The first thing that caught attention was people dressed in brightly colored traditional Czech attire at the Czech Feszt in Miller Park on Saturday.
At the classic car show people gathered around the 1969 emerald green Ford Mustang Mach I owned by Butch Moore of Temple. Another car that gathered interest was the 1925 Willy's Overlander Model 91 owned by Michael and Gretchen Allen of Belton.

"We had a cold front, or as we call it here in Texas, a norther, came rolling in today with strong north winds bringing in some much cooler weather," Andy Andersen KCEN-DT chief meteorologist, said.

Thursday's temperature at 11:35 a.m. registered at 88 degrees, on Friday morning at the same time the temperature had dropped to 54 degrees. The high for the day was expected to be in the 60s, but temperatures at Draughton-Miller Airport only got up to 55 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

Hundreds mourn the Cameron soldier who saved his comrades

CAMERON - When the casket carrying the body of 2nd Lt. Darryn Deen Andrews left the First Baptist Church on Saturday, three small boys were riding by on their bicycles. As soon as they saw the honor guard and a number of police and firefighters waiting to escort the hearse, they dropped their bicycles, removed their caps and put their hands over their hearts.
It seemed an entire town had come out to mourn the loss of Andrews, who the Rev. Bill Gravell Jr. described as a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a friend and a soldier.

SALADO - An exhausted Salado fire chief said that cleaning up after Saturday's flood would probably start next week when the water starts to recede.
“Some of the residents started doing some of their own cleanup because the insurance companies send in companies to help,” Charles Young said. “The quicker they get into the residential, the less damage they have.”

SALADO - Firey rhetoric and passionate signs dominated Saturday’s TEA Party in Salado where more than a thousand people used the Taxed Enough Already forum to protest President Barack Obama’s health care reform initiative.
Rayford Brown, an advocate for the group, said there was a lack of Democrats at the town hall meeting because they are “statist” - what Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary describes as “the concentration of economic controls and planning in the hands of a highly centralized government often extending to government ownership of industry.”

Temple man shot and killed: Third death from violence in the city in the last two months

The shooting death of a 36-year-old man early Thursday morning marks the third violent death in Temple in the last two months. That has some residents worried, but Temple police say these aren’t random shootings because their investigations lead them to believe the victims and killers knew each other.
Vaughn Wattley, 36, of Temple was the latest shooting victim. When police drove up to the 1100 block of South Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in response to a report of shots fired shortly after 1:30 a.m., they found Wattley on the ground.

Capturing history with a bang: Local residents take part in Dillinger shooting

BELTON - You could be forgiven for believing you were living in another era on Wednesday afternoon as The Beltonian Theatre on Central Avenue was transformed to 1934 for the filming of a re-enactment of the day gangster John Dillinger was gunned down by lawmen.
A banner across the front of the theater announced Clark Gable was starring alongside William Powell and Myrna Loy in “Manhattan Melodrama.” The Beltonian had been transformed to look like the Biograph Theater in Chicago, where on July 22, 1934, Dillinger was shot dead as he left the theater with female companions Polly Hamilton and madam Anna Sage.

City bans overnight watering

Water restrictions for the west side of the city, which has been under Stage 2-W restrictions, are moving back to Stage 1 - voluntary restrictions - beginning today. But the area is not out of the woods just yet. Phasing in the lifting of the restrictions over a three-day period and voluntary compliance will play critical roles in the effectiveness of the plan.
The city is also implementing a citywide no-watering window between 2 a.m. and 8 a.m., seven days a week. The restriction goes into effect immediately and will remain in place until further notice.
