT's acquisition of operator MaxCom in March 2013, both for undisclosed figures. BMI believes KT favours a strategy of consolidation in the broadband, fixed-line and pay-TV sectors, as it looks to capitalise on a growing demand for data and strengthen its dominant position.

Bright Outlook For Mobile Cloud Solutions (Middle East & Africa Telecommunications Insight)

Following a trial in December 2012, MTN has gone live with its cloud service offerings in six markets across Africa. The service targets small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and will be available in Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda and South Africa. MTN has adopted the Cloud Brokerage Service (CBS) model as opposed to offering its own solution, which we believe highlights potential risks and opportunities in the region. BMI believes the trend towards mobile substitution could be a key driver for cloud services in the region.
