Tomorrow we are expecting a frost which has all the regional farmers harvesting their most vulnerable crops. We are expecting a giant CSA box and then will be cooking and preparing food to last. It was an incredible summer. We did not know what to expect and this community really came together to keep people safe and allow for a lively season without festivals. People drove in in droves and the town was set up for outdoor everything. I am not sure if it ever (maybe a few times) rained during dinner time. There was music on main street. The real estate market boomed in the entire region as I think Telluride has been officially discovered. What comes next we do not know but we can count on freezing temperatures on Tuesday night. Fall is actually my favorite season and there will be many summer-like days and cold nights as seasons collide.

It has so far been a great summer in Telluride. We had a spectacular 4th of July with a great turnout for the parade and an epic fireworks display. Summer is in full swing with many visitors who are enjoying the splendid weather by spending much of it outdoors. The wild flowers this year are especially gorgeous. Town park is hopping and the kids are running around free range. We do get back to the office after our swim, run, or bike ride, so please drop by and say hello. Telluride Schools are canceled today.  We have so much snow and it keeps coming.  All the kids are on the hill currently.  The mountain had to delay openings of most of the lifts.  I saw a car stuck on each block of the alley and my dog and I blazed a trail on the river trail.  Telluride is snow globe city and we have had one of the best ski seasons in recent memory.  This bodes well for summer too.  We have a 104 inch base and more snow in the forecast.  There are many people here for spring break and plenty of powder for everyone.

In 1994 Kandee Degraw and Robert Presley were having a beer at the Sheridan and Robert, who was battling AIDS, was frustrated by the cost of his treatment.  They came up with a plan to create a benefit for the Western Colorado AIDS Project (WestCap) which consisted of a fashion show of designs made of household items, inflatable pool toys, cellophane, and everything free box.  My friend reminded me, we once created a dress made of lift tickets, must have been 1998 ish?  The fashion show is a highlight of the winter and now includes the lines of big name fashion designers, and a production of lights, music, and models that rivals New York.  Even now, though, the show stays with its roots in its wearable art creations, submitted by artists who are encouraged to be Big, Bold, and Funky.  Expect the unexpected with this year’s theme:  metallics.  Truly a collaborative, community event, the Telluride Aids Benefit includes locals and visitors coming together for an unforgettable experience.  Raising millions of dollars, 85% of TAB’s donations benefit Colorado.  Here is a list of their beneficiaries:  WESTCAP, Western Colorado Clinic, CHIP, Brother Jeff’s, Red Ribbon, Moab Clinic, Ethiopian Family Fund, Manzini Youth Care.  A free spirited, inclusive event meant to help people with a serious disease as well as preventing its spread to future generations. Recently, we attended a presentation at the Wilkinson Public Library, a hub of educational and community activity, by Bob Baer, former CIA case officer. Our office is located just steps away from the veranda where the talk occurred. The talk was sponsored by Telluride TV another dynamic, local organization. Bob spoke about the Russian controversy and it was fascinating. The turnout was great and the crowd was genuinely concerned while the energy was not contentious. Our community fosters open discussions about ideas and current events. I was interested to hear in person our neighbors and our visitors opinions, regarding this nationally relevant news story.

In addition to the Bob Baer talk, Telluride TV reminded us of their services. What do they do? “Telluride TV provides a voice for the community through media arts education, community based content, and access to broadcasting.” This non-profit organization started in 1986 by broadcasting town council meetings in pursuit of government transparency. You can view their programs on Channel 12 or on youtube. This local access channel offers programming by filmmakers and videographers from the local community as well as outside independent producers. Telluride TV also captures historical archives of events in Telluride including: festivals, performances, presentations, and government and school board meetings. With a community media center located in the Telluride Middle/High School,Telluride TV offers services to the community. Video camera & editing courses and production services are open to the public. As an example, here is a video featuring the Earth Guardians. This group of 4th graders had the idea to write and perform their own script to help protect the environment. Telluride TV produced and distributed their video.  It was such an enriching and educational experience for our daughter and many other local kids.

Since 1986 our community access television has documented the Telluride experience. Telluride TV organizes not only venues to see nationally recognized speakers, it also has archived years of memories of local flavor.

So, yesterday, as far as I could tell, there was no rain in sight. I said to Jack, “it’s Jazz; it’s gonna rain”. The rain came . What a beautiful thing. We remember when the Jazz Festival organizers changed the dates because Jazz was always so rainy. But I believe that those earlier summer days proved to be rainy as well. So, the dates for the Telluride Jazz Festival moved back to their original early August dates. It seemed the rain followed the Telluride Jazz festival audience no matter when they came to town. But it seems the regular attendees don’t mind the rain. The daily showers are always welcome relief and they seem to linger a little longer during Jazz Festival weekend. It is a feature not a flaw. So, bring a raincoat and a sunhat because the changing weather seems to be perfectly orchestrated to the sounds and moods of Jazz. If it’s not your rhythm, just wait ten minutes.

The immersive live experience coupled with the beauty of an alpine setting, makes the Telluride Jazz Festival a top ranking music experience. For four decades Telluride has hosted historical performances by nationally touring acts in the great outdoors by day and in velvety venues by night. Like previous years, the lineup this year will not disappoint. This year’s lineup includes Bruce Hornsby and the Noismakers, Irma Thomas, Soul Queen of New Orleans, and Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe. The relaxed vibe encourages audiences to let loose and dance, while others kick back in a chair while they listen. Festival attendees can also enjoy an array of food and beer and wine in the park. At night the music flows through town where artists collaborate at various clubs all within walking distance. Sunday morning begins with a Second Line brass band parade down Main Street. Summer Festival Season In Telluride Begins with Mountain Film.  The festival turns 40 this year and the organizers announce the 2018 Lineup. As the film festival has grown, it has remained true to its mission.  Now the films are more diverse, ranging  from environmental challenges to issues of social injustice.  Thus, we see the common thread of environmentalism connect the love of outdoor adventure to activism.  The Mountain Film experience includes interactive talks, free community events, a gallery walk, outdoor programming and presentations, and the result will inspire audiences to action on worthy causes.

I, myself, am thrilled to see in the line up: RBG. This is a documentary on Ruth Bader Ginsburg who has been a champion of equal rights decisions. She is 84, a woman who has pushed our culture closer to gender equality, and her voice is more relevant than ever. In fact, she has become a hero of our time.  Through the film, we learn how she first fought for her own equality and has over the years used the law to disassemble an overt system of gender discrimination.  Because Jack and I have three daughters, we hope to see this film that is sure to inspire.

Telluride is a place where you can leave your car and walk, bike, hike, paddle down the San Miguel, or just sit outside and chat over coffee with the locals.  Many people come to Telluride because they love the great outdoors.  However, many stay for the diverse cultural and social experiences that occur in a steady stream over the summer.  Mountain Film is the official kick off of the summer.  We welcome the festival’s attendees and congratulate the Mountain Film organizers on their 40^th anniversary. Film Festival is here!

Time to get your program, your coffee, and lanyard and watch some films. The leaves on the trees are just starting to change.  The clouds rolled in with some refreshing rain.  It’s time to catch a glimpse of a celebrity or two.  But even with the Telluride Film Festival’s growing popularity, it is still low-key.  The film festival here is all about the films and has a great record for premiering Oscar winning films.  This article in the LA Times lists all the films featured in the 2017 Telluride Film Festival.

• The ‘Conversations’ in the County Courthouse are free
• The four film screenings — one each night — in the Open Air Cinema are free
• The three ‘Filmmakers of Tomorrow’ programs are free
• Films at the Backlot, located in the Library are free
• The LATE SHOW PASS, the last film at two different theatres each day, four films for $75. This is quite a bargain, bearing in mind that individual film tickets cost $30 each.
