Tenbury Splash to get Unesco World Heritage Status

Worcester County Council has decided to apply for Unesco World Heritage status for the Tenbury Splash point. Their spokesperson said "This site has defeated our best endeavors and rather than spend any money in Tenbury we have decided to embrace the feature and apply for it to be protected"

The splash point in Kyrewood Road just over Kyre Bridge is still very much in evidence despite numerous attempts by WCC to solve it in the last twenty years.

There appears to have been a historically low turnout at 28*%. Either the voters have become completely disenfranchised or totally apathetic.

The conservatives have misjudged the mood of the traditional Tory Tenbury electorate by fielding a candidate that lived in Malvern rather than Tenbury whilst Labour and Lib Dems continue to offer no credible candidates or policies.

Despite this expensive and somewhat pointless exercise in local democracy the residents of Tenbury should benefit from having a local councillor well versed in the frustrating and at time incomprehensible ways of the District Council.

Tenbury Election is a non event!

The recent local council elections in Tenbury turned into a non-event.

As the number of people standing for election was equal to or less than the number of spaces available the elections were not put to the vote.

Only two people stood for election to Malvern Hills District Council (both Conservative) so both were "elected"

District Councillors: Tony Penn (Conservative) & Bridget Margaret Louise Thomas (Conservative).

For Tenbury Town Council only 11 people stood for 13 places.

The newly elected Councillors will take up their seats in May.

Tenbury Town Councillors (Town Ward): Andrea Brittain (Independent); Maggie Davies (Independent); Diann Dowell (Independent); Mary Drummond; Janet Margaret Fielder; Philip Alexander Heath; Natalie Maria McVey; Jonathan Pryce Morgan (Labour); David Patrick; Alan Gordon Wilkinson (Independent).
Tenbury Town Councillor (St Michael's Ward): Eric David Hudson (Independent).

There are still vacancies for one Councillor for Tenbury Town (Town Ward) and one Councillor for Tenbury Town (St Michael's Ward). These vacancies will be filled by co-option if there are any volunteers.

There are a number of times in the next couple of months when Teme Street will be closed.

The Civic Parade (Usually from the library to St Mary's Church) Sunday 22nd October 10 minute closure between 9.40am and 10.15am. Also 10 minute closure between 11am and 11.45am

Two Minutes Silence Saturday 11th November 11am

Remembrance Day Parade Sunday 12th November 10 minute closure between 10.25am and 10.55am. Also 10 minute closure between 11.50am and 12.05pm.

Christmas Lights Ceremony 18th November 16.30pm to 17.30pm

Road Resurfacing. The official closure is 27th November to 1st December but the road should only be closed for one evening and night. (I'll update when known)

Nisa on track to be sold to Co op

The board of Nisa has recommended acceptance of a £143m takeover offer from The Co-operative.

Co-op will pay £137.5m over four years plus £5.5m in transaction costs and take on Nisa’s £105m debt.

Nisa would remain a standalone business and brand but it appears that its members can continue trading under the Nisa brand, convert to Co-ops or sell their business to the Co-op group.

G H Bowkett Ltd currently own 225 shares in Nisa out of a total 60,000 in circulation. Each share could be worth up to £2,291 under the deal which is still subject to a vote by the members next month.

Barclays to close Tenbury Branch

Barclays Bank are to close Tenbury branch on Friday 8th December 2017.

This decision is of probably little surprise the anyone who has tried to use the branch in recent years, with all but the very basic transactions unavailable at the branch.

The biggest impact is probably for business customers who wish to pay in cash on a regular basis.

With cash machines available at Tesco, Co-op, Bowketts and TSB, and cash-back being offered by all the major retailers, the impact should be minimal to most customers.

Ken Pollock has once again retained Tenbury Ward for the Conservatives in the County Council Elections.

May 2017 Results (37% Turnout)

Ken gained one more vote than in the 2009 election but his percentage rose from 44% to 60.7% due to the low turn out of just 37%

Tenbury resident Jonathan Morgan increased his vote from 176 (4.37%) in 2009 (standing as an Independent) to 551 (18.68%) in 2017 as a Labour candidate.

Phil Grove retains Hallow

Phil Grove, who lives in Tenbury Wells and is one of the two District Councillors, has retained his seat on Worcester County Council by winning the Hallow Ward where the turn out was a disappointing 37%.

Tesco opens in Tenbury at last!

Some eight and a half years after the first soil samples were taken, the gleaming new Tesco store was opened this morning by the Tenbury Mayor, Mark Willis.

With Mark, is the Store Manager, Dave Ashton, representatives from the Adam Millichip Foundation and the Tenbury Town Band who each were donated cheques for £500, Lilly from Burford Primary who designed the shopping bags being presented today to shoppers, and various Tesco Managers and Customer Service Assistants.

The shop has been busy since it opened its doors at 8am this morning, and whilst the car park was often almost filled to capacity, there was a good turn over so (when I was there) there was no queuing.

Tesco to deploy AFRC at Tenbury

Tesco already use ANPR Automatic Number Plate Recognition to help control their car parks, but in Tenbury they have gone one step further and have installed ACFR Automatic Customer Face Recognition. This system links into a database of names and faces collated from sources such as Facebook, Twitter etc.

Spokesperson Aprilla Uno said we want to be able to help our colleagues recognise loyal customers and greet them by name".

Tesco have declined to comment on the speculation that this system will enable staff to spot people entering the store who were part of the No Tesco campaign.

Tesco have confirmed the planned opening date of the Tenbury store. Jessica Walker, Local Communications Manager, said “Due to delays in completion of highways work, we have made the decision to move the store opening date back to Thursday 27th April."

Tenbury Hospital - Reduction in Service

The Minor Injuries unit had it's hours reduced last year from 24/7 to 12/7. This year it has been closed on a number of occasions as the staff have been transferred to assist at the Royal in Worcester. Locally concern has been raised that like the "temporary" closure of the operating theatre which never reopened this temporary closure could set a precedent.

Tenbury Hospital plays a vital role in the local community and should be protected from the counties bean counters.

It was very disappointing that the road-show promoting this was not advertised at all when it came to Tenbury and that there isn't a tick box on the survey to say that you are a resident of Tenbury!

If you get a paper copy of the survey, a number of the responses seem to have "strongly agree" listed twice and "strongly disagree" is missing! or perhaps the way it was designed?

My Road Hasn't Been Gritted!

When the weather is cold drivers should always proceed with caution, but in Worcestershire roads are no longer gritted. Instead they are treated with a brine solution sprayed onto the roads.

With traditional rock salt, they beneficial effects only start once the "grit" has been activated by vehicles running over and crushing the rock salt. With the brine solution the benefits start immediately on contact with the road.

So if the road looks wet and shiny it could be "black" ice or it may be the brine solution doing its job.

Why I left a job I loved

As you may have read in today's (10/11/2016) Tenbury Advertiser the Regal Tenbury now has a new manager. As this is a job I loved doing for the last four years and because of some of the rumours circulating in town, I feel I should explain why I decided to leave.

During this year I increasingly found myself at odds with decisions being made by the Trustees and the direction they wanted the business to move.

We were also in disagreement over my contract renewal as they had declined to increase my paid hours from 30 a week to 35 as I had requested. For those who do not know I usually worked in excess of 48 hours a week and sometimes double that.

For the record: I was paid 18.75 hrs/week in 2013, 26.75 hrs/week in 2014, 30.75 hrs/week in 2015

I finally decided to leave when a Trustee, called me, amongst other things, lazy, incompetent, and responsible for putting the Regal "on it's arse" in a tirade of abuse after he had instructed me to do something that I considered unsafe and not in the best interest of either the Regal or its customers. Once this instruction was confirmed by other Trustees I felt my job had become untenable I had no option but to go.

Had I have been an employee rather than a contractor this would have been a constructive dismissal and I would have left immediately but I agreed that as I wanted the Regal to continue to thrive I would work my three months notice period to enable the trust to put a replacement management team in post, and to complete my 18th What's on brochure, which is due out at the end of this month.

In the last 12 months to the end of September we ran 49 live performances, 53 event cinema broadcasts, and 227 feature film screenings to an audience of over 21,500. In August we increased our audience numbers by 60% and our gross income by more than 70%. In October our gross turn-over exceeded £34,500 up £7,500 from the previous year.

Given these results I felt the comments about my performance where far from justified!

During my long notice period I have been overwhelmed by the good wishes from the volunteers and amazed at the number of people approaching me in the street to thank me and to wish me well. I had the opportunity tonight to thank many of the volunteers for their continued hard work and I would like to express my gratitude to all the customers who also made the job so enjoyable.

I will miss working at the Regal but I wish the Trust all the very best for the future, however I hope they don't lose sight of the good things that we have achieved.

A different kind of Christmas Lights for Tenbury

Once again our travelling lives are controlled by TTLs (Temporary Traffic Lights) and for probably the next four weeks.

The lights that arrived yesterday controlling traffic on the A456 and Teme Bridge are to allow works by Western Power. The work is scheduled to last two weeks. Once this work is complete (if it runs to schedule) they will immediately be replaced by more lights whilst contractors for Tesco make the changes to the junction to assist a better flow of traffic wishing to turn left onto the A456 towards Ludlow.

All work is scheduled to be completed by 2nd December and then no further road works are anticipated until the new year.

In other news the much promised and continuously delayed over-flow car park destined for Palmers Meadow, which should have been completed before the cattle market was closed is again promised to be finished by Christmas.
