Inavolu (Warangal): The famous Iloni Mallanna Jatara has begun on a grand note here on Saturday. The religious event of historic Inavolu Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple begins on Bhogi, the preceding day of Sankranti festival, and continues till Ugadi, the Telugu New Year.
Lakhs of pilgrims from across the district and neighbouring districts take part in the event and fulfill their vows. Torana Bandhanam, Vigneshwara Pooja, Punyahavachanam, Prajarohana, Mahanyasapurvaka Rudrabhishekam and others will be held to mark the commencement of the jatara.
On Makara Sankranti Day on Sunday Mahanyasapurvaka Ekadasi Rudrabhishekam, Mahanivedana, Mantrapushpam and others will be held at the temple,Inavolu Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple situated at Inavolu village of Vardhannapet mandal in the district is one of the ancient Lord Shiva temples in south India. The temple dates back to 11th century and was built by Kakatiya rulers. It was built with 108 pillars and has a giant magnificent Nruthaya Mandapam on eastern side.
The presiding deity Shivalingam of the temple referred to as ‘Ardhapranavattam’ (Shivalinga with half doom). The temple has four entrance gates with rich architectural carvings that epitomising the cultural sophistication of Kakatiya dynasty.
The temple was built by a minister Ayyanna Deva of Kakatiya Kingdom – hence the name Inavolu. The presiding deity Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy is considered as one of the incarnations of Lord Siva. Mostly the Yadavas patronise the temples built for the deity

" Komuravelli Mallikarjuna Swamy Devasthanam " Temple is believed to be built prior to Kakatiyas around 700 A.D. and developed by Kakatiya rulers. The Unique Keerthi Toranams of Kakatiya style can be seen on the east and southern side of the temple. Komuravelli 'Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Devasthanam' is one of the prominent Siva temples in the northern Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. It is next to Rajarajeshwara Swamy Temple-Vemulawada and Mukteshwara Swamy Temple-Kaaleshwaram in popularity. The pilgrims often refer to the god as 'Komaravelli Mallana'. Komuravelli Mallanna Story- Marriage with Medalamma (based on video song) :

There is no written scriptures are available on komuravelli mallanna (often refered as komurelli mallanna or komrelli mallanna) but there are so many folk lore available on komuravelli mallanna adventures which are said to be “oggu kathalu” sung by “oggu singers” .
In one of the stories it is said that komuravelli mallanna brought pasupu(sacred turmeric) and kumkum from macca (muslims holy place).

The story as follows.

When mallanna wanted to marry medalamma, her brothers puts a condition that mallanna should bring bandari (hard turmeric or roots of turmeric i.e.”pasupu kommulu” which are in the possession of haseen and hussain in macca masjid that time) .
In search of way for bandari komuravelli mallanna approaches God shiva. Lord shiva directs him to Lord Ganesha. Komuravelli mallanna goes to Ganesha and asks him about bandari, Lord Ganesha tells him that Mallanna’s sister “yellamma” knows the way to get it.
Then Komuravelli mallanna goes to yellamma and asks about bandari. Yellamma says that it is in macca. Mallanna prepares to go to macca but his sister “yellamma” warns him that macca is so far from here and men are very powerful there, it is impossible to beat them. They kept those things at a secret place that nobody knows it else them. Whoever went to there, they had not returned. Listening to this mallanna prays to gods, they gave him a flying horse. With that horse mallanna goes to macca. Before getting into makka he ties his horse outside the macca. He joins as gardener there and names himself as malku malloji, he spends so many days there perhaps years. He gains their faith and muslims completely belives him. They tell him the identity of bandari. He goes to the place where it is, A five headed snake protects it. One day he took bandari and tries to run away, but muslims see him and tries to capture him. Mallanna escapes in disguise of a black dog though chased by the duo(haseen and hussain) till the banks of rives Ganga. Goddess ganga looses her right hand when she confronted the duo and mallanna posts a stick as symbol of her hand and resolves to observe a ritual every year in the memory of goddess Ganga river. Then he returns to his hometown with the help of celestial horse. He gives some portion of bandari to yellamma and marries to medalamma.
As I know the ritual which is celebrated on Goddess ganga name is peerila festival. In some of stories, mallanna cuts one of duo hand in fighting and that hand five fingers stands for five peers in the yearly festival.

Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Devasthanam made provisions for the devotees to do online reservations for various pujas, offerings for annadanam and various other sevas. It is believed that the lord has married 'Gollakethamma' from Yadava community and 'Medalamma' from the Linga Balija community and settled here. So, both the goddesses are equally worshiped here. Kuravi veerabhadraswami temple

Sati was the youngest daughter of Daksha, the chief of the gods. When Sati grew up she set her heart on Shiva, worshipping him in secret. In the Swayamvara of Sati, Daksha invited all gods and princes except Shiva. Sati cast her wreath into air, calling upon Shiva to receive the garland; and behold he stood in midst of the court with the wreath about his neck. Daksha had no choice but to get Sati married with Shiva.
One day Daksha made arrangements for a great horse sacrifice, and invited all the gods omitting only Shiva. Sati was enraged by this deliberate exclusion of Shiva and set out to attend, and confront her father Daksha. She instructed her father that Shiva was in fact the Supreme Being of the Universe and demanded her father invite Shiva to no avail. Daksha then went on to insult Shiva; and as Sati's rage at the disrespect toward Shiva peaked, she declared to her father, "I will tolerate no more of your filth" and she released the inner consuming fire, and fell dead at Daksha's feet.
Then Sarvajna Lord Shiva came to know about this incident through meditation and became furious at the non-righteous yagna. Shiva burned with anger, and tore a lock of hair, glowing with energy in Kailasa. At that moment, was born Lord Veerabhadra, the destroyer of Ajnana, sprang from it, his tall body reached the high heavens, he was dark as the clouds, he had a thousand arms, three burning eyes, and fiery hair; he wore a garland of skulls and carried terrible weapons.

Destroy Daksha yagnam :

Shiva directed Virabhadra: "Lead my army against Daksha and destroy his sacrifice; fear not the Brahmanas, for thou art a portion of my very self". On this direction of Shiva, Virabhadra appeared with Shiva's ganas in the midst of Daksha's assembly like a storm and broke the sacrificial vessels, polluted the offerings, insulted the priests and finally cut off Daksha's head, trampled on Indra, broke the staff of Yama, scattered the gods on every side; then he returned to Kailash. When confronted with Vishnu, according to Skanda Purana, Vīrabhadra swallows his chakra and this causes Lord Vishnu to act wisely.

After the destruction of Daksha's sacrifice, the defeated gods sought Brahma and asked his counsel. Brahma advised the gods to make their peace with Shiva. Brahma himself went with them to Mount Kailash. Brahma prayed to lord Shiva to pardon Daksha and to mend the broken limbs of gods and rishis. The compassionate lord(Shiva) took pity on Daksha and restored the burnt head of Daksha with that of a goat's head, and the broken limbs were made whole. Then the devas including Brahma asked the forgiveness of lord Shiva and invited him to the yagna. There Daksha looked on him with reverence, the rite was duly performed, and then all the gods and rishis saluted Shiva and departed to their places.

Sammakka Sarakka Jathara – The Biggest Tribal Festival of Telangana

Sammakka Saralamma Jatara or Medaram Jatara is a tribal festival of honouring the goddesses celebrated in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh, India.The Jatra begins at Medaram in Tadvai Mandal in Warangal district. It commemorates the fight of a mother and daughter, Sammakka and Saralamma, with the reigning rulers against an unjust law. It is believed that after Kumbha Mela, the Medaram jatara attracts the largest number of devotees in the country.

It is celebrated in Medaram during the time the goddesses of the tribals is believed to visit them. Medaram is a remote place in the Eturnagaram Wildlife Sanctuary, a part of Dandakaranya, the largest surviving forest belt in the Deccan.

The story of Samakka Sarakka has history of 700 years when King Prathaparudra of Kakatiya dynasty used to rule the place. The tribals named Koya tribals used to live in that region and once they happened to find a baby girl playing with a tigress in the midst of forest. The mysterious girl was named ‘Sammakka.’ She was radiant having many powers. In her presence the village was flourishing and soon she became popular for her wish granting powers. She was married to headman of the neighboring village and had a daughter named Sarakka.

At one time there occurred a famine for continuous four years and people were not able to pay their taxes. Pagidda Raju, the subordinate ruler to the King Prathaparudra refused to pay tax and this led to war between the two rulers. During this fight the whole tribal community of the village was involved and Sammakka’s husband and daughter were injured by the fighters. Seeing this Sammakka became very furious and fought with warriors with great strength. Seeing fiery power all warriors were shattered and terrorized. She cursed Kakatiya that dynasty will perish and by doing so she disappeared in forest.

Koyas searched for Samakka and but found only bangles and few pug-marks of a tigress. They revered her as goddesses who had great power to protect the village. In due course of time Kakatiya dynasty was invaded and destroyed by Muslims. But even now the village of Medaram and tribals exist. The tribals of this region have been holding the fair in memory of Samakka and her daughter Sarakka to pursue her blessings upon them, seeking her protection.

Celebrations: A large sea of humans is seen at Medaram. Hundreds of buses and thousands of carts head towards the village. Sammakka goddess is brought from village Chilukalagutta and Sarakka is brought from village Kanneboyinapalle, in form of vermilion and placed on a platforms called Gaddelu. Thousands of people take holy dip at the Jampanna vagu before proceeding to the shrines of Sammakka Sarakka.

A special ritual of weighing against jagerry, called as Bangaram, is observed in the jatara where the person offers his weight jaggery to the goddesses. Thousands of cocks and goats are sacrificed on the name of deities. People dress in colorful attires and sing glories of Sammakka and Sarakka. Media and television telecasts the events in the jatara.

Jampanna Vagu :

Jampanna vagu is a tributary to River Godavari. According to the history, Jampanna is the tribal warrior and the son of Tribal Goddess Sammakka. The Jampanna vagu took his name as he died in a battle fighting against Kakatiyan Army in that stream .The Jampanna vagu is still red in colour marked with the blood of Jampanna. Tribal's believe that taking a holy dip in the red water of Jampanna Vagu remembers them the sacrifice of their gods who save them and also induces courage into their souls.

Ramappa Temple also known as the Ramalingeswara temple, is located 77 km from Warangal, the ancient capital of the Kakatiya dynasty, 157 km from Hyderabad in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India. It lies in a valley at Palampet village of Venkatapur Mandal, in erstwhile Mulug Taluq of Warangal district, a tiny village long past its days of glory in the 13th and 14th centuries.An inscription in the temple dates it to the year 1213 and said to have been built by a General Recherla Rudra, during the period of the Kakatiya ruler Ganapati Deva.

Ramappa Temple, constructed in the architectural style of South India during the Kakatiya rule in the 12th century, is a grand old temple dedicated to Lord Shiva in Palampet not far way from Warangal. This temple is revered very much by the Hindu community and is assumed to be the great contribution of the Kakatiya Kings.

Ramappa Temple, placed in a start shaped platform 6 feet high, has a Shivalingam in the sanctum with a sikhara at the mount. A mandapam with a Nandi Idol of 9 foot high, in ruins now, placed at the entrance and many small shrines are placed around the main temple. The temple walls are decorated with impressive carvings, which display epic stories of Ramayana and Mahabharata. The major festival celebrated here is Shivarathri and which day devotees throng to this temple.

Ramappa History :

This medieval temple is a Shivalaya and named after the sculptor Ramappa, a Vishwakarma Brahmin Sthapathi of Karnataka State, who built it rather that after its presiding deity, Ramalingeswara, perhaps to accent Shiva's importance as the personal god of the Avatar of Vishnu, Rama. The history says that it took 40 years to build this temple.
This beautiful temple, an example of brilliant Kakatiya dynasty art, Planned and sculpted by Vishwakarma Brahmin Sthapathis was built on the classical pattern of being lifted above the world on a high star-shaped platform. Intricate carvings line the walls and cover the pillars and ceilings. Starting at its base to its wall panels, pillars and ceiling are sculpted figures drawn from Hindu mythology.The roof (garbhalayam) of the temple is built with bricks, which are so light that they are able to float on water.
The hall in front of the sanctum is filled with exquisitely carved pillars that are placed as to combine light and space wonderfully with the finely chiselled walls and ceiling. There are two small Shiva shrines on either side of the main temple that are completely ruined. The enormous Nandi within, facing the shrine of Shiva, remains in good condition. In most of the Shiva temples, the Nandi was strait to deity but in the temples built by KAKATIYAS the nandi is in an alert position and waiting for the order of lord Shiva. Acharya Nataraja Ramakrishna revived PERINI SHIVATHANDAVAM , by seeing the sculptures in this temple. The dance poses written in NRITTA RATHNAVALI by JAYAPA SENAANI also appears in these sculptures. The temple built area is 5 acres and a twenty acres of land was developed by the greenery around the temple. A total of 25 km radio us found historic temples in the district.

Celebrations To Mark 800 years of Ramappa Temple

HYDERABAD: The state government is planning grand celebrations in the historic town of Warangal to mark the occasion of the famous Ramappa temple completing 800 years. The year-long celebrations will kick start in November this year.

The government is also planning to celebrate the 750 years of coronation of Rani Rudramma.

Information minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah, BC welfare minister Basvaraj Saraiah and tourism and cultural affairs minister Vatti Vasantha Kumar held a meeting here on Tuesday to review the arrangements for the celebrations.

Later speaking to reporters, the ministers said Rani Rudramma's coronation took place 750 years ago and Ramappa temple was constructed 800 years ago. To commemorate this, the state government has decided to celebrate the occasion in a grand manner highlighting the culture, history and the glory of Kakatiya rulers, they said.

Several national, international artists besides local artists would participate in the cultural programmes to be held on the occasion.

Historical sites in Warangal including Thousand-pillar Temple and Warangal Fort would also be developed to see that they were declared as World Heritage sites. The government is also making efforts to revive the Natyamandapam in the Thousand-pillar temple, the ministers said.

Another meeting would be held in July to review the progress of these works, the ministers said.

State Cultural Council chairman Ramana Murthy, Warangal West MLA, D Vinaya Bhaskar, principal secretaries Ajay Mishra, Chandana Khan, Warangal district collector Rahul Bojja, Kakatiya Heritage Trust convener B Paparao, tourism department managing director Sandeep Sultania, tourism department director Savyasachi Ghosh, archaeological department senior conservator Krishnaiah, culture department incharge director Sunitha Bhagavat, Warangal Corporation commissioner Vivek Yadav and others attended the meeting.

The Thousand Pillar Temple (Telugu: వెయ్యి స్థంభాల గుడి) is a historic Hindu temple located in the city of Hanamakonda, Andhra Pradesh,India It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Surya.

History:

The Thousand Pillar Temple is one of the very old temples of South India that was built by the kakatiyas of Chalukya dynasty. It stands out to be a masterpiece and achieved major heights in terms of architectural skills by the ancient kakathiya vishwakarma sthapathis. It is believed that the Thousand Pillar Temple was built by King Rudra Deva in 1163 AD. The Thousand Pillar Temple is a specimen of the Kakatiyan style of architecture of the 12th century.

It was destroyed by the Mughal Empires during their invasion of South India. It comprises one temple and other building. There are one thousand pillars in the building and the temple, but no pillar obstructs a person in any point of the temple to see the god in the other temple.

The present day engineers have taken out all the pillars from the building. After they lifted all the pillars they encountered a huge mass of sand. It took nearly two weeks for them to take away all the sand. It was wet sand, because of a pipe connection from the nearby water body named Bhadrakali Cheruvu.

Temple Architecture :

The Thousand Pillar Temple with its ruins lies in the near the Hanamkonda-Warangal highway, about 150 kilometers from Hyderabad city. This temple is star-shaped with several shrines and lingams. There are three shrines inside the temple called the Trikutalayam. The three shrines of the Thousand Pillar Temple are dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Surya. The Thousand Pillar Temple is surrounded by a big garden in which many small lingam shrines can be seen. There are 1,000 richly carved pillars and a Nandi bull in the temple. The Nandi bull was carved out of a black basalt monolith that has been highly polished.

The Thousand Pillar Temple is constructed on a platform that is raised to one metre height from the ground level. The temple is provided with a number of pillars which are intricately carved and adorned. Rock cut elephants and perforated screens in the temple are characteristic of the then prevailing dynasty.

Warangal Bhadrakali Temple

Location: Bhadrakali Temple in Warangal, Andhra Pradesh is known to be one of the oldest temples for Goddess Bhadrakali in India. This temple is located on the banks of the Bhadrakali lake, a picturesque location between Hanamkonda and Warangal about 1.5 km from Government Polytechnic.

History:
As per the writings on the temple wall this temple is believed to be constructed by the King Pulakesi II of Chalukya dynasty around 625 A.D to commemorate his victory over Vengi region of Andhra Desham. This can be observed from the square pillars used in the temple structure which were different from the circular pillars commonly used in temples constructed by Kakatiyas.
The Kakatiya kings of "Orugallu empire" which is the present Warangal city have adopted Goddess Bhadrakali as their "Kula Devatha" giving her preference over other gods. The lake was built later by Ganapathi Deva, a minister in Kakatiya Dynasty. A road leading to the temple was also added during that period.
Due to the fall of Kakatiya Dynasty to the Muslim ruler of Delhi Ala-ud-din Khilji, his general Malik Kafur and later to Ghias-ud-Din Tughlak, and during the rule of Bahamani Sultans and Golkonda rulers, the temple lost its prominence over the period and the place has become dilapidated.

Sri Ganapathi Sastri (a.k.a. B. S. Ganesh Rao) a Brahmin and devi upasaka (Devotee of Goddess Kali) from Karnataka has migrated to Warangal in 1940's. He noticed the old Bhadrakali temple and has taken interest in renovating the temple. He constructed a small house next to the temple and started living in this isolated place. He along with Sri Mudumbai Ramanujacharya sought the help of Sri Maganlal Sameja (a prominent local merchant) and other affluent locals and renovated the old temple in 1950. Many persons like Brahmasri Sri Hari Radhakrishnamurthy, Adluri Seetharama Shastry, Vangala Guravaiah, Thandra Venkata Rama Narsaiah, Mahatapaswini Mangalambika and Tankasala Narasimha Rao have lent their hands in the renovation work of the temple.

Before the temple was renovated in 1950 there were Animal Sacrifices at the temple (an old custom at Kali temples in India). This practice was stopped from 1950 onwards after the renovation of the temple. During the renovation, Chandi yantra was installed in the temple and amrutha beejaksharas (holy shlokas) were written on the deity's hanging tongue and modified the deity's fierce looking eyes and tongue to a pleasant looking face. Since then everyday poojas, Sharannavaratras, Vasantha navarathras are being conducted regularly as per the Vedic rites.
Sri Ganapathi Sastri, at the age of 113, died on 11 November 2011 in Warangal. He was survived by two sons and three daughters. He was the Bhadrakali's temple trustee at the time of his death. The temple and the people of Warangal has lost a great man who has developed the temple single handedly. His son Sri B. Seshagiri Rao has taken over the temple affairs as chief priest a few years ago.

Warangal is around 150 km from Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh, India) and is easily accessible by road or by trains. It has two bus terminals in Warangal and Hanamkonda and connected to many cities in Andhra Pradesh. The railway stations in Warangal and Kazipet Junction are between Vijayawada and Hyderabad. Kazipet is a junction for trains going to south and north of India from Hyderabad.

The temple is being maintained by the Endowments Department, who collect the offerings made to the temple and spend on the upkeep and repairs of the temple.

The best time to visit the temple is during the festival season in "Sravana masa" corresponding to August and September. In this period festivals and Yagnams are conducted in the temple

Vasantha Navaratri is a 9 day festival dedicated to 9 forms of Goddess Bhadrakali in Chaitra masa which is the start of Vasantha Ruthu (Spring Season).
During the Shakambari Utsavam the Bhadrakali deity is aesthetically decorated with various vegetables.
Sharannavarathi is also called Maha Navaratri and is celebrated in Sharad Ruthu (Winter Season) in September–October every year during Ashwayuja masa. This festival ends with Durga Ashtami. During this festival veda scholars recite vedas, perform Homams.
Bathukamma Festival is celebrated on Durga Ashtami and is famous for large gatherings (in lakhs) of colorfully dressed women and girls who visit the Bhadrakali lake with pans decorated with colorful flowers and perform poojas at the lake. During these poojas they sing various Bathukamma songs. Later these flowers are put on the water. It will be a colorful sight to see so many lakhs of flowers floating on the lake.
The people of Warangal and Hanamkonda believe in Goddess Bhadrakali and visit her for all the auspicious occasions like newborn babies, marriages etc. and offer her bangles, sarees and garlands and pray to her for her blessings.
People with desires go to the temple and tie a coconut (Mudupu) with red blouse piece at the temple after pooja. After the fulfilment of their desires they once again visit the temple and untie the coconut and perform poojas and offer sarees to the deity.

Thousand pillar Temple :

Perched elegantly on the slopes of the hills at Hanamkonda, the thousand pillars temple is fine specimen of Kakatiya Architecture and sculpture. Built by Rudra Deva in 1163 AD in the Chalunkan style, the star-shaped, triple shrine temple is dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu and Surya. The temple is notable for its richly carved pillars, preformatted screens and exquisite icons, specially impressive are the rock cut elephants and the Nandi.

The Thousand Pillars Temple is located in Hanamkonda part of the Warangal City. It is about 6 kms away from Warangal Railway Station & Bus Station and 9 kms away from Kazipet Railway Junction.
