The easiest way of increasing your profits is to sell something to your existing customers. After all they’ve purchased something from you before. So it’s highly likely they already know, like and trust you because of their first purchase.

So how do you get started?

Now what I’m about to share with you only makes sense if you’re already selling product.

Let’s say you’re selling a $27 ebook and it’s making you $540 a week.

That’s 20 sales and 20 new customers.

What if as soon as they ordered your ebook you send them to a page where you offer them a special price on another related ebook or ecourse for the same amount of money (or more)?

Simple right?

If you don’t have another ebook to offer them you’ve got 3 choices…

1. Create another related product
2. Find a related product that has PLR rights (you can put your name on it and change the contents)
3. Write an honest review as an affiliate for someone else’s related product

The very best product to upsell to is always going to be a membership product which gives you a monthly income which grows as you bring in more and more people.

We’ve just completed building a product funnel ourselves for a new training course called “The Affiliate Marketing Samurai“.

I’ve simplified the upsell process in the example above but what we’ve done is created a CD we’re giving to people for the cost of shipping. Those people who order the CD are then offered our monthly membership affiliate training for about $27 a month. Then people who buy that are offered a higher priced affiliate training product for $197.

You could do something similar and you’ll probably be able to quadruple your customer value in no time. All because you’re selling more related information and training to your new customers, as soon as they’ve ordered the first time.

To many people listbuilding can be a nightmare, but listbuilding is easier than you think once you know where to start.

The problem is there are way too many ways of getting started building a subscriber list. It’s hard to know which ones work and which ones to avoid at all costs.

If you’ve been online for any length of time your email in-box is probably overflowing with the marketing messages of countless other marketers all trying to sell you their latest and greatest course or product.

The competition appears to be fierce at first glance, but don’t let this put you off. Most marketers have no idea when it comes to listbuilding and how to use email to get people to know, like and trust you.

I’d like to share with you 3 steps to helping you get started with listbuilding…

1. Get a Name Squeeze Page

When you’re just starting out at listbuilding there’s one thing you’re going to need… a “name squeeze page”. It’s a special web page designed to squeeze people for their name and email address (hence the name). Without one you simply cannot build a subscriber list.

Before you run off and get yourself a name squeeze page you first need to decide what is it you’re going to give people of value in exchange for their name and email address?

An even bigger question than this is who is your target audience going to be? Are you going to build a list of people who want to loose weight, or who love Nascar? Or maybe even other people interested in online marketing?

Once you know who you’re going to be targeting it’s time to cook up something of value for them. This could be as simple as you finding an expert in your market and interviewing them. Then offering the interview from your name squeeze page.

Or it could be you buy PLR rights to an ebook someone else has written (but you can add your name to).

Once you know what you’re going to offer then it’s time to build your squeeze page.

My best advice is don’t do it for free. Whilst it can be done you’re limiting yourself severely and you’re not communicating a professional image resulting in fewer subscribers.

Here’s how it’s done:

a) Go to HostGator.com and buy a basic website hosting package their (which includes a domain name). When you create your domain name make sure it includes the word that describes the subject of your offer (weight loss or nascar).

b) Install WordPress, this can be done within your HostGator control panel at the click of a button.

c) Buy and install this theme: GetPremise.com (they call name squeeze pages “landing pages” but they’re basically the same thing).

GetPremise gives you the design for your name squeeze page and also helps you make it persuasive.

d) Get a professional autoresponder, I recommend Aweber.com

You’ll need this as it’s how you manage a list of 1,000′s of people. Try managing this using OutLook! it’s not going to happen. You simply must use a professional autoresponder service like Aweber.com.

2. Write follow-up emails

Now that you have your name squeeze page set up offering your interview recording, PDF ebook (or whatever it might be) it’s time to write your email follow-ups.

It’s your email follow-ups that are going to get people to know, like and trust you, then hopefully buy from you.

The best way of approaching this is by telling people short stories from your own personal life. Then tie those stories into the product you’re promoting. By telling people something about you personally they start to connect with you, they start to like you and then they start to trust you. It won’t happen in 1 email but over time it will, which is why you need to regularly contact your subscribers by email.

If you’re using a professional autoresponder system then all you do is copy and paste your emails into the system. Set your emails to go out each day, hit the save button and everything will be taken care of for you by your autoresponder system.

3. Drive traffic to your name squeeze page

This is where the real Internet Marketing begins. Your job now is to spend one hour every day driving traffic to your squeeze page.

Here are some really easy ways of getting started:

a) Find forums in your niche, join them and start helping others. In your signature file advertise your squeeze page. Forums can be a really powerful way of establishing you as an expert.

b) Comment on other people’s blogs. Just as you did with forums you can join in with conversations on blogs inside your niche. When you find a blog you like be sure to post their regularly. When you do this you can sometimes get the attention of the blog owner who would then be more open to doing future JV’s with you.

c) Write articles and submit them to article directories. Articles are one of the most powerful long-term ways of getting traffic to your squeeze page. There’s one marketer I know of and that’s all he did, he wrote 1,000′s of articles over a 12 month period, each article sent people to his squeeze pages. He used no other methods of driving traffic and gets all the traffic he could ever wish for, all because of his intensive focus on writing as many articles as possible in the shortest time.

Those are just 3 of many free ways of driving traffic to your website.

If you’re new to Internet marketing, you might be thinking that you don’t need a website. I get that. I remember when I first started almost 8 years ago…

I had little money to invest and wanted to be able to do things without having to shell out regular funds. You see, my husband of 38 years, whom I love dearly, told me that I’d never make a dime online. Ha! You already know that I proved him wrong.  And I’m guessing that you get that from your friends and/or family, too. So, if you want to use me as an example of why that’s baloney… you’re welcome to do it.

Anyway, I didn’t want to get into regular monthly payment commitments until I had something going. I really didn’t want to hear about how I wasn’t going to succeed because it really made me want to do it more, but it still made me mad. I have never been a friend of negativity and think that you can do ANYTHING you put your mind to.  I just didn’t want to hear it.

So, I do understand.

But here’s the thing…

Even though it’s a regular monthly expense, hosting is something you can’t afford NOT to have.

I mean, you can get away with having one domain. That’s about $11 a year right now, eh? No big expense. But hosting can cost anywhere from a couple of bucks a month to huge stupid amounts that you really don’t need to spend when starting out (or ever really), so don’t do that. But you do need hosting.

You need it so that you can establish a presence online, number 1. Nobody knows you when you first come online, and unless you build a reputation with people who will come to know you, like you, and ultimately trust you, you won’t make many sales, if any at all. It’s a jungle out there and people really aren’t interested in dealing with anybody that they perceive as fly-by-night or scammy. You know that because I’m guessing you think like that, too. I know that I don’t give out my credit card number to just anyone.

So, you should have a blog. Blogs are great because they allow people to know who you are and more importantly, what you know about your niche. People  want to work with experts, not people that they aren’t so sure of.  What’s great about having your own hosting account, is that you can set up a WordPress blog with a click of a button, use it to bond with an audience, and sell anything you want from it. Blogs are awesome!

I know that some of you are thinking that you can have a free blog at WordPress.com, but don’t make that mistake. WordPress.com won’t allow you to sell anything or even use affiliate links. If they find them on your blog there, they’ll just yank the plug and all of your content is GONE, baby, gone! I know people this has happened to, and most of the other free blogging sites are the same. Don’t make that mistake!

But aside from blogs, having your own hosting account also allows you to set up squeeze pages so that you can build a list of subscribers. Since you’re reading this blog, I’m guessing that you already know that or you wouldn’t be here.  And yes, it’s true that you will also have to spring for an autoresponder for your list, but that’s how you can really make money online, folks.  Yet, that’s not what I’m here to talk about today.

Hosting is  the topic, and here are some things you need to look for in a good hosting company, and trust me, price shouldn’t be the first consideration…

#1, you definitely want someone reliable — a hosting company that rarely goes down — because if it does, you can’t make any money from your website.  Look for a company that is up 99.9% of the time. (Let’s face it, they all go down, but you want those occurrences to be insignificant and unnoticeable.)

#2. you want a hosting company that’s stable. If you have a brand-new company that wants to give you hosting for $1 a month, that’s probably what it’s worth. Stability and longevity online are both important because moving a website can be a pain. It’s doable, but something you definitely don’t want to do very often, if at all.

#3, (the most important thing about finding a good hosting company) is that it has great customer support. You want to be able to call a human being when something isn’t going right and get your questions answered. VERY important.

Want to know what the only company I would recommend is? (And this is a personal recommendation, though most of us at OE use this company) –

Host Gator is up 99.9% of the time, has great customer service by email or telephone, and they’ve been around a long time. And guess what? Easy to use! You can install a WordPress blog in about 5 minutes using cPanel with Fantastico, which is what the Gator offers.

Am I being paid to tell you this? Yes. I will be paid, or at least Overcome Everything will, but I just don’t promote things here or to my own personal list that aren’t great. It’s bad business.

So, if you want to great company to deal with and your business to grow, go over to Host Gator and sign up for the “Baby Gator” account, which is around $10 a month.  It will help you to grow your business and serve you for a very long time. With that account, you can have as many domains as you wish, create as many databases (like blogs, affiliate programs, tracking programs, etc.) that you like, and as much bandwidth as you need — all for that $10 a month.

It’s so worth it.

Anyway, just wanted to let you know why I think hosting accounts are MUST haves for a new business, no matter how new they are, and think about it this way:

$10 a month is a far smaller investment than a brick and mortar franchise or even the electric bill for a small Mom and Pop store. That’s why I LOVE the Internet. It’s so easy and fun to set up what you need, and you totally can’t beat the price. Right?

If you’ve been in the IM game for very long, you have undoubtedly heard the phrase “Content is King.” Well… it’s true!

But with the newest Google algorithm update, if you want your content to get some killer search engine traffic, your content also needs to be unique. Yep… that’s right. No more flooding the Web with articles that all say the same thing. No more scraper sites that just take content from other people’s blogs. It’s over!

You see, Google doesn’t want to see sites of “low quality” in their index, and certainly not on their search results pages. So, they laid down the law last month. Some tactics you might have been using are so gone, baby, GONE.

Why should you care?

Google is the 600-pound gorilla in the room when it comes to search engines. It still gets around 65% of all searchers coming to their engine and placing requests. For that reason, people into SEO watch what Google does.

And why is search traffic important?

Because a) it’s targeted. That means when someone types a query into Google they know what they want. They’re actively looking for whatever it is you have to sell.  b) Google traffic tends to convert pretty darned well. And c) it’s free. What’s better than free?

So, the simple lesson for today, whether you’re a newbie just learning all this marketing stuff or an old hand at IM, is to create cool stuff and Google will love you. Try to scam the system and you can kiss that traffic good-bye, maybe forever, if you’re doing anything they really hate. You know, the Black Hat stuff? It’s just not worth it.

And you’ll be better respected by your audience in the long run, too. They don’t want to read the same crappy PLR article on your blog that they read on three other blogs that morning. Create something new, unique, and useful on a regular basis, and you can’t lose!

I was inside the Internet Selling System site working with some of our amazing customers today, and one of the questions was about mailing. We encourage folks to add an RSS feed to their email account so that every time they write a blog post, that is sent to the people on their list. We also encourage them to write in their blogs every day.

People really do love consistency. They like to look into their email inbox every Monday or Friday or whatever and see a message from you.

I have a newsletter that I subscribe to, as I have done for about 15 years now. I found the guy when I first got online and he worked for PC World. His name is Steve Bass and his newsletters are always helpful and always fun to read. Look him up. You’ll love him!

I look forward to getting those emails every week and because I get so much enjoyment from them, well… I’ve been on his list for 15 years! Think about it. In Internet terms, that’s like a millenium!

One of our students worried that sending out an email every day would burn out the list. And you know what? If you’re doing nothing but sending sales emails every day and never giving your customers valuable content that they can use to solve their problems, yep… You probably will burn out your list. People don’t want to hear the 99th time what you or someone else is selling, they want to know how you can help them.

Keep that in mind.

When you offer regular, valuable information to folks, they’re much more likely to accept your recommendations when you ask them to buy something. This transfer of great information allows them to TRUST you, and unless people do that, they aren’t going to buy squat.

The bottom line is that you need a newsletter or something to send your list that is pure content. Even if you only do it a couple of times a week, it will make a big difference in how people appreciate you, how they respect you, and how they buy from you. And it’s only fair, right? If you expect something from other people, it’s only fair that they expect something from you in return.

New marketers often allow stumbling blocks to stop them dead in their tracks. I know I did.

I remember when I first started with Internet marketing 7+ years ago. I couldn’t figure out what a niche was, let alone which one I should be in. I mean, there were so many affiliate products, why not just put them all on one page?

That was obviously the wrong thing to do. As it turns out, if you give people too many choices, they’ll just do nothing. Marketing 101. Duh.

But what hung me up the most was picking my domain name. I mean, I had one waaaay back in like 1998, when I bought my name at PatMarcello.com. But it was a writing site, as it is today, and had nothing at all to do with affiliate marketing. So, that was out.

Five Rules for Choosing a Good Domain Name

Here are the only five things you should remember when buying your domain:

1. Make it short, so people can easily type it into the address bar.
2. Make it easy to spell.
3. Avoid hyphens and underscores
4. If you’re going to have a word that sounds like a numeral, be sure that you buy all of the domains that apply and then, redirect two of them to your main domain. (For the word for, for example, you should also buy four and 4 and maybe even fore. Lots of bad spellers out there. )
5. Also avoid weird spellings.

Other than that, no worries. Get the domain you want. Start with your name, maybe, like I did way back when. That’s easiest to come up with. But it really doesn’t matter and here’s why…

Google Hiccuped Again

Before 2011, everyone who was anyone told you that it was smart to have a domain with your keyword in it. I even changed my domain in late 2009 to theSEONewsBlog.com because my blog is about SEO and I started it way back when I didn’t know WHAT I wanted to do. Now that I write about my passion for SEO every day, it just made sense to have my keyword in it.  And when I moved my blog, it really did help with my Google rankings.

That was then. This is now.

Google just came up with another algorithm change, as they often do. This time, they decided that they wanted people to stop trying to hard to show up in the search engines, and they definitely were tired of seeing a bunch of results that were nothing but what they considered to be “content farms.” Ezine Articles, for example, a very old and respected article directory that we ALL use, had enormous search engine traffic that dropped like a stone. Nothing much is original there. EZA depends on its users to provide content for it and much of it is duplicated out there on the Web. And they weren’t alone. Other sites that you would readily recognize also felt the impact.

But with this change, Google also put less emphasis on keyword-rich domains. They began to look askance at them. Hmm… If you’re trying so hard to get into the search results pages that you have to worry more about a keyword than a brand for your business…? You’re probably trying to mess with the system. And they made having a keyword in your domain much less important.

It’s true… Google isn’t the only search engine on the Internet, but they’re the big dog in the room, and if you don’t please the ghods at Google, you’re bound to miss out on all that high-quality, focused traffic that a good search plan can provide. But… for once, it’s not something to worry about that we need to recognize. It’s something we don’t have to worry about. It’s no longer that important, but providing great, unique content is. Just do that, and stop worrying about things that no longer matter.

There you have it. The “Panda” update by Google has eliminated the need to worry about a keyword-rich domain. Focus on your business. Find a good domain that follows the 5 rules of a good domain above and stop agonizing!

You may know me from the ListBuilding Club, where I’m the manager. Or, you may know me from the Internet Selling System. Orrr… maybe you just know me from kicking around the Web for the past 7 years or my blog at http://theSEONewsBlog.com.

But in case you don’t know me, I’m a blogger at heart. In fact, writing in this blog is a bit like coming home. I started this blog with Tellman back in 2006 and many of the posts you’ve read from way back when were mine. I mean, Tellman’s philosophy was always there, but I was usually the one doing the writing. I never told people that a long ways back, but now, everyone knows that so it’s no secret anymore. LOL… Tellman has way more important things on his mind, but he wants to keep in touch with his people.

That’s you. And he cares about each and every one of you. That was always what I liked about him and why I became his student first, and then became his writer.  I knew he cared and wanted to be part of that.

So, you’ve seen lots of folks posting here over time… Tellman, me, Josh, Jodi, Sarah, Victor, and well… a huge part of the Overcome Everything team.

The coolest part of that is that you keep reading and we love it! We love your comments, your kudos, and your questions. And so… I’m here again. I’m coming home and will be writing again… as me.

Don’t waste time trying to get those fancy videos installed on your squeeze pages. They won’t work now, and they won’t work ever.

Oh they’ll play alright, but in terms of boosting the optin rate on your squeeze pages above 60%, keep dreaming.

There are three fundamental reasons that video will never work on squeeze pages – and by the way, I realize that this is a bold assertion, and if I’m ever proven wrong I’ll happily eat my words, but follow along…

I think I make a pretty convincing cast that will help you build your list faster…

First off, it’s important to understand exactly what you’re trying to get your squeeze pages to do. They don’t exist to do any “selling” they don’t exist for name recognition or “branding” or professionalism – they exist solely to build you an email marketing list.

When you’ve got an email list, you can sell products and services through email with the push of the send button – it’s the simplest, quickest way to make a ton of sales and drive a flood of traffic for free that I’ve ever seen.

So, being that squeeze pages hold up the lions share of the responsibility for building you that list, it’s important to get them right. And to lots of sloppy marketers, that means throwing video on their squeeze pages… (without doing any scientific experimentation to prove that it actually helps you build your list faster).

I, on the other hand, am a sloppy marketer who HAS done some extensive scientific testing on squeeze pages, and over and over the results show that video is an unnecessary distraction that destroys conversions. Squeeze pages that once converted at an optin rate of 70% or higher could dip as low as 20%. Effectively, that’s like slashing your list down to just a fragment of it’s potential for no good reason.

So, the three fundamental reasons that I’ve concieved of why squeeze pages will never play nice with video are as follows:

1) Video can take time to load, and people are impatient. If you’re setting up something on your squeeze pages that could be driving away the impatient visitors you get then you’re qualifying your list based on who is the least impulsive.

That’s stupid. Your impulsive subscribers are going to be your biggest spenders, your most frequent customers, and your bread and butter as an online entrepreneur.

Don’t scare off the impulsive types from your squeeze pages by making them wait for your video to load - instead, make your squeeze pages simple, easy to understand and quick to scan. Your prospect should get the whole “gist” in 10 seconds or less. If they want to learn more, they can opt into your squeeze pages and get on your list.

2) Squeeze pages are like the cover of a book. And believe it or not, people really do judge books by their covers. If you’ve got a video that even 10% of your traffic thinks is “cheezy” or “boring” or “unprofessional” then you’re scaring off potential customers needlessly.

Those same people who flee from your video squeeze pages could flock to your videos after they get a chance to know you through email – don’t jump the video gun too soon and scare them off.

3) Squeeze pages don’t require video. There’s no need for it. Anything you need to say to get people to opt in can be written in a headline, and – if your specific offer is complex (which it shouldn’t be) maybe a list of benefit packed bullet points.

Adding video to squeeze pages is putting lipstick on a pig, except the pig is a piggybank and the lipstick is a grenade. Don’t explode your profits because someone told you video is “great on squeeze pages”.

It’s not. Don’t do it.

And if you do, make sure you run a good scientific split test between your video squeeze pages and one or ones without video. I’ll bet you your nose hair you won’t get any video squeeze pages to convert at over 60%.

Squeeze pages are about to be your new best friends… Because traffic is a pain in the ass to get.

I know – I’ve been on a wild hunt for targeted traffic more times than I’d like to share. The late nights spent working furiously, the early mornings spent depressed because of lackluster results…

And then, when you’re persistent and keep trying, sometimes you hit a little traffic oil gusher and it all seems to pay off – for a while… The problem is, once that spurt dies down you’ve got to go and do it all over again…

Well, not if you’re using squeeze pages to lock that traffic down for future use.

Squeeze pages are a great addition to your traffic driving efforts because they let you collect the names and emails of your interested website visitors, so you can market to them later on with cool offers and special deals. Most marketers who go about things the “old way” don’t put much stock in squeeze pages because it seems like an unnecessary extra step…

“Why should I use squeeze pages? That’s just one more step between my traffic and a sale” is the common argument.

But to answer it – you should do it because the more people who sign into your squeeze pages, the more people you get on your list, and the more traffic you can drive ANY time with just an email.

It’s a little crazy that you can set traffic aside for later with squeeze pages, but for many online businesses, it’s the best way to stay afloat. Imagine, instead of working and working for a shot of temporary traffic – work only as long as you need to to build the kind of list you need to lock in huge traffic surges for life…

And any time you want to make more money with your emails? Just get out there, put the pedal to the metal and drive some more traffic to your squeeze pages. A list of just 5,000 people could potentially make you $5,000 a month or more – and many Internet marketers consider the value of the list their squeeze pages build them to be just that, one dollar per month per subscriber.

Of course, for you it could be more, and it could be less, but when you lock your traffic down with squeeze pages one thing is for sure, you’re not going to have to fight to get that traffic again.

Squeeze pages are just one of the great tactical elements of a targeted email marketing campaign. When you put all the pieces together you build something pretty amazing -a list of people you can send an email to with the push of a button to make practically hands free cash at will…

It may sound like a pipe dream, but if you watch this short video I think you’ll agree it’s a reality that you or anyone can put to work in your business.

Internet Marketers keep some dirty secrets from the general public.

I know, because I’m one of them.

And trust me, it’s a good thing we keep these secrets, because the world does not want to know this kind of thing (some secrets are best kept to yourself)… The secret about the real value of squeeze pages is going to knock your shoes onto another person’s feet (but I promise you it would make most people angry)…

Since you decided to read an article about “Dirty IM Secrets” then I can reasonably assume you’re not a member of the general public (and you’ll be excited, not upset when you learn this crazy money secret). I fully intend for you to actually use these dirty secrets about squeeze pages for your own money making purposes.

First, lets get clear on exactly what I’m talking about when I say “Squeeze pages” – I’m talking about a simple page with an optin form that has a place someone can enter their name and email address. Squeeze pages help marketers like me build lists of email addresses for email marketing. (selling stuff with emails – it’s simple, but people rarely think to do it).

To the average person who comes across squeeze pages in their routine of surfing around – it might seem as innocent as a “login” screen or something like that – but squeeze pages are designed to capture that email address and essentially, to turn it into money.

When you get reasonably decent at making squeeze pages, you can expect (and this is a total guestimation, there are a ton of factors at play) about $1.00 per email address you get per month.

That means, your squeeze pages are worth whatever number of email addresses they collect in dollars per month…
