Tracing a Line follows a single melody - from Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata BWV 60 - as it is reimagined across the centuries. The Encounters Ensemble orchestra performs selections from Johann Rudolph Ahle's four-part folk chorale, Alban Berg's violin concerto "To the memory of an angel," Samuel Beckett's short play Nacht und Träume and a new orchestra piece composed by Matthew Aucoin, conductor, poet and creator of this special program. Tracing a Line incorporates elements of theater, architecture, visual art and instrumental and vocal music from the 17th through the 21st centuries to create a new work of art at PEM. Combining literary, theatrical, choral and orchestral elements, Tracing a Line seeks to upend classical music performance conventions and provide a platform for direct interface between artist and audience. This singular performance, conceived by PEM's new Composer-in-Residence Matt Aucoin and his two collaborators Victoria Crutchfield (director) and Keir GoGwilt (first violinist), follows a single melody through time.

SALEM, MA –– Sip specialty cocktails made with fresh basil and thyme and dig right into this fabulous party that celebrates growing gardens, eating local and the rootsy sound of Dan & The Wildfire. These Boston-based boys from Berklee College of Music are drawing crowds as they perform up and down the East Coast.

Join us as we discover new ways to use seasonal and locally grown food. We welcome folks from both Salem Community Gardens and Salem Farmers' Market to share tips for gardening and local, healthy eating.

Meanwhile, environmental artist Kyle Browne demonstrates how to create a seedbomb, a little ball made of compost, clay and seeds that can be launched into inaccessible areas such as wasteland or railways. Beverly Chamber of Commerce presents the Third Annual Small Business Showcase

Celebrate Small Business Month by making plans to attend the 3rd Annual Beverly Business Showcase this Thursday, May 16th, at the North Shore Music Theatre, one of our biggest networking events of the year.

The event begins at 5pm with cocktails and networking in the theatre lobby. Then at 5:30 we move into the theatre for a short presentation by theatre owner Bill Hanney about their upcoming 2013 season, and a few words from our Presenting Sponsor, TDBank. The Beverly High School Jazz Band will be there to play a few songs, and then……we will have a drawing for a new iPad. You must be present in the theatre between 5:30 and 6:00 to win the iPad.

At 6pm the Showcase begins in the Theatre Arts & Education building right next door. Forty something businesses will showcase their products and services, and many of them will have free samples and raffles. RAW ART WORKS Annual Party with a Purpose

On Saturday, May 18th, Raw Art Works will celebrate its 11th annual BASH: Party with a Purpose. We hope that this year you will join other businesses and community leaders in making your mark on RAW's signature annual fundraising event. In 2012, we saw our most successful BASH to date, raising an astounding $180,000. This year, with the help of sponsors such as you, we hope to meet and exceed that goal. The BASH is a unique event,drawing over 300 RAW supporters from the North Shore and Greater Boston into the heart of Lynn. Sunday...ROAD TRIP!

Boston has enjoyed a deep relationship with Japan since the days of the Iwakura Mission of 1871. In April of 2012 the city celebrated the 100th anniversary of the friendship gift of cherry trees from Kyoto to Washington D.C. by hosting a Japan Spring Festival with support from the Consulate-General of Japan in Boston and in cooperation with local Japanese businesses and organizations. The festival was held in Boston's historic Copley Square Park in the heart of the city and was modeled after a traditional Japanese fair. The celebration exceeded all expectations, with over 13,000 participants in attendance. The success of the festival was due largely in part to the unprecedented level of cooperation from the local Japanese community. Around the same time as the festival, the city celebrated the addition of a new direct flight option between Boston Logan airport and Narita airport, bringing the two cultures and peoples closer than ever.

After much consideration, we have decided to expand the event into an annual festival. The 2013 Japan Festival in Boston will focus on the theme of "matsuri," the time-honored traditional Japanese-style festival. We hope that you will celebrate with us this year. Admission Free! All are welcome!

Toshio Shibata Exhibit at Peabody Essex Museum

The Japanese photographer Toshio Shibata has spoken of the balance between natural and manmade environments in his images. He takes photographs of engineering works — "architecture" would be too grand a word — often situated in handsome settings. Dams and power plants are one thing. The industrial sublime is still sublime. Abutments, pavement, aquatic booms, those are quite another. How about a waterfall behind a chain-link fence?
The juxtaposition is all the more striking for Shibata's having photographed the fencing so that it looks like a vine."Toshio Shibata, Constructed Landscapes" runs at the Peabody Essex Museum through Dec. 31. The show consists of 28 photographs, taken between 1988 and 2012. Some are as large as 49 inches by 60 inches. None is smaller than 25 inches by 30 inches.

2013 Mass Poetry Festival

The first weekend of May, Salem becomes the epicenter of contemporary

American poetry, offering rare opportunities to hear the nation's best poets read and discuss their work in intimate and engaging forums. Highlights include:

Friday evening, Tracy K. Smith (Life on Mars), winner of the 2012 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry, joins poet and memoirist, Nick Flynn (Another Bullshit Night in Suck City), and Jill McDonough (Where You Live) for an unforgettable evening of poems about the humor and the dysfunction of family, Michael Jackson and the Hubble telescope. 7:30–9:30 p.m. in the Atrium of the Peabody Essex Museum.

Saturday evening, Sharon Olds (Stag's Leap), 2013 winner of the TS Eliot Poetry Prize joins the 2010 National Book Award for Poetry winner, Terrance Hayes (Lighthead), and Eduardo C. Corral (Slow Lightning), whose first collection won the prestigious Yale Series of Younger Poets competition. The three writers demonstrate the extraordinary possibilities of poetry to reveal the personal and political experiences of American life. 7:30–9 p.m. at the First Universalist Church of Salem.

Sunday afternoon, Santa Fe-based poet Arthur Sze (The Ginkgo Light), recent winner of the Jackson Poetry Prize, joins Cambridge-based Gail Mazur (Figures in a Landscape) 2:15–3:15 p.m. at PEM's Native American Gallery.

The 1994 winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry, Yusef Komunyakaa (The Chameleon Couch) joins two award-winning poets with roots in Massachusetts: Kevin Goodan (Winter Tenor) and Erica Funkhouser

(Earthly) 3:45–4:45, PEM's East India Room.

The Massachusetts Poetry Festival offers poetry readings, workshops, a small press fair, panels, music, and visual arts. Panel topics range broadly from a Cinco de Mayo reading, Taboo, and the Common Threads Reading, where contemporary poets in Massachusetts discuss their literary heirs. More than 100 poets will engage with thousands of people. Admission for all weekend events is $15, $7 for students and seniors. - Need help brushing up your resume and preparing for a job search? High school students and adults can attend a free workshop sponsored by the North Shore Workforce Development Center to gain these valuable skills.
- Wondering how to dress for your body type? Ladies can join Modern Millie staff in a class on leveraging fashion from throughout the ages to fit your figure.

The Salem Theatre Company is organizing…A DESTINATION DANCE WALK to let everyone know: Where in the World is STC!

Join us – on Sunday, May 5 at 2pm - for our Destination Dance Walk – from Salem Commons to our theatre at 90 Lafayette Street.

What's a "dance walk?"

It's a group of happy people free-dancing down the sidewalk to the sound of great dance music! No choreography…no rehearsals…no restraints. Just fun.

Major photo op!

• Our Dance Walk Captains will organize and lead this joyful "happening."

• We ask participants wear theatrical (read: crazy) hats…Wearer of "Best Hat" wins a Dinner for Two at Howling Wolf!

On Saturday, April 27, the Salem YMCA is celebrating YMCA's Healthy Kids Day® with a free community event that encourages kids to get moving and learning, and families living healthier. Healthy Kids Day, the Y's national initiative to improve families' health and well-being, takes place at 1,900 Ys and kick-starts healthier behaviors now and throughout the summer, a critical out-of-school time for children's health.

Beats for Boston Fundraiser

Join the Wicked Running Club, Danvers 5K, Social Palates and Pamplemousse for a DJ Extravaganza to benefit the Woolfenden Family of Salem who were among those seriously effected by tragic events at the Boston Marathon.

Beats for Boston will feature DJ Sets by Forrest James, Qwill, Radio Scotvoid & Noel Snow.

Cash Bar and Dancing All Night! Live raffle!

Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at Pamplemousse, at The Wicked & D5K weekly fun run & 43 Church by cash or check. All proceeds go directly to the Woolfenden Family Fund started by Salem 5 Bank. (checks can be made to The Woolfenden Family Fund)

First Friday of every month businesses stay open late and offer special events, discounts and promotions.

Exciting Salem First Friday on tap this Friday night March 1st! Do you believe in magic- close your eyes, tap your heels and join us for a magical night! Downtown and Pickering Wharf businesses host special events including cooking demonstrations, live music, art showings and all manner of creative events!

Salem First Friday happens the first Friday of every month and it is a chance for businesses to stay open a little later than usual or offer special discounts/promotions as a way of giving back to their fantastic customers and give them a chance to showcase their wares at a convenient time. Scavenger Hunt promotion with Oz the Great and Powerful

Special this month is a cross promotion with Disney that includes a scavenger hunt with the theme of the up and coming movie Oz the Great and Powerful. Customers need only to check into 8 participating First Friday businesses and end at Cinema Salem where they will turn in their check in cards for a chance to win a fantastic OZ in Salem prize pack. Their will also be exclusive 3D glasses and Iphone cases for a certain number of special customers as they check in. Their will be a face painter and an extended cut edition of the Oz trailer in the Cinema Cafe.
