A small “p” is beautiful…affordable!
Prices of almost everything around us have increased. The gasoline that we buy for our cars, the food that we eat, the clothing that we wear, the gas that we use for cooking, the prices of services, prices of almost anything that we can think of. Even the smiles that we hope to see from our friends and people around us may have practically diminished due to the many more problems that almost everybody is facing with the tightening up of the whole economy. More and more people are having less and less commodities, I believe, based on what is happening around us, particularly the increasing unemployment and under employment rate. This however, does not necessarily mean having less and less in life, as the air, love and care around us continue to be in abundance.

In view of all these things, I should say, that small has become more beautiful these days, and affordable, too. The fact is that there are items that we really need, like the food items at the grocery stores, the many other household necessities, health care, etc., etc. No matter, what the prices of goods are, you still need them, and when there are no substitutes, all the more you need to stick to a particular item, but perhaps much lesser in quantity at any given time, or small packs at a time.

There is much wisdom for business, therefore to make small and beautiful repackaging of their usual bulk sizes of goods and commodities, so they continue to be affordable to the common man. For a business to recognize this, it would mean operating more years ahead into the future. It even is a form of a corporate social responsibility in some ways. By making small beautiful packages, making affordable certain products, they enable the goods and services that are needed to be acquired, within the reach of a greater number of people. This , too goes back to business in a form of revenue cushion effect. Business may have slowed down with declining revenues, but still it is there for the long-term, as the population continues to increase, assuming that population growth, being a major economic factor has not been stopped or is not in the negative growth level. Can you imagine what would happen to an economy, when there are no more people buying goods and services, because they have gone old or are declining in number towards extinction like the several protected animal, birds or plant species we often hear about? Businesses need buyers of their goods and services! Without a growing populace, who would buy from businesses? Naturally, eventually none! No wonder, the Church is very much against population negative growth rate, and much in favor of population increase at a controlled progression. Shouldn’t businesses therefore support the Church on this?

It is still true that there is strength in number. A family or a country, therefore that has the numbers would eventually have more working hands, and would help strengthen the economy. Let business therefore adopt this perspective in the long term and let businesses and countries survive a hundred more years or so! Amazingly, the mandate of “…go out and multiply, still is ever true to date! Over populating the earth is not a thing to worry about. It really is depopulating the earth that is going to be a threat to businesses and the future. The natural check and balance of nature will take its own accord in the long run, and man’s extinction is prevented by a controlled increase in population, not depopulation. It is good for businesses, and the more hands and brains that continue to be available with an increasing population and continual rejuvenation of mankind, should be used and guided accordingly to make the much needed contributions in keeping the economy and businesses move forward. Let this idea therefore change the paradigm of every business enterprise and organizations for the future.

Believing and having Faith in God’s healing power!
In the past, I have attended and have also watched on television sets Prayer Rallies for the healing of the sick, and I saw some people claimed that they were healed. The lame were able to walk, people fell asleep in prayer (termed “slain” sometimes), and others say they experience an unexplained kind of peace from within. I do believe there is that power in God to heal people, but whether or not those who were healed in prayer rallies were truly healed always cast some doubts to observers and spectators alike, since the feeling of healing is experienced only by the person who got healed, plus the possibility of someone being a prop or was just put up by some enterprising persons.

I can tell you however, that when you experience yourself the healing power of God, there is no way that you would not believe and talk about it. In the first place, belief is required in order to be healed. Unless you do believe that you can be healed by God, I don’t see how it can happen to you that you be healed. I was sick at one point in time for several days, and I decided to call on the healing power of God on myself, and almost instantaneously, believing on the promises of Psalm 91, I got what I asked for. In my prayer to God, I requested that I be healed, as if it was the time when Christ was doing his public life on earth, wherein people were instantly cured, and I was healed.

Do you want to experience the same healing power of God? Pray and ask for it unceasingly, and believe in what God can do to you. Ask for the forgiveness of your sins and believe that you can be healed, and amen I say to you, that you will be healed instantly and permanently.

The Daily Routine of Church Attendance is Not Enough! Have Faith in God’s Plans…

When we speak of a routine, it means, it is done repetitively on a regular basis. It could be daily , weekly, monthly, etc. It can be something done in a usual way. It is the normal thing for a person to do on a particular time slot or span/period of time. In the process, there is a risk that things, become purely mechanistic and done with little thoughts, commitment, and presence of mind and heart. In some cases, it becomes memorization without understanding or reflection of what is being said. It is true in prayers that have been pre-written and memorized. It is true with songs and poetry reading without understanding. The feeling or spirit of the statement is lost. It becomes like a broken record. A parrot-like action or gesture. A mere mechanical movement. It is sad to note , therefore that we see this everyday thing happen. People for example make a daily routine to Church services attendance, presumably to talk to his God; to pray; to nurture and learn what is Faith, Hope and Love. And yet, when the test of time comes, we see and realize that there is a glaring lack of Faith, Hope and Love, if not total absence. There can even be a discovery that there is lack of understanding of a relationship with God. Isn’t it time for us to examine ourselves on this matter? Are we doing things mechanically? Do we really have the true Faith in God that we need to have?- the commitment in belief and Hope that God Who is all knowing, forever present, and all Powerful is our ultimate refuge and caregiver. That, His saving grace, and Love for us will always be there? Many break down at the test of Faith in God’s Loving care. We tend to command God to act in accordance to what our wishes are, and not rely on His plans for us. We were told not to worry about the material things in this world. That God has always provided for even the least of His creatures has already been taught and promised to us. That even the grass, the flowers and the birds have been provided. How much more for us?-the creatures that were made in His image and likeness. Have Faith my friends. Have Hope in God’s saving mercy, and be filled with His great Love. Worry not for the material things of this world, for they will be provided according to our needs in due time. God is always on time. He is never late nor negligent. Just toil, as we were ordered, after the fall of Adam & Eve…. The rest, should then be left to God’s discretion. So, when you make your next prayer, your next church service, your next visit to the Church, make sure you understand what you are doing. That you put things with proper thoughts and presence of mind and body. That you don’t command God to do as you wish, like asking from the genie of Alladin and his lamp. Pray and ask humbly, and tell God that you have your wants and wishes, but His will will always be done.

Who is my brother? Who is my mother?
In one of the situations in the life of Jesus Christ, He was busy one day lecturing to the people, who was either following him or just plainly being curious and inquisitive. Then, He was told that His mother and brothers were outside the room where he was and was seeking out for Him? Then the account in the Bible, indicated that Christ looked towards everybody and asked them, “Who is my brother? Who is my mother?” The pre-condition then given was that, whoever does the things or tasks given by His Father in heaven, are His brothers, and mother.

Mankind obviously is a big family. They are brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers to each other. Man has been exhorted to love one another, and love each other as one loves himself… “Love thy neighbor as you love yourself.” –says the commandment. In everything we do, we therefore need to consider this; and remember, the brotherhood of men always transcends the sovereignty of nations…and that service to humanity is the best work of life.

Now that the country elections in the Philippines have been done with, we fervently hope that the new leaders will be given all the support they need from all sectors, to carry out their plans and programs for their respective areas of responsibilities, that reconciliation be the first agenda for all the opposing parties, and that the whole nation be united in working towards a better and more progressive country. The challenges of improving the economy, eradicating poverty, and giving jobs and income for the grass roots level is so great, so that there is really no room for continuing bickerings, and non-performing activities as we all move towards the successful accomplishment of the important tasks for nation building.

When things are beyond your control…
One of the things that is considered in business as an important rule is to be in control or to be on top of everything that takes place in the business. This explains, why there is such thing as a hierarchical organization, and division of labor, and one head for every seven sub-heads or whatever is the adopted number of grouping per policy choices. But is being always in control, possible? Well, strictly speaking, it can be a yes and a no. No, not everything that happens is within the control of an individual leader. But, perhaps, it’s a “yes” that the outcome can still be controlled, given enough action and counter-measures done to cope with an emergent changes in events, especially the unexpected ones. This may require a lot of wisdom, experience, perception, stamina, perseverance, and knowledge of the system resources that are available.

How kids learn…don’t relinquish your parental roles…
We often pride ourselves with our efforts to educate our kids, and we do our best to send them to schools that are known for their good facilities and excellent credentials of teachers/professors. There are things, that we should take note in this regard, however. I noted that in some schools, if not all, the influence of peers and peer pressures play a lot. Children do not learn only from their teachers and school administrators. They also learn from all the people around them. In fact, in many cases, children learn more from their classmates and schoolmates than from their teachers, when it comes to socialization, and human inter-action. Teachers normally stay within their subject matter, and spend little time on the personal relations of kids. Besides, there is only one teacher for several kids during classes. They are busy, too and they have their own problems as well. No wonder, the peer pressures and influences of people around them and outside the classrooms are playing a greater role in their learning process. Do we have programs in the school campuses that help our kids develop good characters? I think so. The supervision and discipline of kids as practiced before, however, have changed a lot. I went to a sectarian school from elementary school through college, and I noticed, that the kind of school supervision over the students, have mellowed down over the years. In one PTA (Parents and Teachers Association) meeting I attended as a parent, I learned from the school administrators that they believe the kids will soar to greater heights with the removal of the old school ways, and giving the kids more freedom. Are we finding these principles more effective and more sound than the old ways? I don’t think so. I think, we have produced just as good students before, as we have them now, if not better. In view of this, I believe that values and character training should more be developed stronger at home now than in school. If kids have the proper rearing at home, and if parents spend more time with their kids, they would more likely withstand the inappropriate influences outside the home. The school as many have thought of before, is not the main place of character development support for kids under the present scenario. Parents now have more to do with kids than what it used to be. Parents should therefore not relinquish parental roles to educational institutions. People there are just as busy as parents are.

Would you believe that there are countries where men use more cosmetics than their wives? It is also surprising to know that some countries are consuming more spaghetti than their Italian counterparts. Certain things could not, therefore be generalized. In the food distribution service, it is worthwhile to note that some countries prefer the taste of food to be sweet. In others, sweet is a no no. Simple things can or may undo a great marketing campaign. In this regard, one can not easily dismiss the need for a substantive and accurate market research, when entering or expanding into a new market. While there may be no need to organize an in house department for market research, an expert on this matter could be hired to liaise with marketing research companies and data holders. Nevertheless, it is advised that one does not just dive into a market niche without a good market study that tells you more than enough for your requirement.

Fetching the water!
I was reading the work of a very well known writer, and in one of the lines, he mentioned that “one does not drill and fetch water, when one is already thirsty.” The drilling of course is done way, way ahead of time, and this is what you call adequate provisions for the needed lead time. Are we aware of this principle or are we leaving things to chance? I hope that you are conscious of this principle, and factors in lead time and an adequate planning horizon in your project activities. Place the roof even before the rainy days, and you shall enjoy being out of the rain as much as you want it to be.

Fasting in the midst of plenty!
It is now Holy Wednesday in my largely Christian country, and we are celebrating again the passion of Christ. My brother just texted on my cell-phone that it is good to do fasting as he doesn’t have enough resources for basic needs. I told him that fasting is really voluntary. If one asks for blessings and resources daily, it will surely come daily, be it in big and small amounts, but surely it will come. God is never late in providing. He is always on time and on schedule. He knows what is artificial need, and what is real need. So, one must ask daily, and live daily as indicated in the Lord’s prayer taught by no less than Christ himself. If you pray everyday, you will be provided everyday, and fasting will be purely on your own volition. One can do fasting even in the midst of plenty, if one so desires for the love of God.

The thing called Honesty!
When kids were told, “honesty is the best policy!”, could they have possibly doubted that maxim, when it was taught? Most probably not. All of us went through childhood days, and probably must have heard of this policy, too. Were you ever skeptical about the doctrine? Now that we have grown up, can we honestly say this very same thing to our kids, without an iota of doubt? I hope we still can. Where there is inconsistency between doctrine and practices, it indicates that society is in conflict against itself. It indicates a moral and values deterioration. I once came across a movement, that made pronounce-ments to bring back Christ-like actions of impeccable character to the very center of business and society. I hope, this is still true today, and will continue to spread virally thru the very core of large and small business institutions alike.

Kids and the street curfew!
One of the best ways to keep children away from the bad influence of other kids, and their non-wholesome activities is to keep kids busy in school and to take them out of the streets, by imposing a curfew after school, and keep them busy with their assignments or household responsibilities. Most kids who are often out in the streets for a long time, end up being influenced by street boys and girls much more and learn many things that they should not be doing at their young age. Bad habits are difficult to change, so take care that these are not learned by young kids.

How do we know that you are a big fan of a publisher or a blogger? …Right! You must let him know, you are a big fan of his, and that you are subscribing to his blog. You can post your approval by telling him through your own social networks. By spreading the word through word of mouth and sharing his blogs to others. By making comments to his discussions over google and yahoo, etc. when you see them. Why is this important? Letting your favorite author/ publisher know that he got some followers, encourages him to do more quality blogs for you through feedback mechanisms.

Achieving Plans and Goals!
There are times when our planned activities for the day get off tracked, because of so many distractions. I remember my former senior officer telling me not to entertain every walked-in subordinate, and to schedule my meetings with them. That is somewhat ideal actually in favor of time management, but just make sure, you do not put off certain meetings with subordinates, when you know these are about matters that can’t wait. It is normal that plans get off tracked everyday, especially when many people want to get hold of you being around for a meeting. Eventually, however, you would recognize a pattern of events. As you see, there are patterns as always in almost all events. As others would say, “there is order in chaos, somehow.” It actually depends from what stand point you are viewing the situation. So what is the next thing to do then? Just keep correcting your course like a ship or a plane. As you are being drawn off tracked, you must correct your course to be back on track and never lose sight of your objectives. Then plan better in such a way as to consider every distraction that could be ahead of you. Soon, you will have a better handle of things. Not perfectly always at first, but much better than before, until things get better accomplished. Just don’t set your goals unrealistically. As you gain more expertise in anticipating things, you will always achieve your daily goals.

The Marathon run!
When the going is rough, only the tough gets going! Isn’t that right? Well, you may not be tough at all times, but I assure you, that if there is a good reason for you to get going or if there is no choice, you find yourself on the go. This is true for people with high adversity quotients, but people with very low adversity quotients, might end up to be down and broken in spirit, and simply quit the race, if it were an Olympic marathon run.

When you are angry!
When you are really, really mad at somebody, try to rationalize your next moves. Do not do anything without thinking rationally. Hold your temper, and move on to do other things that will divert your attention from the hot issue to improve your mood; so that you do not act according to your prevailing emotions. There are really people , who can annoy you, but if you decide not to be affected by them, you really can do it. Try it for yourself. Decide not to be angry, and no one can make you react to a situation, such that you become angry.

Working for the Best!
When you do some work, you do not have to be a perfectionist. You only need to be at par with what can be called an excellent job. Some situations require a rocket science type of quality job. Others, a lot less. So, there is no need to use a large hammer for a small application, nor a big stick, when all you need is a toothpick. When reading a pocket book for enjoyment, you can read faster than usual. When you need to study for mastery of certain scientific principles in physics, you need to read slower perhaps, and spend more time. You may even read the same book chapter several times. Learn therefore to save your time and energy by adjusting your efforts according to what is necessary, and relevant. Don’t overdo something that doesn’t have to be. Be a good judge therefore of what kind of effort is needed for each activity you encounter. Remember, you got plenty of things to cover as a Leader, and your best may not be the solution to a problem. But, you have to do what is best for each situation.

Listen first!
When a person is sick and goes to see a doctor of medicine, the doctor would observe the patients vital signs, and would ask the patient what he feels, which part of the body is painful, or when the ailment was noticed to have started. The patient would tell the doctor the answers being sought, from the view point of the patient. The doctor would then make his evaluation, and only then will he make his prescriptions and suggestions on what medicine the patient should take, the dosage and what to do and not do. Similarly, we should be like a doctor when handling our kids. When we observe and see that there seems to be something wrong with our kids, based on their actions, and changes in routines, manners and grades, we should ask them what is bothering them before we make our evaluation, conclusions that they are grounded, and prescriptions or suggestions. It is not the other way around (the reversed process). You must listen to your kids first. Pure hunch or guess work is not acceptable. Verification is important, and observations validation is necessary.

Expressing that Love you may never have said so often!
When was the last time you told your wife that you love her? When was the last time you told your kid, and your mom, and your Dad, that you love them? If that last time was too long ago, tell them now again. It is not difficult to tell them these very same words at every opportunity you got, which can be everyday. Some people know that you love them, but telling them, is nice for them to hear, and very assuring for them. In the first place, not everyone can read your mind, and some actions can have many interpretations. When we need specificity, telling is one way of going as near as what you’ve always wanted to say.

Reality!
While a well known book indicates the benefits of being able to recognize and give importance to our fellowmen, and many men in business are aware of this, surprisingly, many among us do just the opposite. Isn’t it tantamount to committing a sin of omission, by not exercising our capability to give importance to others? Let’s keep in mind the effects of a genuine appreciation and enable people around us bring to realization their desire to be important in the real world, instead of having them live in a world of insanity.
