American oil crashes below $0 for the first time in history!

2020-04-20T20:45:00.001+01:00

U.S. oil prices plummeted in historic fashion Monday, crashing below zero as traders unloaded positions ahead of the May contract's Tuesday expiration.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil futures for May delivery cratered by 305 percent to -$36.73 a barrel. At a price below zero, buyers would be paid to take delivery as there are costs associated with transportation and storage. The selling had WTI on track to close at its lowest level since recordkeeping began in March 1983, according to Dow Jones Market Data.

Buyers flock to gold coins amid stock market turbulence caused by coronavirus

2020-03-28T02:16:00.001+01:00

Collectors and investors appear to have flocked to gold coins as a safe haven buy amid stock market turbulence caused by coronavirus, with some at a behind closed doors auction this week selling for triple their estimate.

More than 500 lots of coins dating from the Iron Age all the way through to 2008 went under the hammer at auction house Spink, selling from anything from £30 to £65,000.

Coronavirus outbreak crashing oil prices

2020-02-04T15:28:00.001+01:00

Crude oil has crashed into yet another bear market on fears that the coronavirus outbreak will destroy demand in China, the world's largest crude importer.

US oil tumbled another 2.8% on Monday and briefly broke below $50 a barrel for the first time since January 2019. Crude finished at $50.11 a barrel, leaving it down nearly 21% from the recent closing high of $63.27 a barrel on January 6. A bear market is frequently defined as a drop of more than 20% from previous highs.

Energy markets have been clobbered by the rapid spread of the coronavirus, which has killed more than 360 people and infected more than 17,000 around the world. The virus has also caused countless flight cancellations and brought parts of the Chinese economy to a standstill.

The scope of the ban is sketchy at the moment, but clearly stated is that:

The restrictions will take effect on February 22
Trump administration claims countries added to the list did not meet specific security criteria
Issuance of visas that can lead to permanent residency WILL be suspended
Non-immigrant visas (visit, business and student), designated refugees, and temporary workers are EXEMPT from the restrictions
'Some' applicants will be able to apply for waivers from the restrictions

President Trump on Friday added six countries to his list of nations facing stringent travel restrictions, a move that will virtually block immigration from Africa’s most populous nation, Nigeria, and from Myanmar, where the Muslim minority is fleeing genocide. ...CONTINUE

Now that United Kingdom has left the European Union

2020-02-01T04:27:00.000+01:00

Brexit has happened. After 1,316 days of political turmoil, the UK now stands alone as the first nation to have ever left the European Union.

It has ended the careers of two Prime Ministers and left the very future of the United Kingdom in question. Scotland's case for independence is becoming harder to ignore while Britain's perceived selling out of Northern Ireland has played into the hands of those wishing to see Irish unification.
That's just the politics: Britain's economic future and place in the world have not been this uncertain since the end of the World War II.

Speaking to the nation an hour before Brexit finally happened, Prime Minister Boris Johnson acknowledged that the country was divided: "For many people this is an astonishing moment of hope, a moment they thought would never come. And there are many of course who feel a sense of anxiety and loss ... I understand all those feelings, and our job as the government -- my job -- is to bring this country together now and take us forward."

WHO declares Coronovirus outbreak a global emergency

2020-01-31T02:26:00.002+01:00

The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on Thursday that it was declaring the deadly coronavirus outbreak spreading from China to be a global health emergency.

The warning, officially known as a 'public health emergency of international concern' and defined as an 'extraordinary event', is the highest alert the UN health agency can issue.

'The main reason for this declaration is not for what is happening in China but because of what is happening in other countries,' Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General, said at a press conference.

'Our greatest concern is for the potential for the virus to spread to countries with weaker health systems, which are ill prepared to deal with it.'

#CoronaVirusOutbreak: All You Need To Know About CoronaVirus

2020-01-31T01:43:00.000+01:00

A coronavirus is a kind of common virus that causes an infection in your nose, sinuses, or upper throat.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (Sars) and Middle Eastern respiratory syndrome (Mers) are both caused by coronaviruses that came from animals. Although Mers is believed to be transmitted to humans from dromedaries, the original hosts for both coronaviruses were probably bats. In 2002, Sars spread virtually unchecked to 37 countries, causing global panic, infecting more than 8,000 people and killing more than 750. Mers appears to be less easily passed from human to human, but has greater lethality, killing 35% of about 2,500 people who have been infected.

The Wuhan Corona Virus

In early 2020, following a December 2019 outbreak in China, the World Health Organization identified a new type, 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) – a member of the coronavirus family that has never been encountered before. Like other coronaviruses, it has come from animals. Many of those infected either worked or frequently shopped in the Huanan seafood wholesale market in the centre of the Chinese city, which also sold live and newly slaughtered animals. New and troubling viruses usually originate in animal hosts. Ebola and flu are examples.

Human to human transmission has been confirmed by China’s national health commission.

Cryptocurrency fund boss dies with passwords to unlock clients' $190 million

2019-02-05T17:10:00.003+01:00

by: Armina Ligaya

Canada's largest cryptocurrency exchange Quadriga is due in court Tuesday as it seeks creditor protection in the wake of the sudden death of its founder and chief executive in December and missing cryptocurrency worth roughly $190-million.

The Vancouver-based exchange filed an application for creditor protection on Jan. 31 and the Nova Scotia Supreme Court will be asked on Feb. 5 to appoint a monitor to oversee the proceedings, according to a post on its website, which has been otherwise shut down.

Quadriga owes $70 million in currency and an additional amount of cryptocurrency valued at approximately $180 million, based on market prices in December, to roughly 115,000 users, it said in its application.

Some have very large balances, with the largest affected user claim reportedly valued at approximately $70 million, court filings show.

Users have very little recourse to recover those funds, said Christine Duhaime, a lawyer and founder of the Digital Finance Institute.

Most assume the typical Bitcoin user is young, with money to burn, but the average age is closer to 45 years old, she added.

"People have emailed me and called me saying they've lost their retirement money... Because (Quadriga) have been around for so long and they were the largest exchange in Canada, I think people thought their money was safe."

The online exchange launched in December 2013 and the platform allowed its users to deposit cash or cryptocurrency with Quadriga.

Court documents show that Quadriga had been facing liquidity issues over the past year but a major issue arose in January 2018 when CIBC froze roughly $25.7 million of its funds held in the account of a third-party processor.

"Without access to the Affected Funds, Quadriga was unable to satisfy withdraw requests of users resulting in significant delays for users receiving funds from Quadriga," it said in the application.

Court filings show that after his death, Quadriga employees have been unable to locate or access cryptocurrencies worth roughly $190-million. Employees tried to access cryptocurrency within Quadriga's "cold" wallets, a system which stores cryptocurrencies offline to avoid hacking, such as on USB sticks or electronic hardware not connected to the internet.

"Quadriga was unable to access the cold wallets and/or discovered that the cold wallets contained minimal cryptocurrency units," it said in court filings.

Cotten's widow Jennifer Robertson said she was not involved in the business while he was alive and the laptop which he used is encrypted.

"I do not know the password or recovery key," she said in an affidavit. "Despite repeated and diligent searches, I have not been able to find them written down anywhere."

She also said that there have been threats made against her and there has been a "significant amount of commentary on Reddit and other web based platforms about the state of Quadriga, Gerry's death (including whether he is really dead) and missing coins."

Is it too late to invest in gold?

2016-08-18T21:33:00.001+01:00

By Paul Thomas

Savers are rushing to put money into gold as fears grow over the state of the global economy.

Figures from investment brokers show the amount being pumped into gold investments this month is around three times as high as a year ago.

The World Gold Council says that demand hit record highs in the first half of 2016 — and the Royal Mint enjoyed a surge in customers when the Bank of England cut interest rates at the beginning of August.

Investors tend to flock to gold in times of uncertainty because it is seen as a safe haven that will hold its value.

Brazilian police smash ISIS plan for terror attacks on Rio Olympics; ...10 arrested

2016-07-21T18:30:00.000+01:00

Brazil's federal police today arrested 10 people and smashed a network allied to ISIS that was preparing 'acts of terrorism' at next month's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

President Michel Temer has called an emergency cabinet meeting and Justice Minister Alexandre de Moraes said the operation spanned nine states across Brazil, although the arrests were made in the southern states of Sao Paulo and Parana.

A court in Parana said there were indications the group was planning to use weapons to launch attacks similar to the Paris atrocities in November last year.

Revenge? Ted Cruz’s Betrayal of Donald Trump Was Brilliant

2016-07-21T07:42:00.004+01:00

Going in to Wednesday night, Ted Cruz intentionally left people wondering what the meaning and the subtext of his prime-time Republican National Convention speech would be: Would he endorse Trump? Come close to endorsing Trump? Or would he largely ignore Trump and talk about ideas he wants to see vindicated eventually in our politics?

In the end he did not endorse Trump, nor did he come particularly close. He did talk about some ideas (abstractions, mostly, but ideas nonetheless) that defined conservatism in the pre-Trump era. But none of these was his main objective.

2016-07-16T19:55:00.002+01:00

Turkish authorities detained thousands of military and judicial personnel on Saturday after the government declared it had successfully resisted an attempt by armed forces officers to stage a coup.

The arrests marked an apparent clampdown within the state as the government of elected President Recep Tayyip Erdogan attempted to project an image of complete control. The roundup followed a chaotic night in which about 200 people died in violence around the country after military officers announced they had seized power.

A group within Turkey's military has attempted to overthrow the government and security forces have been called in to "do what is necessary", Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Friday.

"Some people illegally undertook an illegal action outside of the chain of command," Yildirim said in comments broadcast by private channel NTV. "The government elected by the people remains in charge. This government will only go when the people say so."Those behind the attempted coup would pay the highest price, he added.

America at war with itself

2016-07-08T23:03:00.000+01:00

Now Dallas: a shameful attack on the rule of law itself, with five officers dead and seven wounded in the course of duty during what had been a peaceful protest against police violence in America.

And so many difficult but important questions arise. What have we become? Are we a people at war with ourselves, unable or unwilling to control our most violent urges? Must we settle every dispute with a gun or a bomb? Who is responsible for this mayhem that plays out on many fronts?

Some cops will always be racist, some cops will always make mistakes and some people will always be full of hate – but if America wasn’t awash with guns it wouldn’t have to be a bloodbath

I feel sickened.

Sickened by the appalling execution of Alton Sterling in Louisiana on Tuesday.

Sickened by the appalling execution of Philando Castile in Minnesota on Wednesday.

Sickened by the appalling executions of five police officers in Dallas last night.

Sickened by the endless tide of gun violence destroying so many lives in America, fuelled by the country’s ever-increasing paranoia about guns which makes so many people so trigger-happy.

Canada to lift visa requirement for Mexican visitors

2016-06-28T23:46:00.001+01:00

Mexicans will soon be able to travel to Canada without a visa. And they might actually want to, as newly elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau makes strides to improve strained relations between the two countries.

“Justin Trudeau confirmed he has given his cabinet instructions to in the future remove the requisite of Canadian visas for Mexicans,” an upbeat President Enrique Peña Nieto tweeted this week. The symbolic measure promises to hit the restart button on strained Mexico-Canada diplomacy.

Pound fell to its lowest since 1985 after Britain vote to leave EU

2016-06-24T07:59:00.001+01:00

Britian’s vote to leave the European Union battered the British pound by more than 11% Thursday night and into Friday morning, pushed down stocks in Asia and pointed to a day of steep falls across the world’s financial markets. It was a brutal drubbing for investors who had stacked up bets that the U.K. would choose to stay.

The pound traded as low as $1.3230 in London’s early hours, as a pink-fringed dawn rose over the city and the British Broadcasting Corp. called the referendum for Leave. That was the lowest level against the dollar since 1985, and an epic move for a developed-market currency. The pound edged back up and was at $1.36 by 7 a.m. Just hours before, it had peaked above $1.50. Futures markets in the U.S. pointed to the S&P 500’s opening down 5%; in Britain they indicated a fall in the benchmark stock index of nearly 9%.
